The Tiger’s Apprentice: Henry Golding leads voice cast of Paramount’s new animated film
Paramount Animation is in the process of developing an animated film adaptation of The Tiger’s Apprentice, based on Laurence Yep’s best-selling YA fantasy novel trilogy of the same name. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Henry Golding (Crazy Rich Asians) has signed on to lend his voice for the leading role of Mr. Hu, with long-time Pixar animator Carlos Baena attached to helm the project.

First published in 2003, The Tiger’s Apprentice tells the story of a boy named Tom Lee as he suddenly meets a shape-shifting talking tiger named Mr. Hu in San Franciso who takes Tom under his wing. From then on, Tom’s life is forever change when Mr. Hu introduces him to the magical world that includes an ancient phoenix, a dragon and a clan of evil-doers. The first novel was followed by two book sequels Tiger’s Blood and Tiger Magic.

The film adaptation will be the directorial film debut of Carlos Baena, who is known for his works on Wall-E and Toy Story 3. The screenplay is co-written by David Magee, Harry Cripss and Kyle Jarrow. It will be produced by Sandra Rabins and Jane Startz with Raman Hui and Kane Lee set as executive producers.
The Tiger’s Apprentice is expected to hit the theaters on February 11, 2022.

Henry Golding had gained recognition for his role as Nick Young in Warner Bros.’ Crazy Rich Asians which was his first ever Hollywood project. Since then, he has been cast in other films such as A Simple Favor, Last Christmas and The Gentlemen. His next high-profile film is Paramount’s G.I. Joe spinoff film Snake Eyes which is currently slated to be released sometime this year.
