The Weeknd, Jenna Ortega, Barry Keoghan to Star in New Trey Edward Shults Movie
Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye will be making his acting debut in a feature film, where he’ll star alongside Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan in a new Trey Edward Shults movie.
According to a recent report from Deadline, Shults (Waves) will direct the film from a script he co-wrote alongside Tesfaye and his producing partner Reza Fahim. The report mentions that both Shults and Tesfaye have been working on this project “secretly” for months, with Ortega and Keoghan signing onto the film recently.
Currently, plot details are unknown, as are future casting choices. While this might be the first feature film Tesfaye, the international star is set to star in the upcoming HBO series The Idol, which he co-created and will appear in alongside Lily-Rose Depp.
For Ortega, this will be another big role as her career continues to rocket in popularity. Recently, the actress starred in the hit Netflix series Wednesday, as well as the 2022 A24 horror film X. Up next for her is a returning role in the Scream series in 2023’s Scream VI.
Keoghan is coming off of a big past two years, having starred in 2021’s The Green Knight and the Marvel Cinematic Universe in Eternals. The following year, he appeared in 2022’s The Batman as the Joker, as well as in the critically acclaimed The Banshees of Inisherin, a role which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

Die Hart 2: Die Harter Trailer Features Kevin Hart & John Cena
The Roku Channel has dropped the official Die Hart 2: Die Harter trailer, the upcoming second season of Kevin Hart’s meta action-comedy. The series is scheduled to make its return on March 31.
The video teases Hart’s efforts to become the greatest action star of all time as he suddenly finds himself in a dangerous situation when someone from his past returns to seek revenge against him. It also offers our first look at John Cena’s character, Mr. 206, who’s a former stuntman with blonde locks.

Die Hart 2: Die Harter is once again directed by returning filmmaker Eric Appel from a screenplay written by Tripper Clancy. Joining Hart and Cena are Nathalie Emmanuel as Jordan King, Ben Schwartz as Andre, and Paula Pell as Cynthia.
“After achieving his dream of becoming a bona fide action hero in Die Hart, Kevin Hart now wants to cement his legacy as the greatest action star of all time. He’s developed a concept for a revolutionary movie where the action is so unscripted and unexpected that even Kevin won’t know what’s coming next,” reads the synopsis. “But Kevin’s myopic dream comes with a blind spot, and he soon finds himself the victim of an evil revenge plot, orchestrated by someone from his past. Kevin must enlist the help of his favorite co-star Jordan King, his over-eager assistant Andre, Andre’s mom Cynthia, and legendary Hollywood stuntman Mr. 206 if he wants to survive.”
The series is executive produced by Hart, Jeff Clanagan, Candice Wilson Cherry, Bryan Smiley, Thai Randolph, Mike Stein, Luke Kelly-Clyne, Kevin Healey and Ty Walker. Season 1 received three Emmy nominations, including for Outstanding Actor In A Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series for Hart and John Travolta and for Outstanding Actress In A Short Form Comedy Or Drama Series for Emmanuel.

James Gunn Talks Creature Commandos, John Economos, and GotG 3 Soundtrack
James Gunn, director and Co-CEO of DC Studios, has given a Creature Commandos production update and a hint about the contents of the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 soundtrack over Twitter.
Replying to a Twitter user who asked about Creature Commandos news, Gunn said that production on the animated miniseries had started and that casting is almost finished.
The Co-CEO also wished Steve Agee, who plays John Economos in Peacemaker, a happy birthday while confirming that fans will see Economos again “sooner than you think.”
Finally, another user said they are 100% sure Twisted Sister’s “We’re Not Gonna Take It” and “Styx’s “Come Sail Away” will be on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3‘s soundtrack. Gunn replied to them, saying “I’d lower that percentage.”
The DC Universe’s first phase, called Chapter One: Gods and Monsters, will feature a multitude of different movies and television shows — starting with Creature Commandos. A few of the other announced projects include a Batman and Robin-focused movie called The Brave and the Bold, a Supergirl movie titled Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, a Swamp Thing film, and multiple TV shows.

The first On a Wing and a Prayer photo from the upcoming true story-based movie has been revealed, giving us our first look at Dennis Quaid in the role of Doug White. The film is set to debut on Prime Video on April 7.

The Last of Us Episode 8 Trailer Features Game Actor Troy Baker
HBO has revealed the promo trailer for The Last of Us‘ upcoming eighth episode, titled “When We Are in Need,” which is directed by Ali Abbasi from a screenplay written by series creator Craig Mazin. The next episode will premiere this Sunday, March 5.
The video gives us our first glimpse at another Ellie-centered episode, as she continues to take care of an injured Joel. It features Ellie meeting a new group of survivors which included The Last of Us game actor Troy Baker in the new role of James. Baker originally voiced Joel in the video games.

Joining Pascal and Ramsey are Gabriel Luna (Terminator: Dark Fate) as Tommy Miller, Nico Parker (Dumbo) as Joel’s daughter Sarah, Anna Torv (Mindhunter) as Tess, and Merle Dandridge (The Flight Attendant) as she reprises her role from the video games as Marlene, the leader of a resistance group known as the Fireflies. It also features Jeffrey Pierce (Bosch) as Perry, Murray Bartlett (The White Lotus) as Frank, Nick Offerman (Parks and Recreation) as Bill, and Storm Reid (Euphoria) as Riley.
“The live-action series takes place 20 years after modern civilization has been destroyed,” reads the synopsis. “Joel and Ellie, a pair connected through the harshness of the world they live in, are forced to endure brutal circumstances and ruthless killers on a trek across a post-pandemic America.”
The live-action series is executive produced and co-written by Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin and original game writer Neil Druckmann, who is also serving as one of the directors. It is a co-production with Sony Pictures Television in association with PlayStation Productions. Executive producers are Carolyn Strauss, Naughty Dog President Evan Wells, and PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan.

The Last of Us Explained: Who Is Terry Chen’s Captain Kwong?
Fans saw much of Ellie Williams’ past in The Last of Us Episode 7, including her relationship with a certain Captain Kwong (Terry Chen). As the series already told, Ellie (Bella Ramsey) was placed in the FEDRA military school soon after her birth and basically grew up as an orphan. Even though he treated her with a certain severity, Captain Kwong seemed to be one of the few genuinely interested in Ellie’s well-being before she met Joel (Pedro Pascal).
Who’s Portraying Captain Kwong in The Last of Us
Canadian actor Terry Chen is portraying Captain Kwong in The Last of Us. Kwong’s filmography features many credits in long-feature projects and television series, ranging from 2000’s Almost Famous (his breakout role as Ben Fong-Torres) to Snakes on a Plane, Steven Spielberg’s Taken, Netflix’s House of Cards, and more.
Captain Kwong made his first appearance in The Last of Us Episode 7, a.k.a. “Left Behind.” He seemed to be a key figure in the FEDRA boarding school as he was the one scolding Ellie for her behavioral issues after she punched a classmate for making fun of her. Pretty much like Graham Greene’s Marlon and Melanie Lynskey’s Kathleen, Captain Kwong seems to be a character exclusively created for The Last of Us live-action adaptation. Sure, the video game downloadable content titled Left Behind — that the latest TV series’ installment adapted — features some FEDRA people Ellie and Riley fought in their shopping mall adventure, but no one can precisely be identified as Captain Kwong.
Kwong saw the potential in Ellie to be someone in FEDRA, provided that she behaved and stopped picking fights with her classmates. “There’s a leader in you,” Kwong told Ellie. “And one day it could be your turn.” It seemed that Kwong’s speech touched Ellie, who looked willing to take things more seriously and follow the officer path.
For the first time, The Last of Us also showed FEDRA’s point of view. Until now, the series focused on the Fireflies’ motivation and also on the Resistance movement in Kansas City, but never looked more closely at FEDRA. “No matter what anyone out there says or thinks, we’re the only ones holding this whole thing together,” concluded Kwong, underlying the importance of FEDRA in keeping a bare minimum of order in a post-apocalyptic world. Even in the games, FEDRA is the enemy, always looking out to attack the protagonists.

Disney+ Schedule February 27-March 5: New TV & Movies
Din Djarin and Grogu are back with new adventures as part of the Disney+ schedule for February 27-March 5.
On March 1, the streaming service (sign-up for Disney+ here) will release the first episode of The Mandalorian Season 3. The show premiered in November 2019 and it was an instant hit, making its protagonists, Din Djarin and Grogu, two of the most iconic Star Wars characters ever. The Mandalorian Season 3 will see the return of Pedro Pascal as the titular hero. The cast includes Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze and Carl Weathers as Greef Karga, among others.
“The journeys of the Mandalorian through the Star Wars galaxy continue. Once a lone bounty hunter, Din Djarin has reunited with Grogu,” says the synopsis. “Meanwhile, the New Republic struggles to lead the galaxy away from its dark history. The Mandalorian will cross paths with old allies and make new enemies as he and Grogu continue their journey together.”
Season 3’s directorial lineup includes returning filmmakers Rick Famuyiwa, Carl Weathers, and Bryce Dallas Howard, along with Star Wars newcomers Lee Isaac Chung (Minari), Peter Ramsey (Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse), and Black Panther cinematographer Rachel Morrison.
The Mandalorian hails from executive producers Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, Colin Wilson, Karen Gilchrist, and Carrie Beck. Favreau is also set as the showrunner and one of its directors.

Suicide Squad Game Requires Online Connection to Play Single Player
After revealing more of its live service elements during Sony’s February 2023 State of Play ahead of its release on May 26, 2023, Rocksteady has revealed that Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League will require a constant online connection, even if playing by yourself.
This was detailed in the game’s frequently asked questions section of its website, with a question asking, “Is an internet connection required to play Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League?” No matter which way you’re playing the game, the answer is yes, according to Rocksteady.
“Yes, an internet connection is required to play Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League solo or via online co-op,” reads the answer in the FAQ. Local co-op is also not an option for those looking to play.
While no explanation is given as to why even single-player experiences must be online, the fact that Suicide Squad will not only be a live service game but also support cross-platform co-op play is likely the reason why. Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League follows in the footsteps of other recently released titles like Gotham Knights, Destiny, and even the upcoming Redfall which all require a constant internet connection to play the game.
Following the release of a new gameplay segment and subsequent developer breakdown, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League has drawn scrutiny from fans, many of whom are unhappy with the game’s live service aspects. After previous leaks of gear scores and multiple currencies were confirmed to be true, fans are unhappy about the RPG-like elements that look to have been included in the game.
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League puts players in the shoes of the ragtag group of villains-turned-mercenaries known as the Suicide Squad. The game stars Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark as they’re tasked with saving the world by killing the Justice League. The game is set to include a litany of heroes, including Batman voiced by the late Kevin Conroy in his final role, as well as other villains like Penguin, Brainiac, and more.

On Wednesday, March 1, the streaming service will add all three The Expendables movies to its available content. Box Office Results: Cocaine Bear & Jesus Revolution Soar, Ant-Man Shrinks
In a tale of contradictions, Elizabeth Banks’ B-movie slaughterhouse Cocaine Bear and the Lionsgate feature Jesus Revolution surpassed expectations.
Cocaine Bear collected $23.09 million, while Jesus Revolution picked up $15.5 million in their debut weeks at the domestic box office, per Deadline. That was enough for second and third-place finishes, though neither was able to unseat last week’s champ, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, from its perch.
The Marvel sequel remained atop the crowd but took a massive 69.6% tumble in its sophomore frame, the worst for an MCU title. The sequel collected $32.2 million in Week 2, bringing its running domestic total to $167.2 million. Worldwide, Ant-Man has earned $363.6 million. Will it collect enough to top Ant-Man ($519M) or Ant-Man and the Wasp ($622M)? Time will tell.
This week sees the release of Michael B. Jordan’s latest entry in the Rocky franchise, Creed III. Except, this time he’s doing it without Sylvester Stallone, which should make for an interesting subplot heading into the weekend. Reviews are strong out of the gate, as are initial projections (somewhere between $28M and $35M). This is a big test for Jordan, let’s see if he has what it takes to knock out expectations.

Pixar CCO: Lightyear ‘Asked Too Much of the Audience’
The reception for Pixar’s Lightyear movie was somewhat mixed. According to Pixar’s chief creative officer, it’s because the film asked too much of the audience.
Speaking to TheWrap, Pete Docter — who directed Monsters, Inc., Up, Inside Out, and Soul for Pixar prior to becoming its CCO — spoke about why he thinks Lightyear ended up being poorly received. The 2022 film was loosely connected to the world of Toy Story, but told the story of the actual Buzz Lightyear — a human space explorer, not the toy.
Following the film’s release, fans didn’t flock to the theater and the film was generally considered a box-office bomb. Docter says he believes the less-than-stellar response is due to the fact that the concept for the film was just a bit too big.
“We’ve done a lot of soul-searching about that because we all love the movie,” said Docter. “We love the characters and the premise. I think probably what we’ve ended on in terms of what went wrong is that we asked too much of the audience. When they hear Buzz, they’re like, great, where’s Mr. Potato Head and Woody and Rex? And then we drop them into this science fiction film that they’re like, ‘What?’”
Docter went on to say that even if fans had known the full idea behind the film, there were too many other things they expected from the film.
“Even if they’ve read the material in press, it was just a little too distant, both in concept, and I think in the way that characters were drawn, that they were portrayed,” Docter stated. “It was much more of a science fiction. And Angus [MacLane, director], to his credit, took it very seriously and genuinely and wanted to represent those characters as real characters. But the characters in Toy Story are much broader, and so I think there was a disconnect between what people wanted/expected and what we were giving to them.”
Up next for Pixar is the romantic fantasy film Elemental, which is set to release on June 16, 2023. For those looking to watch Lightyear, the film is now available to stream on Disney+ and is in stores and digital marketplaces everywhere.

Yuri Lowenthal Reflects on Portraying Multiple Spider-Men
Actor Yuri Lowenthal is known for many characters, particularly the titular role of Spider-Man in Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man series. But he’s actually played the character a few different times and recently spoke to ComingSoon about what it was like to play Spideys in multiple games.
The games in question include the aforementioned Insomniac series, Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, and, most recently, Midnight Suns. Lowenthal noted that he was “honored” to get these chances and how the different teams have their own visions for the character.
“I just feel honored that I have gotten more than one shot in a couple of cases,” he said. “One of the things I love the most is working in a group with other people. With each iteration that I jump on, it’s a different team of people telling a different story. And so, inevitably, the character will be different. Even if I jump in with the same things that I did on the last one, it’ll shift. It’s a different story. It’s a different bunch of writers, and they end up crafting and they end up changing.”
He continued, explaining that he doesn’t necessarily go into it with something in mind that he wants to change, as that happens naturally when working with a new set of creatives.
“So more than heading into it with, ‘Oh, this is something I want to try differently,’ I love to see what they’re coming to the table with and see how that changes it naturally. It definitely helps ease some of my fear of, ‘Oh, what am I going to do different this time? How do I separate this from the last one?’ In the end, I rarely have to, because it’s not just me. It’s me and a bunch of other people creating that character. Then, of course, it’s fun to go, ‘Oh, look how he changed.’ So it’s been great.”
He’s even been multiple Spider-Men in the same game, as Insomniac famously changed the Peter Parker model from the PlayStation 4 original when the remaster came to PlayStation 5 and PC. When asked if that younger face would have changed his performance, he said that he doesn’t always get much of a heads-up of what the model will look like and that visuals are just one part of a character, anyway.
“Any sort of visual stuff that I get in the beginning — and I don’t always get something,” he said, “Most projects have done a bunch of sort of R&D trying to figure out what the look of the character is going to be. As often as possible, I love when they share that right off the top because it, of course, influences how my brain fires after seeing a specific image.
“So I think that visual part is an important part to creating the character, but it’s only one piece, and one piece that I sometimes don’t get. Sometimes I’m working on video games and they may have concept art for the game, but not necessarily for the character I’m playing. Or it’ll end up changing over the course of the development of the game. So it only has to be one piece. But it’s definitely important to me and I love getting that right at the top.”

Swarm Trailer: Dominique Fishback Leads Amazon Thriller Drama
Prime Video has released the full Swarm trailer for the upcoming thriller drama, which hails from Emmy winner Donald Glover. The video features a young woman whose obsession with a Beyoncé-inspired pop star somehow transforms her into a raging killer. The series will be available for streaming on March 17.

“It tells the story of Dre (Fishback), a young woman who is obsessed with a fictional pop star (whose oeuvre and aesthetic are very similar to Beyoncé’s),” reads the synopsis. “The show is a dive into Dre’s life, her fandom, and how it takes her to dark, unexpected places.”
Swarm is created by Atlanta vets Donald Glover and Janine Nabers, who described the project as an “antihero story” that will be told “through the lens of a Black, modern-day woman.” Nabers has also been set as a showrunner, with Glover directing the pilot. In addition to Fishback, Chloë Bailey, Damson Idris, Rickey Thompson, Paris Jackson, Rory Culkin, Kiersey Clemons, and Byron Bowers will also star.
The series will be executive produced by Glover, Nabers, Stephen Glover, Fam Udeorji, Steven Prinz, and Michael Schaefer, with Fishback serving as a producer. It has also been confirmed that Malia Obama has joined the show’s writer’s lineup.

David Harbour: It’s Time for Stranger Things to End With Season 5
The upcoming fifth season of Stranger Things will be the show’s last, and ahead of its conclusion, star David Harbour says that he’s ready to say goodbye to one of the biggest shows ever.
Speaking to Discussing Film, Harbour — who plays police officer Jim Hopper in the series — said that while he initially didn’t think he’d ever want the show to end, he thinks it is now time for the show to come to a close.
“What’s funny is when I started the show, I never ever wanted it to end. That’s why I love the show. I think it’s a great show, even if I wasn’t in it,” Harbour said. “Now we’re almost nine years from filming the first season, and I think it is time for it to end.”
Harbour did say that the show coming to an end is “very bittersweet,” but that he thinks it’s time for everyone to “leave that nest” and begin trying other things.
“But it is, of course, very bittersweet. You know, there’s a sadness there,” Harbour explained. “But also, we’ve all grown up. It is time for us to leave that nest and try other things and different projects. And to let the Duffer Brothers try different things as well. I mean, those guys are so talented. I want to see what they come up with next. So it is bittersweet, but it’s definitely time.”
Stranger Things is set in the 1980s in the fictional town of Hawkins, Indiana. When a young boy vanishes, a small town uncovers a mystery involving secret experiments, terrifying supernatural forces, and one strange little girl.
The series currently stars Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown, Finn Wolfhard, Noah Schnapp, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Natalia Dyer, Joe Keery, Charlie Heaton, Sadie Sink, Maya Hawke, Priah Ferguson, Cara Buono, and Brett Gelman.
Stranger Things Season 4 set a record for Netflix, having been viewed for more than 287 million hours during the week of May 23-30. That’s not only good enough for the top spot of the week for Netflix, but it’s also more than enough to break the record for the streaming platform’s biggest-ever premiere weekend for an English-language series, which was previously held by the second season of Bridgerton (193 million hours).

Interview: Jim Gaffigan on the Meaning of Life and New Movie Linoleum
ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with Linoleum star and comedian Jim Gaffigan about the newly released dramedy that is now playing in theaters. Gaffigan discussed working with Rhea Seehorn and his time on Flight of the Conchords.
“Cameron Edwin (Jim Gaffigan), the host of a failing children’s science TV show called Above & Beyond, has always had aspirations of being an astronaut,” reads the movie’s synopsis. “After a mysterious space-race era satellite coincidentally falls from space and lands in his backyard, his midlife crisis manifests in a plan to rebuild the machine into his dream rocket. As his relationship with his wife (Rhea Seehorn) and daughter (Katelyn Nacon) start to strain, surreal events begin unfolding around him — a doppelgänger moving into the house next door, a car falling from the sky, and an unusual teenage boy forging a friendship with him. He slowly starts to piece these events together to ultimately reveal that there’s more to his life story than he once thought.”
Tyler Treese: One of the things that I thought was really wonderful was this message about not letting your passions be dreams. You obviously went to business school, then you chased a career in entertainment, which has clearly worked out. So how did that resonate with you for this role?
Jim Gaffigan: That’s a great question. I would say that there is something … that’s what I think is so unique about Linoleum, is that there’s so many different takeaways and so many different themes and questions. But I would also say that I think that, and maybe you are saying this, but I think that like the dreams, like ambition — Cameron’s desire to be an astronaut — is that what is fantastic? Or is a fulfilling, rich relationship fantastic? You know what I mean? Is that the measure of a life, you know what I mean? Is a measure of a life some kind of passion or dream you had? Or is [it] humans? These social beings? Is [it] the relationship? That’s one of the questions that, having been to a bunch of screenings, consistently comes up. But also the price that we might pay for some of these pursuits.
I love the dynamic between you and Rhea Seehorn. What impressed you the most about just working off of her as a scene partner? You share some really great moments.
Yeah, I mean, she is the real deal. I think that the really impressive thing about Rhea is [that] there was a thoroughness to the preparation that was not … there was no selfish intention around it. She was very concerned about the arc of the story. So a conversation we kept having is that we didn’t want our relationship — in the movie, we portray this couple [where] there’s an impending divorce. But we didn’t want to portray it as this marriage is dead because often, people that have relationships that end, it’s not necessarily that all the love is gone. The flat-footed response would be [that] there’s an absence of caring that exists between these two.
But the reality is that in most relationships, there is, and where the movie goes, we wanted to serve that. We wanted to make sure that the characters … there was a realism, and every moment or beat was earned. It wasn’t what I call “the first bus,” which is — nothing against Married… With Children, but that married relationship, just the antipathy between the two participants … it should have some flavors in it.
I’ve been so impressed with the roles that you’ve been taking for the past decade — you’re doing a lot of challenging work. How do you choose what projects you undertake?
Thank you, but some of it is … it’s more fulfilling to do these complex characters. Some of it is also doing things that I enjoy consuming, myself. Like, I would much rather watch a movie like Linoleum than a broad silly comedy. That’s not to say that like doing a broad silly romantic comedy isn’t fun. I mean, that is fun, but it’s just not as fulfilling as playing the different layers of a relationship. And, obviously, portraying two people in a movie is fun stuff, you know what I mean? They have a scene where they come together and they kind of interact that and there’s opportunities for humor, but it’s also you’re serving a larger journey. There’s larger questions. Some of it is just, selfishly, it’s more rewarding for me [Laugh], you know?
One of your earlier appearances I really loved was the “Friends” song in Flight of the Concords. I thought that was so fun. How was working on that show and getting to be a part of one of their music videos?
I mean, that show … every project is so different and you’re constantly learning. But I remember being a fan of that show — and I do not sing at all by the way — so I remember going into the sound stage and Bret [McKenzie] was like, “Don’t worry.” And I’m like, “Look, I can’t sing. I don’t want to ruin this for you.” And he was like, “Don’t worry, we can fix it.”
But what was so interesting about Flight of the Concords is that there was a script, and the script was fine and we maybe did it once, and then we improvised the whole thing. And by the way, it was the same in Portlandia, where I think the script was there because there are some people that can’t improvise. But the improv is where you find those really kind of quirky, offbeat things that are fun. And so, Rhys [Darby] is — obviously those guys are so funny — but Rhys is so funny. So I think that the reason Flight of the Concords worked so well is that they knew that some of the gems were going to be found in improv, and they opened it up to that. Then of course there’s the layer of the fantastic music, right? Which is so foreign to me — that’s just me getting lucky, being able to be in that “Friends” song.

What’s Leaving HBO Max at the End of February 2023
Fans still have a few days to watch Pacific Rim before it leaves HBO Max at the end of February 2023.
Starting on February 28, Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 science-fiction action movie won’t be available anymore on HBO Max’s content. Set in a future where giant monsters called “Kaiju” threaten humanity’s existence, the story revolves around Raleigh Becket and his new partner, Mako Mori, in their attempt to face the Kaiju threat with their huge robot called Jagger. Pacific Rim starred Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi, Charlie Day, Rob Kazinsky, Max Martini, and Ron Perlman, among others. The movie was a box-office success, grossing more than $410 million and spurring a sequel, an animated series, and a comic book series.

The Buried Giant: Guillermo Del Toro Sets Next Netflix Animated Movie
Following the critical success of his stop-motion animated adaptation of Pinocchio, it looks like director Guillermo del Toro has officially found his next animated project with Netflix. Deadline brings word that the Oscar-winning filmmaker is currently developing the animated film adaptation of The Buried Giant, based on Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro’s fantasy novel of the same name.
“The Buried Giant continues my animation partnership with Netflix and our pursuit of stop-motion as a medium to tell complex stories and build limitless worlds,” del Toro said in a statement. “It is a great honor and greater responsibility for me to direct this screenplay which Dennis Kelly and I are adapting from Kazuo Ishiguro’s profound and imaginative novel.”
The Buried Giant will be directed by Guillermo del Toro from a screenplay he is co-writing with Dennis Kelly (Matilda the Musical). The story takes place in a fictional post-Arthurian England, where no one is able to retain long-term memories. It centers around an elderly Briton couple, who are trying to search for the son they vaguely remember.
The film will be produced by del Toro, with ShadowMachine serving as its stop-motion studio. This marks del Toro’s latest collaboration with Netflix after first working together on animated shows including Trollhunters: Tales of Arcadia and Trollhunters: Rise of the Titans.

Steven Yeun to Make MCU Debut in Marvel Studios’ Thunderbolts
Nope and Minari star Steven Yeun has reportedly joined the cast of Thunderbolts, the upcoming Marvel Studios ensemble movie set to arrive in 2024.
Deadline is reporting that Yeun has joined Thunderbolts in an undisclosed role that is significant to the movie and could also play a role in future films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, though which films specifically are currently unknown.
Yeun is in good company, as the movie, which will follow a team consisting of mostly supervillains and antiheroes, is also set to feature Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Florence Pugh, David Harbour, Sebastian Stan, Hannah Jon-Kamen, Wyatt Russell, Olga Kerleynko, and Ayo Edebiri.
Thunderbolts will be directed by Jake Schreier, whose history as a director isn’t extremely extensive, having only worked on 2012’s Robot & Frank, 2015’s Paper Towns, and the 2021 filmed version of Chance the Rapper’s Magnificent Coloring World Tour.
Thunderbolts is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 26, 2024, as part of Phase 5.

Tyler Treese: There’s so much to unpack in this movie. Colin West really managed to put a lot into this script, with so many interesting themes like the passage of time, chasing after your dreams, and family dynamics. What stood out the most that made you want to be a part of this project?
Rhea Seehorn: It’s kind of what you said — I just thought it was so brave and amazing that Colin took what’s ultimately a love story between this husband and wife and going through the chapters of life and the ups and downs … I’ve got to figure out how to not spoil things. Ultimately it is Erin, my character, that is telling this story and you find out why at the end. But I think I was drawn to the script because of what you’re talking about, because I was like, “These are huge questions he’s asking. These are very hard-to-answer philosophical questions of what does it mean to be successful in life? What does it mean to make something of your life? To make something of yourself?” Which is something that I feel like social media has just magnified, and you see it in people.
The desperation to define what it means to be successful and to do something great keeps getting more and more narrowed down to just involve fame, you know? And to be a caretaker and to take care of one another … to be defined by how you see yourself versus how others see you. To hang on to the part of you that’s a dreamer, even when you are saddled with everyday pedantic needs and paying bills and living in a world that’s handing you a lot of chaos.
They were just these big huge questions that he approached with love and with hope. It’s ultimately a hopeful film to me. And Colin wrote a beautiful letter that he sent with the script to me about his experience with his grandfather, that he was very close with, passing and his going through dementia, and that it left Colin with … instead of just a negative, terror-stricken response that many of us have, like, “Oh my God, what if you got dementia or someone you love got dementia?” His take on it was just this incredible hope about what are the multitude of realities that reside within all of us? And what does that mean?
And I know I’m talking in circles, but it’s because of what you said — the film is about so much and it manages to be funny and clever and dramatic and kind of sci-fi and a little bit of magical realism. And a love story. I think that, as an audience, if you can not try too hard to hang on tightly to one thing or another and just experience it … the people I’ve talked to that have seen it said they were sort of surprised by how moved they were at the end, of just being kind of overcome with feelings. Part of that is going to be whatever you bring to the film, you know? Whatever your experience is is going to highlight what resonates with you. But it’s just this beautiful kind of poem that he’s written about trying to be a human
I love that you focused on the hopeful aspect because your character, even though her marriage is kind of deteriorating, you still see there’s such love there. How interesting was it to explore that aspect in this movie?
I’m glad you mentioned that, because that is something that I brought up to Jim Gaffigan, who was an amazing scene partner and we had such a good time working on this. We talked about it at length with Colin as well, that there’s a lot of things to be concerned about these scenes of what’s the actual reality versus what you’re seeing. What is actually going on versus what’s colored by memory or distorted memory and this, that, and the other. But at the end of the day, no matter how frustrated or no matter how disconnected, these two characters love each other and are actually terrified that one or the other one is falling into the abyss, the way they see it — which has a different kind of resonance by the time you get to the end of the film.
But it was important to Jim and I and Colin definitely agreed that even when irritated with each other or even when unable to speak, it’s love. These two people love each other and are trying to claw their way back to each other. There’s just a lot of obstacles in the way, at the moment, but I think that’s the glue. If these two people no longer needed anything from each other, then the scene’s over and, ultimately, the film’s over.
There’s a real beauty to that aspect. You mentioned Jim as a scene partner — every couple of years, I kind of forget how great of an actor he is and what range he has. What stood out most about working with him and him showing his skills in this versatile dual role here.
I really liked how collaborative and studious Jim is. Jim’s very funny — as you might imagine — and dry-witted. Because we were operating in a little bubble in upstate New York at the height of the pandemic, pre-vaccine, his family — Jeannie, his wife, and all his amazing kids … I just love Jeannie. I spent weekends with them because I couldn’t fly home to L.A. And really got to know them well. I guess what stood out about Jim the most is he’s pretty studious and nerdy about script analysis and breaking down scenes, and I am that way, so I was delighted to have a scene partner that wants to … and Bob Odenkirk was the same way. Staying up till all hours of the night to discuss the multitude of meanings of one single sentence is, to me, blissful Eden. It doesn’t get better.
So when I find scene partners that want to do the same, I’m in heaven. But this film had so much to unpack, so I was happy. I’m not saying that nothing ever happens organic — I don’t have to overthink every single line, but my point being that Jim was there. Jim was not going to operate as a satellite, which you don’t know. This world-famous stand-up comic personality, you don’t know if he’s going to show up and be like, “I’m fine. I’m just going to do my own thing over here and you’ll do yours.” He’s so invested in wanting to be in service to the story and find the truth of a scene. So it was great.
It seemed like some of the organic moments might’ve come in the show-within-a-movie parts where you’re doing the low-budget local TV educational kids show. I always loved like Bill Nye and Cosmos, so I thought that was so fun. What did you like most about getting to be on that local access television set and having fun with science?
Honestly, what I liked most is the props and the art direction. I was just like … I wanted to pick up every little thing that they made. Nichole McMinn doing props, but also we had Mollie Wartelle being head of production design and July Rose White’s costumes and Kaili Corcoran was the art director. All of the lo-fi elements that they did for the sci-fi show-within-the-show has them, so it’s clearly a callback to have other things very handmade. But throughout the show, there’s there’s texture, to me, because nothing is CGI. And Ed Wu, the way he shot it … like even the masks in the Halloween party when all the kids were doing that Halloween party towards the end, I think there was maybe 50 masks and I think only about five of them were purchased. They are handmade.
The guy that has a popsicle stick house on all the props and things that are in all the show-within-the-show that you’re talking about, like these people … and we’re in a Ramada and they’re down on their hands and knees hand making all of this stuff in the atrium with chlorine from the indoor pool wafting by. I think because I come from a fine arts background too, I was just fascinated to literally watch people create the magic that my character is seeking. It brought me such joy in those scenes.
I wanted to take you back to one of your earliest roles. You were in this Magic: The Gathering video game as the Tutorial Witch and that game is still very beloved by Magic fans. So I was curious about how that came about and if you have any memories of filming that,
[Laugh] Is that tutorial still attached to new versions of the game?
No, no.
I mean, that was back when you actually bought software and it came in a box. I remember going to, I think … Best Buy? I can’t remember, after it came out. I remember going there and — this so silly — but I mean, I had to have been in my 20s and they’re called industrials, and I was doing theater in Washington, D.C. and not a lot of film and television was shooting there then, except for like, people that want to use the White House as a backdrop and all that. Much more shoots there now, but back then, you could sort of supplement your income as a theater actor by doing these things called in-house industrials, which are like in-house training videos for AT&T., because a lot of people have their flagship headquarters there in D.C.
And in this case, I forget who was producing this, but this was a tutorial and it was super low-budget. I think I was non-union … yeah, I was definitely non-union. If you look closely, and I was doing it with my friend Regi [Davis] — he’s the other sorcerer — and if you look really closely, our gladiator-style sorcery boots are actually … I’m wearing white tube socks that they’ve taken gray or silver electrical tape and made the X’s and made a shoe. I don’t even have shoes on. We had fun. It was just a non-union part, not a lot of money, but it was another chance to try to work on camera and to better myself as an actor on camera.
But anyway, it was so silly — I went to Best Buy and I actually thought that they would give me a copy for free just because I was … I showed them on the back of the box, the little itty bitty microscopic picture that had me. And I was like, “I’m the person that did the tutorial!” And they were like, “That’s wonderful miss, can you please get out of the line?” Nobody gave a shit [Laugh].
That’s an amazing story. I wanted to briefly touch on Better Call Saul because getting to be in a character like Kim for seven years has to be really remarkable, as few actors get to show that much depth, let alone through such a long period of time. So what was most fulfilling about going on such a journey with that character and them being a part of your life for almost a decade?
Yeah, there is no one thing. It’s the whole thing. I start to tear up when I even talk about. It’s the best writing, it’s the best production design, it’s the best directing, your best scene partners, the best acting all around you. Just this height of what storytelling can be in television. Then when you say to yourself, “What if that group of people said, ‘Hey, I think you’re capable of the same. We believe we believe in you.'” And that’s such a gift and that is how they work on that set. It’s not a “break you down so they can build you back up” kind of place where it’s screaming and yelling.
It is all about building you up. People go to watch each other’s work, even when they’re not in scenes, and people will rehearse and run lines with you. We made a point of any guest stars and guest actors, if at all schedule-permitting, made it possible to go get them from their hotel so that they could run their scenes with us and not feel frightened when you walk on the set the next day because you haven’t met anybody. It was just this whole thing that was in service to telling this brilliant story. And as an actor, to get to play that Kim Wexler character, which I’ve never seen a character like her on television. If I didn’t get to play her, I would still be thrilled that that character is on television. Just unburdened by having to be palatable or likable.
Peter [Gould] told me very early on, he said, “If Kim has her own code of ethics and she sticks to it, people will respect her and therefore they will like her.” And I had no idea what people would make of her. Then the fans and the critics accepted her — because I wasn’t from the Breaking Bad universe, so I didn’t know. They might be like, “What’s this person? Please get rid of her.” Their acceptance of that, and then Vince [Gilligan] and Peter seeing in me the kind of subtext work that I love to do, that I was doing Season 1 and wanting to build on it, is a compliment that I can’t overstate. It’s a beautiful feeling. Any actor or a journalist or interviewer in your position, a host … it’s a beautiful thing when somebody gives you the gift of being able to do what you love, but then also says, “What if you could get better at it every single day?” And that’s what I got to do.

My Spy 2 Gets Official Title, Dave Bautista & More to Return
A sequel to the 2020 spy comedy film My Spy is in the works, with several of the stars of the original film set to return, including Dave Bautista.
Alongside Bautista, Chloe Coleman, Kristen Schaal, and Ken Jeong will all return to the sequel, titled My Spy: The Eternal City, which is set to be directed by returning director Pete Segal. The returning cast members will also be joined by newcomers Anna Faris (Mom, Scary Movie), Craig Robinson (The Office), and Flula Borg (Pitch Perfect, The Suicide Squad).
The sequel to My Spy will focus on a “now teenage Sophie (Chloe Coleman), who convinces J.J. (Dave Bautista) to chaperone her school choir trip to Italy where they both unwittingly end up pawns in an international terrorist plot targeting CIA Chief, David Kim (Ken Jeong), and his son, Collin — also Sophie’s best friend.”
“We were so delighted with the success of My Spy. It is an absolute privilege to reunite with Pete Segal, Dave Bautista, Chloe Coleman, and the rest of the talented cast and filmmakers–along with some very exciting additions,” said Jennifer Salke, Head of Amazon and MGM Studios. “With the sequel, our Prime Video customers are in store for another dynamic story, complete with twists, hilarious performances, and even a little romance.”
The original film was released in 2020 and told the story of a CIA agent (Bautista) who finds himself having to deal with a nine-year-old girl in a family that he and his tech support are surveilling while undercover. Kristen Schaal played Bobbi, J.J.’s tech specialist, while Ken Jeong played David Kim, J.J.’s boss at the CIA. The film was a hit for Amazon, becoming the third most-watched SVOD (subscription video-on-demand) film of the year, according to Screen Engine.

When to Watch We Have a Ghost on Netflix
Netflix will release We Have a Ghost at 3 a.m. ET/12 a.m. PT on Friday, February 24. The project hails from Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon from a script based on Geoff Manaugh’s short story titled Ernest. Landon is an expert in the horror-comedy genre, making his directorial debut with 2015’s Scouts Guide to the Zombie Apocalypse. He also penned several installments in the Paranormal Activity film franchise
Joining Harbour and Mackie are Golden Globe winner Jennifer Coolidge, Jahi Di’Allo Winston, Tig Notaro, Erica Ash, Faith Ford, Niles Fitch, Isabella Russo, and Steve Coulter.
“Finding a ghost named Ernest haunting their new home turns Kevin’s family into overnight social media sensations,” reads the logline. “But when Kevin and Ernest go rogue to investigate the mystery of Ernest’s past, they become a target of the CIA.”

Gorillaz Movie No Longer Moving Forward at Netflix
A planned Gorillaz movie at Netflix has been scrapped, according to frontman and lyricist Damon Albarn.
Speaking to Stereogum, Albarn confirmed that due to cutbacks at the streaming platform, a planned film starring the fictional band members would not be moving forward. Specifically, Albarn points to the fact that the company was “making too much content and decided to cut back on their movie offerings.”
“Yes,” Albarn said when asked if the film had been permanently suspended. “That is to say, and without naming names because the whole matter has not yet been settled: the streaming platform for which we were making the film has withdrawn. They started to panic because they were making too much content and decided to cut back on their movie offerings. And, as has been classic Hollywood practice for decades, the guy we were working with has moved on to another company. From then on you have lost your guardian angel, and there seems to be a bad smell hanging on you. Hollywood is quite territorial: if a new guy comes along, he must and will have a different opinion, even if he secretly agrees with his predecessor.”
A film based on the fictional band had been teased by Gorillaz creators Albarn and Jamie Hewlett for years now. In previous interviews, they have openly discussed a feature-length project, although no real information on what a film might focus on had been discussed. Prior to the film being canceled, Albarn said in a 2020 interview with La Tercera that contracts had been signed and scripts had been written, and that the film was going to be “one hour of pure fiction with music.”
While it’s unknown what the future holds for the project, Albarn’s comments on the man they were working with moving away from Netflix could suggest that the movie has a chanced to be picked up elsewhere. As of now, though, fans will have to tide themselves over with Gorillaz’s latest album, Cracker Island, which is set to debut on February 24, 2023.

Rick and Michonne: The Walking Dead Spin-off Begins Production
AMC has confirmed that production on the forthcoming The Walking Dead spin-off following Rick and Michonne has finally started. The announcement also came with the release of the first two behind-the-scenes photos from the set of the horror drama, teasing Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira’s return. The series is currently scheduled for a 2024 debut.

Andrew Lincoln and Danai Gurira are set to reprise their fan-favorite roles in the upcoming Rick and Michonne spin-off. It will be written and produced by Scott Gimple, who will also serve as the showrunner. Gurira will also be credited as a co-creator and co-writer for the six-episode drama.
The drama was initially set to premiere this year along with two other spin-offs, The Walking Dead: Dead City and The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, which are both centered around the original series’ leading survivors. Both spin-offs are also currently in production, with the Jeffrey Dean Morgan-led series set to premiere this June, followed by the Norman Reedus-led show’s premiere later this year.
“This series presents an epic love story of two characters changed by a changed world,” reads the synopsis. “Kept apart by distance. By an unstoppable power. By the ghosts of who they were. Rick and Michonne are thrown into another world, built on a war against the dead … And ultimately, a war against the living. Can they find each other and who they were in a place and situation unlike any they’ve ever known before?”
Based on Robert Kirkman, Tony Moore, and Charlie Adlard’s comic series of the same name, The Walking Dead is executive produced by Kirkman, Scott M. Gimple, Greg Nicotero, David Alpert, Joseph Incaprera, Gale Anne Hurd, Denise Huth, and Angela Kang.
