Why Bob Marley: One Love Didn’t Have Subtitles for Patois

Bob Marley: One Love Patois
Credit: Paramount

Bob Marley: One Love director Reinaldo Marcus Green and star Kingsley Ben-Adir have spoken about the film’s use of patois and the lack of subtitles.

In interviews with ComingSoon, the two were asked about the use of patois and how the film didn’t use subtitles to clarify what was being said for viewers who might not be accustomed to patois. Green explained the process of deciding how heavily to lean into the language, revealing how he tried to keep it so that anyone could understand at least every third word. The filmmaker also said that ADR was a big part of finding a good balance after filming.

“The mental math that I had going into the film was if you understand, as a viewer, every third word, you totally get it. You don’t question it. If you understand every fourth word, you’re confused. So that’s the line we had to toe. We were dangerously in the four and five area for a long time, but I would much rather embrace that because that’s totally closer to the reality than going into the one-to-two area,” Green stated.

“We dialed it in in post. We had, fortunately, the opportunity to go back and get some stuff. ADR is our friend, and we used every tool at our disposal to dial the language in a place that we felt did justice to Bob, his family, the music, Kingsley [Ben-Adir]‘s performance … To answer your question, it was a team effort to dial in the language, which you heard, but we certainly leaned into the authenticity of it because I don’t think Bob would’ve had it any other way.”

Ben-Adir also discussed how the emotion behind the words still comes through, even if viewers might not understand every word. The star even stated that a woman in Jamaica gave him a B+ grade for his patois.

“I knew that there were going to be so many moments where people weren’t going to understand because I remember not understanding,” the actor revealed. ” All the work went into honoring the language, all the conversations around authenticity being the most important thing, and the whole journey of that … A lady in Jamaica gave me a B+, and I remember just feeling so happy with that. I just remember feeling like, ‘Oh man, that’s really good that we got there as a non-Jamaican is really amazing. It was more about the attempt to honor him in that way or the language in that way. It’s nice. I kind of like that people are like, ‘I didn’t understand.’ [Laughs]. Like, I feel like understanding the emotion is really what’s important.”

Who else stars in Bob Marley: One Love?

The cast of Bob Marley: One Love also includes Lashana Lynch, James Norton, Tosin Cole, Anthony Welsh, Michael Gandolfini, Umi Myers, Nadine Marshall. The film was produced by Robert Teitel, Brad Pitt, Jeremy Kleiner, Dede Gardner, Ziggy Marley, Rita Marley, and Cedella Marley. The executive producers for the movie were Richard Hewitt, Orly Marley, and Matt Solodky.

The First Omen Director Teases Future Installments in Horror Franchise

The First Omen Omen franchise

The First Omen director Arkasha Stevenson wants the horror franchise to keep expanding.

Speaking with Screen Rant, Stevenson revealed she’s thought about where the future of the Omen franchise could go after the upcoming prequel movie.

“There’s so many questions and so many adventures in the Omen universe, and it’s hard to work on a film and not think about all of these tangent stories, so yeah, there’s like a spiderweb in my brain,” she said. “I hope the Omen franchise keeps expanding because it’s one of my favorites.”

The First Omen is the sixth official entry in the franchise. The series began in 1976’s The Omen, which was directed by Richard Donner. Damien: Omen II came in 1978 and was then followed by 1981’s Omen III: The Final Conflict, 1991’s Omen IV: The Awakening, and 2006’s The Omen.

What is The First Omen about?

“When a young American woman is sent to Rome to begin a life of service to the church, she encounters a darkness that causes her to question her own faith and uncovers a terrifying conspiracy that hopes to bring about the birth of evil incarnate,” the official synopsis reads.

Written by Stevenson, Tim Smith, and Keith Thomas, The First Omen stars Nell Tiger Free (Servent) as Margaret Daino, Sônia Braga (Shotgun Wedding) as Sister Silvia, Ralph Ineson (The Witch) as Father Brennan, Bill Nighy (Pirates of the Caribbean) as Cardinal Lawrence, Tawfeek Barhom (The Looming Tower) as Father Gabriel, Maria Caballero (The Girl in the Mirror) as Luz Valez, and Nicole Sorace as Carlita Skianna.

David S. Goyer and Keith Levine produced the film, while Smith, Whitney Brown, and Gracie Wheelan served as executive producers.

The First Omen releases on April 5, 2024, from 20th Century Studios. The other five Omen movies, meanwhile, are currently streaming on Hulu.

The Monkey: Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood Join Theo James in New Stephen King Movie

Elijah Wood The Monkey

Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood, and more have joined Theo James in The Monkey, a new horror movie based on a Stephen King short story.

Per Deadline, Maslany (She-Hulk: Attorney at Law) and Wood (Lord of the Rings) have joined the cast of The Monkey, which wrapped filming approximately one week ago. Along with James (The White Lotus), the film will also star Christian Convery (Sweet Tooth), Colin O’Brien (Dear Edward), Rohan Campbell (The Hard Boys) and Sarah Levy (Schitt’s Creek).

What is The Monkey about?

“In The Monkey, when twin brothers Hal and Bill discover their father’s old monkey toy in the attic, a series of gruesome deaths starts occurring all around them,” Deadline’s description reads. “The brothers decide to throw the monkey away and move on with their lives, growing apart over the years. But when the mysterious deaths begin again, the brothers must reunite to find a way to destroy the monkey for good before it takes the lives of everyone close to them.”

King’s The Monkey was first published in 1980. It was later revised and republished in Skeleton Crew, a collection of King’s short stories that came out in 1985.

The Monkey is written and directed by Osgood Perkins, the son of Anthony Perkins who previously helmed 2014’s The Blackcoat’s Daughter, 106’s I Am the Pretty Thing That Lives in the House, 2020’s Gretel & Hansel. He also directed Longlegs, which releases in theaters this July.

James Wan produces the movie alongside Michael Clear, Jason Cloth, Dave Caplan, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, and Chris Ferguson. Fred Berger, Peter Luo, Nancy Xu, and John Friedberg serve as executive producers.

“Stephen King is the godfather of the horror genre. He had a huge influence on me as a child and throughout my career, and it’s always been a dream to help bring one of his stories to life,” Wan previously said in a statement. “The Monkey is a personal favorite, with its simple, iconic and incredibly marketable conceit. And I can’t imagine anyone better than a visionary and lifelong genre fan like Osgood to bring this to life.”

A release date for The Monkey has not yet been set.

P. Diddy: Why Were Sean Combs’ Homes Being Raided?

With federal agents raiding P. Diddy’s homes in L.A. and Miami, people are left wondering what the rapper, or other members of his households, did to get the properties raided. Here are the latest reports on why Homeland Security Investigations raided Sean “P. Diddy” Combs’ homes.

Why is P. Diddy being raided by Homeland Security Investigations?

The Los Angeles and Miami properties of Sean “Diddy” Combs were raided by the HSI as a part of an ongoing reported sex trafficking investigation.

On Monday, the American rapper’s luxury homes were raided by federal HSI agents along with other law enforcement due to an investigation that is currently being conducted by federal authorities in New York. This investigation is reportedly centered around sex trafficking, according to AP and Los Angeles Times sources.

Following the raid, an HSI rep said in a statement given to TMZ:

“Earlier today, Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) New York executed law enforcement actions as part of an ongoing investigation, with assistance from HSI Los Angeles, HSI Miami, and our local law enforcement partners. We will provide further information as it becomes available.”

A similar statement was reportedly provided to AP. However, the officials declined to discuss the details of the investigation. It isn’t known whether Combs was the target of the HSI raid.

TMZ shared images of Diddy’s two sons, Justin Combs and Christian “King” Combs, in handcuffs, which was followed by a video showcasing the aftermath of the raid conducted on Diddy’s L.A. mansion in Holmby Hills.

Has P. Diddy been arrested?

At the time of writing, Sean “P. Diddy” Combs’ arrest remains unconfirmed by authorities. His lawyer states that Combs was never detained.

Speaking about the two raids, Combs’ lawyer Aaron Dyer told TMZ:

“Yesterday, there was a gross overuse of military-level force as search warrants were executed at Mr. Combs’ residences. There is no excuse for the excessive show of force and hostility exhibited by authorities or the way his children and employees were treated.”

Dyer further added that Combs was never detained. He called the raids a “Witch Hunt” based on accusations that had no merit.

After entertaining the audience with Leo, starring Tahalapathy Vijay, Lokesh Kanagaraj is all set for another massive project. The director is helming Superstar Rajinikanth’s film, tentatively titled Thalaivar 171. So far, very little has been revealed about the upcoming movie. On the other hand, Rajinikanth’s fans are eager to learn more details.

In September 2023, Sun Pictures announced Thalaivar 171. As the name suggests, this marks the 171st project of Rajinikanth’s career. Lokesh Kanagaraj is set to write and direct the film

When will Rajinikanth’s Thalaivar 171 go on floors?

Recently, Lokesh Kanagaraj took up an acting role opposite Shruti Haasan in the “Inimel” music video. Written by Kamal Haasan, the song was released on March 25. During the event, Kanagaraj addressed some questions regarding Thalaivar 171. As per Indian Express, he revealed that the movie’s production will begin in June. In addition, he will need over a year’s time to complete the film.

Kanagaraj said, “The pre-production work is on. The film will go on floors in June. The entire process will take around one and a half years.” Later, he gave an update on Kaithi 2, “One month after the completion of Thalaivar 171, we will begin Kaithi 2 with Karthi. So, the work has been going on.”

In a previous interview, Kangaraj revealed that Rajinikanth agreed to star in the movie after his narration. He further added that the Tamil superstar was interested in the script. The director had earlier mentioned that the film would go on floors in April once he was done writing it. However, as per Kanagaraj’s latest statement, it seems that the process took a longer time than anticipated.

On the work front, Rajinikanth last appeared in an extended cameo in Lal Salaam. Despite the superstar’s presence, the movie did not perform well at the box office. Now, the Jailer star will be next seen in TJ Gnanavel’s forthcoming film Veittayan.
