Dune Tops the Domestic Box Office, Crosses $200M Worldwide

Denis Villeneuve’s big-budget sci-fi epic Dune surpassed industry expectations and took home $40.1 million at the domestic box office, marking the best start for a Warner Bros. pic boasting an HBO Max day-and-date title, per Deadline. Early esteems pegged the big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s novel at around $30-35 million, but business dropped off just -22% on Saturday after a $13.7 million Friday haul.

Internationally, Dune collected $87.5 million to bring its worldwide total to an impressive $220.7 million. Considering the reported $300 million price tag, the pic has a lot of ground to cover. Although, the HBO Max release obviously shaved money off the weekend box office. The hope here is that word of mouth and a strong awards season propels Dune to over $100 million, but in the current box office landscape, who knows what’s going to happen?

Notably, 50% of Dune’s business came via IMAX, Dolby Cinema, PLF, D-box, and 3D. On IMAX, the epic scored $9 million from 404 screens in the U.S. Globally, that number jumps to $17.8 million.

Halloween Kills dropped -71% in its second weekend (typical for a horror film) for a $14.5 million haul. Altogether, the film has collected $73.1 million domestically and $90 million worldwide.

No Time to Die earned another $11.9 million (-50%) to bring its domestic total to $120 million after three weeks. Globally, Daniel Craig’s final go as 007 has amassed $525 million making it the second Hollywood title to cross the $500 million milestone after F9: The Fast Saga. Bond has quite a ways to go if it hopes to surpass Vin Diesel and Co.’s $716 million worldwide haul, much less Spectre’s $880 million take globally, but it’s still a terrific showing given the pandemic.

Similarly, Venom Let There Be Carnage neared the $200 million domestic mark and reached $350 million globally after another strong weekend.

Elsewhere, Wes Anderson’s The French Dispatch collected $1.3 million from 52 theaters — a robust $25K theater average — before it expands to 600 theaters in 60 markets next weekend. Disney/20th Century Studios/Locksmith’s animated adventure Ron’s Gone Wrong bombed with $7.3 million from 3,560 theaters.
