A new live-action series based on Casper the Friendly Ghost is in development at Peacock, according to a recent report from Variety.

The new series will hail from writer and executive producer Kai Yu Wu (The Flash), with UCP and DreamWorks Animation also attached to co-produce the project. The series is described as a horror/adventure show that will reimagine the origins of Casper the Friendly Ghost in a “coming-of-age story.” The series will focus on a new family arriving in the town of Eternal Falls and likely discovering Casper. Along with his help, they’ll have to help solve a mystery that has been going on for over 100 years.
Casper’s history as a character began in 1936, when he appeared in magazine form, before Paramount Pictures released the first cartoon starring the character in 1945. Since then, Casper has gone on to be a hit, and one of the most recognizable and iconic characters in history, with multiple television shows, movies, and other media made about him, with the biggest being the 1995 live-action film starring Devon Sawa, Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman, Cathy Moriarty, and Eric Idle.

The film was a massive success, and spawned multiple direct-to-video films, Casper: A Spirited Beginning, and Casper Meets Wendy, that released in 1997 and 1998, respectively. This new series will mark the first installment of a new live-action series since those original films.
