Interview: Harry Shum Jr. on Voicing Brainiac 5 in Legion of Super-Heroes

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with Legion of Super-Heroes star Harry Shum Jr. about the upcoming animated DC film. The actor discussed Brainiac 5’s character and Mortal KombatLegion of Super-Heroes arrives on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray and digital on February 7, 2023.

“Welcome to the 31st century and the Legion Academy, where a new generation hones their powers with hopes of joining the Legion of Super-Heroes,” reads the film’s synopsis. “Devastated by tragedy, Supergirl struggles to adjust to her new life on Earth. Taking her cousin Superman’s advice, Supergirl leaves their space-time to attend the Academy. There, she quickly makes new friends, as well as a new enemy with old ties: Brainiac 5. But a nefarious plot lurks in the shadows — the mysterious group known as the Dark Circle seeks a powerful weapon held in the Academy’s vault.”

Tyler Treese: Even though this is set in the far future, we see that your character, Brainiac 5, is still facing prejudice. What did you find most interesting about the character and the struggle that he’s in?

Harry Shum Jr.: I think with Brainiac 5, there are a lot of parallels and I don’t think exact ones, but I think just with what we all deal with in some sort of way is that we’re hampered by things that are families or ancestors that have done that are sometimes shameful or sometimes just embarrassing or sometimes even detrimental to society. Like when you look at someone like Brainiac who is trying to destroy our favorite superhero, Superman, you can’t help but feel a certain way when you see a version of him or you hear the name.

I think Brainiac 5 definitely has all that baggage behind him to try to overcome, but at the same time, to try and just shrug off. That’s something really hard to shrug off when that’s in your face all the time. I just loved how Josie Campbell’s, script really dealt with trying to figure out how to explore that a little more within the movie’s universe.

The League of Super-Heroes isn’t the most famous DC property, but it’s very interesting and fun with the school setting. How familiar were you with this team before you got this project?

The team in particular, I wasn’t. I did a lot of research to see what this academy is all about. In a lot of ways, it feels like the rejects or the superheroes that aren’t given a full chance. Even seeing Bouncing Boy — you see a superpower like that and you don’t know what to do with it. And then you see it being utilized in a team setting and it starts to really come together. I love that they put so many resources behind a story like this, especially with the Academy, which like you said, is not one of the more popular ones, but hopefully will become so. I think it speaks to how we’ve just pushed aside the things that should be popular because so many people go through feeling like they don’t belong and feeling like outcasts and all they needed was someone to believe in them and to have a chance.

There are so many great scenes between Brainiac 5 and Supergirl. What did you like most about that dynamic that starts off as antagonistic and, and grows from there?

Yeah, don’t judge a book by its cover. I think that’s a very universal theme. But at the same time, I think what’s really great about this film is that you yourself as a fan or as an audience member watching this, knowing the background of Supergirl and Brainiac 5 to a certain degree, to be able to make a certain judgment already.

So when you see it kind of stray away from it and allow these two to really open themselves up to each other while also fighting with each other and for each other, I thought it was really great to see, especially in something that felt so nostalgic for me watching this film. I’ve watched a lot of DC animated films and I just love how it’s very grounded and rooted in these relationships and these are these things that keep you going as an audience member beyond the fighting and the superhero-ness of it all.

Speaking of great Warner Brothers animated movies, they do a bunch of great Mortal Kombat releases. You appeared as Sub-Zero in Mortal Kombat: Legacy. Would you ever want reprise that role in a animated movie in the future?

I’m game for anything that says “get over here!” That was just cool, man. I grew up playing Mortal Kombat — I’m playing Mortal Kombat 11 right now — and it’s these relationships that, as much as we don’t think of Mortal Kombat as relationships, that’s all it is, man. It’s their relationship as a team and banding together to dismantle each other in different ways. I think there’s so much that it’s left to explore in that franchise.

I loved your performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once. What I loved about the Raccacoonie bit is it stars as this hilarious one-off gag and winds up telling this very touching side story by the end. How great was getting to have that full arc there?

It’s great. I mean, the Daniels … they hit me up and told me about the story — I mean, first the bit, and then I was already in. Then they kept telling me about the storyline and then they’re like,” It’s not long, but there’s a lot to chew on.” I kind of rolled my sleeves up. In this universe, he is the protagonist of that universe. And I think we’re all protagonists in our own stories — in our own universe — in a lot of ways. So I just love that they did went from this ridiculous gag to something so heartfelt and really directed it in that way as well.

So I took it very seriously. I think all the actors in all their universes did that, and I think that’s why the film works on the level of being able to be recognized in so many areas of the film. I think everyone had that. I would never have thought that I would be acting with a raccoon — not just in front of me, but on my head and along with Michelle Yeoh on my shoulders. I definitely don’t even believe that it’s real, but yet it is, and I’m so happy that it is.

That scene with Michelle on your shoulders and controlling you has become one of the more iconic shots from the movie. How ridiculous was filming that?

I filmed a martial arts movie with Michelle Yeoh [Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny] and there’s a lot of ridiculousness in that. I don’t think it was meant to be, it was just the fact that we … I remember she hit me a couple of times on it, even though it was by design, and then she would cut and she’d be like, “Oh my God! Are you okay?” And she just completely turned into sweet Michelle. Then knowing that she can be badass Michelle …I think seeing that it was watching this happen in Everything Everywhere All at Once, I was like, “Oh, this is the two worlds combining. It’s really such a beautiful thing.” So she’s goofy, I’m goofy, and everyone else around us was goofy, so it felt very normal.

Ke Huy Quan has been very open about saying Crazy Rich Asians inspired him to come back to acting. How wild is it that your work inspired this legend to come back and have this great run he’s on now?

You know, I think it’s the culmination of everything. You look at Ke’s body of work and it was cut short — very sadly, but we get to see it come back in resurgence. We get to be part of this almost resurgence that … it’s almost like he gave so much to us that everyone else’s work gave it back to him and tenfold. So it’s a really beautiful exchange of everyone just trying to set the stage for the people behind us and how great is it that we get to see someone who influenced us so much while we were growing up finally get on that stage and thank the role for reintroducing him into the world.

Eddie Murphy Open to Shrek 5 or Donkey Spin-off Movie

Eddie Murphy Open and Ready to Playing Donkey in Shrek 5

Despite being one of the most popular animated franchises ever, a new Shrek entry has yet to be discussed following 2010’s Shrek Forever After. However, star Eddie Murphy would love for a fifth film to happen, and would return immediately to reprise his role as Donkey.

Speaking to ETalk, Murphy was asked if he would be up for returning for a possible Shrek 5. Murphy wasted little time in confirming he would, saying that he would do it in “two seconds” if given the chance.

“I’d absolutely be open if they ever came with another Shrek, I’d do it in two seconds. I love Donkey,” Murphy said, before taking some joking shots at the character Puss in Boots. “You know, they did Puss in Boots movies. I was like, ‘They should have did a Donkey movie. Donkey is funnier than Puss in Boots.’ I mean, I love Puss in Boots, but he ain’t funny as the Donkey.”

When it was noted that perhaps Murphy had to pull some strings to get a Donkey movie off the ground, Murphy joked that if DreamWorks Animation wanted to do it, he is “sitting and ready” to come back.

“I would do a Donkey movie,” said Murphy. “I would do another Shrek in two seconds…That’s DreamWorks Animation. They have to want to do it. DreamWorks, if you all want to do it, just call me. I’m ready, I’m sitting and ready to do Donkey.”

Following Shrek Forever After‘s release in 2010, the Shrek franchise has leaned more into the other characters featured in Shrek franchise for future movies and projects. Specifically, Puss in Boots has received two movies (2011’s Puss in Boots and 2022’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish), as well as a brief television series, The Adventures of Puss in Boots.

While it’s unknown if a fifth Shrek movie is in the works, the end of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish did hint at the possibility, as it saw the trio of Puss, Kitty Softpaws (Selma Hayek), and Perrito (Harvey Guillén) headed off to the land of Far Far Away, where Shrek resides, to “see some old friends.”

Ant-Man Writer Reflects on Edgar Wright’s Script, What Made the MCU

ant-man script edgar wright

Prior to the 2015 film Ant-Man releasing, director Edgar Wright was originally set to direct and co-write the project. While Wright’s involvement eventually came to an end, co-writer Joe Cornish still sees some similarities between the original film from what Wright and he came up with.

Speaking to ComingSoon, Cornish — who co-wrote a screenplay for the film with Wright — was asked about whether or not the finished product that is 2015’s Ant-Man resembled any of what he and Wright had planned. According to Cornish, he thinks about 35% or more of the movie is material from Wright and himself, especially the final section of the film, which takes place in a bedroom with toys and other objects shrinking and enlarging.

“No, it does. I think there’s probably … the first Ant-Man is probably maybe 35% our material, maybe even more,” said Cornish. “Weirdly, some of the bits that people think are Edgar’s bits are not Edgar’s bits. Some of those incredible whip transitions are actually Peyton’s contributions. But a lot of the design is Edgar’s, the casting is Edgar’s … especially the last half hour of the movie where the fight in the bedroom with the toys and the bit in the swimming pool … a lot of that section is how we envisioned it.”

On the topic of making the screenplay, Cornish said that it was a “wonderful experience,” not only because he got to work with Wright, but because he got to work with Marvel, and experience what that type of large-scale production was like.

“For me, that was a really wonderful experience,” Cornish said. “I wish Edgar had got to make his movie, but I got to work at Marvel for years and years and years. I got to work with Edgar for years and years and years. I got to experience what it’s like to work on a big production like that. Marvel are maybe the most successful movie production house in the world. So it’s a win-win situation for me. And I really enjoyed the first Ant-Man. I really enjoyed the second one and I’m really looking forward to the third one.”

Wright was originally announced as director of the film in 2006, with he and Cornish writing the screenplay for the project. However, by 2014, Wright had left the project, infamously noting that while he wanted to make a Marvel movie, he didn’t think Marvel wanted to make “an Edgar Wright movie.” Wright also said that, at one point, Marvel wanted to write a draft of a script without him, which he found tough to deal with considering that he’d written all of his movies. By 2015, most of Wright’s crew had left the film, and director Peyton Reed was announced as stepping in behind the camera.

The third film in the franchise, Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, is once again being directed by Peyton Reed from a screenplay written by Jeff Loveness. It is slated for release on February 17, 2023.

Hi-Fi Rush Review: Devil May Fi

It’s always special when a studio breaks away from expectations and creates something that contrasts with its established gameography. Horizon and A Plague Tale are solid franchises, but they are slightly more remarkable knowing those teams previously made gritty first-person shooters and licensed kids games, respectively. Hi-Fi Rush is another entry in that elusive club, as it’s a colorful character action game that comes from a developer that has exclusively only released spooky titles like The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo. Hi-Fi Rush is not only fresh within the context of Tango Gameworks’ prior work, but also character action games as a whole since this charismatic opener is one of the best debuts the genre has ever had.

It’s an opener that’s bursting with style with stunning art direction, animation, and syncopated cutscenes that all come together in its intro to form a condensed sample of why it’s so unique. Hi-Fi Rush’s cel-shading is, frankly, among the best in the medium since it looks like a cartoon in a way that few games do, evoking (and sometimes besting) Arc System Works’ incredible efforts in the fighting genre

Not only is it awash with all sorts of bright colors, but it also moves in a way unlike almost any other game at a frequency that makes it all the more notable. Aside from brief dialogue exchanges at the hub, every scene is animated with the utmost detail, providing extravagantly emotive characters that provide such a palpable energy to the whole game. Each cast member strikes comic book-like poses and runs through a gamut of cartoonish expressions at a pace that makes it seem like pure magic since animation of this quality done at this frequency must be sorcery. The way in which it seamlessly moves from gameplay to 3D animation to 2D animation and back to gameplay makes it all the more dazzling. The unique approach and strength of its animation is reminiscent of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and, with any luck, it will be equally as influential

Its energetic scenes are only bolstered by how the characters and environment move to the music. Only big actions are timed to the music, while background items bob to the rhythm, meaning it avoids Mickey Mousing since it’s only used just enough to still be effective. The music has more of an impact on gameplay since players are encouraged to dodge, jump, and attack on the beat. All of this is made easier through various elements in the heads-up display that provide all sorts of useful feedback. The most charming example of this is how Chai, the protagonist, snaps his fingers and steps to the beat, which extraordinarily syncs up no matter if he is walking or running.

Its musical wrapping is wonderfully integrated since it is not always mandated, but rewards those who learn its intricacies. Chai can still evade or attack off the rhythm, but he gains certain bonuses for correctly timed actions like extra damage or the ability to chain multiple dashes. This soft encouragement pushes players to get better without harshly punishing those who are still improving. And at its core, it’s a system that incentivizes users to play it quickly, efficiently, and thoughtfully, rewarding those who put in the time with flashy combos that are like violent musical performances.

Chai has learned a lot of his combos from Devil May Cry’s Dante since Hi-Fi Rush borrows liberally from Capcom’s classic (yet inconsistent) franchise. Combat is all about performing juggles and bouncing from foe to foe as quickly and stylishly as possible. It’s a simple premise others have unsuccessfully tried to emulate, but Hi-Fi Rush lives up to those high standards because of its responsive controls and the way in which it balances depth and accessibility. Thanks to a robust amount of animation canceling, Chai attacks and evades with the fluidity the best character action games have and that nimbleness is the rock-solid bedrock of its entire combat system.

This foundation means that it is simply engaging to smack robots with a metallic club, and it doesn’t have an exhaustive Bayonetta-esque list of hard-to-remember button combinations. All of its attacks have different functions and diving into those distinctions is where it derives its depth. Some strike a wide area, while others send a singular target flying and using this in combination with its nifty grappling hook, assists, enhanced partner attacks, and special moves means there are always many ways to keep aerial juggles going for those dexterous enough.

Parrying also yields more defensive options, especially if players go for directional parries, which are harder to pull off but dish out better benefits. Enemies always attack to the beat, making this a satisfying skill to master since it gets players to improvise during their musical beatdowns while still sticking to the rhythm. Parries also play a pivotal role in taking out tougher foes since nailing the timing during these brief mini-games can take out weakened mini-bosses in one satisfying swoop.

Boss fights are the culmination of many of the combat’s best qualities since these musical showdowns synchronize to the track that plays during them. The soundtrack builds as the boss readies up and then continues to escalate as the fight plays out, meaning the tempo rises as the stakes do. These brawls aren’t the hardest tests of skill even on its harder settings, but they’re still cinematic showpieces that are vastly improved by its incredible presentation. And even though it doesn’t have a lock-on button and front-loads most of its upgrades, Hi-Fi Rush’s combat is spectacularly gratifying from its small grunt skirmishes to its big bosses.

Hi-Fi Rush offers plenty of replayability and reasons for players to master its mechanics. Its Bloody Palace-like wave-based survival mode opens up after beating the campaign and strips out the story in favor of something more focused. It’s a true test of skill that even lets users buy items and save their progress, offering a level of flexibility Devil May Cry never did. Hidden doors also open up after rolling credits and hint at a secret ending for those who track them all down and conquer the challenges they hold inside. There’s even a creative Rhythm Master difficulty that, in addition to being much harder, automatically kills the player if they can’t keep a beat. These extra offerings all feed into its upgrade economy and cosmetic unlockables, but they, more importantly, give players more ways to push themselves and experience the game’s fast and fulfilling gameplay.

Hi-Fi Rush‘s narrative is also fulfilling but in a different way. Many of its qualities stem from its aforementioned sensational animation that gives everything more life. Its cutscenes are pleasing to watch because of this smooth and exaggerated movement, and this is often used to sell its jokes. Some of these bits rely and succeed almost solely on the quality of the animation and timing, which is impressive since games are rarely humorous in this way. The writing is also rather funny and never forces quips or annoying references down the player’s throat or tries too hard. Even the mouthy Chai comes off as likable because he’s a positive and endearing idiot, rather than a dork who thinks he’s too cool.

Hi-Fi Rush is a wildly surprising experience for many reasons and unexpectedly suggests that Tango Gameworks, despite its pedigree, is better at making character action games than horror games. Hi-Fi Rush’s combat is nuanced, responsive, and utilizes its musical conceit well to give it its own unique identity. The animation is also a massive achievement that steals the show by providing a wholly original visual style that moves even better than it looks. It excels in just about every area, whereas The Evil Within and Ghostwire: Tokyo came with their share of caveats. It’s a radical shift in tone, but this new tone is a smash hit.

SCORE: 9.5/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 9.5 equates to “Excellent.” Entertainment that reaches this level is at the top of its type. The gold standard that every creator aims to reach.

My Hero Academia Season 6 Dub Finds Its Lady Nagant

My Hero Academia English Dub Adds Lady Nagant

The My Hero Academia English Dub for its sixth season has found its Lady Nagant, with Crunchyroll reporting that actress Erica Lindbeck will be voicing the role of the villainess.

Following the end of the Paranormal Liberation War, My Hero Academia is set to step into its next arc, one that will introduce viewers to Lady Nagant. The character — whose real name is Kaina Tsutsumi — used to be a Pro Hero, but ended up renouncing her heroic status and has since become one of the bigger villains in the series.

Her quirks include Rifle, giving her the ability to generate a sniper rifle out of her arm and turn her hair into different types of bullets.

Lindbeck is no stranger to the world of anime, having lent her voice to several high-profile roles, including Daki in Demon Slayer, Futaba Sakura in Persona 5: The Animation, and Kaori Miyazono in Your Lie in April.

My Hero Academia Season 6 adapted the “Paranormal Liberation War” arc of the original manga, which sees an all-out war occur between the heroes and villains of the series.

For those who might have missed the train on My Hero Academia, the series is available to stream in its entirety as of now. Currently, all 130 episodes of the anime are available to stream on Crunchyroll for those looking to catch up.

My Hero Academia began as a manga series written and illustrated by Kohei Horikoshi. It was first serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump in 2014. The anime television adaptation made its debut in 2016. Both are still ongoing.

Cleo: Peacock Developing a Comedy-Drama Set in Ancient Egypt

Peacock has partnered with Jane the Virgin showrunner Jennie Snyder Urman to develop the brand new comedy-drama series titled Cleo, which will take place in ancient Egypt. The project will center around the queen of Egypt, Cleopatra.

According to Deadline, Cleo is created by Jessica Runck, who is also co-writing the series with Urman. Just like on Jane the Virgin, Urman will be serving as a showrunner and executive producer as part of her overall deal with CBS Studios.

“A dramatic comedy set in ancient Egypt that proves not much has changed in two thousand years, the series will tell the story of Cleopatra, an overqualified young woman who is forced to hide her intelligence behind make-up, clothes and men to earn the respect she needs to hang on to her job: being queen of Egypt,” reads the synopsis.

The project will also be executive produced by Runck, Aaron Kaplan, Brian Morewitz, Wendi Trilling, Joanna Klein, and Karen Forman. It is a production by CBS Studios, Kapital Entertainment, and TrillTV.

Cleopatra is one of the world’s most famous historical figures. Her story has been adapted for the screen a number of times now, with the most notable one being the 1963 film starring Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton. Paramount Pictures is currently developing another film adaptation of Cleopatra, with Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot attached to portray the Egyptian queen.
