Hulu April 2023 Schedule: New TV & Movie Release Dates

The Hulu April 2023 schedule features plenty of anime content, including the popular Chainsaw Man series.

Starting on Sunday, April 2, Hulu subscribers can watch Chainsaw Man on their favorite streaming platform. The story follows a young man named Denji, who is transformed into a half-demon with the ability to transform his arms into chainsaws after merging with his pet devil, Pochita. The Chainsaw Man English cast features Ryan Colt Levy as Denji, Suzie Yeung as Makima, Reagan Murdock as Aki, and Sarah Wiedenheft as Power.

“Denji is a teenage boy living with a Chainsaw Devil named Pochita,” reads the series’ synopsis. “Due to the debt his father left behind, he has been living a rock-bottom life while repaying his debt by harvesting devil corpses with Pochita. One day, Denji is betrayed and killed. As his consciousness fades, he makes a contract with Pochita and gets revived as ‘Chainsaw Man’ — a man with a devil’s heart.”

Chainsaw Man was created by Tatsuki Fujimoto and was originally serialized in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump between 2018 and 2020. Part 2 of the series began this past July and is being published through Shueisha’s online Shonen Jump+ magazine.

Disney Casts Live-Action Lilo in Upcoming Lilo & Stitch Remake Movie

Disney‘s live-action Lilo & Stitch remake movie has found its Lilo, as a young actress has been cast for the titular role.

THR is reporting that newcomer Maia Kealoha is set to play Lilo Pelekai — the young girl who befriends Stitch and helps him change his ways. Kealoha joins Zach Galifianakis, who was announced to be starring in the Disney remake just last month.

The Lilo & Stitch live-action remake was first put into development in 2018. Originally released in 2002, Lilo & Stitch is Disney’s 42nd animated feature. The film was well-received and has since been a favorite film to many, with Stitch quickly becoming another iconic mascot for Disney. Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich of Rideback will produce the remake, and Rideback’s Ryan Halprin is executive producing.

“Lilo is a lonely Hawaiian girl who adopts a small ugly ‘dog,’ whom she names Stitch,” reads the original animated film’s synopsis. “Stitch would be the perfect pet if he weren’t in reality a genetic experiment who has escaped from an alien planet and crash-landed on Earth. Through her love, faith, and unwavering belief in ohana, the Hawaiian concept of family, Lilo helps unlock Stitch’s heart and gives him the ability to care for someone else.”

Interview: Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham Producer on Reboots & Lovecraft

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham producer Jase Ricci about adapting the Mike Mignola story and rebooting iconic characters.

Batman: The Doom That Came To Gotham is a 1920s-based tale that finds explorer Bruce Wayne accidentally unleashing an ancient evil, expediting his return to Gotham City after a two-decade hiatus,” reads the film’s synopsis. “The logic/science-driven Batman must battle Lovecraftian supernatural forces threatening the sheer existence of Gotham, along the way being aided and confronted by reimagined versions of his well-known allies and enemies, including Green Arrow, Ra’s al Ghul, Mr. Freeze, Killer Croc, Two-Face, James Gordon, and Bruce’s beloved wards. Prepare for a mystical, often terrifying Batman adventure unlike any other.”

Tyler Treese: The movie has such great source material. I’d love to hear about your relationship with Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham and when you first read it, because this was a perfect choice to make it into a movie.

Jase Ricci: Thanks, it wasn’t my choice! [Laugh]. But I would’ve if I had thought of it. But yeah, it’s so funny. I’m a lifetime nerd — everybody is a lifetime nerd if you work in this industry, and I love Batman and I’m a huge fan of H.P. Lovecraft too. For some reason, The Doom That Came to Gotham was just in a blind spot. I don’t know how it got there, but you have these blind spots every now and then. It’s like, “Wait, what?” I was close with James Krieg, we worked across offices at WB, and he’s just a powerhouse with all these, and we got friendly during Covid.

He called and he said about The Doom That Came to Gotham. I’m like, “You’re kidding, right? Yeah. Yes.” It’s just like, absolutely. This is like a dream project for me being, coming from a fan of both sides of that. I was very stoked. Then I read the book and I was like, “Oh my God.” After you read the book — it’s a great book, but, oh my gosh, can we bring this to the screen? Can I bring this to the screen? We had a great development team. Sam Liu is an amazing director and Jim, who’s worked on a bunch of these. We were all developing it together and I was really … it was just one of the most pleasant development experiences I’ve ever had. You couldn’t pull everything from the book, and you don’t want to just port everything. You don’t want to do a one-for-one. But I was really happy with what we did and what we took from the book. The film, looking at the art, it really paid homage to the original story.

It’s so fun to see how those Lovecraftian elements were all imbued into the DC superhero world. You also have it set during the 1920s. What did you like most about this very unique version of DC and having the freedom of it being Elseworlds and being able to show such different twists on familiar characters?

There are a lot of things. We took some liberties with translating some of the Robins, which was one of my favorite things to do. We added like Lucius — we brought in him to sort of help us explain how Batman had become that, how he had a Batcave when he got back, and stuff like that. I think a lot of it was because we took the basic structure of the book, and the book has a very final, conclusive ending, right? Batman doesn’t die, but he becomes something different. That was part of the fun of it, because the trick to writing … I’ve written a bunch of superhero stories and a bunch of Batman stories and you’ve always got to get them back to one at the end of the story, you know what I mean?

But here it’s just like, “No, in a way, Batman dies. You get to write that story, but you don’t have to worry about getting him back to where he was. Yes, he starts off similar to the Batman that we know in that he embraces logic and reason, but the whole story is about him letting go of those things to embrace the supernatural and, really, to embrace insanity to become something more. He’ll never come back to that. He’ll never be the Bruce Wayne on page one that he is at the book’s end, which was really fun. Knowing that this is a Batman that is going to completely change and irreparably change was a lot of fun.

Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham Gets Release Date

I love this version of Batman. What was most interesting about working with a Bruce Wayne that was away from Gotham? We see him make his return but he’s not the stereotypical Bruce Wayne. You have a very different take here.

It was a challenge. I mean, a lot of that was laid out in the book and here, it was tricky to sort of imbue him with that. I think we got a lot of mileage out of the death scene where his father and his mother are murdered because it has to, obviously, drive the plot. And it comes back later in the script to sort of say, “Here’s also what happened at that scene.” But it also had to imbue him with that Bruce Wayne that has a love and respect for Gotham that is so important to him to keep fighting for the rest of the movie. It’s not like he’s the Bruce Wayne who grew up in Gotham and came to love it.

He left when he was eight, so you had to think about that with each of the characters that you bring in, like Oliver Queen. They’ve been friends for life, but how can they be friends for life if he left when they were eight? Then it’s like, “Oh, they ran into each other in Dushanbe,” you know what I mean? Stuff like that and the letters they send letters back and forth. But yeah, it was different. It was definitely a different Bruce Wayne, but it was important to the story to keep the essence and the love for his city without betraying what the idea of the story was. He’s been gone since he was a kid.

You’ve done some really great work with the 2012 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series and I feel like that’s similar to working on DC stuff since you have so much lore and great stories that came before you. What’s most satisfying about getting to have your hands on these iconic properties and further their legacies?

Without dating myself, I remember a time when you had to wait years. Like Batman ’89, I was like, “Oh my God, they’re making a Batman movie,” and you have to wait for it to come out. Nothing came out. Before that was Superman. What came out between, you know? The Dolph Lundgren Punisher movie that came out? But now that superheroes are … well, almost oversaturated, but they’re in the zeitgeist so much that there’s so many different versions of Batman that are Batman. The Flash movie coming out is going to have several in there.

It’s a little liberating because it’s like, “Okay, everybody knows Batman. We don’t have to see the origin scene again. We don’t have to do this, we don’t do that, because people just know it.” My mother-in-law knows what the Batman origin story is. So you can sort of elide those details and take the story in a different direction.

In the last year and a half, I wrote technically five different versions of Batman, each of them remarkably different in different varying degrees. But I was co-executive producer on Bruce Timm’s show, Batman: Caped Crusader, and that’s a very different Batman than The Doom That Came to Gotham, a very different Batman from the DC Super Hero Girls show. So it’s fun to get these interpretations. Same thing with Turtles. They can reboot that — they are rebooting it again with that movie — but they reboot it every couple months and it’s slightly different, but it’s just making sure you find that kernel of familiarity with audiences.

Donnie Yen Open to John Wick Spin-off Movie

Donnie Yen recently starred in John Wick: Chapter 4 as the blind hitman Caine, and following the massive success of the film, said he wouldn’t mind stepping back into the role.

Speaking to Variety, Yen was asked about the possibility of a John Wick spin-off and said that he would “love” to do it, although he did note that it’s unclear whether it’ll ever happen, due to the nature of Hollywood.

“I’d love to do a John Wick spin-off centered around Caine,” Yen said, before joking that “there’s always ‘talks’ in Hollywood.”

ComingSoon spoiler alert

Yen’s role as Caine is one of the many bright spots that fans took from the recently released film. In the film, Caine is contracted by the High Table to kill John Wick, his friend, in order to protect himself and his daughter.

By the end of the film, Caine had earned his freedom and was seen in a post-credits scene going to see his daughter, before being seemingly attacked by Akira (Rina Sawayama), the daughter of Shimazu Koji (Hiroyuki Sanada), who Caine had killed earlier in the film.

Although no spin-off starring Caine has been greenlit as of yet, the world of John Wick is continuing to grow. A spin-off film titled Ballerina starring Ana de Armas is already in production, as is a television series named The Continental, which is set to appear on Peacock in the future.

John Wick: Chapter 4 is available to watch now in theaters.

Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd Isn’t Currently Involved in It Prequel Series

The upcoming HBO Max series Welcome to Derry is set to act as a prequel to the It movies from Andy Muschietti. However, the man who played the iconic clown Pennywise in both films is not involved in the project as of yet.

Speaking to Bloody Disgusting, Bill SkarsgÃ¥rd revealed that he was not a part of the show as of now, but wouldn’t exactly rule out playing the character. However, should he not, he did have some advice for the person stepping into the large shoes of Pennywise.

“We’ll see what they come up with and what they do with it. I’m not currently involved in it,” SkarsgÃ¥rd said. “If someone else gets to [play Pennywise], my advice is to make it your own. Have fun with it. What I thought was so pleasurable about that character was how incredibly abstract he was. The book is really a gift that way.”

The new It films were a massive success at the box office, grossing over $1.1 billion combined globally following their release. It Chapter Two was the latest release and took place 27 years after the events of the first film. The sequel featured an entirely new cast that included Jessica Chastain, James McAvoy, Bill Hader, Isaiah Mustafa, Jay Ryan, James Ransone, and Andy Bean.

“Set in the world of Stephen King’s It universe, Welcome to Derry is based on King’s It novel and expands the vision established by filmmaker Andy Muschietti in the feature films It and It Chapter Two,” reads the logline.

Marvel’s Avengers’ Black Panther Is Turning Into Actual Panther-Man, Cap Gets New MCU Variants

Crystal Dynamics is adding even more new skins to Marvel’s Avengers that will arrive for free in the game’s last big patch that’s dropping on March 31. Captain America is getting unhelmed and slightly darker versions of his Avengers: Endgame suit, while Black Panther is turning into an actual giant humanoid cat.

As noted by the game’s Twitter account, Black Panther’s Earth X costume is from the “Earth X” comic series where exposure to Terrigen mutates T’Challa and turns him into a human-panther hybrid. The short clip in the tweet shows this mutated hero in action and pairs him with the Capwolf version of Captain America and Werehawk version of Hawkeye.

Captain America is also receiving two new spins on his Avengers: Endgame skin. One is a helmet-free variant, while the other is the armor from the climactic finale of the film. While the the latter looks extremely similar to the base version of the Endgame suit that made its way to the game in June 2021, this latest rendition is just a little dirtier and darker. The studio started releasing premium unhelmed variants of skins in late 2022, which many criticized for being too expensive.

Crystal Dynamics has not confirmed if yet another skin will come to the game in its final substantial update. However, it has announced new costumes (one each for Iron Man, Black Widow, and Thor) every other day this week so far. An artist’s portfolio and datamined information also point to the team adding a mohawked variant of Hawkeye’s Avengers: Endgame outfit on that final day.

Seth Rogen Explains His Donkey Kong Voice in The Super Mario Bros. Movie

Seth Rogen’s Donkey Kong in The Super Mario Bros. Movie is quite recognizable, mostly because it’s just Rogen’s normal voice. And that was on purpose, according to the actor.

Rogen told Comic Book that he has just one voice — his own — as he’s shown in other animated films like Sausage Party, Kung Fu Panda 3, and Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers, the latter of which seemed to poke fun at Rogen’s similar performances. So if the team wanted another impression from him, they were going to have to go to someone else. However, he said he made that clear from the jump.

“I was very clear, I don’t do voices,” said Rogen. “And if you want me to be in this movie, it’s gonna sound like me and that’s it. And that was the beginning and end of that conversation. I was like, ‘If you want Donkey Kong to sound a lot like me, I’m your guy.’ But it did seem to work.”

Rogen went on, talking about how he dove into how the gorilla just doesn’t like Mario that much and how that relationship affected his performance.

“I think in the film and in the game I think all you really know about Donkey Kong is that he throws barrels and he does not like Mario very much,” said Rogen. “That’s honestly kind of what I ran with was this idea that he hates Mario, that they are kind have like an adversarial relationship, that he’s annoyed by him, that he doesn’t want to be stuck with him, that he wishes he was on this adventure without him. To me that was, that was funny and that was kind of the root of the character and it was kind of born of the mythology of the games.”

Chris Pratt has come under similar scrutiny, as his Mario voice isn’t too far from his own natural speaking voice. However, he recently noted that that traditional Charles Martinet Mario voice wouldn’t play in a feature film.

Master Gardener Trailer: Joel Edgerton Leads Paul Schrader’s Next Thriller

Magnolia Pictures has revealed the full trailer for Master Gardener, the upcoming thriller drama starring Golden Globe nominee Joel Edgerton as a horticulturist who has a dark past he’s trying to forget. The film had its world premiere at the 2022 Venice International Film Festival. It is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on May 19.

Master Gardener is directed by acclaimed scribe Paul Schrader (First Reformed, The Card Counter), who’s best known for his long-time collaborations with Martin Scorsese in films such as Taxi Driver and The Last Temptation of Christ. Joining Edgerton is Sigourney Weaver (Avatar: The Way of Water) as Mrs. Haverhill, Quintessa Swindell (Black Adam) as Maya, and Esai Morales.

“The film follows Narvel Roth, the meticulous horticulturist of Gracewood Gardens. He is as much devoted to tending the grounds of this beautiful and historic estate, to pandering to his employer, the wealthy dowager Mrs. Haverhill,” reads the synopsis. “When Mrs. Haverhill demands that he take on her wayward and troubled great-niece Maya as a new apprentice, chaos enters Narvel’s spartan existence, unlocking dark secrets from a buried violent past that threaten them all.”

Master Gardener is written by Schrader. It is produced by Amanda Crittenden, David Gonzales, and Scott LaStaiti, with Luisa Law, Dale Roberts, and Linda Ujuk executive producing.
