Essential Antoine Fuqua Movies to Watch After The Equalizer 3

best Antoine Fuqua movies
(Photo by Michael Loccisano/Getty Images for HBO)

With The Equalizer 3 blasting its way into theaters this weekend, I decided to reflect on the director’s career and highlight the best Antoine Fuqua movies. While it’s true that the man’s films can be very hit or miss, he at least brings a unique style to every project that’s hard to discount. Now that his Equalizer trilogy has ended (for now), it’ll be interesting to see where his next venture takes him.

I’ve always thought he could make a fantastic horror film, what with his dark and gritty style. Then again, I’d love to see him return to his Training Day routes with another crime drama. Either way, I’m always eager to see the latest offering from Fuqua, and these five movies are a big reason why.

Shooter (2007)

This slick action pic stars Mark Wahlberg as a sniper who gets tricked into completing a job for some shady government officials and ends up on the run, Fugitive-style. Thrilling set pieces abound, and while the overall results aren’t quite up there with the best, there’s a B-movie quality to Shooter that makes it almost hard not to appreciate.

The supporting cast, consisting of Michael Peña, Danny Glover, Kate Mara, Elias Koteas, and an incredibly nasty Ned Betty, is a blast to watch, which is why it makes our list of the best Antoine Fuqua movies. Don’t expect a classic, but you can do far worse on a Sunday afternoon.

Southpaw (2015)

Jake Gyllenhaal goes for broke in this dramatic yarn about a down-on-his-luck boxer who teams with a former fighter (a terrific Forest Whitaker) to reclaim his former glory. With incredible performances and standout fight sequences, Southpaw rises above the typical sports drama thanks to its reliance on character.

Sure, the plot beats are familiar, but Fuqua keeps the picture moving quickly and finds plenty of magic to go hand-in-hand with the blood and bone-breaking. And thanks to Gyllenhaal’s committed performance, viewers are always swept up in the spectacle, no matter how cliche the picture becomes.

The Equalizer (2014)

Naturally, I had to include The Equalizer on the list. Dark and brutal, this bloody thriller finds Denzel Washington kicking ass and taking names. His former government assassin, Robert McCall, is as cool as they come — he’s a cold-blooded vigilante who cares if that makes sense. Fuqua stages a handful of impressive fight sequences but never loses sight of McCall’s primary objective to rid the world of evildoers.

The shadow-drenched apartments and intense villains only add to the atmosphere, while a Home Alone-styled finale inside a Home Depot packs quite the punch. Like most of Fuqua’s projects, the grim tone can get a bit overbearing — subtlety is not his strong suit — but for those who can stomach the bone-cracking violence, The Equalizer remains one helluva good time. I’d also put The Equalizer 2 on the list, but that’d be redundant. Both are more than worth your time.

The Magnificent Seven (2016)

Fuqua’s The Magnificent Seven lacks the heart and soul of the classic 1960s Western and ups the violence to ridiculous levels. However, it’s still a rip-roaring yarn boasting an exceptional cast and a few bonkers set pieces. Starring Denzel Washington, Chris Pratt, Ethan Hawke, Vincent D’Onofrio, and a snarling Peter Sarsgaard (among others), the remake once again posits a handful of gung-ho cowboys against a group (or, in this case, an army) of bad guys defense of a minor, helpless town.

The action pops, thanks to Fuqua’s stylish direction, but the dedication to character makes the pic work. Everyone in the cast gets their moment to shine, and to Fuqua’s credit, each character leaves a lasting impact regardless of their screen time. Washington and Pratt, in particular, are fantastic, flashing their A-list movie star pedigree.

Training Day (2001)

I’m not gonna lie, Training Day is one of my absolute faves. This crime drama gem pulls no punches in its depiction of Los Angeles’ dark city streets, reveling in the grime and grit of the landscape overrun by corrupt cops and gangsters. On this canvas, Fuqua paints a fascinating drama centered around a rookie’s first day on the job with a no-nonsense veteran officer whose street-wise persona has overrun his morality. There are the usual chases and fight scenes, but Fuqua is wise enough to keep his camera focused on Denzel Washington’s brilliant Academy Award-winning performance.

Like a mad tyrant, Washington exudes rage, anger, and guilt — it’s easily the actor’s best role, which is really saying something. Ethan Hawke, likewise, delivers the goods as the naive rookie still clinging to the law. Here, we have a powerful morality tale where heroes and villains are never clearly defined. We fear Washington as much as we empathize with him. He was a good man once but ultimately lost his soul during his time on the street. It’s tough to find films as riveting as Training Day, which stands at the top of our list of the best Antoine Fuqua movies.

Fuqua, take a bow!

Death Sentence Is James Wan’s Most Underappreciated Movie

Credit: 20th Century Fox

James Wan is one of the biggest influences on 21st century horror.

Saw, Insidious, The Conjuring, and Malignant alone are all regarded as big names in horror. The first three of those have spawned a whopping 21 sequels or spinoffs to date. Just for fun, Wan has also thrown in a Fast & Furious sequel and made Aquaman a respectable comic book movie.

But in the years between Saw’s success and Insidious, Wan was shaping his vision. Trying not to be stuck in an ever-decreasing cycle of schlocky violent horror, Wan began to branch out. Deadly Silence’s puppet-from-hell melodrama is a world away from the grim nastiness of Saw. But with Death Sentence, Wan found the humanity that would help Insidious and The Conjuring connect with audiences so well.

Released in 2007, the same year as Dead Silence, Death Sentence sees a mild-mannered family man and executive Nick Hume (Kevin Bacon) have his life flipped upside down by a horrific event. His son is murdered as part of a gang initiation, and driven by grief and the injustice of the killer’s sentencing, Nick takes the fight to the gang with violence. But the warfare escalates, and Nick must take things to unspeakable levels of brutality.

If the violent revenge plot sounds at all familiar, Death Sentence was originally a novel. A follow-up to Death Wish, which famously got made into a movie starring Charles Bronson. The author, Brian Garfield, was not especially keen on how Death Wish got turned into a sequel-churning machine that increasingly missed the point. However, Garfield fancied what Wan had done with Death Sentence, feeling it got what he was going for in the novel.

Bringing Home the Bacon

Credit: 20th Century Fox

Kevin Bacon is key to making Death Sentence work. We’ve seen Bacon as a likable everyman, an utter creep, and a man losing his mind in other films, and this role feels like a melting pot of everything Bacon can do so well. You can believe he’s a grieving father as much as you can believe he’s a boring management type, but also never doubt he can bash a gangbanger’s head in with a baseball bat.

While this isn’t strictly horror from Wan, his knowledge and expertise in that genre shine through the grimy gnarly core of Death Sentence. This is a bleak, unforgiving revenge flick. Nick’s vengeance for his son leads to a second dose of personal tragedy where he’s lucky (or unlucky) to be left alive.

Wan paints this journey of retribution and suffering with empathy for Nick’s plight and mild scorn for his actions. The suicide run to the gang’s headquarters brings carnage, but ends with a mocking jab at what Nick has been reduced to. When Nick’s work is done, the finale mocks Nick one more time in the comfort of his own home.

Death Sentence reminds us that there’s often no justice in vigilante justice. That even the most well-intentioned vendettas have tragic consequences. It’s a revenge flick that doesn’t make revenge seem glamorous or cool. A rarity — even today.

The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon & More to Resume Production Due to Strike Agreements

The Walking Dead strike

AMC has struck agreements with SAG-AFTRA to continue filming some of its series during the ongoing strikes, including The Walking Dead‘s spin-offs.

Which The Walking Dead shows can film during the strike?

Deadline has reported that AMC Networks has made agreements with SAG-AFTRA so that The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live, and Interview with the Vampire can resume production amidst the SAG-AFTRA strike, which began on July 14.

The outlet notes that the agreements are specific to those series and not a blanket agreement between AMC and SAG-AFTRA. It also states that Daryl Dixon Season 2 is filming in Europe and that Interview With the Vampire is filming in Prague. Additionally, The Walking Dead: The Ones Who Live will resume its post-production process.

These aren’t the only shows to reach such agreements, though they’re likely the most major ones to do so. Other such series include the Jesus Christ-focused show The Chosen, Apple’s Tehran, and Hal and Harper.

SAG-AFTRA also keeps a running list of which projects it has handed out agreements to. So far, over 200 projects have been given passes to continue filming. Some of these include high-profile projects from studios like A24’s Death of a Unicorn starring Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega, and Mother Mary starring Michaela Coel and Anne Hathaway. Ferrari, which stars Adam Driver and Penélope Cruz, was also recently given an interim agreement.

FearDotCom Almost Got It Right About the Horrors of the Internet

Credit: Warner Bros.

On this day in 2002, William Malone’s FearDotCom warned us that the internet would become a dangerous cursed place. If that wasn’t prophetic enough, the alleged studio interference involved with the production of the film also showed us oblivious rich guys will take any enjoyment out of it too.

Detective Mike Reilly (Stephen Dorff) becomes embroiled in a mysterious case of murder involving four bodies found in the grimy, gritty underbelly of New York. He ends up teaming with Terry Hudson (Natascha McElhone), a Department of Health researcher to investigate the cause behind them. The duo discover it could be connected to a website called feardotcom(.com) that each victim had logged onto 48 hours before their death. It turns out the site causes anyone who visits it to die 48 hours afterward, and the cause of death is inspired by the victim’s personal fear. If you’ve watched the usual J-Horror suspects from that time, you’ll have a fair idea of where this one ends up going.

The movie is unfortunately a messy, incoherent wreck with flashes of something more interesting. Malone wanted to evoke the feeling of a nightmare and succeed in positive and negative ways equally. The central premise shouldn’t be too beholden to logic, but the little it needs to have some believability is missing. The cursed site shouldn’t really get off the ground considering its setup.

It may not have been a very good horror movie, but FearDotCom has moments that echo through horror since. There’s something daringly experimental in there at times, and you almost feel like you can see the true vision as the movie reaches its conclusion. It’s a fusion of J-Horror curses with the gritty procedural drama of David Fincher‘s Seven that desperately tries to shape that into a singular identity.

Welcome to the Internet

Credit: Warner Bros.

Its lack of success is almost blatantly in part due to a severe bout of studio interference, probably born from wanting Malone to make something like his House on Haunted Hill remake several years earlier. But Malone’s other work shows similar flaws that appear in FearDotCom, so it’s not entirely down to the studio. There is at least an intent that’s understandable though.

The internet was still rarified air for many in 2002, including those responsible for depicting it in film, so there were some interesting depictions of how it works. The common point to be mined back then was a lack of understanding surrounding technology that inevitably leads to unearned fear of it being something more sinister. Nowadays we drown in hysterical reactions to technological change because, ironically, the internet has crowbarred open our skulls open to let more variants of attention-seeking dumbos into our lives as well as those voicing more genuine concerns. But then, it was just blissful, frustrating ignorance from a generation who’d not grown up with it.

It made sense then that tech-ignorant parents would look at this supposed Pandora’s box of possibility and be worried their child was going to be witnessing something unknown and evil because it was the great unknown, even to those who used the internet regularly then. The delivery may be broken, but on this level, FearDotCom utilizes the horror of the unknown and the internet correctly.

The Nun 2 Video: James Wan Teases Sequel’s Ties to The Conjuring Story

A brand new The Nun 2 video for New Line Cinema’s latest installment to The Conjuring Universe has released. It features commentary by franchise creator James Wan, director Michael Chaves, and the cast as they discussed Valak’s return. The film is currently slated to hit theaters on September 8.

In the video, Wan seemingly teases The Nun 2’s connection to the franchise’s main Conjuring story, hinting at a full-circle moment that would tie Valak to the Warrens. The featurette also offers new details to the story including the demon nun’s bloody quest to find an ancient relic that would make its more powerful. The church is once again relying on Taissa Farmiga’s Sister Irene to once again stop Valak before it keeps on killing priests and nuns across Europe.

Check out The Nun 2 featurette below (watch more trailers):

Who’s involved in The Nun 2?

“1956 – France. A priest is murdered,” the synopsis for the film reads. “An evil is spreading. The sequel to the worldwide smash hit follows Sister Irene as she once again comes face-to-face with Valak, the demon nun.”

The Nun 2 is directed by Michael Chaves (The Curse of La Llorona, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It) from a screenplay written by Richard Naing and Ian Goldberg, based on Akela Cooper’s latest draft. Joining Farmiga in the horror sequel are Jonas Bloquet as Frenchie/ Maurice, Bonnie Aarons as Valak, along with franchise newcomers Storm Reid, Anna Popplewell, and Katelyn Rose Downey.

Both Wan and Peter Safran produce. Richard Brener, Dave Neustadter, Victoria Palmeri, Gary Dauberman, Michael Clear, Judson Scott, and Michael Polaire serve as executive producers. The creative also consists of cinematographer Tristan Nyby, production designer Stéphane Cressend, editor Gregory Plotkin, visual effects producer Sophie A. Leclerc, costume designer Agnès Béziers, and composer Marco Beltrami.

This past month, Bonnie Aarons filed a lawsuit against Warner over hidden revenue from merchandise.

You Don’t Own Me: CBS Studios Developing Barbie vs. Bratz Series

Barbie vs. Bratz TV Show

As Greta Gerwig’s live-action Barbie movie continues to dominate the summer box office, CBS Studios doubles down on the ongoing Barbie phenomenon with the development of a brand-new series. According to Deadline, CBS Studios has landed the rights to the series adaptation of law professor Orly Lobel’s You Don’t Own Me book, which explores the history of the Barbie and Bratz rivalry. The outlet notes that the acquisition was done prior to the WGA strike and the theatrical release of Barbie.

What to expect in You Don’t Own Me?

Lobel’s You Don’t Own Me: How Mattel v. MGA Entertainment Exposed Barbie’s Dark Side also follows the parallel journeys of Barbie creator Ruth Handler and Bratz creator Carter Bryant, who previously worked for Mattel designing outfits for the Barbie toy line. Bryant sold his idea to Mattel’s rival MGA, which led to a decade-long battle between toy companies.

“This entertaining and provocative work pits audacious MGA against behemoth Mattel, shows how an idea turns into a product, and explores the two different versions of womanhood, represented by traditional all-American Barbie and her defiant, anti-establishment rival―the only doll to come close to outselling her,” reads the book’s synopsis. “In an era when workers may be asked to sign contracts granting their employers the rights to and income resulting from their ideas―whether conceived during work hours or on their own time―Lobel’s deeply researched story is a riveting and thought-provoking contribution to the contentious debate over creativity and intellectual property.”

At the time of writing, Warner Bros.’ film adaptation of Barbie is close to beating The Super Mario Bros. Movie as the highest-grossing movie of 2023. It currently holds a worldwide gross of over $1.34 billion at the box office. The film stars Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, America Ferrera, Kate McKinnon, Ariana Greenblatt, Michael Cera, Will Ferrell, Simu Liu, Kingsley Ben-Adir, Scott Evans, Alexandra Shipp, Emma Mackey, Issa Rae, Hari Nef, Helen Mirren, Dua Lipa, and more.

New Naruto Anime Episodes Release Date Delayed

New Naruto Anime Episodes Release Date Delayed

Studio Pierrot’s planned batch of four new Naruto anime episodes have been delayed, with the company apologizing in a blog post.

What do we know about the new Naruto episodes?

The four new Naruto anime episodes were originally set to begin airing on September 3, 2023, and run for four weeks as a celebration of Naruto’s 20th anniversary. However, in a blog post on the official Naruto website, the production committee behind the series said that they’ve decided to postpone the release “due to the further improvement of the quality of this work.”

“We sincerely apologize to all the fans who have been looking forward to the broadcast,” said the company in its announcement. “Regarding the new broadcast schedule, we will announce it on the official website and various SNS as soon as it is decided. In addition, regarding the scheduled schedule for the new broadcast, we will broadcast the masterpiece selection of the TV animation ‘Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.'”

In the blog post, the company also notes that it’s been about 6 years and 5 months since Studio Pierrot has produced any Naruto-themed content, which likely contributes to the delay and time to perfect the show.

The Naruto anime debuted in Japan on October 3, 2002. The first part of the anime, simply titled Naruto, covered Part 1 of the manga and aired until early 2007, at which point the story featured a time skip. From then on, the series would cover Part 2 of the manga and would change its title to Naruto: Shippuden. That ran until 2017, when the series ended and was followed-up by the sequel series Boruto: Naruto Next Generations.

The series follows the titular ninja as he strives to become the leader of the Village Hidden in the Leaves. Naruto has enjoyed immense popularity since its debut, becoming one of Shonen Jump’s iconic “Big Three” series of the mid-2000s alongside One Piece and Bleach.

Rob Zombie’s Halloween Movies Struggle To Blend Remake and Reimagining

Credit: Dimension Films

During the first 22 years of Halloween’s existence, it ventured into all sorts of territories and branched off into all manner of timelines. Eventually, someone was going to remake it. Rob Zombie stepped up and the result were reimaginings of the first two movies that still divide opinion to this day.

Halloween: Resurrection had effectively killed off the Halloween franchise as it was. Its release in 2002 undid the good work in Halloween H20 (but not Josh Hartnett’s hair), and generally felt like the most cynical, lazy use of the Halloween name to date. As horror itself was shifting into a heavy remake phase, it was probably the right time to start over.

It was just shy of the series’ 30th anniversary in 2007 when Zombie, the musician and director of gloopy horror hits such as The Devil’s Rejects, took on the task of remaking John Carpenter‘s seminal 1978 slasher. His original plan was to have the first film be entirely about the younger years of Michael Myers. You know, the stuff in between murdering his sister and coming back to murder his other sister.

That didn’t quite happen as planned (Weinstein involvement unsurprisingly caused issues with these films), so instead Halloween (2007) is that for half of the runtime, and then becomes a full remake of the first movie with a more violent twist. In Zombie’s version, young Michael is a troubled boy from a very broken home. It’s shown there’s something fundamentally wrong with him beyond his living situation, but the lengthy attempt to give a reason for Michael’s psychopathic tendencies doesn’t land particularly well. It feels needless for the character we know. The performance from Daeg Ferch as young Myers is good though.

A Masterclass in Brutality

Credit: Dimension Films

Both of Zombie’s films are fine slashers in their own right, but as Halloween movies, they frustrate, like two very good slasher movies that happened to be draped in Halloween costumes.

If you can remove yourself from the connection to some degree, the latter half of the first film is a masterclass in brutality. Tyler Mane’s Michael Myers is a towering slab of terror that exudes an intimidating aura every time he shows up.

Halloween II follows similar beats to the original Halloween II in that it largely takes place in a hospital, but Zombie’s film strays further and further from being a Halloween entry and that builds frustration once more.

A key issue is Scout Taylor-Compton as an unlikable, annoying Laurie Strode (more so than in the first film). And Malcolm McDowell‘s Loomis is reduced to being a Gail Weathers wannabe whilst a slew of visions, while visually intriguing, fail to deliver anything of value. Zombie tries so hard to distance his take from the original in so many ways that it feels counterintuitive when he then turns around and plays Carpenter’s score or homages what came before.

The opening sequence could have been a great breaking-off point to take the film somewhere truly new by slicing through an established story, but it becomes clearer and clearer that it is going to bail on that promise. To the point, I actually sighed dramatically the first time I saw it confirmed.

Normally the remark made when someone complains about remakes is ”the originals still exist”, but that’s exactly what makes these movies so frustrating. It occasionally succeeds in doing something new with a very tired franchise, and Zombie’s love for Halloween is evident in many positive ways, but the balance between reinvention and remake is too volatile to settle into a new solid form.

The less precious you are about Halloween as a franchise, the more you’ll get out of Zombie’s versions. Halloween is probably the most divisive of all the slasher franchises out there, so at the very least, Zombie succeeded in making them feel like a familiar part of Halloween’s legacy.
