The Creator Review: A Beautifully Mediocre Sci-Fi Movie

John David Washington as Joshua in 20th Century Studios' THE CREATOR. Photo courtesy of 20th Century Studios. © 2023 20th Century Studios. All Rights Reserved.

Artificial intelligence is at the forefront of every discussion we’ve been having in the entertainment industry. A big reason why the WGA and SAG-AFTRA went on strike is the looming threat that AI poses to their jobs. With the WGA strike reaching an end recently, it’s poetic that one of the first movies to release is The Creator, a science fiction action thriller grappling with humans and their relationship to A.I. The film has a strong start with commercials showing humans and robots coexisting peacefully until A.I. kills a million people with a nuclear warhead.

From there, we enter a visually breathtaking but ultimately familiar sci-fi outing. In an early scene, we meet Sergeant Joshua Taylor (John David Washington) and his wife, Maya Fey-Taylor (Gemma Chan). She is pregnant with his child, and they share a loving moment in bed together. However, whenever a movie starts like this, you know it won’t end well for the wife and her unborn baby. Sure enough, she is killed in an explosion caused by the A.I. war a few minutes later, fridging her and leaving Joshua a depressed, grieving man. Joshua is afflicted with what I like to call DWS (Dead Wife Syndrome), which we’ve seen in other male protagonists from 2023 films like Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves and Haunted Mansion.

If you or a loved one may be suffering from DWS, there is no toll-free number you can dial. All you can do is have flashbacks to the happy memories you shared together, sometimes with a POV shot in bed or, in the case of this movie (and many others), happy memories on a beach. On a serious note, the emotional core with the wife is only half-effective because we only get a sense of who she is through flashbacks, through Joshua’s perspective. However, her untimely death is what leads Joshua down a sad route where he only wants to talk to her one last time and no longer believes there is any humanity in A.I., saying it is all just programming.

Soon enough, we have our inciting event, as two people knock on his door and invite the retired hero back for one last fight. We have our call to adventure, followed by our hero’s refusal of the call. Eventually, of course, Joshua gives in, and the sci-fi action thriller begins. There’s some fantastic world-building in The Creator. It’s a lived-in world that lends itself to futuristic weapons and suits. Unfortunately, the suits and weapons don’t reinvent the wheel here, giving us stun guns and big armor but not doing anything more unique than that.

Gareth Edwards directs this film. If you’ve seen any of his previous work, like Rogue One: A Star Wars Story and his 2014 Godzilla movie, you know that Edwards has a strong eye for spectacle. You feel the grand nature of everything, and he helms The Creator with a strong sense of scope. However, this screenplay, written by him and Chris Weitz, plays into every sci-fi trope you’ve seen done better in other movies. We have a scene where two characters shoot at each other, and then we cut away before seeing who landed the shot. This scene exists in movies and TV everywhere. Marvel just did this in their show Secret Invasion. Of course, this is not Edwards plagiarizing Marvel; this is a tired screenwriting trope that shows up everywhere.

We have the classic lines, “We’ve got company!” and “Call in the cavalry!” There are one or two abrupt tonal shifts between humorous and serious moments in the film, which feel jarring. A few significant revelations are not directed with the right amount of intensity and urgency they deserve. Furthermore, the action set pieces don’t feel like set pieces. There are shootouts and violence all throughout The Creator, but there isn’t a single one that stands out above the rest. Most of them are forgettable.

But let’s talk about the strongest aspect of the film: the cinematography. Greig Fraser, the brilliant cinematographer behind Rogue One, Dune, and The Batman, worked on this film for a while. He then shifted to a remote role to work on Dune: Part Two, and the rest of the shoot was carried out by cinematographer Oren Soffer in his first film production for a major studio. On a personal note, Soffer and I share an alma mater, so seeing him get a gig like this is wonderful. On an objective note, this movie is visually breathtaking. Every frame is gorgeous, with the colors popping off the screen and immersing you in a sci-fi world. This is even more impressive when you find out that the film was shot on a Sony FX3, a video camera that can be purchased at Best Buy for much less than your average RED cinema camera.

Lighting is key to making an image look good, and my unwavering praise goes to Fraser, Soffer, and gaffer Jonny Franklin for a job well done. I wish this work surrounded more than an undercooked screenplay that had me checking my watch more often than I should have. However, the clichés are baked into this premise. Joshua meets a robot child whom he names Alphie (Madeleine Yuna Voyles), and they go on a mission together where he keeps her safe. First of all, if you want to see an adaptation of the Lone Wolf and Cub story in a high-tech sci-fi world, there’s always The Mandalorian. Secondly, their relationship has a few great moments, but it ultimately does not get you on board for the emotional ride.

The Creator Review: The Final Verdict

For the most part, Alphie is a cheat code in a video game. Alphie is so powerful that she can manipulate technology remotely. She’s so powerful that she becomes a much more interesting and powerful character than our protagonist Joshua. Although Washington gets a few moments to shine comedically (the same way Christopher Nolan gave him a few moments in Tenet), he’s not fully realized beyond his grief. The lack of one clear antagonistic force in this narrative also works against this movie rather than for it. Ultimately, there’s a lot that viewers will love about The Creator. There’s a strong vision here and a mesmerizing world. But there ultimately isn’t enough here to meet the potential.

SCORE: 5/10

As ComingSoon’s review policy explains, a score of 5 equates to “Mediocre.” The positives and negatives wind up negating each other, making it a wash.

Netflix’s The Perfect Couple Series Production Disrupted by SAG-AFTRA Protests

Netflix's The Perfect Couple Series Production Disrupted by SAG-AFTRA Protests

The Netflix production of its limited series The Perfect Couple was disrupted this week by local SAG-AFTRA picketing.

According to a recent report from Deadline, the series was filming in Nantucket, Massachusetts this week when they were met with local protestors. Speaking to a local strike Captain in the area, the individual confirmed that they had heard filming would be underway, with Netflix looking to film people driving cars around — a job that normally would go to a union member.

“They’re messing with our money,” one Massachusetts actor said to Deadline.

What is The Perfect Couple about?

The series, which is based on the Elin Hilderbrand novel of the same, is set to star Nicole Kidman, Liev Schreiber, and Dakota Fanning. None of the stars of the series were on hand for filming, however, as they continue to take part in the ongoing SAG-AFTRA strike.

“Netflix was trying to film pedestrians and make them unintentional scabs. They didn’t get to do it. IATSE didn’t cross the picket line and they didn’t get the filming done,” one SAG-AFTRA captain told Deadline before going to mention that Hilderbrand was on hand for the filming and not happy with the stoppage. “(author) Elin Hilderbrand confronted us in the morning and said we were crushing her dreams. Reamed us out and stomped off in tears.”

Despite the picketing, Deadline reported that filming for the series wasn’t completely shut down. Production has reportedly moved elsewhere for filming. It’s unclear if the studio will continue to take the same tact.

Razer Wolverine V2 Pro Review: Premium PS5 Controller Impresses

Razer Wolverine V2 Pro review

I didn’t think that the DualSense Edge would be replaced as my go-to PlayStation 5 controller anytime soon, but the Razer Wolverine V2 Pro has quickly become my default pad both on PS5 and PC. Thanks to an incredible battery life and a great directional pad that is fit for fighting games, I’ve found myself using it more often than not. With six remappable buttons and the Chroma RGB lights that Razer fans have come to expect, there’s a lot to like here, so let’s delve into what makes this controller a great purchase for those looking for a premium experience.

The first thing you’ll notice when handling the Razer Wolverine V2 Pro is the different form factor compared to a DualSense Edge. There are some more obvious changes, such as the offset analog sticks (with customizable thumbsticks) that are more akin to an Xbox controller, and there are a total of six multi-function buttons — two on the top and four on the back. It will take a bit of getting used to, but I quickly found myself enjoying this more than the other controllers currently on the market.

One of the best features of the V2 Pro is the circular directional pad, which is more what you’ll find on recent Xbox controllers. Directional pads have been one of Sony’s most disappointing aspects for generations at this point, and it was pretty ridiculous when the Edge didn’t feature a more premium d-pad. Thankfully, this premium controller doesn’t have the same problem. I found myself able to pull off maneuvers with ease in both Mortal Kombat 1 and Street Fighter 6 and felt right at home playing 2D platformers with the controller.

While there’s a lot to like, the most impressive aspect of the Razer Wolverine V2 Pro is its battery life. A single charge will help the controller last over a day’s worth of play and up to 30 hours. As someone that had to buy two DualSense controllers and alternate between them due to poor battery life, this is a revelation. Now there is a reason for this — there are no haptics in the controller or the triggers — but it’s helped further solidify what the V2 Pro is great for: While I’ll still go to my Edge for something like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is a more immersive and cinematic experience, I’ll be using the V2 Pro anytime I’m looking to play a shooter or engage in lengthy gameplay sessions.

Speaking of shooters, the Razer Wolverine V2 Pro controller is perfect for the genre thanks to its remappable buttons and its versatile triggers. Rather than simply shortening the triggers to be a button press like some competitive controllers do, Razer put in a switch on the back for each trigger that will allow for “HyperTrigger” mode to be turned on. This allows for either trigger to become quick pulls while giving you the luxury of having full trigger functionality for racing titles and other genres. This is the type of smart design I love to see as it doesn’t limit the controller’s use.

As for the remappable buttons, they can be easily customized by downloading the Razer controller app on your iOS or Android device. Setup was simple, and beyond just key mapping, you can also change up the chroma effects. Switching between profiles is also pretty simple, so you can assign ones for certain genres quickly. This is a premium product in every aspect and easy to use from setup to customization.

Razer Wolverine V2 Pro Review: Final Verdict

If you’re looking to play competitively, the Razer Wolverine V2 Pro controller is the best PlayStation 5 controller yet. It’s also incredibly handy if you’re looking for a premium controller with much better battery life, as it laps a lot of the competition in that regard. I found myself incredibly impressed with the controller and will keep on using it going forward.

The Kill Room Interview: Nicol Paone Talks the Art World & Uma Thurman

The Kill Room

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with The Kill Room director Nicol Paone about the upcoming dark comedy. Paone discussed the art world, working with Uma Thurman and Maya Hawke, and more. The film releases exclusively in theaters in Friday, September 29.

“It centers around a hitman, Reggie, his boss, an art dealer, and their money laundering scheme that accidentally turns the hitman into an overnight avant-garde sensation, forcing her to play the art world against the underworld,” reads the film‘s synopsis.

Tyler Treese: What I really liked about the movie is you really go all out on the high art world. What did you find most funny about taking digs at that environment? They’re certainly up their own ass to an extent.

Nicol Paone: I think the funniest part, to me, is the old couple making love under the bags. We just had a lot of fun with that. The script was written because … the writer, his wife owns a gallery and she’s on the board at Art Basel, and at one point, I believe while he was there, this woman got stabbed and she was walking around Art Basel bleeding and people thought it was an art exhibit. So that, to me, is a brilliant way to start a movie or to begin a project. We tried to have fun with it without being too harsh.

There’s some great dark comedy in this and your background as a comedian really shines through here. Can you speak to going that dark? How dark is too dark, or is there a “too dark?”

I think when there is a little bit of levity to something … I hesitate to say, “There’s no dark that’s too dark,” but I think for this, we walked a nice balance of … I think this could happen. It certainly could happen that someone is in the art world and they blow up and everybody has to have it, and it was sort of like a happy accident, right? I’m sure that’s happened. It’s happened at art festivals. Somebody took a picture of something on the floor and people thought it was art. So I think that 100% could happen — someone becomes famous because of a happy accident.

As far as the dark nature of it, yeah. I mean, we certainly go there, but I think we were sort of going for like Viennese Actionism, you know? I think if you look at any of those pieces, certainly in the earlier part of the movement, that stuff’s really dark and just to be dark for dark’s sake. This movie, I think, toes the line, but with a little bit of levity. I think it’s cool.

The levity definitely helps. It’s so exciting to see the all-star cast and, in particular, to see Samuel L. Jackson and Uma Thurman reunited. How exciting was that for you to get these two great stars that have a history together and play off each other so well?

It was incredible. I’m not going to lie, I wanted to shoot them from behind when they were on that bench. At the end, we’ve seen them in the movie for x amount of minutes and they’re so iconic. Just seeing their two heads together from behind, it’s like I could have played the whole scene from behind, because you know who they are and they’re so brilliant together. They play off of each other and they would kind of up the game for each other. If somebody laid out something new in take two, then Uma would take the ball and … they really were a cohesive unit and getting to watch them and be a part of that is, so far, one of the greatest thrills of my career.

This wound up being a family affair as well. Maya Hawke is in it, and I really loved the moments where she’s freaking out and screaming at her mom. Those scenes had to be so much fun to film.

So much fun. I’m sure Maya and Uma get approached all the time to do projects, and I think the thing that attracted us all to this pairing was, number one: Maya, in her own right, is an incredible actress. It wasn’t a precious onscreen mother-daughter relationship. It’s these two battling each other — an acerbic artist and a gallery owner who knows nobody was going to buy this art. She has to have these “Come to Jesus” moments with Grace’s character that, I imagine, would happen in the sequel. I just think there is such a world where those two characters can live in other than what we see on screen. I want more from them. I thought they worked together brilliantly.

A couple of times, they were both holding their hands in the same way at the same time, which was really funny to me. They’re both uniquely themselves, yet it’s obvious they’re mother and daughter, because they’re both very intelligent and the way they approach their characters is very similar. I can’t wait to watch and see what Maya does.

We see WWE Superstar Liv Morgan appear in the movie. You’re both from Jersey — how did this casting happen? Did you already know her or how’d that happen?

I didn’t know her. Liv is a friend of one of our producers and I had a meeting with her and she’s lovely. So we thought, “Let’s get her in there.”

Reggie is such a fun role for Joe Manganiello. He gets some really intense scenes and we get to see the softer side of the character that behind this art career. What stood out about working with Joe?

With Joe, it was wanting to see him in a role like this because he’s a classically trained actor and we haven’t seen him in something like this. I’ve always been a fan of his and I thought this would be really interesting. Meeting him and speaking with him, it was obvious to me that he just hadn’t had the opportunity to sink his teeth into something like this. I think what stood out for me about Joe’s work is not only his dedication to it, but the subtlety of his work. That scene with Joe and Sam when he’s saying, “When is enough enough?” Or, “When am I going to get out of this thing?”

I think it was very touching and I believe I shot the rehearsal because they came to set so amped and so pumped for that scene. I think I only did two or three takes and that’s all that that I needed because Joe was so brilliant in it, and he’s very open. Even in the scene when he says, “They got me and that’s how they got me, and now they got you too.” It’s such a softer side of the character and I think Joe can play all those levels brilliantly.

What were the biggest lessons you learned from Friendsgiving that you’re kind of able to apply here?

Trusting your instincts. Always. Always. I can see sometimes on screen when I didn’t trust my instinct and people may never notice it, but I do because those are the things that I think stick out to you as a filmmaker because you can see it on screen. Listen, art is art and it’s a process and I don’t know anyone who goes back and looks at their movies and wouldn’t change a couple of things, but I think always following your instincts is such a key component of evolving as an artist.
