I didn’t think that the DualSense Edge would be replaced as my go-to PlayStation 5 controller anytime soon, but the Razer Wolverine V2 Pro has quickly become my default pad both on PS5 and PC. Thanks to an incredible battery life and a great directional pad that is fit for fighting games, I’ve found myself using it more often than not. With six remappable buttons and the Chroma RGB lights that Razer fans have come to expect, there’s a lot to like here, so let’s delve into what makes this controller a great purchase for those looking for a premium experience.
The first thing you’ll notice when handling the Razer Wolverine V2 Pro is the different form factor compared to a DualSense Edge. There are some more obvious changes, such as the offset analog sticks (with customizable thumbsticks) that are more akin to an Xbox controller, and there are a total of six multi-function buttons — two on the top and four on the back. It will take a bit of getting used to, but I quickly found myself enjoying this more than the other controllers currently on the market.
One of the best features of the V2 Pro is the circular directional pad, which is more what you’ll find on recent Xbox controllers. Directional pads have been one of Sony’s most disappointing aspects for generations at this point, and it was pretty ridiculous when the Edge didn’t feature a more premium d-pad. Thankfully, this premium controller doesn’t have the same problem. I found myself able to pull off maneuvers with ease in both Mortal Kombat 1 and Street Fighter 6 and felt right at home playing 2D platformers with the controller.
While there’s a lot to like, the most impressive aspect of the Razer Wolverine V2 Pro is its battery life. A single charge will help the controller last over a day’s worth of play and up to 30 hours. As someone that had to buy two DualSense controllers and alternate between them due to poor battery life, this is a revelation. Now there is a reason for this — there are no haptics in the controller or the triggers — but it’s helped further solidify what the V2 Pro is great for: While I’ll still go to my Edge for something like Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which is a more immersive and cinematic experience, I’ll be using the V2 Pro anytime I’m looking to play a shooter or engage in lengthy gameplay sessions.
Speaking of shooters, the Razer Wolverine V2 Pro controller is perfect for the genre thanks to its remappable buttons and its versatile triggers. Rather than simply shortening the triggers to be a button press like some competitive controllers do, Razer put in a switch on the back for each trigger that will allow for “HyperTrigger” mode to be turned on. This allows for either trigger to become quick pulls while giving you the luxury of having full trigger functionality for racing titles and other genres. This is the type of smart design I love to see as it doesn’t limit the controller’s use.
As for the remappable buttons, they can be easily customized by downloading the Razer controller app on your iOS or Android device. Setup was simple, and beyond just key mapping, you can also change up the chroma effects. Switching between profiles is also pretty simple, so you can assign ones for certain genres quickly. This is a premium product in every aspect and easy to use from setup to customization.
Razer Wolverine V2 Pro Review: Final Verdict
If you’re looking to play competitively, the Razer Wolverine V2 Pro controller is the best PlayStation 5 controller yet. It’s also incredibly handy if you’re looking for a premium controller with much better battery life, as it laps a lot of the competition in that regard. I found myself incredibly impressed with the controller and will keep on using it going forward.
