According to Variety, Grey’s Anatomy vet Sara Ramírez has reportedly exited Max’s hit comedy-drama And Just Like That after being a series regular for two seasons.
Ramírez’s exit comes ahead of the Sex and the City spin-off’s scheduled production start later this year. During the first two seasons, they portrayed the role of nonbinary stand-up comedian Che Diaz, who became romantically involved with Cynthia Nixon’s Miranda. And Just Like That Season 3 is expected to premiere sometime in 2025 on Max.
“The new chapter of the groundbreaking HBO series follows Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte as they navigate the journey from the complicated reality of life and friendship in their 30s to the even more complicated reality of life and friendship in their 50s,” reads the logline.
Who’s involved in And Just Like That?
And Just Like That is written, directed, and executive produced by Michael Patrick King. The Sex and the City spin-off is once again being led by Sarah Jessica Parker, Cynthia Nixon, and Kristin Davis, as they reprise their respective roles as Carrie, Miranda and Charlotte. Joining them are Sarita Choudhury, Nicole Ari Parker, Karen Pittman, Mario Cantone, David Eigenberg, Evan Handler, Christopher Jackson, Niall Cunningham, Cathy Ang, Alexa Swinton and more.
Season 2 featured also featured the return of fan-favorites John Corbett as Aidan Shaw and Kim Cattrall as Samantha Jones. The latter only made a cameo appearance during the Season 2 finale. It is also executive produced by Parker, Davis, Nixon, Julie Rottenberg, Elisa Zuritsky, and John Melfi.
Speaking with The Times of London, via Variety, Villeneuve said, “Frankly, I hate dialogue. Dialogue is for theatre and television. I don’t remember movies because of a good line, I remember movies because of a strong image. I’m not interested in dialogue at all. Pure image and sound, that is the power of cinema, but it is something not obvious when you watch movies today. Movies have been corrupted by television.”
Elaborating further on his point, Villeneuve explained, “In a perfect world, I’d make a compelling movie that doesn’t feel like an experiment but does not have a single word in it either. People would leave the cinema and say, ‘Wait, there was no dialogue?’ But they won’t feel the lack.”
What movies has Denis Villeneuve made?
In addition to 2021’s Dune and 2024’s Dune: Part Two, Villeneuve is known for directing 2013’s Prisoners, 2013’s Enemy, 2015’s Sicario, 2016’s Arrival, and 2017’s Blade Runner 2049. He’s also an executive producer on Max’s upcoming Dune: Prophecy prequel series.
Villeneuve briefly considered making a limited series based on Jo Nesbø’s 2014 novel The Son; however, he opted not to because he’s more interested in making movies than television series.
“It’s a project that I absolutely love,” he said. “And I love the book. I love that writer, very strong writer. And the thing is that, I brought this project to do a miniseries, because I thought that to bring it, to try to protect all the elements of the book, it was too much for a feature film. But I did feel that the adaptation we’ve made, which I think the screenplays were excellent, but far away from my sensibility.”
Dune: Part Two releases in the United States on March 1, 2024.

Paramount’s hit biopic Bob Marley: One Love fought off three new releases to remain on top of the domestic box office with an estimated $13.5 million (-53%), per Deadline. The musical drama about the iconic musician has now accrued a solid $71.1M in North America and $121M worldwide.
Meanwhile, Sony/Crunchyroll’s Demon Slayer no Yaiba – To the Hashira Training came in at No. 2 with $11.6M, while Kingdom Story’s fact-based Ordinary Angels landed at No. 3 with $6.5M from 3,020 screens.
The only other new release, Ethan Coen’s Drive-Away Dolls, ran off with a meager $2.4M from 2,280 theaters, settling for the eighth spot. That’s lower than the $3.69M start of Focus Features’ Lisa Frankenstein.
As expected, Sony’s travesty Madame Web dipped 61% in its sophomore frame and collected just $6M, raising its domestic cume to $35.4M.
On a more positive note, the romantic comedy Anyone But You (a film that better utilizes Sydney Sweeney) cruised past the $200M global mark — wow! — while the indie hit Poor Things inched closer to $100M worldwide.
Thankfully, this weekend sees the release of the anticipated (and critically lauded) Dune: Part Two, which is expected to go bonkers in its debut week. How high will it fly? Check back next week to see where Denis Villeneuve’s epic lands.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of John Carpenter’s feature-length directorial debut. ComingSoon will cover each of the horror master’s films throughout 2024 as we chart his career from humble beginnings with a beach ball to the change in career direction that saw him bow out of movies for a while.
After cutting his directorial teeth with Dark Star, John Carpenter put himself front and center with his sophomore effort, where he created his unique style that would leave his signature all over genre cinema for the next 20 years.
Assault on Precinct 13 is Carpenter’s contemporary ode to the Western (well, it was in 1976), specifically Rio Bravo (not the only Howard Hawks film Carpenter would reimagine). Instead of the dusty plains of the Old West, Carpenter brings a violent standoff to the streets of South Central Los Angeles.
The titular precinct is all but gutted ahead of being commissioned, but cop Ethan Bishop (Austin Stoker) is assigned to it for its final night. What the film doesn’t explicitly talk about is why the precinct is closing. sure, there are other precincts to pick up the slack, but the introduction of a sadistic gang gives an underlying hint that the police have lost this area to crime and would rather keep it at arm’s length. That’s clearly why when shit hits the fan, there’s nobody around to give a damn.
This is why Bishop finds his first and last night at the precinct a lot louder than he might have expected. Not only does a busload of convicts on their way to prison end up stopping by, but a man is chased into the station by the aforementioned gang, who seem to be a bit aggrieved that he didn’t just give up and die earlier.
The skeleton staff and prisoners are given little choice but to work together to survive when the gang launches an assault on the precinct, but the alliance is naturally not a smooth one. in the end, it all falls to Bishop, steely receptionist Leigh (Laurie Zimmer), and convicted murderer Napoleon Wilson (Darwin Joston) to hold down the fort in an increasingly desperate situation.
Like many early Carpenter films, the magic is in how he recaptures the classic movie atmosphere in a more modern way. There’s a tense atmosphere in Assault on Precinct 13 that is an eerie match for Hawks’ Rio Bravo, and the tough-talking cool of the characters also replicates the brooding swagger of John Wayne, Dean Martin, Ricky Nelson, and company in that film. But its rough and ready approach holds as much debt to George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead as the tensions feel more contemporary, with a group of relative strangers given little time to get acquainted before things go South.
But that doesn’t stop us from getting some truly badass chemistry between Stoker and Joston. The pair are as far as can be from each other where the law is concerned, but a natural growing respect grows between the pair throughout the siege. Carpenter would later make a habit of creating flawed protagonists that remained likable, but this is the blueprint.
Stoker’s Bishop is all goody-two-shoes cop at first glance, but his hard edge is uncovered as the situation grows. While Joston’s Napoleon Wilson very much plays up to his reputation as a murderer but gradually shows where the context is lacking. The pair don’t exactly end the movie as twin personalities, but they discover they are much closer to each other than first appearances would suggest, which leads to one of Carpenter’s strongest endings.
Much like his juggling on Dark Star, Carpenter once again wears many hats on set, and this time his personality is far more singular in the film’s identity. Nowhjere is that felt more than in that fantastic score, inarguably the start of a stellar run of Carpenter scores that would become just as iconic in their own right as the films they spawned from.
Arrow Video has revealed a Crimson Peak Limited Edition 4K UHD release for Guillermo Del Toro’s gothic gem.
From the imagination of Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro (Pan’s Labyrinth, The Shape of Water) comes Crimson Peak, a lavish, stunningly realized journey into the dark heart of Gothic romance…
Beginning in Buffalo, New York, during the 1880s, Crimson Peak stars Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, Stoker) as Edith Cushing, an aspiring writer who is haunted by the death of her mother. Edith falls in love with seductive stranger Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston, Avengers Assemble), who whisks her off to Allerdale Hall, his baronial, yet dilapidated English mansion built upon a mountain of blood-red clay. Here Edith meets Lucille (Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty), Thomas’s sister, who at times seems hostile and jealous. As Edith struggles to feel at home in the imposing residence, she gradually uncovers a horrendous family secret and encounters supernatural forces that will help her discover the terrible truth behind Crimson Peak.
Boasting incredibly intricate and ornate production design and a rich visual style, del Toro’s film is a grandiose, boldly baroque triumph of Gothic decadence, which expertly combines and contrasts the sublimely beautiful with the shockingly grotesque. Crimson Peak is presented here in sumptuous special packaging, with a wealth of extra features, affording unprecedented insight into the making of this modern Gothic classic.

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with Mea Culpa stars Kelly Rowland and Trevante Rhodes about Tyler Perry’s new thriller. The duo spoke about their characters and the paint scene. Mea Culpa is now streaming on Netflix.
“When criminal defense attorney Mea Harper (Kelly Rowland) takes on the murder case of artist Zyair Malloy (Trevante Rhodes), the truth isn’t as obvious as it seems,” reads the movie‘s synopsis. “While she tries to determine the innocence or guilt of her cagy-yet-seductive client, it is uncovered that everyone is guilty of something. Tyler Perry’s Mea Culpa explores what happens when burning desire takes hold and things get hot … and dangerous.”
Tyler Treese: Kelly, you’re in just about every single scene of this movie. What did it mean to really get this opportunity to show yourself as a leading lady?
Kelly Rowland: I was honored that Tyler [Perry] trusted me with that space. It was a journey. It was really a journey. I remember being very nervous at first, and the more I was there, the more I found my footing … I was grateful for Tyler as well. I can’t wait to do it again, for sure.
Trevante, your character is so interesting because he is accused of murder. You have this charisma to your performance so viewers are left pondering, “Do we like this guy? Is he guilty?” Did that ambiguity impact how you played the character? How did you approach that?
Trevante Rhodes: You know, I think I approached it in just an honest way. That’s the best way I can answer that in an honest and truthful way and what was honest to him without giving too much. I think that is, at least for my liking, what kept me as a viewer in tune and paying attention because I wasn’t sure what I was looking at.
Kelly, there’s such an interesting dynamic between Mea and Zyair, because there are professional conflicts and personal conflicts, but they’re still drawn to each other. Why do you think that is?
Kelly Rowland: I mean, you’ve got to think about the fact that, without giving away too much, Mea’s existing environment doesn’t really lean in her favor. You know what I mean? Without speaking as a defense attorney, it doesn’t really lean in her favor. She is doing her job, but she can’t help but feel something. There’s an energy that Zyair possesses that she’s lacking, you know? I think that she’s so open to that, even by accident … I think that it kind of took her by surprise too. It was very, very dope to be able to walk a mile in her footsteps and understand that psyche of hers for sure.
Trevante, Tyler Perry worked with you early on in your career with If Loving You is Wrong. How was it getting to reunite and work with him again with all this extra experience under your belt?
Trevante Rhodes: Well, for me, that’s always been the operative — the idea after that was to develop some cachet, to develop some credibility within the space, to then be able to tap back with Tyler and hopefully bring more viewership and bring a level of elevation and help make it something that is better than what he’s ever done.
Kelly, I’ve never seen paint used quite the way that it’s used in this movie. It’s a very wild scene. What was your reaction when that was brought to you? It’s real memorable and it’s a great scene.
Kelly Rowland: It was our idea, yeah. It was a collaborative idea with us and Tyler and I’m happy that it was memorable. That’s what we wanted. We wanted people to be able to take so many different things away from this movie, but definitely to be able to tap into that side and to be able to be creative, essentially.

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with Mea Culpa writer and director Tyler Perry about the new legal thriller. The filmmaker discussed the difference between filming drama and comedy as well as how he went about adding twists to the film. Mea Culpa will begin streaming on Netflix on February 23.
Tyler Treese: Congrats on Mea Culpa. This is such a fun movie, and I was so glad to see Kelly Rowland get such a great and interesting leading role. How was it knowing that she could handle being in almost every single scene of this movie?
Tyler Perry: Tyler? That’s pretty awesome, man. I felt the same. I’ve been a fan of hers for a long time. I wanted to work with her. She’s stunningly beautiful, so I knew the camera loved her in every shot, but I wanted to make sure that she could deliver. I’ve watched some things that she’d done over the past, and I knew it was all there. I just knew that she had to be in the right hands to be comfortable enough to bring it all out. I’m so proud of what she did. She’s truly a leading lady, and I’m hoping that everybody who sees it, every director out there who’s looking for someone to play a role, they’re calling her up.
One thing you’ve always done with your films is capture how uncomfortable family gatherings can be. Usually, it’s for comedy. Here, it’s definitely for tension. Tell me about your approach to the dinner table scenes.
For me, that’s usually where all the drama goes down — at the dinner table, around the kitchen. No matter what family or what race — something’s going to happen around something being cooked. So having that camera going around the table like a shark, knowing that something’s going on, and the whole dynamic between husband and wife and brother-in-law and Mother-in-law … it is something that a lot of people deal with and is pretty common. To have this moment in the movie, I thought, would be something a lot of people could relate to.
From a technical standpoint, does it change a lot depending on the genre? If this was Madea Culpa, would we be using the same type of movement there?
Oh, not at all. Not at all. Madea … well, if Madea was doing a thriller, which is something I would never want to think about doing, it absolutely changes. The direction of the lighting changes, the feel changes, everything changes for whatever the film is for sure. Comedies feel very differently.
There are so many twists in this movie. I never knew what to expect, but there is a limit. You can have too many twists. How was it finding the right balance?
I don’t dictate my script to myself when I’m writing it. Whatever the characters are telling me is what I’m writing down, whatever their, whatever, because I feel like I’m, I’m taking notes from these characters as they show up in my head. This person was that evil and that person was that evil — everybody had a voice and I just went for it. I’m glad you don’t feel like it’s too much, but my audience loves too much, so I just went for it.
During a recent interview with VanityFair, Golden Globe nominee Jenna Ortega opened up about her preparation for the upcoming production start of Wednesday Season 2.
“I’ve just been reading scripts. By the time we actually start shooting, it will have been over two years since we wrapped. So internally, mentally, I’m like, ‘Okay, do I start prepping myself now?'” Ortega shared. “I don’t consider myself method or anything like that, but I do think it’s very normal for actors to naturally acclimate or take in the surroundings of their characters, especially when you’re doing something like that for so long. It might be time to start getting a little more sarcastic again or watching different movies again to get into the mindset.”
The Scream VI star also expressed her excitement for the new characters who will be joining the highly-anticipated next installment, teasing the show’s expanding supernatural world. She also promised that each episode of Season 2 will stand out on its own, just like Season 1’s school dance episode.
“Even reading scripts has been exciting, seeing all of the new characters that are coming in. We’re definitely expanding on the supernatural world,” Ortega continued. “Our show had all sorts of werewolves and vampires and da-ta-da. And I think we expand on that a little bit. I mean, in the first season we had episodes that really stood out visually, like the dance episode was a really big one for people, and that setting was very particular and it felt like Prom Night, a little bit, or Carrie. Every episode [of season two] that I’ve read so far is like that. It just stands out on its own as a very memorable scene or bit or setting, which I think is what I’m most excited for, because to pull that off for eight episodes is, I think, really incredible and really lucky.”
Who’s involved in Wednesday Season 2?
Wednesday is a coming-of-age supernatural comedy starring Jenna Ortega as the titular lead along with Catherine Zeta-Jones as Morticia Addams, Luis Guzmán as Gomez Addams, Victor Dorobantu as Thing, Isaac Ordonez as Pugsley Addams, and George Burcea as Lurch. For Season 2, Ortega will also be returning as a producer.
