The official Fruits Basket website announced that the series will receive a new compilation film of the 2019-2021 anime, titled Fruits Basket -prelude-. The main crew and cast of the series will return once again.
The film will include a variety of new scenes, including the previously announced Kyо̄ko to Katsuya no Monogatari anime that dives into the backstory of Tohru’s parents, Kyо̄ko and Katsuya. At the same time, Fruits Basket -prelude- will also include brands new scenes written specifically for the film, by the series creator Natsuki Takaya.
The film opens in theaters on February 18 in Japan, which is the same day the Blu-ray disc will release. At the moment, there’s no word on when Fruits Basket -prelude- will come west, or if it will receive an English dub.
The 2019-2021 series of Fruits Basket can be streamed in its entirety on both Funimation and Crunchyroll. The original manga first debuted in 1998, with the first anime adaption airing back in 2001. Fruits Basket tells the story of a young girl named Tohru, who ends up meeting the various boys of the Soma clan, but learns that they’re each possessed by an animal of the Chinese Zodiac.
