Eternals Records Second-Best Global Opening of the Pandemic Era

Despite some negative press surrounding Marvel’s Eternals, the superhero epic still managed to leap to the second-best worldwide opening in the pandemic era with $161.7 million, per Deadline.

Domestically, ChloĆ© Zhao’s flick earned $71 million — lower than the projected $80-85 million — from 4,090 theaters, which ranks among the lowest domestic opening weekend totals for the powerhouse studio, above The Incredible Hulk ($55 million), Ant-Man ($57 million), Captain America: The First Avenger ($65 million), and Thor ($65 million); and on par with this year’s Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($75 million), Ant-Man and the Wasp ($76 million) and the recent Black Widow ($80 million).

Of note, Shang-Chi and Black Widow amassed $418 million and $376 million worldwide, which is probably what we can expect Eternals to collect during its theatrical run. The film also played well on IMAX where it collected $13.6M across the globe and $7.6M domestically from 403 auditoriums.

Elsewhere, Dune, which lost a hefty dose of its IMAX screens to Eternals, landed at No. 2 in its third weekend with $7.6 million. To date, the sci-fi epic has earned $83.9 million domestically and $307 million worldwide.

No Time to Die came in at No. 3 with $6.1 million/$143 million total, meaning the action pic will likely end its domestic run on par with Die Another Day ($160 million), Casino Royale ($167 million), and Quantum of Solace ($168 million) when not accounting for inflation. Worldwide, Daniel Craig’s final outing as 007 has earned over $610 million and will easily leap over the worldwide total of Casino Royale ($616 million) to become the third highest-grossing pic of the franchise behind Spectre ($881 million) and Skyfall ($1.1 billion). The pic will be available to rent on Nov. 9 across all major digital platforms.
