Twisted Metal Series Picked Up by Peacock

Sony’s Twisted Metal show has now found its home. Peacock has picked up the video game adaptation, but it is still currently unknown when it’ll release on the streaming service.

Peacock also announced more of the talent behind it and more of its general premise. Anthony Mackie’s amnesia-stricken character, John Doe, is a “smart-ass milkman who talks as fast as he drives.” He then gets an opportunity to find a community as he tries to deliver a package across the wasteland. The official description even teases the series’ mascot, Sweet Tooth, which seemed inevitable anyway.

RELATED: 7 Drivers We Want To See in the Twisted Metal TV Show

It’s not yet clear who will be joining Mackie on the screen, but there will be bunch of well-known names behind the camera. Will Arnett and Marc Forman from Electric Avenue are executive producing. Michael Jonathan Smith, known for Cobra Kai, is the showrunner, writer, and executive producer. This may seem unique for a post-apocalyptic show, but it is being billed as a half-hour action comedy. Mackie is also executive producing in addition to being the show’s lead. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick from Deadpool and Zombieland are still executive producers, too. President of Scripted Content and NBCUniversal Television and Streaming Lisa Katz also gave a statement on the announcement.

Twisted Metal has been a global phenomenon for more than 25 years but it was the creative vision for this live-action adaptation, led by Michael Jonathan Smith, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, that blew us away. Also Anthony Mackie starring made it undeniable!” said Katz. “This adrenalin-infused [sic] comedy series is in expert hands with our partners at Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions and Universal Television, and will be the perfect addition to Peacock as we continue to look for uniquely entertaining programs.”

President at Sony Pictures Television Studios Jeff Frost and Co-President, Sony Pictures Television Studios Jason Clodfelter echoed her sentiments.

“We are thrilled that our first series with our good friends at Peacock is with our amazing partners at Electric Avenue, Universal Television and colleagues at PlayStation Productions,” said their statement. “Michael Jonathan Smith and Rhett and Paul have ingeniously brought this high-action comedy to life and we are so fortunate to have Anthony at the center of the show. We look forward to this incredible team blowing audiences away with this twisted and inventive concept.”

This series is said to coincide or at least be created in tandem with the unannounced, but highly rumored Twisted Metal game. Earlier reports stated that Destruction AllStars team Lucid Games originally started development, but a later report stated that Firesprite, a team with ties back to driving games, took over the project. Since Sony hasn’t announced the game, it’s impossible to say exactly what it is, but given how PlayStation said it has 10 live service games in development, it has a decent chance of being a primarily multiplayer experience. Developing live service games is a big reason why Sony just bought Bungie, too.

The highly anticipated film is already filled with a star-studded cast, including Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Rami Malek, Florence Pugh, and more. Dastmalchian’s role is currently being kept secret on the film that just recently began production this week.

The casting reunites the actor with the director who gave him his first-ever role. Dastmalchian appeared in 2008’s The Dark Knight, where he played Thomas Schiff, a role that kickstarted Dastmalchian’s career. Since then, he’s gone on to star in a variety of films, most recently James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad as Abner Krill/Polka-Dot Man, and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune, which saw him portray Piter de Vries.

Oppenheimer will be distributed theatrically worldwide by Universal Pictures. Nolan and Emma Thomas are producing through their Syncopy banner along with Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven. The film is being shot on a combination of IMAX 65mm and 65mm large-format film in multiple locations throughout the U.S. including New Mexico, California, and New Jersey.

The Batman: Matt Reeves Delivered Everything He Wanted to Do Despite PG-13 Rating

The Batman is set to premiere in theaters in just under a week, and although the film is carrying with it a PG-13 rating, director Matt Reeves still feels as if he’s accomplished everything he wanted to with the film.

RELATED: Matt Reeves and Warner Bros. ‘Have Started Talking’ About The Batman Sequel

In a recent interview, Reeves was asked whether or not he ever felt like Warner Bros. was asking him to edit material to make the film fit its rating. Reeves denied that and said that they were supportive from the very start.

“What’s so interesting is that they, and to me, the experience on the film, they have been so incredibly supportive and they loved, from the inception, the pitch,” Reeves told Collider. “Once I wanted to put it into this world and that I wanted to do a detective story noir and that whole thing, they were very responsive. They were very excited about that. I said from the beginning, to do a standalone Batman film, you really have to…There’s a long line of great movies.

“And so, the idea that you can come and just do another Batman film, it has to be a great Batman film. You have to set out to do something that feels distinctive and different and definitive. They embraced it the whole time. There was never a moment where they said to me, are you sure? Let’s not. They really leaned into everything, and I’ve had the support to do exact … I mean, I have to say, this movie is exactly the movie I wanted it to be, and they have supported me all the way through it.”

Reeves also said that the one thing Warner Bros. did do, however, was tell Reeves that the film was going to be PG-13 early on, although Reeves noted that he was still able to deliver everything he wanted to.

“So no, there was never really that moment,” said Reeves. “One thing they did do, which was my intention from the beginning, was they said, “Look, it’s important to us that the movie be PG-13. We want to make sure that we can get this … It’s a Batman movie, and we’re investing so much in it.” And I was like, “Well, in the Apes movies, I tried to sort of find that balance as well.” They were meant to be sort of … They were obviously spectacle and grand entertainment, but there was a level of intensity. I felt like in that same way, I knew that we could push the boundaries of what you could do in a PG-13 movie and still deliver everything I wanted to do.”

RELATED: Matt Reeves and Warner Bros. ‘Have Started Talking’ About The Batman Sequel

The Batman is directed by Matt Reeves from a screenplay he co-wrote with Peter Craig. Reeves is also currently developing two HBO Max series that will be set within the film’s universe. This includes a Gotham City Police project, and Penguin-centered series starring Colin Farrell.

May Calamawy’s Moon Knight Character Revealed in New Still

Many characters in Marvel Studios’ upcoming Moon Knight have yet to be revealed, but now, we do know who actress May Calamawy is set to play in the series.

RELATED: Moon Knight Images Show Khonshu, New Looks at Disney+ Show

In a new image released by Disney, Calamawy can be seen standing next to Oscar Isaac’s Marc Spector/Steven Grant. In a caption associated with the image, Disney reveals Calamawy to be playing Layla El-Faouly.

May Calamawy’s Moon Knight Character Revealed in New Still

As far as Marvel comics go, El-Faouly doesn’t seem to be an actual character to have appeared in the Moon Knight books, although it’s highly likely that she is a combination of several characters to have appeared in the series in the past. Marvel is no stranger to taking characters and merging them into one, so Calamawy’s character being wholly original wouldn’t be too shocking.

Marvel Studios’ upcoming Disney+ series Moon Knight will feature the introduction of Golden Globe winner Oscar Isaac in the titular role of Marc Spector, which marks the iconic superhero’s live-action debut and is expected to be featured in future MCU films.

“It follows Steven Grant, a mild-mannered gift-shop employee, who becomes plagued with blackouts and memories of another life,” says the official synopsis. “Steven discovers he has dissociative identity disorder and shares a body with mercenary Marc Spector. As Steven/Marc’s enemies converge upon them, they must navigate their complex identities while thrust into a deadly mystery among the powerful gods of Egypt. ”

The series will also star Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke as Arthur Harrow, May Calamawy, and the late Gaspard Ulliel as Midnight Man. Isaac is also serving as an executive producer.

Haunted Mansion is currently set to release in theaters on March 10, 2023, with Disney also setting the date for The Banshees of Inisherin, a Searchlight Pictures film that is set for a limited release on October 21, 2022.

For Haunted Mansion, its March 2023 release window positions itself well to succeed at the box office. According to a report from Deadline, no other major studio releases are set for that weekend at the moment, although Paramount’s Dungeons & Dragons film will be released a week prior to that.

Haunted Mansion will be directed by Justin Simien (Dear White People) from a screenplay written by Katie Dippold (Parks and Recreation). Further details about the new adaptation’s plot are still being kept under wraps, but Stanfield will reportedly play a widower who once believed in the supernatural but is now a rather lifeless tour guide in New Orleans’s French Quarter. Meanwhile, Haddish will portray a psychic hired to commune with the dead.

The titular theme park was first adapted into the 2003 film which starred Eddie Murphy as a workaholic realtor who along with his family gets trapped inside a mansion inhabited by ghosts.

Outlander Prequel Series Currently in Development

An Outlander prequel series is currently in development at Starz, according to a report from Variety.

RELATED: Outlander Season 6 Trailer: A New Danger Awaits for Claire and Jamie

Executive Producer and showrunner Matthew B. Roberts is attached to write and executive produce the prequel, while a writers’ room is currently being put together with the hopes of getting to work within the coming weeks.

No official plot details or information on what the series will focus on has been revealed as of yet, although Ronald D. Moore — who developed the original Outlander series for television — will also be attached to executive produce as well.

Outlander stars Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan, Sophie Skelton, Richard Rankin, Maria Doyle Kennedy, Duncan Lacroix, David Berry, César Domboy, Lauren Lyle, Colin McFarlane, and Caitlin O’Ryan. Season 6 will also introduce viewers to new characters including Mark Lewis-Jones, Alexander Vlahos, and Jessica Reynolds.

“Season 6 sees a continuation of Claire and Jamie’s fight to protect those they love, as they navigate the trials and tribulations of life in colonial America,” reads the official synopsis. “Establishing a home in the New World is by no means an easy task, particularly in the wild backcountry of North Carolina – and perhaps most significantly – during a period of dramatic political upheaval. The Frasers strive to maintain peace and flourish within a society which — as Claire knows all too well — is unwittingly marching towards Revolution. Against this backdrop, which heralds the birth of the new American nation, Claire and Jamie have built a home together at Fraser’s Ridge. They must now defend this home — established on land granted to them by the Crown — not only from external forces, but also from the increasing strife and conflict in the community within their care.”

Based on Diana Gabaldon’s ongoing bestselling novel series, Outlander begins when a 20th Century military nurse in 1945 has found herself transported back in time to 1743, where she gets to meet and fall in love with Highland warrior Jamie Fraser. The next season will be adapting Gabaldon’s sixth book in the novel series titled A Breath of Snow and Ashes.

Roberts, Toni Graphia, Andy Harries, and Jim Kohlberg. It is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Left Bank Pictures, and Story Mining & Supply Co., in association with Sony Pictures Television. The series has already been renewed for a seventh season.

Pixar has released the Turning Red featurette for its next coming-of-age fantasy comedy film, which will be making its debut on March 11, exclusively on Disney+.

The video features commentaries by Billie Eilish, Finneas O’Connell, Rosalie Chiang, and Sandra Oh as they talk about Pixar films’ entertaining and deep stories as well as its important impact on a lot of people’s lives. Producer Lindsey Collins and director Domee Shi also revealed that Turning Red‘s unique and universal story is actually inspired by some of Shi’s personal childhood experiences.

In addition, the lyrical music video for one of Billie Eilish and FINNEAS’s three songs for the film titled, “Nobody Like U” has also been revealed, featuring the voices of Jordan Fisher, Grayson Villanueva, Josh Levi, Topher Ngo, and Finneas O’Connell portraying Pixar’s first-ever fictional boy band, 4*Town.

Turning Red will be led by young actress Rosalie Chiang as she lends her voice to Mei Lee, a 13-year-old who suddenly “poofs” into a giant red panda when she gets too excited. “The film introduces Mei Lee, a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence,” reads the synopsis. “Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming, is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships, and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she ‘poofs’ into a giant red panda!”

Expect GRRM’s Tone In Elden Ring, Not Another Game of Thrones

Bandai Namco has been quick to advertise A Song of Ice and Fire writer George R.R. Martin’s involvement with Elden Ring. Even though fans are tired of waiting for his next book and were generally disappointed in the HBO show’s final season, having such a storied author attached to a game from a beloved team would obviously draw in even more people. It is an odd pairing and although there are signature elements of Martin’s writing, fans should not expect something as simple as Game of Thrones but in Dark Souls.

This is at least partially due to how Martin was involved in the project. He did not write the story for the game but set up the world and lore it would take place in. As Martin stated in his charmingly simplistic and archaic blog, he did “just a bit of worldbuilding: a deep, dark, resonant world to serve as a foundation for the game [FromSoftware] planned to create.”

RELATED: Elden Ring Has What I Dislike About Dark Souls & Love About Breath of the Wild

From his first novel Dying of the Light to A Song of Ice and Fire, Martin is known for his grim tales and Elden Ring has a fantastical and bleak world, as well, but it’s difficult to tell how much of that is from Martin himself. From’s games have always been on the darker side of fantasy, especially Bloodborne, so Elden Ring’s darkness isn’t exactly foreign to the studio. After all, in Bloodborne‘s DLC, players fight a young descendant of a god-like race right after it bursts from its dead mother’s womb and starts screaming and swinging its placenta around like a scythe.

https://www.comingsoon.net/tv/news/1212148-hbo-game-of-thrones-prequel-house-of-the-dragon-wraps-production#/slide/1

Elden Ring‘s approach to fantasy is seemingly the opposite as it is more fantastical than what Game of Thrones viewers may expect. While Martin does dip into magic now and again and has stated it is one tool in his toolbelt, From’s games are heavily coated in the unreal, often having characters that are hardly human and beings that barely resemble anything from this planet. From’s knack for monstrosities continues with Elden Ring, too, and even Game Director Hidetaka Miyazaki told Game Informer that Martin would probably be shocked at what his characters have turned into, as evidenced by the Godric the Grafted in the above picture. Miyazaki also said that Rykard was his favorite of Martin’s characters and given his grotesque appearance, it’s a little hard to imagine that that was what the author had in mind.

RELATED: HBO’s Game of Thrones Prequel House of the Dragon Wraps Production

The different storytelling habits are also another way the two entities differ. Sekiro drifted from this formula a bit, but From’s other games are mostly told through implications, vague whispers, and item descriptions. They use the medium to get players to absorb their stories rather than utilize traditional methods. Ideas and plot points are rarely, if ever, told through traditional cutscenes.

Cutscenes are usually where video games overlap the most with cinema, so Elden Ring’s lack of cutscenes (there are some, but not a lot) immediately separates it from a show like Game of Thrones. And even though there are some lore bits and item descriptions to read, they’re obviously not as chunky as a novel. The mediums that Martin is famous for are just not as present in Elden Ring.

Expect GRRM’s Tone In Elden Ring, Not Game of Thrones

But even though the glum world isn’t out of the ordinary for From and the studio tells stories differently than Martin, there are some threads that may have more of his touch. Miyazaki spoke about this before the game’s launch. Through an interview with Famitsu that FrontlineJP translated, he said the world “would not have been possible” without Martin since he added drama to the characters and complex relationships. Miyazaki even added that Martin’s mix of myth, history, and epic poems gave the team at From a “refreshing stimulus.”

This doesn’t seem like just talk as the characters in Elden Ring are often tortured and with conflicted pasts, as is the case for the demigods and beings like the aforementioned Godric. Their motivations may have the typical nuance seen in Martin’s work, but much of that is buried in lore most players probably won’t dig into since, like other From games, the narrative takes more work to assemble.

It’s more clear than something like Bloodborne, but it’s still not like most video game stories, which make it seem like its deeper aspects aren’t there. Again, From’s games are usually pretty dismal and relatively deep, so it’s hard to tell exactly where each thread began, but they are there regardless of their origin and will likely reveal themselves more over time as incredibly long explainers begin to pop up on YouTube.

No matter how the lore and writing get divided up, Elden Ring has an endlessly fascinating world full of bizarre and twisted creatures, so Martin fans may be engrossed even if somehow he only wrote seven lines of dialogue. But having a talented writer attached to it obviously didn’t hurt and doesn’t seem like From was trying to cheaply attach itself to a big name. It may not be easy to parse where each bit came from, especially since From has tweaked parts to better fit its vision. But Martin’s influence appears to be there, even if it is expressed through a different medium and bent through the lens of a developer that loves to present its stories in its own signature way.

Report: PlayStation’s Spartacus Subscription Service Tiers Priced, Detailed

PlayStation’s rumored Game Pass rival codenamed Spartacus has yet to be officially revealed. Bits and pieces have pointed to some of its features and pricing, but nothing has been concrete. And while these details still aren’t concrete since it is still unannounced, a new report has pointed to the service’s possible pricing tiers and set of features.

Games Beat’s Jeff Grubb spoke about Spartacus on his weekly paywalled show at Giant Bomb, Grubbsnax. However, he prefaced his reporting by saying that some of the information he has could be placeholder or outdated, meaning that it might not be 100% accurate by the time it actually happens (if it does). Regardless, Grubb said that it is “getting pretty close to it actually launching” and that by the end of this month or in early March, Sony wants it to hit some internal milestone so it can get ready to launch the service. This lines up with the timing from the initial Bloomberg that stated Spartacus was coming in spring.

RELATED: PlayStation Plus March 2022 Lineup Includes Dinosaurs, Samurai, a Racing Game, & More

He then moved on to the three tiers which he called Essential, Extra, and Premium. While he reiterated that the pricing could be placeholder, he said that Essential was $10 per month and is basically the current form of PlayStation Plus “with the monthly games like you know it today.”

Extra, the second tier, is $13 a month and gets access to the downloadable games catalog. Grubb said that “anything on PS Now that was downloadable will seemingly work here,” presumably meaning a whole host of PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 4 games will be accessible.

Premium is the most expensive, coming in at $16 per month, and comes with the biggest feature set. Grubb said it was “kind of” like EA Play where players get full game trials, but he wasn’t sure if that applies to “every single game that comes out.” He said that it “seems to be implying that,” though. He didn’t know how long said trials were though. For comparison, EA Play gives users 10-hour trials.

This highest tier will also have classic games and streaming (like PlayStation Now), which none of the other tiers have. However, he wasn’t clear on what exactly “classic” means here since there are plenty of PlayStation generations that could be included or omitted. The Bloomberg report from December noted that PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP titles were going to be offered.

“You also get classic games and streaming,” said Grubb. “None of the other tiers have cloud streaming. You also get classic games. What does classic games mean? I’m sorry, I wish I knew. Some of it is speculation and there’s noise in the signal, basically. I do know that it is a major part of this premium tier, so you have game trials, classic games, and streaming on this premium tier.”

MORE: Elden Ring Has What I Dislike About Dark Souls & Love About Breath of the Wild

Exact details are scarce, but Grubb’s sources seem to be loosely matching what Bloomberg first reported on, given the three tiers, mash up of PlayStation Now and Plus, and spring 2022 release window. Sony has not spoken publicly about such a service, but Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan told TASS in November 2020 that there was “actually news to come” on some sort of Game Pass subscription, but said news wouldn’t drop that day. Sony also recently began pulling PlayStation Now subscription cards, giving more credence to its existence.

Some are even expecting Sony to hold another PlayStation Showcase in March that would potentially officially reveal Spartacus and a whole host of upcoming titles. Insider Tom Henderson said that some of his sources told him that Warner Bros. wants to show off Hogwarts Legacy and that some projects relating to The Last of Us are “nearing completion.” He also reiterated that the Resident Evil 4 remake was reported to be revealed in spring 2022, which would echo how Resident Evil 2 and Resident Evil Village were both announced at Sony events in 2018 and 2020, respectively. Square Enix also promised that more information on Final Fantasy XVI would come in spring. Combined with more unknown games, indie titles releasing soon, and PlayStation VR2, and the idea of a big PlayStation event in the near future certainly seems possible.

In addition to the full film, a special introduction from director Takayuki Hirao that is exclusive to the Fathom Events screening will play.

Following the limited Fathom Events screenings, Pompo the Cinephile will release in select markets nationwide on April 29. Tickets for both events and the wider release will be available beginning on March 25, 2022, on either Fathom’s website or the official site for Pompo the Cinephile. A new teaser for the film was also released, which you can see below:

Pompo the Cinephile follows the story of Pompo, a talented producer in “Nyallywood,” who finally gets her chance to direct a big feature. “Pompo is a talented and gutsy producer in ‘Nyallywood,’ the movie-making capital of the world,” reads the official synopsis for the film. “Although she’s known for B-movies, one day Pompo tells her movie-loving but apprehensive assistant Gene that he will direct her next script: a delicate drama about an aging and tormented creative genius, starring the legendary and Brando-esque actor Martin Braddock, and a young actress seeking her first break. But when the production heads towards chaos, can Gene rise to Pompo’s challenge, and succeed as a first-time director?”
