Sony’s Twisted Metal show has now found its home. Peacock has picked up the video game adaptation, but it is still currently unknown when it’ll release on the streaming service.
Peacock also announced more of the talent behind it and more of its general premise. Anthony Mackie’s amnesia-stricken character, John Doe, is a “smart-ass milkman who talks as fast as he drives.” He then gets an opportunity to find a community as he tries to deliver a package across the wasteland. The official description even teases the series’ mascot, Sweet Tooth, which seemed inevitable anyway.

It’s not yet clear who will be joining Mackie on the screen, but there will be bunch of well-known names behind the camera. Will Arnett and Marc Forman from Electric Avenue are executive producing. Michael Jonathan Smith, known for Cobra Kai, is the showrunner, writer, and executive producer. This may seem unique for a post-apocalyptic show, but it is being billed as a half-hour action comedy. Mackie is also executive producing in addition to being the show’s lead. Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick from Deadpool and Zombieland are still executive producers, too. President of Scripted Content and NBCUniversal Television and Streaming Lisa Katz also gave a statement on the announcement.
“Twisted Metal has been a global phenomenon for more than 25 years but it was the creative vision for this live-action adaptation, led by Michael Jonathan Smith, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, that blew us away. Also Anthony Mackie starring made it undeniable!” said Katz. “This adrenalin-infused [sic] comedy series is in expert hands with our partners at Sony Pictures Television, PlayStation Productions and Universal Television, and will be the perfect addition to Peacock as we continue to look for uniquely entertaining programs.”
President at Sony Pictures Television Studios Jeff Frost and Co-President, Sony Pictures Television Studios Jason Clodfelter echoed her sentiments.
“We are thrilled that our first series with our good friends at Peacock is with our amazing partners at Electric Avenue, Universal Television and colleagues at PlayStation Productions,” said their statement. “Michael Jonathan Smith and Rhett and Paul have ingeniously brought this high-action comedy to life and we are so fortunate to have Anthony at the center of the show. We look forward to this incredible team blowing audiences away with this twisted and inventive concept.”

This series is said to coincide or at least be created in tandem with the unannounced, but highly rumored Twisted Metal game. Earlier reports stated that Destruction AllStars team Lucid Games originally started development, but a later report stated that Firesprite, a team with ties back to driving games, took over the project. Since Sony hasn’t announced the game, it’s impossible to say exactly what it is, but given how PlayStation said it has 10 live service games in development, it has a decent chance of being a primarily multiplayer experience. Developing live service games is a big reason why Sony just bought Bungie, too.
