Beauty School : Mamoru Hosoda’s Belle Gets Blu-ray and Digital Release Dates

The official home release for Mamoru Hosoda’s Belle has been set, with the film set to release both in digital and physical formats across May 2022.

First up, the digital download-to-own version of Belle will release on May 3, 2022. Then, the Blu-ray/DVD versions of the film, as well as a Target exclusive Steelbook version of the Blu-ray, will be available beginning on May 17, 2022. The film is available to pre-order now across a variety of stores, all of which can be found on GKIDS’ website.

The animated film is a modern-day reimagining of the French fairy tale Beauty and the Beast, and has received worldwide praise for its gorgeous visuals and emotional story. The latest film from Studio Chizu is helmed by director Mamoru Hosoda (Mirai, Wolf Children).

“Suzu is a shy, everyday high school student living in a rural village. For years, she has only been a shadow of herself. But when she enters ‘U,’ a massive virtual world, she escapes into her online persona as Belle, a gorgeous and globally-beloved singer,” says the official synopsis. “One day, her concert is interrupted by a monstrous creature chased by vigilantes. As their hunt escalates, Suzu embarks on an emotional and epic quest to uncover the identity of this mysterious ‘beast’ and to discover her true self in a world where you can be anyone.”

Belle is written and directed by Hosoda. The film’s crew also includes character designer Jin Kim (Frozen, Moana, Big Hero 6), as well as directors Tomm Moore and Ross Stewart of Cartoon Saloon (Wolfwalkers). It will be produced by Studio Chizu.
