Beyond the stigma of comic book adaptations, The Penguin is, quite frankly, just a great crime drama. It’s really fantastic since, at its core, it is a detailed character study with a great actor giving his all, even if he’s under layers of prosthetics. Great performances from Farrell and Milioti (who plays a psychotic version of Sofia Falcone) make each and every episode stand out. While it stands as a sequel to The Batman — and it’s easy to wonder where the heck the Caped Crusader is during all of this — it isn’t dependent on it as it can stand on its own as a tightly written and rewarding drama.
The Penguin 4K release also takes full advantage of being in UHD as it has a great HDR grade. Gotham looks truly stunning, as we get to see the criminal underbelly of the city, and you can really appreciate the fantastic detail that went into the makeup and prosthetics for the title character. I really enjoyed watching the show on streaming, but I have an even greater appreciation for it after seeing all eight episodes in 4K. The audio also holds its end of the bargain as the Dolby Atmos tracks really enrich the experience.
There’s a good amount of bonus content in The Penguin Season 1 4K, although you might’ve seen most of it before. There are Inside Gotham featurettes for each episode that go behind the scenes (these were also released on YouTube), which are fun looks at key moments. There are also around 40 minutes of additional featurettes, which dive into everything from Sofia Falcone to its depiction of Gotham. They’re all quite fun to watch as you go along (the first disc has a trio of non-spoiler ones, while the third disc has six retrospective featurettes apart from the Inside Gotham episodes. I would’ve loved some episode commentary tracks, but there’s already a lot here, so I can’t complain.
The Penguin Season 1 4K Review: Final Verdict
The Penguin is my favorite superhero show made this past decade, and even if this is the only season we get, it will hold a spot in the hearts of fans for a long time. Colin Farrell’s award-winning performance is excellent, while Cristin Milioti delivers a breakout performance that could be worthy of her own spin-off down the line. As a result, The Penguin Season 1 4K is an easy recommendation for any fan of The Batman and DC.

On March 24, David Blaine’s Do Not Attempt’s first two episodes drop on Disney Plus. The documentary series focuses on magician David Blaine connecting with the people performing incredible and jaw-dropping tricks. As the series progresses, viewers will be mesmerized by the magical events, while Blaine also strives to improve his skills.
Later, Daredevil: Born Again episodes 5 and 6 will be available on the streaming platform. The previous episode of the action-adventure series showcased Hector’s niece blaming the police for her uncle’s tragic demise. Further, Matt tries to comfort Angela and assures her that he will bring justice to Hector.
Also coming out on Disney Plus is Morphle and the Magic Pets: Shorts. The animated series chronicles the lives of Mila, her shapeshifting pet Morphle, and her stepbrother Jordie. Together, they embark on numerous adventures to save their town from trouble.
Additionally, the musical animated film Mufasa: The Lion King premieres on the streaming platform. It focuses on the life of the orphaned and lonely cub Mufasa who comes across an empathetic lion, Taka. Thus, begins an extraordinary journey of two misfits who attempt to fulfill their desires.

Paramount+ has officially enlisted two new series regulars to join the Tulsa King Season 3 cast for the upcoming return of the hit Sylvester Stallone-led crime drama. Production on the next installment had just started, after over four months since Season 2 concluded its 10-episode run.
Who is joining the Tulsa King Season 3 cast?
Robert Patrick (Terminator 2: Judgement Day, 1923) and Beau Knapp (SEAL Team, Road House) have been tapped for series regular roles in Tulsa King Season 3. Patrick will be playing the character of Jeremiah Dunmire, who’s described as “a powerful, forceful man with deep pockets in the liquor business.” Meanwhile, Knapp will portray Jeremiah’s son Cole Dunmire, who will be introduced as “a trust fund country boy with crazy in his eyes.”
Tulsa King is created and executive produced by Taylor Sheridan. For the third season, executive producer Dave Erickson (Mayor of Kingstown) has been tapped as the new showrunner. The main cast also includes Andrea Savage, Max Casella, Martin Starr, Domenick Lombardozzi, Vincent Piazza, Jay Will, Garrett Hedlund, Annabella Sciorra, and Dana Delany. It is executive produced by Stallone, David C. Glasser, Ron Burkle, Bob Yari, David Hutkin, Braden Aftergood, Jim McKay, Sheri Elwood, Ildy Modrovich and Keith Cox.
“The series follows New York mafia capo Dwight ‘The General’ Manfredi just after he is released from prison after 25 years and unceremoniously exiled by his boss to set up shop in Tulsa, Okla,” reads the synopsis. “Realizing that his mob family may not have his best interests in mind, Dwight slowly builds a crew from a group of unlikely characters, to help him establish a new criminal empire in a place that to him might as well be another planet.”

Emmy nominee Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton) has officially signed on for the leading role in The Count of Monte Cristo movie, which he will also produce through his production banner A Mighty Stranger. This project serves as the newest iteration of Alexandre Dumas’ classic 1846 French novel of the same name.
Page most recently starred in Focus Features’ spy thriller movie Black Bag, which was led by Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender. He is currently attached to lead Amazon MGM Studios’ untitled Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid-inspired series, which has been in development since 2022.
“Bold, adventurous storytelling with heart is the reason I got into this business, and is the backbone of everything we’re making,” Page said in a statement. “Working alongside incredible collaborators, A Mighty Stranger is building a slate of creative-led projects that will broaden the cultural lens through pure entertainment. That’s why we’re so excited to be bringing The Count Of Monte Cristo to global audiences, unlocking the depths of Dumas’ work in ways not seen yet.”
Who is involved in the new The Count of Monte Cristo movie?
Page’s version of The Count of Monte Cristo will be written by Patrick Ness. It will be produced by Mike Larocca and Michael Schaefer for Department M, Emily Brown for A Mighty Stranger, and Youtchi von Lintel for YouRoc. This marks Page’s first time producing a feature after he gained international recognition for his leading performance in Bridgerton Season 1.
The original novel follows the story of a man seeking revenge after he was betrayed and locked away in a solitary prison for years. It has been adapted into film and TV a number of times now dating back to 1908. This includes Paul Schrader’s 1999 film adaptation titled Forever Mine, starring Joseph Fiennes and Ray Liotta, as well as Kevin Reynolds’ 2002 film starring Jim Caviezel, Guy Pierce, the late Helen McCrory, and a then 18-year-old Henry Cavill in one of his earlier films.
On X, Reynolds posted a video featuring what appears to be all of Deadpool & Wolverine, Deadpool 2, and Deadpool in their entirety; however, the movies are highly sped up and the video is only 32 seconds long.
What did Ryan Reynolds say about the Deadpool video?
“A decade really zips by,” Reynolds’ caption reads. “Deadpool started filming 10 years ago.”
Noticeably missing from the video is any footage from X-Men Origins: Wolverine, which was the first time that Reynolds played the Wade Wilson character. It does, however, end with a moment from the Deadpool test footage that was leaked online in July 2014.
The first Deadpool movie was directed by Tim Miller. It hit theaters in February 2016 and quickly became a massive hit, raking in over $750 million at the global box office. It became the highest-grossing R-rated film; although, it was later surpassed by both Deadpool sequels, along with 2019’s Joker and 2023’s Oppenheimer.
Deadpool 2, which was directed by David Leitch, came in 2018, while Deadpool & Wolverine was released in theaters this past summer. That movie officially brought Wade into the MCU, leaving fans wondering what project Deadpool might show up in next.
Reynolds, however, hasn’t revealed anything about what the future might hold in store for the character. He told The Hollywood Reporter in December 2024 that he sees Deadpool as “a great supporting or ensemble player” rather than a potential lead in future Marvel movies.
“Deadpool works best if you take everything away from him and put his back against the wall,” he commented. “I can’t really do that again. A fourth time feels a little iterative and redundant. That doesn’t mean sacrificing fun. There is still an arc for Deadpool which is fulfilling and powerful.”

Blake Lively has joined her husband Ryan Reynolds in filing a motion to be dismissed from Justin Baldoni’s lawsuit, calling Baldoni’s claims a “profound abuse” of the legal system.
What did Blake Lively’s motion for dismissal say?
According to a new motion filed by Lively and her legal team (via Deadline), Lively cites a California misconduct law that protects individuals who report sexual misconduct from retaliatory lawsuits. Lively’s legal team claim that their motion fits perfectly into that, noting that Baldoni is “weaponizing” his defamation lawsuit.
“The law prohibits weaponizing defamation lawsuits, like this one, to retaliate against individuals who have filed legal claims or have publicly spoken out about sexual harassment and retaliation,” the motion reads, in part.
The motion also argues that Baldoni’s countersuit is nothing but the filmmaker being vindictive against Lively, a move her legal team describes as an “abuse of the legal process.”
“This lawsuit is a profound abuse of the legal process that has no place in federal court,” Mike Gottlieb and Esra Hudson, attorneys for Lively, said in a statement. “California law now expressly prohibits suing victims who make the decision to speak out against sexual harassment or retaliation, whether in a lawsuit or in the press.”
The exact law they are citing in the motion, Assembly Bill 933, was added to California law in 2023 and protects individuals who make statements about harassment, assault, or discrimination from defamation claims unless they acted with genuine malice. Should the court grant Lively’s motion, Baldoni’s lawsuit would be dismissed and the filmmaker would be forced to pay for Lively’s legal fees as well.
Reynolds filed to dismiss the suit this week
In a motion to dismiss filed this week (via Deadline), Reynolds and his legal team said that Baldoni’s entire reason for suing Reynolds are based around two times where Reynolds allegedly called Baldoni a “predator,” as well as the appearance of “Nicepool” in 2024’s Deadpool & Wolverine, a character that Baldoni claims was made and included to mock him.
“The entirety of Plaintiffs’ defamation claim appears to be based on two times that Mr. Reynolds allegedly called Mr. Baldoni a ‘predator,’” the motion reads, in part. “But, the FAC alleges no plausible facts that suggest Mr. Reynolds did not believe this comment to be true.”
Reynolds’ legal team, led by Mike Gottlieb and Esra Hudson, continued to tear down Baldoni’s lawsuit, calling it nothing more of a “gossip rag” filled with “thin-skinned outrage” than an actual legal document. Although Reynolds’ motion doesn’t exactly deny Reynolds calling Baldoni a predator, it does say that even if that happened, it doesn’t constitute defamation if Reynolds actually believes it.
“The entirety of Mr. Baldoni’s case appears to be based on Mr. Reynolds allegedly privately calling Mr. Baldoni a ‘predator,’ but here is the problem, that is not defamation unless they can show that Mr. Reynolds did not believe that statement to be true,” the motion states. “The complaint doesn’t allege that, and just the opposite, the allegations in the complaint suggest that Mr. Reynolds genuinely believes Mr. Baldoni is a predator.
“Mr. Reynolds’ wife has accused Mr. Baldoni — privately and in multiple complaints — of sexual harassment and retaliation, and as pointed out by Mr. Reynolds’ motion, Mr. Baldoni has also openly spoken about his past of mistreating women and pushing the boundaries of consent. Mr. Reynolds has a First Amendment right to express his opinion of Mr. Baldoni, which should be comforting to a group of people who have repeatedly called Ms. Lively and Mr. Reynolds ‘bullies’ and other names over the past year.”
In 1937, Walt Disney Productions made the first animated feature film ever produced in the United States. Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs won critics and audiences over and paved the way for Disney to continue making magic happen for decades. Their movies became a formative part of our childhoods for generations. Cut to 2025, where Disney is now the leader of a recent trend of sequels and live-action remakes of their animated classics. Because in an increasingly unpredictable Hollywood landscape, they’ve found their comfort in IP, using our nostalgia to create halfhearted money-makers: hence, Snow White.
It’s a bold move to remake any classic movie, but at this point, it seems like Disney will not stop until they have squeezed every bit of their greatest films dry of all their worth. Remaking the first cel-animated feature film into live-action? It can be seen as a risk-averse move, but honestly, the audacity to make something like this is commendable. That original movie is so perfect that it’s a hard act to follow, but here we are, with yet another remake that follows a similar pattern as the others. When it works, it works well. They update and expand the story to reflect modern values. But when it doesn’t work, it will make you want nothing more than to just watch the original.
Like the original, we begin with a storybook opening up and a voice telling us how the story of a fair maiden named Snow White (Rachel Zegler) grew up. This film does a wonderful job of expanding on the story we’re familiar with. Of course, we’ve gotten dozens of other live-action movies that have interpreted the Brothers Grimm’s iconic story. But this is the one that has the most elements from the 1937 Disney film while elaborating on Snow White’s relationship with her birth parents and how she ended up as the stepdaughter of a beautiful evil queen (Gal Gadot).
The film features a few new songs. It opens with a great song called “Good Things Grow,” which I quickly realized was only as great as it is because of how similar it sounds to “This is Me” from The Greatest Showman soundtrack. Benj Pasek and Justin Paul are two of the most talented songwriters in Hollywood, but they have a tendency to self-plagiarize, and this song does feel like an imitation of work we’ve heard from them previously. They also give Snow White an “I Want” song named “Waiting on a Wish,” another solid song. Pasek & Paul’s work with lyricist Jack Feldman on this film ends up giving us some of the best original songs of any live-action Disney remake (whatever we got in The Little Mermaid was not it).
Now, let’s talk about what many of us were curious about: Rachel Zegler and Gal Gadot. Zegler has had a career young actresses can only dream of: from a classic musical directed by Steven Spielberg to a DC superhero movie to a Hunger Games film to an A24 comedy, she’s done an incredible amount of work. Whoever her agent is, they deserve a raise. But is she good for the character of Snow White? Sometimes. She has a few moments where she has the right energy and a few moments where her acting is very mannered, almost as if everything she’s doing is calculated enough to a point where it feels like a performance.
If you’re not watching too closely, Zegler has a perfect Disney princess energy. Her singing voice, which she has gotten to use a lot of in her career, is splendid. She has one of the best voices in Hollywood, and she makes full use of it in this film. Because of a combination of her appearance, performance, and costume, it can sometimes feel less like we’re watching Snow White and more like someone dressed in a Snow White costume for Halloween.
Now, let’s talk about Gal Gadot. She doesn’t have a reputation for being the most talented of thespians. Sure, she’s had her fair share of high-profile roles, mainly with Wonder Woman and the Fast & Furious movies. But every few months, some terrible line reading of hers goes viral on Twitter, and the cultural zeitgeist goes towards her inability. This is a role where she could have proved everyone wrong. She doesn’t, really. Her performance is campy evil, and she’s really trying here. I commend her efforts, but she has some laughable moments. She gets a Disney villain song, but I don’t know why they’d give one to her because a singer, Gadot isn’t.
But I’ll give her credit where credit is due: there’s a scene in this film where the Evil Queen transforms herself into a homely elderly woman. Assuming that was Gadot covered in makeup and not some actress they swapped in, that’s some of the best acting of her whole career. She’s phenomenal in that scene because it’s the first time she’s been allowed to transform into something different. She’s not using her looks or voice in this moment, and this is where you can actually see that maybe, just maybe, she’s got some talent.
Here’s another key change Snow White makes. In the original film, the Prince isn’t much of a character. He shows up briefly in the beginning and then at the end to save Snow White. But this film decides to give the male character some development. He’s no longer a prince; rather, he is a local rebel and thief named Jonathan (a great name; he stole it from me, though). Andrew Burnap plays the character well, and much like The Little Mermaid remake, this movie spends more time fleshing out this romance. They’re given time in the second act to connect. Unfortunately, I didn’t see much chemistry between Zegler and Burnap; they felt like two actors instructed to act romantically in a movie, not two people genuinely falling for each other.
Many of Snow White and Jonathan’s scenes take place in a forest during the daytime. Some of these scenes look about as visually interesting as a made-for-TV movie. While there are beautiful sequences throughout this film, the forest scenes look way too boring for a movie of this size. It’s surprising that these two elements, romantic chemistry and powerful cinematography, can be missing from a Marc Webb movie. Webb has previously directed an all-time favorite of mine, 500 Days of Summer, and he is also known for directing the two Andrew Garfield Spider-Man movies. All of those films were filled with those, so it’s strange how this movie misses the mark there.
I also want to talk about the decision to make CGI dwarfs instead of casting real little people to play these characters. People of short stature have their roles in Hollywood limited already, so to see these roles be replaced with CGI seems like a misstep. It wouldn’t be as bad if the CGI wasn’t so noticeable whenever they show up, but it sticks out like a sore thumb. It had to have cost millions for Disney to pay for the VFX, motion capture actors, and voice actors. All they really needed were actual little people. Instead, the only little person they cast was Martin Klebba. But what makes it puzzling is they have another supporting character in the film who is played by a little person. It seems like a choice made to hammer home the point that these unsanitary dwarfs who work in mines and live in one house are not an actual representation of little people.
However, it seems unnecessary to do that. Keep in mind this is a fantasy film about a princess who breaks out into song and dance and can communicate with animals. Realism is not the priority, so the worry of the dwarfs being an actual representation of little people seems a bit ridiculous. But even so, the dwarfs are some of the most lovable characters in both this film and the original movie, so if anything, we could have had a movie that introduced us to new faces. We could have had some fan-favorite performances from many actors of short stature, giving them opportunities to keep working in movies and TV, but that’s an opportunity long gone. If you want to see what I just described, you can always watch the 2012 Snow White film Mirror Mirror, starring Lily Collins, Julia Roberts, and a wonderful cast of little people, including Martin Klebba.
The animal animation is good. Disney’s finally figuring out how to keep the animals expressive while retaining some realism in their live-action remakes. Some of the dance choreography works well. “Whistle While You Work” is just as wonderful as ever. Webb’s experience in music videos shines here and there, but everything still pales in comparison to the original, where it seemed like every action the characters and animals took allowed the soundscape to be made of music. This movie doesn’t keep that.
As for Erin Cressida Wilson’s screenplay, there are many good ideas here. It’s slightly funny at times, and even though I wouldn’t change a thing about the original film, it is a wise choice to develop Snow White’s love interest and that romance story. But a few elements feel out of place as well. The movie sets up something surrounding Snow White’s father, which doesn’t lead to anything particularly interesting. The final act is also quite different from the original, and the ending ends up feeling underwhelming. There was the possibility of going bigger and crazier with the climactic finale, but this finale features a dialogue-filled scene that doesn’t leave the impact it thinks it does.
Live-Action Snow White Review: Final Verdict
Overall, is this the worst Disney live-action remake? No. It’s better than Mulan and a tad better than The Little Mermaid. Unlike The Lion King, this movie actually has a few original ideas, and it knows how to take the ingredients we’re familiar with and do something new. Does it succeed at that? Partially. By the end of it, Snow White is not the fairest remake of all.
