Comedy Central Expands 'Key & Peele,' Develops Animated Spinoff

Key & PeeleKeegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele

Comedy Central is investing in Key & Peele.

The cable network has expanded the previously announced fourth season of the sketch comedy series starring Keegan Michael-Key and Jordan Peele and teamed with the duo to develop a potential animated series based on their popular "Vandaveon & Mike" characters. The season four, technically announced in October, will consist of 22 episodes, including two best-of installments. That's the largest episode count so far for the series, with eight in season one, 10 in its sophomore run and 13 last year.

The third season of Key & Peele, which wrapped its run in December, averaged 2 million total viewers a week and ranked first among men 18-34 in its Wednesdays at 10:30 p.m. slot and was in the top five among the key adults 18-49 metric.

STORY: Key and Peele: 'Lorne Michaels Has a History of Relating to White Men'

Key & Peele brings not only ratings but cache -- President Obama is a fan -- and good word-of-mouth to the network. The duo's videos, including "East/West College Bowl" and "Obama Loses His S**t" have generated more than 500 million total streams, with nine of the top 10 clips on Comedy Central's YouTube channel coming from the series. (Its first is the pair's "Substitute Teacher," with more than 44 million streams to date.)

Meanwhile, Comedy Central is teaming with Key and Peele to create an animated spinoff based on their popular Critiquer's Corner "Vandaveon & Mike" characters. The animated entry, which is in development, features the characters as 12-year-old hall monitors navigating their way through middle school. Rodney Barnes (Everybody Loves Raymond, Boondocks) is on board to exec produce alongside Joel Zadak, Allen Fischer and Brian Dobbins.

Key & Peele created Vandaveon and Mike, which first originated on YouTube, as a humorous way to provide commentary on episodes of their own show, with the characters suggesting low-brow humor to improve the series. They were since added to On-Demand episodes of the Comedy Central series.

Should the animated entry earn a series order, it would join a roster of series including Workaholics, which received a two-season pickup; Kroll Show, Broad City, Inside Amy Schumer and Tosh.0, which earned a three-season pickup in December.

For their part, Key & Peele -- who recently booked a recurring arc on FX's Fargo -- are repped by UTA and Principato-Young.

'Pretty Little Liars': Tyler Blackburn to Return as Series Regular

Tyler Blackburn Pretty Little Liars - H 2013

Tyler Blackburn is headed back to Rosewood.

ABC Family announced Wednesday that Blackburn, who toplined the shortlived spinoff Ravenswood, will return as a series regular on Pretty Little Liars for the upcoming fifth season.

The actor is expected to return as Caleb Rivers "early in the season." Though no specifics were detailed in the announcement, Caleb is expected to be back in the lives of his ex, Hanna (Ashley Benson), and the other Liars upon his return to Rosewood. Pretty Little Liars executive producer Oliver Goldstick would only say that "it's a lovely reunion." It is unclear whether other core Ravenswood characters will also re-appear on Pretty Little Liars.

PHOTOS: 2014's New Broadcast and Cable TV Shows

ABC Family canceled Ravenswood on Feb. 14 following a 10-episode run after closing the season with 1.4 million viewers. Ravenswood was given a straight-to-series order early last year, but has never been a ratings performer like Pretty Little Liars since it debuted in October.

Pretty Little Liars is produced by Alloy Entertainment with Warner Horizon Television. Marlene King Goldstick, Leslie Morgenstein and Joseph Dougherty are executive producers. Troian Bellisario, Benson, Lucy Hale, Ian Harding, Laura Leighton, Shay Mitchell, Janel Parrish and Sasha Pieterse star.

Pretty Little Liars wraps up its current fourth season on March 18, while season five kicks off June 10.

Rose McIver to Star in Rob Thomas' 'iZombie'

Rose McIver Headshot - P 2013

Rose McIver is having a stellar pilot season.

The actress, who recently boarded Lifetime's Flowers in the Attic sequel, has booked the lead role in one of The CW's buzziest pilots: Rob Thomas' iZombie.

STORY: TV Pilots 2014: The Complete Guide

The supernatural crime procedural, based on the DC Comics title of the same name, centers on Liv (McIver), a medical student-turned-zombie who takes a job in the Coroner's Office in order to gain access to the brains she must reluctantly eat so that she can maintain her humanity. However, with every brain she eats, she inherits the corpse's memories. With the help of her medical examiner boss and a police detective, she solves homicide cases in order to quiet the disturbing voices in her head.

The New Zealand-born actress last month was tapped to take over the lead role in Lifetime's Flowers in the Attic sequel Petals on the Wind. She replaces Mad Men's Kiernan Shipka, who played a younger version of the character in the first TV movie. McIver's credits include Once Upon a Time, Masters of Sex and features the Lovely Bones and Brightest Star. She's repped by WME, Australia's Sue Barnett, New Zealand's Johnson and Laird Management and Principato-Young.

Thomas will direct the pilot, which hails from Rob Thomas Productions and Warner Bros. Television. The pilot, which will film in Vancouver, is based on characters created by Chris Robertson and Michael Allred and published by DC Comics' Vertigo imprint.

McIver joins a cast that also includes One Tree Hill's Robert Buckley as Liv's love interest, Malcolm Goodwin, Alexandra Krosney and David Anders.

'Glee': Finn's Spirit Looms Large Over Nationals

Chord Overstreet Glee - H 2014

Glee creators Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk noted Finn's death would resonate throughout season five and Tuesday's episode, "City of Angels," delivered on that vow.

As New Directions headed to Los Angeles for Nationals -- where the group of ragtag singers was tasked with coming in first in order to save the club -- Finn's mother Carole (Romy Rosemont) and step-father Burt (Mike O'Malley) returned to give the club a boost.

While Carole struggled with attending Nationals, she eventually makes her way to the performance where New Directions -- up against stiff competition in the form of Throat Explosion (featuring guest star Skylar Astin).

PHOTOS: 'Glee' and 17 Other TV Shows That Lost a Star

New Directions opts to cover Boston's "More Than a Feeling" -- which carried a very "Don't Stop Believin'" feeling to it -- as well as Neil Diamond's "America," the latter of which seemed out of place until Carole put all the pieces together: The club was covering all of Finn's favorite songs. New Directions launches into the finale in their three-song set with a grand rendition of U2's "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" that ends with Sam (Chord Overstreet) triumphantly raising Finn's trademark drumsticks in the air (see photo above).

While the club didn't take home the trophy -- they came in second to Throat Explosion -- the episode was one of the season's best, with the Fox musical using classic clips of Finn from the past four seasons to augment the performance's emotional impact.

The loss of Finn, paired with the looming graduation of seniors Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz), Blaine (Darren Criss), Artie (Kevin McHale) and Sam on top of Sue's (Jane Lynch) vow to dismantle the club if it fails to win made this one of Glee's most memorable performances in its five seasons and one of the show's most solid episodes to date.

STORY: 'Glee's' Brad Falchuk on 100 Episodes, New York Shift and the Show's New Ending

Despite the second-place finish, New Directions finished strong back in Ohio when Sam and company tell Carole and Burt that the ending that they deserved was a win, when the group would have invited the couple to the stage to share in their triumph. It's then that Carole and Burt reinforce what Glee at its core is all about. "Even though he didn't have the best voice or rhythm, he always brought out the best in himself and others," Burt says. "The great thing about him is he always managed to find a way to feel like he'd won."

"Win or lose, Finn lives in you guys," Carole tells the club.

It's a fitting message that arrives as next week's 100th episode is poised to feature a slew of Glee's original stars returning to the choir room celebrate the milestone and rally around New Directions after Sue informs Will (Matthew Morrison) that the glee club will now be disbanded.

STORY: 'Glee' Cast, Creators Toast 100 Episodes

Check out the promo for the 100th episode, below, and hit the comments with your thoughts on this week's game-changer. Glee airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on Fox.

'Big Bang Theory' Renewed Through Season 10

CBS Upfronts Big Bang Theory - H 2013

CBS has handed out a hefty three-season renewal for The Big Bang Theory.

The pickup takes TV's No. 1 comedy among adults 18-49 through season 10 and extends the series through the 2016-17 season.

PHOTOS: 'The Big Bang Theory's' Nerdiest Guest Stars

"Comedy is a big part of our schedule, and The Big Bang Theory is the biggest comedy force on television,” CBS Entertainment chairman Nina Tassler said. "This multiyear deal further strengthens our network’s position for future seasons and marks another chapter in the great partnership CBS enjoys with Warner Bros. Television for delivering audiences the best in comedy. We’re proud to work with and showcase the incredible talents of [executive producers] Chuck Lorre, Steve Molaro and this amazing cast every week.”

The deal marks the second time the series, starring Emmy winner Jim Parsons, Johnny Galecki, Kaley Cuoco, Simon Helberg, Kunal Nayyar, Mayim Bialik and Melissa Rauch, has earned a massive three-season renewal.

PHOTOS: Behind the Scenes: 'The Big Bang Theory'

Now that the series has been locked up, studio Warner Bros. Television will now focus on the stars Parsons, Galecki and Cuoco, who are all seeking hefty salary increases. Sources told THR in September that the trio, who currently earn $325,000 per episode are seeking up to $1 million per half-hour. They're expected to negotiate together, while stars Helberg and Nayyar are also looking for increases and will negotiate together. Emmy nominee Bialik and Rauch recently inked new deals with WBTV, with both securing raises.

Big Bang Theory has been TV's No. 1 comedy among total viewers since the 2010-11 season. It's on par to top Emmy darling Modern Family for TV's top comedy among the advertiser-coveted adults 18-49 demo for the second season in a row. Season to date, Big Bang Theory is averaging a whopping 19.8 million viewers per week, up 4 percent year-over-year, and an impressive 6.1 among adults under 50. The series is also a hit in syndication on TBS, with repeats often topping some of the Big 4 broadcast networks' original fare and helping that network to build its comedy brand. The series has earned multiple Emmy nominations for best comedy but has yet to take home that trophy.

STORY: 'Big Bang Theory': 15 Things You Didn't Know

The Big Bang Theory renewal marks CBS' first scripted pickup for the 2014-15 season, with negotiations underway for other scripted fare including veteran procedurals CSI, NCIS, Hawaii Five-0 and comedies including Lorre's Two and a Half Men, Mom and Mike & Molly, among others.

Securing Big Bang Theory's future was a top priority for the network, which this season will bid farewell to Monday staple How I Met Your Mother. CBS recently scored rights to Thursday night NFL games, likely pushing Big Bang Theory to a new night for the first few episodes of its eighth season.

Juno Temple Casting - P 2014

HBO's rock 'n' roll drama has found its aspiring assistant.

Juno Temple (The Dark Knight Rises) has boarded the cast of the cabler's untitled rock 'n' roll drama from Martin Scorsese and Mick Jagger, The Hollywood Reporter has learned.

PHOTOS: 40 Years of HBO

From exec producers Scorsese, Jagger, George Mastras and Terence Winter, the drama is set in 1970s New York, and explores the drug- and sex-fueled music business as punk and disco were breaking out, all told through the eyes of a record executive trying to resurrect his label and find the next new sound.

Bobby Cannavale stars as Richie Finestra, the founder and president of a top-tier record label (American Century Records) with a great ear for discovering talent, who undergoes a crisis of character when confronted with a life-altering decision. House's Olivia Wilde is set as his bohemian wife.

Temple will play Jamie Vine, an ambitious assistant in the A&R department of American Century. She uses her keen abilities to manipulate people and blend into the various subcultures of the New York music underground, in order to break through the glass ceiling and get ahead at the record label.

The drama hails from Boardwalk Empire's Winter and Scorsese, the latter of whom will direct and executive produce. Winter and Mastras will pen the script and exec produce; Mastras also will serve as showrunner.

STORY: Bobby Cannavale to Star in HBO's Jagger-Scorsese-Winter Rock 'n' Roll Drama

A&E Pulls 'Those Who Kill,' Moves 'Bates Motel' to 10 p.m. (Exclusive)

Those Who Kill Chloe Sevigny - H 2014

A&E is pulling Chloe Sevigny drama Those Who Kill from the schedule.

The freshman detective drama based on the Danish format and inspired by Elsebeth Egholm's books will be pulled from the schedule effective immediately, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. A&E will move sophomore drama Bates Motel back an hour, to the 10 p.m. slot, to replace Those Who Kill. A new time slot for the latter is to be determined later this week, as the network likes the show and has faith that it can find an audience. A Bates Motel repeat will air at 9 p.m. and lead into a new episode of the Psycho prequel.

Paired with the second season of the network's critical darling Bates Motel, Those Who Kill opened March 4 to a lackluster 1.4 million viewers. That's almost half of the 3.07 million viewers who tuned in an hour earlier for the debut of Bates Motel's second season. Kill notched a 0.5 in the key adults 18-49 demographic -- nearly a third of Bates' 1.6 million. Kill shed almost half its premiere viewers with Monday's second airing, drawing 830,000 total viewers and a 0.3 in the demo.

PHOTOS: Midseason TV Preview

From Imagine Television and Fox 21, the crime procedural received a solid marketing campaign from A&E and a vote of confidence when it was paired with Bates. The series opened to mixed reviews.

The series marked the latest original scripted drama at A&E, joining Longmire. On the pilot side, the network only has comedy Whitey in the works.

The decision to yank Those Who Kill from its schedule comes seven months after A&E canceled The Glades, its first and longest-running original scripted drama, after four seasons. Worth noting: The Glades' Aug. 26 series finale delivered a season-best 3.4 million total viewers and 1.1 million among adults 18-49. Producer Fox Television Studios briefly tried to shop The Glades elsewhere, including to Ion; that fizzled, and the cast was released from their contracts and booked other projects.

'Tomorrow People' Stars Prep for Monday Move With Cheeky Promo (Video)

The Tomorrow People is heading to a new night starting next week. To get the word out, The CW tasked castmembers to film special promos.

In a spot released Wednesday, Mark Pellegrino (Jedikiah) and Madeleine Mantock (Astrid) are in a find themselves in a tense showdown inside an Ultra interrogation room.

Jedikiah: "I know you know Astrid... The Tomorrow People -- they're not where they're supposed to be. Where are they?" But Astrid's not biting. It takes a gun pointed at her head to prompt an answer about the new Monday time slot.

"Good... I'll be watching." The question is, will viewers?

Executive producer Phil Klemmer told The Hollywood Reporter earlier this month that he was "excited for the opportunity about making a foothold" on Mondays. "We're doing a couple guerilla campaigns and promos that we shot in between takes. We're hoping to get the word out and I feel like our fans are super loyal and I feel like they're going to travel with us and hopefully their friends," he said.

The Tomorrow People premieres in its new Monday home starting March 17 at 9 p.m. on The CW.

Adrian Pasdar Joins Marvel's 'Agents of SHIELD'

Adrian Pasdar as Glenn Talbot - P 2014

Not content with bringing in Bill Paxton to play Agent Garrett, Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD is welcoming another familiar face to the series. Adrian Pasdar has been tapped to play Major Glenn Talbot in at least one episode of the ABC freshman drama.

Talbot is known to comic book fans as one of the many military menaces to the incredible Hulk, and Pasdar told Marvel.com that he’ll be equally problematic to Agent Coulson's (Clark Gregg) team of SHIELD agents. “Every show needs a jerk,” he said, “I guess I’m that guy.”

STORY: It’s Official: Stan Lee to Appear on ‘Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD’ (Exclusive Photo)

Agents of SHIELD is far from Pasdar’s first project with Marvel. Although he remains best known for his work in Profit and NBC’s Heroes, the actor has recently voiced Tony Stark (and his armored alter-ego, Iron Man) for multiple Marvel animated projects including Ultimate Spider-Man, Hulk and the Agents of SMASH and Avengers Assemble.

Currently, Talbot is only officially scheduled for one episode of Agents of SHIELD, but the actor is teasing a return down the line. “As willing as I am to jump when Jeph [Loeb, Marvel TV president] calls, there had to be a little bit more in it than just an episode for me,” Pasdar said. “I can’t say much more but the mustache is in a locker and it’s being taken out and prepped as we speak for next week.”

Pasdar’s first episode as Glenn Talbot will air in April. A specific date has yet to be determined. Agents of SHIELD airs Tuesdays at 8 p.m. on ABC.

'The Voice' Recap: New Words and Donuts Close Blind Auditions

The Voice Caleb Elder P 2014

The final night of The Voice blind auditions was somewhat sweet -- thanks to the donuts -- but still a little spicy and, arguably, bland.

PHOTOS: 'The Voice': Meet the Season 6 Singers

With all the teams entering the episode at 11 singers each, Tuesday night's episode found Blake Shelton, Usher, Shakira and Adam Levine supporting each other once their slots were filled -- which means that there was very little tug-of-war bickering in the three weeks of auditions.

But hey, that's what next week's battles and steals are for, right?

Until then, meet the final recruits of season six:

Kaleigh Glanton
Song: "Have You Ever Seen the Rain"
Coaches who turned their chairs: all four
The daughter and duo partner of a professional classical guitarist, the fitness fanatic from Kansas auditioned with the Creedence Clearwater Revival classic. While Levine strategically criticized her and prematurely said, "Welcome to Team Adam," and Shakira said that two quirky girls should "quirk up," Glanton joined Shelton's team.

STORY: Shakira Sings Country Duet With Blake Shelton: 'I Was a Little Tired of L.A.'

Brittnee Camelle
Song: "Skyscraper"
Coaches who turned their chairs: Usher, Shakira
The biracial nursing student from Georgia maintained control throughout the Demi Lovato ballad, and though Usher pointed out that she didn't hit the high note just right, he offered his support, while Shakira played the female card hard. When Camelle said she wants to inspired people, Usher said of Shakira, "She understands that, I overstand that," while Levine shouted, "He made up a word!" It was enough to join Team Usher.

Lindsay Bruce
Song: "Even If It Breaks Your Heart"
Coaches who turned their chairs: Levine, Shakira
The California native, who lost her uncle in the 9/11 attacks, went for the Eli Young Band track. Shakira again touted that her guest mentor for the season is Miranda Lambert, which turned Bruce into the final member of Team Shakira.

STORY: 'The Voice': Usher's Blind Audition Strategy, Mark Burnett on Cee Lo Green's Exit

Caleb Elder
Song: "Groove Me"
Coaches who turned their chairs: Levine
The self-taught instrumentalist put his audio engineering studies on hold to pursue music, and supports himself by working at a donut shop. Once Levine – his dream coach and the only available coach – turned his chair, Elder lost it little bit on the King Floyd track, but jumped around plenty onstage in celebration. "We're gonna eat donuts on my team!" shouted Levine.

The Voice battles – with guest mentors Lambert, Aloe Blacc, Jill Scott and The Band Perry – begin Monday at 8 p.m. on NBC.

Which blind audition was your favorite? Whose battles are you excited for most? Sound off in the comments below.

TV Ratings: CNN Weed Doc Pops at 10 O'Clock

Marijuana - H 2014

Pun alert: CNN got a ratings high Tuesday night thanks to Dr. Sanjay Gupta's look at the new politics of pot. The special Weed 2: Cannabis Madness saw the cable news network's ratings spike in its ever-shifting 10 p.m. hour.

PHOTOS: 12 Pivotal Moments in Pot Culture

Among viewers in the news demo of 25-to-54, CNN averaged 354,000 during the hour -- up nearly 300 percent from the time period's four-week average of just 121,000. Ten o'clock has been a tricky one for CNN: After swapping out repeats of Anderson Cooper 360, the hour has been grounds for primetime experimentation -- mostly for documentary specials.

Total viewers also swelled for the special. The network averaged 757,000, besting MSNBC for second-place status. (Weed 2: Cannabis Madness also ranked second in the demo, after Fox News Channel's Sean Hannity, besting MSNBC's Lawrence O'Donnell.)

Marijuana increasingly has been a popular topic on the cable news nets, with  Washington and Colorado recently voting to legalize the drug for recreational use.

'How I Met Your Mother' Cast Tapes 'Inside the Actors Studio' Episode (Video)

How I Met Your Mother cast inside the actors studio - H 2014"How I Met Your Mother" cast on "Inside the Actors Studio"

The How I Met Your Mother sendoff continues. The Hollywood Reporter has learned that the cast of the CBS sitcom recently taped an episode of Bravo's Inside the Actors Studio -- set to premiere just days before the comedy's March 31 series finale.

STORY: HIMYM Creators Talk About the Series Finale

Josh Radnor, Neil Patrick Harris, Alyson Hannigan, Jason Segel and Cobie Smulders all sat down with host James Lipton for the hour-long episode, going over their nine-year tenure on the show that completed filming in early March.

The ninth season has been a long ramp-up to Barney (Harris) and Robin's (Smulders) wedding, so the actors' dynamic plays a larger part in the episode.

“Barney is so flirtatious as a character that it was sort of inevitable that we were going to at least sleep together," says Smulders. "So I’m surprised and very excited that we’ve ended up here, and getting married.”

VIDEO: 'How I Met Your Mother's' Cristin Milioti Debunks Morbid Finale Theory

As for Harris, he gets a little deep when talking about about his playboy alter ego: “I think Barney’s delusional. He lies overtly about things because if it was a boring night, he’ll just make it a better night.”

The How I Met Your Mother episode of Inside the Actor's Studio airs March 27, at 8 p.m., on Bravo.

The Originals is losing a major player.

Australian actress Claire Holt, who played the memorable and opinionated Original vampire Rebekah Mikaelsen, is departing The Vampire Diaries spinoff as a series regular, The Hollywood Reporter confirms.

[Warning: Spoilers ahead.]

Awkward Ashley Rickards Season 3B Still - H 2013

It's senior year on Awkward.

The first official trailer for the MTV comedy hit the web Tuesday afternoon, and Jenna Hamilton (Ashley Rickards) is going through some major changes.

Newly single, Jenna turns to Matty (Beau Mirchoff) to keep her occupied, reverting to their "mating" ways, as Tamara (Jillian Rose Reed) so eloquently puts it. When things seem to be going the way of sophomore year, Jenna is faced with yet another obstacle to get over. "He's getting what he wants and you're not," Tamara tells Jenna. "I'm not going to be your shameful secret again," Jenna says.

STORY: MTV's 'Awkward' Bulks Up for Season 4, Adds Quartet

It seems Jenna is ready to put the boy drama behind her and focus on her college plans. But that proves easier said than done when a new boy comes into play. She's not the only one having relationship troubles, as Jake (Brett Davern) and Tamara go through their own rough patch. "O. M. Geezus. Cree. He is Taylor Swift-ing me," Tamara says, stunned.

This marks the first season without creator Lauren Iungerich and the debut of co-showrunners Chris Alberghini and Mike Chessler. Elizabeth Whitson, Kofi Siriboe, Evan Crooks and Monty Geer also join the new season, which kicks off April 15, while Nolan Funk and Jessica Lu won't be returning.

'Mad Men' Creator Matthew Weiner: Don't Read Into Our Promos (Q&A)

Mad Men S7 Key Art Don Draper Megan Draper Matthew Weiner Inset - H 2014

Matthew Weiner approaches Mad Men's latest return in unfamiliar territory. Currently on a month-long break in filming, he's almost working on several seasons at once -- since AMC announced last year that the final 14 episodes of the flagship drama would be split into two runs of seven episodes.

The first batch, in post-production and launching April 13, will have a few more contained stories than originally anticipated. The creator and showrunner, who spoke with The Hollywood Reporter on Tuesday afternoon, says the biggest challenge of the split has been working in two premieres and two finales. (He and his staff are currently in the middle of penning the second half of the season, with photography on the series wrapping for good in June.)

VIDEO: The First Trailer for Mad Men's Final Season

In typical Mad Men fashion, the well-guarded secrecy of where this season resumes is only being teased out -- by quick video of Don Draper (Jon Hamm) disembarking an airplane, a trippy poster by design legend Milton Glaser and now a slew of airport promotional stills (see below). But Weiner, for as much as his series tries to make people think, says he just wants the images to excite viewers. He also chatted about getting ready to write his characters' final scenes, his love affair with the past and the advice he recently gave David O. Russell.

Where are you in production right now?

I'm writing episode nine, and we're doing post on the first seven. The way we structured it, I directed episode seven -- the finale of the first half -- so the writing had to stop. We gave ourselves a month-hiatus from production, but the writers are now working 24 hours a day.

And when you're back filming, that's it?

We resume shooting in March, and then we'll be done shooting in June. Then I'm burying them. We shoot the final scene on June 15 or something, and then we're putting them under lock and key until April or whenever of 2015.

There has been a lot of airplane imagery in the promotions.

I don't want to disappoint any attempts to read into any meaning for the show, but we pick a milieu for the publicity photography every year where we can lean on the good looks of the cast and place them in an environment that puts people in the mood for the show. We love the contrast because there is zero glamor in air travel right now. It was just an environment to take pictures. And the fact that we had access to an old airport and real airplanes, we thought, "Why don't we just do this up?" It is in such stark contrast to today.

Where did you shoot it?

Ontario Airport in California.

One of the fastest shrinking airports in America.

Well, that might explain why they didn't have a problem with us filming there. But it's just an environment. We've done debutante parties, bar scenes, office scenes, we've done abstract a couple times. Frank Ockenfels shot them. To me, it's pretty glamorous -- but it is not related to the show. And that's not a smokescreen. It really isn't.

Six months later, how do you feel about the decision to split the seasons?

I didn't resist this. I don't think I could have. Believe it or not, I don't have control over every aspect of the show. But I also looked at it as a challenge. It was so successful for Breaking Bad building an audience that I was intrigued. The difference for us is that we don't have a year off between doing these two halves of the season. That's been positive for me, writing-wise, I can continue the story across and tell a 14-episode story, the way we always do it.

Any surprises?

What I didn't anticipate was the seven-episodes chunks would have to, to some degree, stand on their own. Organically, we've always told the show this way. Last season, hour seven was the merger. "The Suitcase" [season four] was episode seven. "The Gold Violin" [season two] was episode seven. We're always sort of using the middle of the season as a fulcrum, but when we started writing -- I thought, "Oh my god, episode eight is a premiere, which means episode seven a finale." We need to tell some stories that are contained in those chunks. It's been intense.

Does it make the goodbye any easier?

I know it's going to run by in just seven episodes, but it feels like longer. I feel like if I was watching the show, I would be excited not angry that it wasn't [ending this year]. As a TV viewer, I know it's going to be a bummer when it ends. If I was watching the show, I would be bummed.

Are there any characters you were most eager to revisit after last season?

You put characters on hiatus for episodes, sometimes they don't get juicy stories that last a season, and sometimes you look back and go, "Wow, Pete had an amazing story last season. I didn't realize that." We didn't start off the season going, "Pete is going to be really important this season." The only person I start out the season worrying about is Don.

That doesn't change in the final season?

What has really been the pressure this year, no matter what happens, is that these people are going to end this season frozen in time. That's the last time we see them. There's a pressure to make sure that everyone we deem important in the show, which is a huge ensemble, that they're treated with responsibility. I look back at the finale every season, and we do wrap up more than people think. They always feel like series finales to me. They always do. I write them that way, and I direct them that way. A couple of times, as far as I knew, they were the series finale.

With this really being the final season, are there things you've been planning a while?

I had this thing in my pocket that I've had since between seasons four and five, of how I wanted the series to end. Then I started thinking about everything that happened and what year we'd be coming back. All of that coalesces into how I want to leave everybody when the show is over. This is what Roger's last scene looks like... This is what Peggy's last scene looks like... all along the line. I have this incredible writing staff, and I've been doing that every year. And they help me get there in the most interesting way. How quickly did it happen? It happened very quickly, but what I didn't know was that we'll have had to cover some ground by episode seven. I always feel the pressure  hold the audience's attention, week to week, believe me. I want episode five to be mind-blowing. I always want the premiere to drag them into it. But it changes year to year. I'm sure that when I'm writing the finale, it will be the same process it always is. I try to get out of everything,. I try to get out of these corners we get painted into. It will be the same process it always. They'll talk me into it, and I'll be happy in the end.

A lot of Mad Men collaborations, like the poster with Glaser, have been wish fulfillment for you. How satisfying has that part of the job been?

It's incredible that I've gotten to hold hands with the past like this. I feel incredibly blessed that some of my idols have appreciated my work -- and, on the other side of it, just being in creative conversations with people you admire. I take the past very seriously. I either remind people these people are there or I just have the satisfaction of being a fan and talking to them about their work. It's very encouraging as an artist to work with Robert Morse. When the show started 1960, he was the biggest star on Broadway, and he's still working. I have Robert Towne on my right staff. I work with Frank Pierson and now Milton Glaser. For me, they're my idols. Even if I have to lure them in by employing them, getting them in my creative life has been inspiring. I hope that someone does that to me one day.

David O. Russell, who departed a ABC series, says you told him he'd have to give his whole life to TV if he did a show. Were those words of encouragement or caution?

It was a reality check. David is a very serious artist and I think led to believe that he could walk by this thing. And I said, it's the same job as feature film-making. It's going to take your whole life for you to do it the way you want to. I don't understand the huge distinction between the two forms. My kids watch everything in our house on the same screen, but going from one medium to the other, back and forth like that, becomes an issue. I think he'd been misled on some level about what it would take to do the show the way he does his movies.

'Divergent': Ellie Goulding Sings Acoustic 'Beating Heart' on 'Today' (Video)

Ellie Goulding

Before taking the stage at Madison Square Garden, Ellie Goulding stopped by Today on Wednesday morning to calmly perform "Beating Heart," one of her three songs from the Divergent soundtrack.

VIDEO: Shailene Woodley: Could 'Divergent' Character Beat Up 'Hunger Games' Heroine?

"The producers and director of this movie basically say you are the musical voice of the film," Matt Lauer said to Goulding, who also contributed vocals to the film score.

Goulding clarified that she didn't specifically pen "Beating Heart" for Divergent. "I had the song, and I performed it and recorded it, and I had given it to Greg Kurstin to produce it. I didn't know they were gonna use it for the film, but actually, when I thought about it, I thought it was kind of perfect, and it really suited the whole theme."

Dressed in an all-white outfit, she then performed an acoustic version of the newly released track.

Goulding's "Dead in the Water" and "Hanging On," from her album Halycon, are also featured on the Divergent soundtrack, which includes tracks by Zedd, Kendrick Lamar, Skrillex, A$AP Rocky and more.

Bill Paxton, Brendan Fraser Among History's All-Star 'Texas Rising' Cast

FILM: Bill Paxton

History Channel has set an all-star cast for its upcoming Texas Rising miniseries.

From the producers of its ratings juggernaut Hatfields & McCoys, Emmy nominee Bill Paxton, Brendan Fraser, Ray Liotta, Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Thomas Jane, Olivier Martinez, Chad Michael Murray, Michael Rapaport and Max Thieriot will star in the new drama, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. Oscar nominee Roland Joffe (The Mission, The Killing Fields) will direct.

The eight-hour "event series," from A+E Studios and ITV Studios America and produced by Thinkfactory, hails from Hatfields' Leslie Greif, who will executive produce the mini. Rising, which will premiere in 2015, will detail the Texas Revolution against Mexico and the rise of the legendary Texas Rangers, the oldest law enforcement group in North America. Part one is written by Greif, Darrell Fetty and Ted Mann, the latter of whom co-wrote Hatfields for History. Nights two, three and four will be written by Greif and Fetty.

STORY: The 'Bible' Effect and the Resurrection of TV Miniseries

Paxton, who earned an Emmy nomination for his role in Hatfields, will star as Sam Houston, the "father" of Texas. Fraser (The Mummy) will play Billy Anderson, a Texas Ranger with Comanche Indian Ties. Liotta (GoodFellas) is set as Lorca, an Alamo survivor seeking brutal revenge. Morgan, is was one of pilot season's most in-demand actors, is "Deaf" Smith, a deaf and grizzled veteran Texas Ranger with an advance case of consumption. Jane (Hung) will portray James Wykoff, a homesteader who finds himself living in the middle of hostile Indian territory. Martinez (Before Night Falls) will be President Gen. Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna, the tyrant dictator of Mexico. Murray (One Tree Hill) will play Mirabeau Lamar, a spirited Texas soldier who helps win the battle of San Jacinto. Rapaport (Justified) is Sgt. Ephraim Knowles, a would-be deserter and coward-turned-hero. Thieriot (Bates Motel) will play Jack Hays, a volunteer freedom fighter who becomes the youngest Texas Ranger. Additional castings are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

“From Hatfields & McCoysto The Bible to Vikings, History has made a major commitment to high-quality scripted historical dramas,” History exec vp and GM Dirk Hoogstra said. “The Texas Revolution is one of the most gut-wrenching and inspirational events in our history. Doing the story justice will be a massive undertaking and we’re excited to begin production with one of the best teams in the business.”

Added Greif: "It's exciting to be back working with History and Bill Paxton, a team that made television history with Hatfields & McCoys. The battle for Texas independence was epic and really the battle for the future of America. We have Academy Award- and Emmy-nominated talent, a stellar ensemble cast is being set, and with this team, we will seek to even further redefine and elevate the term 'event television.’ "

Greif will exec produce for Thinkfactory, while Hoogstra, Elaine Frontain Bryant and Julian P. Hobbs are set to exec produce for History.

The three-part Hatfields mini broke basic cable ratings records for History in 2012, wrapping its run with 14.3 million total viewers. The mini earned 16 Emmy nominations (including best mini) and took home five, including lead actor for Kevin Costner. Cable networks including History and Discovery have turned to the miniseries as a way to expand into original scripted territory. History has also found success of The Bible, which paired with Hatfield, helped revitalize the mini and "event" series. The success has helped broadcast and cable networks alike lure top-name talent to more limited run fare. For its part, Rising will be a closed-ended eight-episode series, despite its billing by History as an "event" series a la CBS' Under the Dome, the latter of which was renewed for a second season.

The casting brings Paxton back to History after he earned an Emmy nomination for his work in Hatfields. The Big Love alum is repped by UTA and Bloom Hergott.

STORY: Executive Quiz: What's the Difference Between a Miniseries, Limited or Event Series?

For Fraser, the role marks his biggest TV commitment to date and comes more than a year after he exited the starring role in TNT's Howard Gordon drama Legends. He's repped by CAA, Brillstein Entertainment and Felker Toczek.

Liotta is repped by UTA and Untitled; Morgan (Magic City) is with UTA, Precision Entertainment and Bloom Hergott; Jane (61*) is with Paradigm; Martinez is represented by Resolution; Rapaport is with Resolution and Brillstein; and Thieriot is with Gersh and McKuin Frankel. Greif is with Kleinberg Lange.

Here's History's official description of Rising: "In 1836, if west of the Mississippi was considered the Wild West then Texas was hell on earth. Crushed from the outside by Mexican armadas and attacked from within by ferocious Comanche tribes -- no one was safe. But this was a time of bravery, a time to die for what you believed in and a time to stand tall against the cruel rule of the Mexican General Santa Anna. From General Sam Houston, to rag tag Rangers to the legendary 'Yellow Rose of Texas -- this is a story of the human spirit rising in the face of insurmountable odds and claiming a piece of history for all eternity."

'Idiotsitter' Star: I Love Playing 'A Horrible Person'

Idiotsitter Table Still - H 2014Jillian Bell, left and Charlotte Newhouse

Comedy Central recently unleashed its new web series Idiotsitter, which asks the question: How far will one intelligent woman go to pay her bills?

The six-episode series stars co-creators Jillian Bell (Workahlics) and Charlotte Newhouse. Bell plays Gene, a spoiled woman who is living under house arrest in her father's (Stephen Root) mansion. Academic overachiever (but unemployed) Billie (Newhouse) comes on board to look after Gene and tutor her for the GED -- a requirement of her house arrest.

STORY: 'Workaholics' Co-Creator Previews Season 4: Penile Transplants, EDM and Molly

The pair have been writing together since teaming up at the Groundlings. They originally pitched the concept to Comedy Central as a pilot, and tweaked it after it was picked up as a web series -- one of six Comedy Central's digital production studio, CC: Studios, ordered in November.

They shot the entire season in just six days.

"It felt like a week-long Groundlings sketch. It felt very natural," Newhouse tells The Hollywood Reporter.

"We've known each other for about three years now. We wrote one sketch together and we decided we were going to be writing partners for the rest of our lives," adds Bell.

Bell -- whose Workaholics character, Jillian, is incredibly sweet -- relishes the opportunity to play what she calls "a horrible person."

"Both are fun to play," she says, adding that she plays "a not-so-nice person" in the upcoming action comedy 22 Jump Street.

The pair say their are plenty of story possibilities should Idiotsitter get a second season. They are also working on a feature script for MGM.

"We got really lucky with our director [Jeff Tomsic], our cast, and working with Comedy Central,"  says Newhouse. "From makeup to costume, everyone liked doing this and really worked hard."

Idiotsitter debuts new episodes on Wednesdays. Watch them here.
