The New Mutants: Josh Boone still hopeful for film’s potential trilogy

Despite facing a lot of setbacks before its long-awaited theatrical release, director Josh Boone is still very optimistic about the future of The New Mutants, especially after he was given the opportunity to release the intended cut that he wanted for the film without the reshoots that Fox previously ordered. In a recent interview with SFX Magazine (via Comic Book), Boone is hopeful that the studio would allow him to finish his planned trilogy for The New Mutants if ever it becomes a hit at the box office. Originally set to be released on April 3, the film has again been rescheduled to a brand new theatrical release date on August 28, 2020, after over two years since its initial 2018 release.

“Ultimately, after all this time, I was able to make MY New Mutants film, and I am proud of it,” The Fault in Our Stars director said. “What I’m hoping for now is that it will be successful enough so the studio will allow me to complete a trilogy. I’ve got it all planned out.”

The New Mutants adapts the monthly comic book series of the same name that launched in 1982. Created by Chris Claremont and Bob McLeod, The New Mutants follows on a group of teenage mutants as heroes in training in the Marvel Universe. The feature is expected to be a departure from the sci-fi-action spectacle of other X-Men films and is instead being described as a “Stephen King meets John Hughes”-style horror movie.

In November 2017, ComingSoon.net exclusively revealed a leaked concept animatic from the film, which features Wolfsbane, Magic, and Cannonball facing the Demon Bear.
