X-Men ’97 Almost Killed This Fan-Favorite Character, Would’ve Completely Changed Season 2

X-Men ’97 Almost Killed This Fan-Favorite Character, Would’ve Completely Changed Season 2

X-Men ’97 may have changed vastly if Marvel Animation had stuck to its plans of killing a popular mutant earlier than expected. Halfway through season one, X-Men ’97 made the bold choice of killing Gambit, breaking Rogue’s heart. The move set the stage for the season’s second half, with its repercussions still being felt in season 2.

In a new interview with Marvel, X-Men ’97’s supervising producer and director Jake Castorena revealed the team’s original plans. He revealed that the team previously planned to kill Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler, in season one. Instead, the team pivoted to killing Gambit. Fans will find the revelation shocking, even more so following the events of season 2.

Marvel’s New SHIELD Name Change Is a Step Backwards for Nick Fury

“Nightcrawler was supposed to die in Season 1 instead of Gambit,” said Castorena. “And then fast-forward to Season 2, we got Gambit back, [but] we lost Kurt.”

How does Nightcrawler die in X-Men ’97 Season 2?

Those who have watched the second season will know that Kurt does die in its finale. If Marvel Animation had stuck with its original plan, the new season would have looked very different.

In the season 2 finale, Rogue finds the Celestial that turned En Sabah Nur into Apocalypse and offers to give her life to gain the power to defeat the villain and save Gambit. Instead, Nightcrawler offers to sacrifice himself so Rogue can live to meet a reformed Gambit. “My memory will be a seed from which new ones will grow,” says Nightcrawler before giving away his life.

While the second season ends with death and destruction, Marvel has no plans to stop making more seasons. The studio has already greenlit multiple new seasons of X-Men ’97 and has kept the possibility open for resurrecting Nightcrawler.

X-Men ’97 is streaming on Disney+. Marvel Studios is developing a live-action reboot of the X-Men film franchise and will bring back several cast members from the original films in Avengers: Doomsday.

Jason Statham’s Mutiny Gift Goes Hilariously Wrong, But His Son’s Reaction Steals the Show

Jason Statham‘s honest reaction to a Mutiny gift went hilariously wrong on social media. However, his son’s funny reaction is what caught everyone’s eye in the end.

The popular action star recently posted a clip on Instagram regarding a special gift he received from the team for his upcoming movie Mutiny. In the video, the actor revealed, “You’re going to love this one. This one came this morning. And oh yeah, in the way of a gift. A gift. A gift from my favorite people on the other side of the Atlantic.”

However, it turned out to be a hairbrush, and Statham didn’t seem to like it at all. It became clear from his honest, yet slightly hilarious, reaction. “I see this as something far more… far more disturbing. I see this is a little piss take. A Mutiny hairbrush. Just what I need. As you can see, I don’t use one of these that much. Not really that important.” Toward the end of the video, the 59-year-old actor is seen holding the Mutiny-branded hairbrush in frustration.

Jason Statham’s son’s reaction to Mutiny gift

Just when the clip was about to end, Statham’s son, Jack, could be seen peeking into the frame. Making a funny face, the child said, “So I’ll poke it right…” Naturally, the entire exchange made for a hilarious moment between the father and son.

Mutiny will see Statham in the lead role as Cole Reed. The crime thriller’s official synopsis reads, “After witnessing his billionaire boss’s murder and being framed for the crime, Cole Reed boards a cargo ship on a one-man crusade to avenge his boss’ death only to discover an international conspiracy.”

The movie’s cast also includes Annabelle Wallis, Adrian Lester, and Roland Møller. The film is helmed by Jean-François Richet, from a screenplay by Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis.

Lionsgate’s Mutiny hits theaters this Friday, August 21, 2026.

X-Men: Adam Driver’s Mister Sinister Can Fix the MCU’s Jean Grey Problem

The announcement that Adam Driver will play Mister Sinister in X-Men could fix the MCU‘s biggest problems with Jean Grey. The mad scientist is one of the most prominent X-Men villains in the comics, but has yet to appear in any live-action adaptations. However, given his history with the original Marvel Girl, he could be a major gamechanger in several ways.

X-Men: Adam Driver’s Mister Sinister Can Fix the MCU’s Jean Grey Problem

Played by Sadie Sink, Jean Grey was introduced into the MCU in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. She was the mystery villain of the film, who used her psychic powers to stage an attack on the Department of Damage Control. However, this was ultimately revealed to be motivated by the DODC abducting her older sister, Sara, and killing her with their experiments.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day’s Jean Grey Casting Wasn’t Really About the X-Men

Despite this, some MCU fans objected to Jean being painted in a sympathetic light and being allowed to escape. They objected to her manipulating innocent people as part of her agenda. This included making a construction worker walk into traffic and using MJ to distract Spider-Man. However, this apparently out-of-character behavior could take on a new light with the introduction of Mister Sinister.

Mister Sinister opens avenues for Jean Grey in MCU

First seen in 1987’s Uncanny X-Men #213, Mister Sinister was born Nathaniel Essex in 19th century London. A contemporary of Charles Darwin, Dr. Essex was inspired by the new science of genetics. Unfortunately, this inspiration took him down a dark path. He subsequently became obsessed with breeding a perfect race of superhumans.

Oscar Nominee Emerges as Marvel’s Top Pick for Mister Sinister in X-Men – Report

He was aided in his early experiments by the villain Apocalypse, who used the same Celestial technology that empowered him to enhance Dr. Essex. As Mister Sinister, Essex fixated upon Jean Grey as the perfect specimen to create the ultimate Mutant. To that end, he cloned Jean after her death, and arranged for the clone, named Madelyne Pryor, to romance a heartbroken Cyclops.

With Mister Sinister confirmed as the chief villain of the MCU X-Men movie, several possibilities have been opened up for Jean Grey. One intriguing idea is that the Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a clone. This twist would serve two purposes.

Firstly, it would free Jean of responsibility for her apparent crimes. This would allow audiences to sympathize with her more easily. Secondly, it would give the writers of X-Men one less hero whose powers and backstory required explanation. Additionally, unleashing a cloned clone to see what damage it might do is true to Mister Sinister’s methods.

Even without the Jean Grey of Brand New Day being revealed as Madelyne Pryor, Mister Sinister’s inclusion in the MCU X-Men points to big changes. Most of Sinister’s stories in the comics pit him against Jean Grey on some level. This suggests that Marvel Studios is seeking ways to highlight her, without recreating the Dark Phoenix Saga yet again.

Bobby Moynihan Talks Minions & Monsters, Reveals His Dream X-Men Role | Interview

Bobby Moynihan Talks Minions & Monsters, Reveals His Dream X-Men Role Interview

Minions & Monsters star Bobby Moynihan spoke with ComingSoon to celebrate the hit film coming to Digital. The actor discussed his role, being co-stars with George Lucas, and his dream X-Men character. It is now available to rent and own on Digital and will be available in 4K and Blu-ray.

“This is the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created,” says the official synopsis.

Tyler Treese: Bobby, congrats on Minions & Monsters. This movie has such a wonderful creative spirit at its core. For all the Cthulhu and Lovecraft elements, it’s really just about making a movie with your buds, which is a really positive and cool message about creativity. What about that aspect really resonated with you?

Bobby Moynihan: I wasn’t expecting, when I saw it for the first time, to be so affected by the James and Henry relationship. It’s really beautiful, two little boys who just want to make movies together and then find Ed, who’s another little weirdo, and they just all do it together.

I wasn’t expecting to be like, “Oh, that’s gonna be great.” I wish I had that when I was a little boy. It was wonderful and very sweet, and I love Ed with all my heart.

Yeah, there’s a good message of finding your fellow weirdos and being able to create art together.

Your character, Phillips, is a Lovecraftian monster. He’s named after Howard Phillips Lovecraft. What’s your relationship with Lovecraft and Cthulhu? Do you have any interest in that type of stuff?

I like all things nerdy. I get it. I didn’t know all the Lovecraft stuff until essentially I was cast in this and looked it up. But no, that wasn’t my thing. I was in a different universe. I went Star Wars, Batman, and comic books.

Your character is like a giant piranha monster. It’s a really cool design. What did you like most about his look?

Just the idea of a grumpy kaiju. Not terrified, just over it. Also, he’s just in a shell bra and a hula skirt. It doesn’t get better than that.

He dresses how he wants to dress, and he lives his life as a sad little man. I like it.

This film has such a cool cast. George Lucas is in the film, and you famously played George Lucas in an SNL sketch. You just mentioned being into Star Wars. Is it surreal that you’re now castmates with George Lucas?

It is pretty bizarre that I can actually say I was in a movie with George Lucas. Yeah, it’s been a year of those kinds of Mad Lib-y sentences. It’s bizarre. But also, he’s fantastic in it. He’s hilarious.

I was doing some research this morning, and that led me to going on the Despicable Me Wiki. It says that Phillips is the first animal/monster character to speak in the franchise. How does it feel to be making Minions history with this role?

Is that true?

According to the Despicable Me Wiki, it is. I’m not gonna put my journalistic integrity on it…

I wrote it there yesterday morning [laughs]. That’s fantastic. It’s an honor, and I’m gonna tell everyone about that.

You’ve got two kids. Obviously, this helps make you the coolest dad, but how rewarding has it been being in these animated films that your kids can enjoy and sharing that with them, especially when they have these meaningful messages?

Bobby Moynihan: It definitely is. It’s seeing, like looking over and seeing your kid. For this one, it was kind of like seeing them laugh at Buster Keaton and then figuring out who Buster Keaton is or was because of this movie.

It’s crazy to see how things come into their life as opposed to how we got it. That is fun and interesting. Watching Hoppers with my daughter, I was just like, “This is nuts. She’ll have this forever.” It’s crazy.

This film is going to be so interesting for kids to revisit over time because there’s so much love and homage to old Hollywood and the history of film. I can’t wait for people to grow with it and then realize, “Oh, I was laughing at these jokes about silent films when I was small and had no clue about the history that’s all there.”

It’s really nuts. You could also watch this movie with no sound, and it’s just as enjoyable. I mean, the sound is pretty great, but it is a silent movie. It’s pretty crazy.

A lot of your scenes are opposite the great Trey Parker, who voices Goomy. I assume you didn’t get to record together or anything, but what did you like most about playing off his character? They have a fun dynamic where he’s setting everybody up.

I adore him so much. I grew up on all his work. I remember where I was when I watched the first South Park. It’s crazy to be in a movie with him and speaking to him. It’s an honor. He’s the best. But I think when I met him in real life, I essentially acted like I was a fish monster who worked for him. So it was probably the same dynamic.

You mentioned Hoppers. This is two big animated movie hits this year. That’s pretty remarkable. How has it been going back-to-back, with a little break in between, with these two press tours and seeing these films go out into the world? That’s a lot of high-profile films in a short span for you.

It’s been a nice year. It’s great. I realize how lucky I am to be working. It’s very nice. I enjoy it a great deal. I’m just about to start Season 2 of The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, and I can’t believe how lucky I am. I feel very excited about all of it.

It’s so awesome that the show is back for a Season 2 that soon. With streaming, it seems like so many of these shows have such a long break, but this show debuted this year and the second season is going to be back by the end of the year. We never see that happen. How does it feel to be right back and have that quick turnaround where the chemistry is still going to be there?

Bobby Moynihan: It’s the best. I just saw Erika [Alexander] last night, and you’re right. I can’t wait to get back and start doing it again with those guys. I would be happy if they were just like, “We’re just going to shoot 10 seasons. We’re just going to shoot them.” I would be like, “Great.” I wish we could do that.

Bobby, you’ve played in all these massive worlds, from Minions to Adventure Time, Star Wars, and Batman. Is there anything left that’s kind of a holy grail of a franchise you’d like to be involved with someday, as a voice or otherwise?

My dream is to play the Blob in the X-Men universe. That’s all I want. I would love to do live-action Jedi Bob, maybe, in Star Wars, but I’ve already been in that. Yeah, I’ll be Figment. I would like to be Figment from Disney.

What is it about the Blob that’s really fun for you?

I’ve just always loved that comic book character, and I really want to put that costume on and do it. I want to play a weird villain.

I’d love to see it. Let’s put that out into the world. Fingers crossed. Let’s get that out there.

All the X-Men they’re casting now are very young, and I’m clearly not a day over 23.

I feel like we can get a little older for the Blob.

Thanks to Bobby Moynihan for taking the time to talk about Minions & Monsters.

Tangled Gets New Song Not in the Original Movie Ahead of Live-Action Remake, Listen Here

Tangled

Alan Menken gave D23 attendees an early preview of a new song from Disney’s upcoming Tangled stage musical. The song was not part of the 2010 animated movie.

The Oscar-winning composer performed the work-in-progress track on piano during D23 2026. Floating lantern visuals appeared on the screen behind him, creating a clear connection to the beloved Disney story.

Menken composed the music for the original Tangled. He is now working on the stage musical and contributing to the live-action remake. However, the new song he previewed at D23 was written for the stage production. Disney has not said whether the song will also be used in the movie.

An X post shared a video from the D23 performance and wrote, “Alan Menken performs a brand new song he’s writing for Tangled. #D23”

What do we know about Tangled so far?

Disney’s live-action Tangled is currently filming abroad. The movie stars Teagan Croft as Rapunzel and Milo Manheim as Flynn Rider. Kathryn Hahn plays Mother Gothel, while Diego Luna portrays a new character named Hawthorne.

CaitrĂona Balfe has joined the cast as Queen Arianna, Rapunzel’s mother. Elliot Cowan plays King Frederic, while Patrick and Hugo McPherson portray the Stabbington brothers. Michael Gracey directs the film from a script by Jennifer Kaytin Robinson and Michael Montemayor.

The studio recently showed its first footage at D23, including a look at Hahn as Mother Gothel. Rapunzel also appeared in her signature long blonde hair. Croft and Manheim could not attend the event because they were filming in Spain, but they sent a message to fans from the set.

The remake will retell the animated film’s core story. That story follows Rapunzel after she leaves her tower with Flynn Rider. Disney has scheduled the movie for theatrical release on March 31, 2028.

Meanwhile, the original Tangled (which was released in 2010) became a major part of Disney’s modern animated lineup. Menken created its music with lyricist Glenn Slater, including songs such as “I See the Light” and “I’ve Got a Dream.” “I See the Light” later won the Grammy Award for Best Song Written for Visual Media.

The latest live-action DC Universe series, Lanterns, premieres on HBO and Max today, Sunday, August 16, 2026, bringing a new Green Lantern story to the screen. The eight-episode series stars Kyle Chandler as Lantern legend Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as rookie John Stewart. The story follows the two outer space cops as they investigate a mysterious murder in rural Nebraska.

Created by Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King, the story will focus on the consequences Jordan and Stewart will face as they uncover the conspiracy and search for the Manhunters, a type of aliens who can shapeshift and look like anyone.

The cast of the show also includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Laura Linney, and more. The finale of Lanterns will be released on Sunday, October 4, 2026.

What will be the next DC Universe project after Lanterns?

Lanterns is an important addition to the DC Universe as it introduces John Stewart, who is expected to appear in other DCU projects beyond the series. Stewart is one of DC’s most famous Green Lanterns, and Aaron Pierre is playing him in live action for the first time.

It also includes Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner and Ulrich Thomsen as Sinestro, connecting it to the larger DCU.

Following Lanterns, Clayface will be DC Studios’ next major release, which is set to be released worldwide in theaters on October 23, 2026. Directed by James Watkins, the film stars Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen/Clayface, along with Naomi Ackie, Max Minghella, and Eddie Marsan.

After Clayface, the DCU’s next major film is Man of Tomorrow, which is scheduled to be released in theaters worldwide on July 9, 2027. This time, Superman (David Corenswet) will be joining forces with his enemy Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult). It is not a traditional sequel to Superman, but it will include many returning characters.

Apart from these, the DCU has a long lineup of projects, which includes The Batman: Part II, Creature Commandos season 2, Waller, and more.

Lanterns Reviews All Agree This Is the Best Part of the DCU Green Lantern TV Show

Lanterns’ early reviews have surfaced online, and they all agree on the one shining aspect of the new DCU TV show. A lot of them believe that the best part of the DCU TV show is the chemistry between Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, and John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre.

Being in awe of Chandler and Stewart’s on-screen bonding, Mike Ryan of The Hard Press wrote, “they needed their own story. And it’s kind of remarkable we are finally getting this.”

Similarly, Bradley Russell of GamesRadar+ wrote that the show “prides itself on relentless pacing and masterful character work from Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart to ensure DC’s superhero rivals will turn green with envy.”

Daniel Fienberg of The Hollywood Reporter also highlighted the amazing chemistry between Hal and John and wrote, “Even in its uneven moments, the stars shine.” Meanwhile, Lauren Sarner of The New York Post wrote that the show is “an enjoyable — if uneven — watch, with barn-burner performances from the two stars, especially Chandler.”

Zach Pope of Zach Pope Reviews admired the new DC TV show and even called it “the BEST thing DC has done since THE BATMAN… it’s my favorite series of 2026.”

Who else stars in Lanterns besides Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre?

The cast of Lanterns also includes Kelly Macdonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Jason Ritter, and Ulrich Thomsen. Nathan Fillion comes back to reprise his role as fellow Green Lantern Guy Gardner.

Earlier this year, it was confirmed that Emmy-winning actress Laura Linney had also joined the show. Although her casting was initially reported last year, it wasn’t made official until May 2026. Linney is known for her work in projects including 2025’s The American Revolution, MGM+ series American Classic, and 2024’s coming-of-age drama Suncoast.

As for the show’s plot, it will be a murder mystery. Going by the official logline, it follows “new recruit John Stewart and Lantern legend Hal Jordan, two intergalactic cops drawn into a dark, earth-based mystery as they investigate a murder in the American heartland.”

Lanterns has Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof, and Tom King as the co-creators, co-writers, and also executive producers alongside James Hawes.

Lanterns TV show will have its premiere on August 16, 2026, on HBO.

New Star Wars Game Took Inspiration From a Surprising AMC TV Show

Star Wars Zero Company drew unexpected inspiration from an AMC show, helping Bit Reactor build a Clone Wars story with original heroes. The upcoming turn-based tactics game was announced by EA last year and will be released later this month.

In an interview with Variety, Greg Foertsch, head of Bit Reactor, revealed the game was inspired by the AMC series Turn: Washington’s Spies. “Much like that show ‘Turn,’ where it’s surrounded by the Revolutionary War, there’s this thing happening inside of it, and you’ve got Cornwallis, and you’ve got Benedict Arnold, and you’ve got Washington, and they all pepper you from outside this orbit,” said Foertsch.

“So you’re familiar with this stuff. You’ve heard all those names. You know what’s happening in the Revolutionary War. But then there’s the story happening with these characters that I’ve grown accustomed to, care about, and their relationships. And so that’s probably the biggest similarity to our approach to this.”

Turn: Washington’s Spies debuted on AMC in 2014 and ran for four seasons. The period drama followed a group of spies known as the Culper Ring that played a major role in the American Revolutionary War. The series was based on Alexander Rose’s 2007 book Washington’s Spies: The Story of America’s First Spy Ring.

How the Clone Wars setting gave Zero Company more freedom

Foertsch explained that the Clone Wars era gave Bit Reactor the flexibility to incorporate legacy Star Wars characters. However, the development team wanted to create an original story set during wartime that is canonical to the franchise. Despite that, players will still have plenty of freedom to shape their experience. For starters, players can fully customize Officer Hawks, who leads the titular team.

“But it gave us a lot of freedom, frankly, to introduce the things we wanted to introduce mechanically, that also marry up super well with what’s going on in the canon,” Foertsch explained.

The Clone Wars has been one of the most used settings in Star Wars media outside of the films. It was the subject of the eponymous animated series, Star Wars: Republic Commando, and elements of the Battlefront games. Zero Company will be the first turn-based squad tactics game in the franchise with gameplay familiar to XCOM players.

Star Wars Zero Company releases on PC, PS5, and XBOX Series X|S on August 27, 2026.

Peacock has released the official trailer for Season 2 of The Paper. The popular sitcom is a spin-off of the American mockumentary series The Office. Its sophomore season returns with the eccentric employees of the Toledo Truth Teller facing new challenges.

Season 2 of The Paper premieres on Peacock on September 9, 2026. The upcoming season is expected to feature 10 episodes. As with the previous season, all episodes will be released at once for fans to binge.

Check out The Paper Season 2 trailer below (watch more trailers):

What happens in The Paper Season 2 trailer?

The trailer offers a sneak peek at the wacky shenanigans the Toledo Truth Teller employees will get into this season. It features a montage of several comedic scenes that the series has in store.

Season 2 will follow Ned’s search for a new journalistic crusade after winning the Ohio Journalism Awards. His latest investigation targets a local private club, which puts the newspaper at risk. Meanwhile, Ned and Mare navigate their growing attraction to each other, while Esmeralda struggles to find her place on the team.

One scene from the trailer shows Ned and Mare sneaking out to kiss. “I have started a relationship with someone who works beneath me,” Ned reflects. Another sequence captures a team meeting where Marv, the CEO of Enervate, tells them, “I want you to write the best article you’ve ever written.” The season will see the crew’s growth as reporters as they face new challenges.

The Paper stars Domhnall Gleeson as Ned, Sabrina Impacciatore as Esmeralda, Chelsea Frei as Mare, Melvin Gregg as Detrick, Gbemisola Ikumelo as Adelola, and more. Oscar Nuñez reprises his role as Oscar Martinez from The Office.

Created by Greg Daniels and Michael Koman, who also serve as executive producers. Creators of the original British version of The Office, Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, also executive produce alongside Howard Klein, Ben Silverman, and Banijay Americas.

Popular Prime Video TV Show Gets Great Season 3 Update Before Season 2 Even Premieres

Following its massive success, it seems like Prime Video is starting work on Off Campus Season 3 early to keep the momentum going. The series debuted earlier this year on the streaming service, becoming one of its biggest hits and surpassing The Boys. Prime Video renewed the series for a second season shortly before the first season even released.

According to a report from The Insneider’s Jeff Sneider, season 3 of Off Campus is currently being developed at Prime Video. The report claims that the studio has started hiring writers to start work on season 3, although it hasn’t been officially greenlit. Prime Video reportedly will wait on season 2’s reception before making that decision, but having written material ready could help make the wait between seasons feel shorter.

What do we know about Off Campus Season 3 so far?

Off Campus season 2 will largely adapt The Score, which is the third book in Elle Kennedy’s franchise. The season will focus on Dean and Allie’s relationship. That leaves season 3 to adapt elements from the remaining three books, those being The Mistake, The Goal, and The Legacy.

The Mistake focuses on the relationship between John Logan and Grace Ivers, with the latter being played by India Fowler in season 2. The Goal follows Tucker and Sabrina James’ relationship, and The Legacy follows the lives of all the couples following their graduation. It’s unclear what direction Prime Video will take with the series in a potential season 3.

According to Amazon, via Variety, the show pulled in 36 million viewers during its first 12 days of streaming. It became the third most-watched series debut on Prime Video. The second season entered production earlier in June, with fans expecting it to arrive on Prime Video early next year. Prime Video has not officially announced the release date for Off Campus season 2.

All episodes of Off Campus season 1 can be streamed on Prime Video.
