In Days of Thunder 2, Tom Cruise must figure out a way to reinvent nostalgia. Otherwise, he risks ruining his legacy.
Cruise is returning to the racetrack to star in Days of Thunder 2, Paramount‘s sequel to 1990’s Days of Thunder. Cruise will reprise his role as Cole Trickle, the hotshot Nascar driver who won the Daytona 500 in the first movie.
On Cruise’s social media, the actor revealed that Anne Hathaway will star in Days of Thunder 2. Hathaway is expected to play an engineer and team owner in the sequel. Days of Thunder 2 will be filmed for Imax and other premium large-screen formats, including Dolby and 4DX.
Days of Thunder 2 races into theaters on June 2, 2028. Jonathan Levine has been tapped to direct for Paramount.
Cruise has a history of resurrecting characters from his past for sequels. The 64-year-old has played Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise since 1996. However, the more relevant example of Cruise resurrecting an old character for a sequel is Top Gun: Maverick.
Cruise can make Days of Thunder 2 like Top Gun: Maverick, but it must learn from the lessons of a successful sequel or risk tarnishing the original’s legacy.
Days of Thunder 2 can follow Top Gun: Maverick blueprint without becoming a nostalgia trip
There is nothing wrong with nostalgia. Cruise has built a career around longing for characters of the past. Audiences love when Cruise plays Ethan Hunt and Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Add Cole Trickle to the list. Cruise should absolutely leverage the past to build his future if that’s what audiences want.
However, legacy sequels do not have a strong track record of working. Top Gun: Maverick is one of the shining examples of how to properly make a legacy sequel. The key is to honor the past while advancing the future. Top Gun: Maverick included many nods to the original movie, including the beach scenes, infectious music, and the honoring of Iceman.
More importantly, the sequel added new storylines, developed strong characters, and capitalized on strong technical advancements. The result worked as Top Gun: Maverick became the highest-grossing movie of Cruise’s career.
Days of Thunder 2 must follow the Top Gun: Maverick blueprint. The sequel can capture Cole’s cockiness and the invigorating racing scenes. It may also include a moment to reflect on Robert Duvall, who played Harry Hogge, Cole’s crew chief in the first movie. Duvall died earlier this year.
However, Days of Thunder 2 must craft a fresh story inside this legacy IP. It’s the only way audiences will respond positively to it. Give audiences something they’ve never seen before while highlighting the original’s style and spirit. If that doesn’t happen, the original’s legacy and Cruise’s career will suffer.
Cruise figured out a legacy sequel once before. He should learn from its lessons before returning to the racetrack.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is about to make box office history that even James Cameron couldn’t stop. The Sony/Marvel blockbuster stands on the verge of overtaking one of Cameron’s biggest films on two all-time records.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day to become the third biggest movie at box office
Sony/Marvel Studios’ Spider-Man: Brand New Day sits less than $10 million away from $900 million domestically, according to Deadline. The film earned $22.2 million in its fifth weekend, bringing its running domestic total to $891.5 million. It currently ranks fourth on the all-time worldwide box office chart with $2.33 billion globally.
The superhero sequel needs approximately $45 million more domestically to surpass Avatar: The Way of Water’s $688 million and claim third place on the all-time worldwide grosses list. Avatar: The Way of Water holds the number three spot with $2.33 billion worldwide, putting the two films roughly $2 million apart. Ne Zha 2 sits at number five with $2.27 billion, while Titanic holds sixth place at $2.26 billion.
Brand New Day already stands as the highest-grossing Spider-Man film ever, surpassing Spider-Man: No Way Home’s $1.92 billion worldwide. The film’s domestic total currently runs 5% ahead of Star Wars: The Force Awakens at the same point in its release, per Deadline. That 2015 film finished its domestic run at $936.6 million and remains the only title to cross the $900 million domestic milestone.
The film opened to $360 million domestically across 4,487 theaters on July 31. It has maintained the number one domestic position for five consecutive weekends. The fifth-weekend hold of $22.2 million represents a 43% drop from the previous frame.
Brand New Day also generates 38.2% of its worldwide gross domestically and 61.8% internationally. The international total stands at $1.44 billion. Only Avatar, Avengers: Endgame, and Avatar: The Way of Water rank higher on the all-time worldwide chart.

Fall, the 2022 survival horror movie starring Virginia Gardner and Grace Caroline Currey, is now available to stream for free ahead of the upcoming sequel. The new movie, titled Fall 2: Deadpoint, is scheduled to arrive in theaters next week.
Directed by Scott Mann, Fall is about two best friends who decide it’d be a fun idea to climb a 2,000-foot-tall television broadcasting tower. Upon arriving at the top of the structure, however, the two of them become stranded and have no way to get down. The rest of the movie is then about them trying to safely find a way back to the ground before dehydration, vultures, or other threats kill them.
While not a record-breaking hit at the box office, Fall brought in around $21 million at the box office off a modest $3 million budget. It received positive reviews from critics and movie-goers alike, as it has a 79 percent score on both the Tomatometer and Popcornmeter on Rotten Tomatoes.
Directed by Peter and Michael Spierig, Fall 2: Deadpoint stars Harriet Slater, Arsema Thomas, Tom Brittney, and Grace Caroline Currey. Rather than a broadcasting tower, the sequel sees the main characters become stuck on a dangerous mountain plank walk.
The official synopsis reads, “On a perilous climb across Thailand’s Mount Kwan, two climbers become trapped thousands of feet above the ground, where vertigo-inducing heights, sheer exposure, and impossible odds turn every moment into a fight for survival. Lionsgate and Capstone Studios present, Grindstone Entertainment Group presents, a Tea Shop and Capstone Studios production, a Flawless production, in association with Cousin Jones.”
Fall 2: Deadpoint will be released in the United States on September 2, 2026, by Lionsgate.

The title will feature licensed vehicles, including K.I.T.T. from Knight Rider and the Time Machine from Back to the Future, alongside a roster of muscle cars, supercars, and motorcycles.

The new Breeder trailer featuring Gen V’s Maddie Phillips was released on August 26, 2026. The preview of the upcoming horror film delves into how a seemingly peaceful poodle ranch turns into a terrifying nightmare for the characters.
The trailer for Breeder opens with Russell, played by Daniel Doheny, lying on the floor. Dot-Marie Jones, who portrays a strange and creepy poodle breeder, Patti, then introduces him to the girls as she states, “Russell, I’d like you to meet my daughters.” As Russell joins them at the table, Maddie Philips, who plays the role of Ainsley, then says to him, “We’re not a cult, I swear.”
The 2-minute 8-second trailer then slowly unravels how Russell has actually been trapped by Patti for a different purpose. Dot-Marie Jones’ character reveals that she is moving from dog breeding to human breeding. She further says to Russell that he is the right stud for her project of breeding people. The trailer soon heightens the horror with disturbing visuals. An eerie background score further adds to the unsettling atmosphere.
Breeder follows a college student who discovers a sinister catch behind a research offer
The narrative of the film explores how a strange dog breeder tricks Russell, who is a broke college student, into coming to her isolated ranch. It doesn’t take long for Russell to discover the frightening secrets she has been hiding.
The synopsis of the film reads, “An eccentric poodle breeder lures a broke college student to her remote ranch with a promise of research funding. But, as he soon learns, there’s a catch.”
The 97-minute film has been written and directed by Alex Goyette. Alongside Daniel Doheny, Dot-Marie Jones, and Maddie Phillips, the cast also features Tanaya Beatty, Carmen Moore, Paige McGarvin, Lillian Doucet-Roche, Rochelle Greenwood, Charlotte Kavanagh, Jen Araki-Playfair, and others.
“Independent Film Company and Shudder have always been a dream home for us. We’re thrilled to partner with them to bring Breeder to audiences following its world premiere at Tribeca. As conversations around eugenics continue to resurface, our film confronts those ideas through the eyes of a deranged poodle breeder,” said Goyette, reflecting on the upcoming film, per Variety.
Breeder is scheduled to hit the theaters on October 16, 2026.
VisionQuest is taking Paul Bettany‘s MCU journey in a new direction. Created by Terry Matalas, the upcoming Marvel show serves as the conclusion to the trilogy that began with WandaVision in 2021.
Paul Bettany will reprise his role as White Vision in the upcoming television miniseries. The series will explore the character’s past and how it influenced his identity. Furthermore, the show will also hint at what the character’s future may look like in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Matales told Empire, “This is the first time where we get to watch Vision drive the narrative, and understand who he is, who he thinks he was.” Revealing more about the narrative of the upcoming series, the showrunner added, “We watch this character go through an identity crisis. It’s kind of the Vision movie, if you will. He is attempting to move about in the world in a small way, and then at night download this data and discuss the things that have happened to him with these different AIs, who have different characteristics and help him understand different qualities and skills.”
The showrunner further added, “But he is also very much using it as an excuse to keep the world and himself at arm’s length. And of course, events conspire to drag him actually into the world.”
Everything we know about Marvel’s VisionQuest so far
The upcoming Marvel Television miniseries is the second spinoff of WandaVision. While Bettany will be back as Vision, James Spader will reprise his role as Ultron in the series.
Thanos killed Vision to capture the Mind Stone in Avengers: Infinity War. However, during the events of WandaVision, Wanda Maximoff created a version of him inside the fake reality of Westview. Meanwhile, S.W.O.R.D. rebuilt the synthezoid’s original body and turned his body color to white. Later, White Vision regained his identity and memories after the encounter with Wanda’s fake Vision.
The logline of VisionQuest, per IMDb, reads, “Vision is faced with many challenges while trying to regain his memory and humanity.”
The series will also see Orla Brady as F.R.I.D.A.Y., Henry Lewis as D.U.M.-E, Jonathan Sayer as U, Emily Hampshire as E.D.I.T.H., and James D’Arcy as J.A.R.V.I.S. Other ensemble members include Diane Morgan, Ruaridh Mollica, T’Nia Miller, Lauren Morais, Todd Stashwick, and more.
The upcoming Marvel show is the 18th television series in the MCU. Matalas is also directing the miniseries alongside Christopher J. Byrne, Gandja Monteiro, and Vincenzo Natali.
VisionQuest was announced in October 2022 and is scheduled to release four years later on October 14, 2026.
DCU’s superhero TV series Lanterns might debut a major character from the Justice League. The DC fans seem quite hyped about it. The series is directed by James Hawes and has been making quite a buzz.
Following the conclusion of ‘Trust Fall,’ the second episode, the audience is divided over whether Martian Manhunter will make its debut. Fans also theorized that J’onn J’onnz might finally be coming to the DCU. @OptimusGrind stated, “Manhunters??? As in Martian Manhunter??? J’onn J’onzz???? #Lanterns.”
Another, @natheng98 promptly corrected the notion, saying, “That’s “martian manhunter”….man hunters are different.” @NewTSage wrote, “The only part about this Manhunter stuff that’s throwing me off that they sound like Martians the way people keep describing what they can do. #Lanterns” @BartonBella1 quipped, “People acting like the manhunters and Martian manhunter are the same thing is pi**ing me off #Lanterns.”
For context, the Manhunters are quite different from The Martian Manhunter. They are a fictional group of extraterrestrial robots who are part of a police force. These interstellar beings are tasked with thwarting dangers and fighting evil threats from across the cosmos.
Lanterns introduces the Manhunters as the Green Lantern mystery expands
The second episode of Lanterns gave fans a lot to process. This is the very first time fans have seen Kyle Chandler’s Hal Jordan donning the Green Lantern suit and the chemistry between Chandler and Aaron Pierre’s character.
The biggest reveal, however, was the introduction of the Manhunters. Following their investigation into a high school shooting during a football game, the duo found out how an alien scout team was trying to locate a Manhunter who reportedly ‘engineered a holocaust’ over their home planet.
Meanwhile, Hal and his partner face a huge problem. The said Manhunter must be located and handed over to the aliens within a couple of days. If not done, the aliens threaten to terrorize Rushville by coming into the locality and blowing themselves up, causing significant damage to life and property within the town.

X-Men ’97 may have changed vastly if Marvel Animation had stuck to its plans of killing a popular mutant earlier than expected. Halfway through season one, X-Men ’97 made the bold choice of killing Gambit, breaking Rogue’s heart. The move set the stage for the season’s second half, with its repercussions still being felt in season 2.
In a new interview with Marvel, X-Men ’97’s supervising producer and director Jake Castorena revealed the team’s original plans. He revealed that the team previously planned to kill Kurt Wagner, aka Nightcrawler, in season one. Instead, the team pivoted to killing Gambit. Fans will find the revelation shocking, even more so following the events of season 2.
“Nightcrawler was supposed to die in Season 1 instead of Gambit,” said Castorena. “And then fast-forward to Season 2, we got Gambit back, [but] we lost Kurt.”
How does Nightcrawler die in X-Men ’97 Season 2?
Those who have watched the second season will know that Kurt does die in its finale. If Marvel Animation had stuck with its original plan, the new season would have looked very different.
In the season 2 finale, Rogue finds the Celestial that turned En Sabah Nur into Apocalypse and offers to give her life to gain the power to defeat the villain and save Gambit. Instead, Nightcrawler offers to sacrifice himself so Rogue can live to meet a reformed Gambit. “My memory will be a seed from which new ones will grow,” says Nightcrawler before giving away his life.
While the second season ends with death and destruction, Marvel has no plans to stop making more seasons. The studio has already greenlit multiple new seasons of X-Men ’97 and has kept the possibility open for resurrecting Nightcrawler.
X-Men ’97 is streaming on Disney+. Marvel Studios is developing a live-action reboot of the X-Men film franchise and will bring back several cast members from the original films in Avengers: Doomsday.

Jason Statham‘s honest reaction to a Mutiny gift went hilariously wrong on social media. However, his son’s funny reaction is what caught everyone’s eye in the end.
The popular action star recently posted a clip on Instagram regarding a special gift he received from the team for his upcoming movie Mutiny. In the video, the actor revealed, “You’re going to love this one. This one came this morning. And oh yeah, in the way of a gift. A gift. A gift from my favorite people on the other side of the Atlantic.”
However, it turned out to be a hairbrush, and Statham didn’t seem to like it at all. It became clear from his honest, yet slightly hilarious, reaction. “I see this as something far more… far more disturbing. I see this is a little piss take. A Mutiny hairbrush. Just what I need. As you can see, I don’t use one of these that much. Not really that important.” Toward the end of the video, the 59-year-old actor is seen holding the Mutiny-branded hairbrush in frustration.
Just when the clip was about to end, Statham’s son, Jack, could be seen peeking into the frame. Making a funny face, the child said, “So I’ll poke it right…” Naturally, the entire exchange made for a hilarious moment between the father and son.
Mutiny will see Statham in the lead role as Cole Reed. The crime thriller’s official synopsis reads, “After witnessing his billionaire boss’s murder and being framed for the crime, Cole Reed boards a cargo ship on a one-man crusade to avenge his boss’ death only to discover an international conspiracy.”
The movie’s cast also includes Annabelle Wallis, Adrian Lester, and Roland Møller. The film is helmed by Jean-François Richet, from a screenplay by Lindsay Michel and J.P. Davis.
Lionsgate’s Mutiny hits theaters this Friday, August 21, 2026.
The announcement that Adam Driverwill play Mister Sinister in X-Men could fix theMCU‘s biggest problems with Jean Grey. The mad scientist is one of the most prominent X-Men villains in the comics, but has yet to appear in any live-action adaptations. However, given his history with the original Marvel Girl, he could be a major gamechanger in several ways.
Played by Sadie Sink, Jean Grey was introduced into the MCU in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. She was the mystery villain of the film, who used her psychic powers to stage an attack on the Department of Damage Control. However, this was ultimately revealed to be motivated by the DODC abducting her older sister, Sara, and killing her with their experiments.
Despite this, some MCU fans objected to Jean being painted in a sympathetic light and being allowed to escape. They objected to her manipulating innocent people as part of her agenda. This included making a construction worker walk into traffic and using MJ to distract Spider-Man. However, this apparently out-of-character behavior could take on a new light with the introduction of Mister Sinister.
Mister Sinister opens avenues for Jean Grey in MCU
First seen in 1987’s Uncanny X-Men #213, Mister Sinister was born Nathaniel Essex in 19th century London. A contemporary of Charles Darwin, Dr. Essex was inspired by the new science of genetics. Unfortunately, this inspiration took him down a dark path. He subsequently became obsessed with breeding a perfect race of superhumans.
He was aided in his early experiments by the villain Apocalypse, who used the same Celestial technology that empowered him to enhance Dr. Essex. As Mister Sinister, Essex fixated upon Jean Grey as the perfect specimen to create the ultimate Mutant. To that end, he cloned Jean after her death, and arranged for the clone, named Madelyne Pryor, to romance a heartbroken Cyclops.
With Mister Sinister confirmed as the chief villain of the MCU X-Men movie, several possibilities have been opened up for Jean Grey. One intriguing idea is that the Jean Grey in Spider-Man: Brand New Day is a clone. This twist would serve two purposes.
Firstly, it would free Jean of responsibility for her apparent crimes. This would allow audiences to sympathize with her more easily. Secondly, it would give the writers of X-Men one less hero whose powers and backstory required explanation. Additionally, unleashing a cloned clone to see what damage it might do is true to Mister Sinister’s methods.
Even without the Jean Grey of Brand New Day being revealed as Madelyne Pryor, Mister Sinister’s inclusion in the MCU X-Men points to big changes. Most of Sinister’s stories in the comics pit him against Jean Grey on some level. This suggests that Marvel Studios is seeking ways to highlight her, without recreating the Dark Phoenix Saga yet again.
Minions & Monsters star Bobby Moynihan spoke with ComingSoon to celebrate the hit film coming to Digital. The actor discussed his role, being co-stars with George Lucas, and his dream X-Men character. It is now available to rent and own on Digital and will be available in 4K and Blu-ray.
“This is the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created,” says the official synopsis.
Tyler Treese: Bobby, congrats on Minions & Monsters. This movie has such a wonderful creative spirit at its core. For all the Cthulhu and Lovecraft elements, it’s really just about making a movie with your buds, which is a really positive and cool message about creativity. What about that aspect really resonated with you?
Bobby Moynihan: I wasn’t expecting, when I saw it for the first time, to be so affected by the James and Henry relationship. It’s really beautiful, two little boys who just want to make movies together and then find Ed, who’s another little weirdo, and they just all do it together.
I wasn’t expecting to be like, “Oh, that’s gonna be great.” I wish I had that when I was a little boy. It was wonderful and very sweet, and I love Ed with all my heart.
Yeah, there’s a good message of finding your fellow weirdos and being able to create art together.
Your character, Phillips, is a Lovecraftian monster. He’s named after Howard Phillips Lovecraft. What’s your relationship with Lovecraft and Cthulhu? Do you have any interest in that type of stuff?
I like all things nerdy. I get it. I didn’t know all the Lovecraft stuff until essentially I was cast in this and looked it up. But no, that wasn’t my thing. I was in a different universe. I went Star Wars, Batman, and comic books.
Your character is like a giant piranha monster. It’s a really cool design. What did you like most about his look?
Just the idea of a grumpy kaiju. Not terrified, just over it. Also, he’s just in a shell bra and a hula skirt. It doesn’t get better than that.
He dresses how he wants to dress, and he lives his life as a sad little man. I like it.
This film has such a cool cast. George Lucas is in the film, and you famously played George Lucas in an SNL sketch. You just mentioned being into Star Wars. Is it surreal that you’re now castmates with George Lucas?
It is pretty bizarre that I can actually say I was in a movie with George Lucas. Yeah, it’s been a year of those kinds of Mad Lib-y sentences. It’s bizarre. But also, he’s fantastic in it. He’s hilarious.
I was doing some research this morning, and that led me to going on the Despicable Me Wiki. It says that Phillips is the first animal/monster character to speak in the franchise. How does it feel to be making Minions history with this role?
Is that true?
According to the Despicable Me Wiki, it is. I’m not gonna put my journalistic integrity on it…
I wrote it there yesterday morning [laughs]. That’s fantastic. It’s an honor, and I’m gonna tell everyone about that.
You’ve got two kids. Obviously, this helps make you the coolest dad, but how rewarding has it been being in these animated films that your kids can enjoy and sharing that with them, especially when they have these meaningful messages?
Bobby Moynihan: It definitely is. It’s seeing, like looking over and seeing your kid. For this one, it was kind of like seeing them laugh at Buster Keaton and then figuring out who Buster Keaton is or was because of this movie.
It’s crazy to see how things come into their life as opposed to how we got it. That is fun and interesting. Watching Hoppers with my daughter, I was just like, “This is nuts. She’ll have this forever.” It’s crazy.
This film is going to be so interesting for kids to revisit over time because there’s so much love and homage to old Hollywood and the history of film. I can’t wait for people to grow with it and then realize, “Oh, I was laughing at these jokes about silent films when I was small and had no clue about the history that’s all there.”
It’s really nuts. You could also watch this movie with no sound, and it’s just as enjoyable. I mean, the sound is pretty great, but it is a silent movie. It’s pretty crazy.
A lot of your scenes are opposite the great Trey Parker, who voices Goomy. I assume you didn’t get to record together or anything, but what did you like most about playing off his character? They have a fun dynamic where he’s setting everybody up.
I adore him so much. I grew up on all his work. I remember where I was when I watched the first South Park. It’s crazy to be in a movie with him and speaking to him. It’s an honor. He’s the best. But I think when I met him in real life, I essentially acted like I was a fish monster who worked for him. So it was probably the same dynamic.
You mentioned Hoppers. This is two big animated movie hits this year. That’s pretty remarkable. How has it been going back-to-back, with a little break in between, with these two press tours and seeing these films go out into the world? That’s a lot of high-profile films in a short span for you.
It’s been a nice year. It’s great. I realize how lucky I am to be working. It’s very nice. I enjoy it a great deal. I’m just about to start Season 2 of The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins, and I can’t believe how lucky I am. I feel very excited about all of it.
It’s so awesome that the show is back for a Season 2 that soon. With streaming, it seems like so many of these shows have such a long break, but this show debuted this year and the second season is going to be back by the end of the year. We never see that happen. How does it feel to be right back and have that quick turnaround where the chemistry is still going to be there?
Bobby Moynihan: It’s the best. I just saw Erika [Alexander] last night, and you’re right. I can’t wait to get back and start doing it again with those guys. I would be happy if they were just like, “We’re just going to shoot 10 seasons. We’re just going to shoot them.” I would be like, “Great.” I wish we could do that.
Bobby, you’ve played in all these massive worlds, from Minions to Adventure Time, Star Wars, and Batman. Is there anything left that’s kind of a holy grail of a franchise you’d like to be involved with someday, as a voice or otherwise?
My dream is to play the Blob in the X-Men universe. That’s all I want. I would love to do live-action Jedi Bob, maybe, in Star Wars, but I’ve already been in that. Yeah, I’ll be Figment. I would like to be Figment from Disney.
What is it about the Blob that’s really fun for you?
I’ve just always loved that comic book character, and I really want to put that costume on and do it. I want to play a weird villain.
I’d love to see it. Let’s put that out into the world. Fingers crossed. Let’s get that out there.
All the X-Men they’re casting now are very young, and I’m clearly not a day over 23.
I feel like we can get a little older for the Blob.
Thanks to Bobby Moynihan for taking the time to talk about Minions & Monsters.
