Box Office: Tenet Leads Quiet Box Office

Christopher Nolan’s Tenet continues to lead the box office, albeit in quiet fashion. The time travel thriller, now currently playing in 2,910 locations, collected $6.7M over the weekend, which was down nearly 30% from last weekend’s $9.4 million debut and brings its domestic total to $29.5M. Worldwide, the pic has amassed $200M.

As reported by Deadline, word-of-mouth improved over the weekend as audiences graded the film an 80% in Comscore/Screen Engine PostTrak exits with 65% offering a definite recommend. The success of the film, which many have speculated will need to hit roughly $400 million just to break even, relies on repeat viewings and positive word of mouth. So, that’s good news.

In terms of Imax grosses, Tenet dipped 35% from last weekend and hauled $725k from 290 locations for a running total of $3.8M.

Coming in second was 20th/Disney’s The New Mutants with $2.1M bringing its total to a tepid $15.3M, while Russell Crowe’s Unhinged racked up another $1.5M for a $13.8M total.

The other new release this weekend, Sony’s The Broken Hearts Gallery, collected $1.13M. The Natalie Krinsky pic reportedly cost $8M to produce.

Bill & Ted Face the Music brought in another $260K from 807 theaters for a $2.8M total.

Elsewhere, Disney’s Mulan, which carries a $200M price tag, failed to make much noise overseas where it has only grossed $37.6M total. The pic opened to just $23.2M in China in the wake of the #BoycottMulan movement. Grosses from its Disney+ release have not been revealed.
