Konami has plenty of classic franchises that don’t get much use nowadays, outside of the occasional re-release. But a new report states that the publisher is getting back into proper game development through a slew of remasters, remakes, and new installments of its franchises like Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania, and Silent Hill.
VideoGamesChronicle is behind the report where its sources talked about some details related to these revivals. The Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake is one of the big projects coming one day in the future, which is something Eurogamer independently corroborated. Virtuos is said to be the team developing the remake of the 2004 game, which was coincidentally the same year the studio was founded. Virtuos is mainly known for port work or supplemental development as it has helped out on games like Horizon Zero Dawn, The Last of Us: Remastered, Battlefield V, and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4, just to name a few.

Apparently, this remake has been considered for a long time and early talks had it using the Fox Engine from Metal Gear Solid V but Konami has since canned that specific form of the idea and moved on from the engine. In 2016, fans salivated over the Pachinko machine that updated Metal Gear Solid 3‘s scenes for the modern day which gave players an early idea of what this could have been.
While this is the biggest part of the Metal Gear news, Konami is also allegedly planning remasters of the Metal Gear Solid games for consoles. However, it is isn’t clear what games in the series will be getting remastered nor does it nail down the scope these remasters will have. Bluepoint Games (which recently got acquired by Sony) released an HD collection of Metal Gear Solid 2, 3, and Peace Walker in 2011. It’s unclear if Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid V, or Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots would be included in this rumored bundle, especially the latter as that title has never left the PlayStation 3. There’s no release window for either project, but the remasters are said to come out before the MGS3 remake.
RELATED: The Medium Is More Evidence That Bloober Probably Can’t Handle Silent Hill
Metal Gear Solid is just one part of this new initiative as it mentions Castlevania and Silent Hill, too. There are still multiple Silent Hill games in development, which has been bubbling around for quite some time. One is said to be developed by Bloober Team, the Polish developer behind The Medium, Layers of Fear, Observer, and Blair Witch. The other is reported to be from a mysterious Japanese studio.
Castlevania had the smallest blurb in the report. The series is going to be “reimagined” by an internal Konami team with help from the outside, but there are no further details about it.
Handling Castlevania internally (for the most part) is surprising in the wake of Silent Hill and Metal Gear being handled externally but it is part of a policy shift within the publisher. After the abysmal reception to the internally developed titles like Metal Gear Survive and Contra Rogue Corps, Konami has been said to have swayed from solely relying on its own teams for its games. This is also seemingly why it has rejected pitches from outside developers to handle its franchises as Until Dawn and The Dark Pictures Anthology developer Supermassive Games seemingly pitched a Silent Hill game at one point.
The report also reveals that none of these projects will be officially shown off anytime soon. Konami is supposed to speak about at least some of these plans next year.
