Not too much is currently known about what the future holds for the likes of certain DC films, given Warner Bros.’ recent merger with Discovery. However, a recent New York Times profile on actress Jurnee Smollett seems to hint that her Black Canary film is still in the works.

The highly anticipated film got a brief mention in the recent profile, where it was noted that Smollett is set to reprise her role as Black Canary from the 2020 film Birds of Prey. The New York Times also briefly spoke with writer Misha Green (Lovecraft Country), who is writing the Black Canary film, and praised Smollett’s on-set decorum.
“Jurnee shows up on the day, and she has thought about 900 different ways to approach her character,” said Green.
The status of the Black Canary film has been up in the air ever since Discovery’s acquisition of Warner Bros. At the time of the move, it was widely reported that Discovery would begin to assess the DC Films division, which has already led to some delays and cancellations. This includes the Wonder Twins film, which was scrapped earlier this month.

Despite Birds of Prey releasing to incredible fanfare from audience members, the film didn’t perform very well at the box office, so it’s currently unclear whether or not Discovery would like to move forward with more films. At the very least, it seems like a Black Canary film isn’t completely out of the picture yet.
