The streaming release date estimate for The Drama is eagerly awaited by the film’s fans. The latest A24 film delves into dark comedy as a couple is forced to confront unsettling truths about each other, with their wedding in sight. Backed by effortless performances from Robert Pattinson and Zendaya, reviews suggest the film delivers an intense and dark yet memorable drama. Meanwhile, viewers waiting to stream it directly from home are looking for a streaming release date. So, when is the film coming to digital platforms?
Without further ado, here are the release estimates and the latest news on the film.
What is The Drama’s streaming release date estimate?
The streaming release date estimate for The Drama is sometime between July and August 2026. This is based on A24, the film’s distributor’s previous release pattern.
To establish a clearer estimated timeline, one can look at The Smashing Machine’s release dates. It was released on October 3, 2025. It arrived on PVOD sites on November 4, 2025, followed by a release on HBO Max on January 23, 2026.
The Drama debuted in theaters on April 3, 2026. So, if the studio follows a similar release strategy, the film is likely to stream on PVOD sites sometime in May 2026 at the earliest. Interested viewers can rent and buy a digital copy of the film on sites like Fandango at Home, Amazon Prime Video, and Apple TV.
The Drama will arrive on HBO Max later this year, roughly 3-4 months after the film’s theatrical release. This means HBO Max subscribers can expect to stream the film sometime in July or August 2026.
The Drama news and updates
The Kristoffer Borgli-directed film had its early premiere on March 17. Since then, professional critics have praised the film. ComingSoon‘s Jonathan Sim gave it an 8/10 score. Meanwhile, other outlets, including The Guardian, The Independent, and Empire, have rated it four stars.
The cast of The Drama features Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Mamoudou Athie, Alana Haim, Hailey Gates, and Sydney Lemmon, among others.

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with Forbidden Fruits director Meredith Alloway about her feature debut. Alloway discussed her style, the film’s gore and sexuality, plus the sequel tease at the end. Starring Lili Reinhart, Lola Tung, Victoria Pedretti, and Alexandra Shipp, it is now playing in theaters.
“Free Eden employee Apple secretly runs a witchy femme cult in the basement of the mall store after hours – with fellow fruits Cherry and Fig. But when new hire Pumpkin challenges their performative sisterhood, the women are forced to face their own poisons or succumb to a bloody fate,” says the synopsis.
Tyler Treese: Meredith, congrats on Forbidden Fruits. I had such a fun time watching this. You open the film very boldly. There’s a guy masturbating in a parking lot. A few minutes later a guy says, “I want them to spit in my mouth.” There’s a very sexually-charged energy to this opening. Did you wanna let people to know what they were in for with this wild ride, or why was the opening that?
Meredith Alloway: So the opening is sort of an iteration of the play written by Lily Houghton, Of the Woman Came the Beginning of Sin and Through Her We All Die. If I’m remembering it correctly, ’cause it’s gone through so many iterations, this happens to someone on a subway, you know? Then, when we moved the play, we sort of set it in Dallas. I was like, “Well, what’s the Dallas version of this?” It’s like people in their cars.
It’s hilarious to me that it would be like a dad in a polo shirt and khakis, just like everything about the movie. We were always like, “Follow the giggle, follow the satire of it all.” But I do think it gives people permission to go, “This movie’s gonna be chaotic. This movie’s not gonna take itself too seriously.” So I’m glad that you were getting those vibes because that’s what we were going for.
I love that this took place in a mall because people don’t know this now, but malls really were their own ecosystems, and it’s sad to see them die out over time. Can you discuss the importance of setting this in a mall and why that was key to the story? Because I thought it was really fun to have one location, but for it to be so varied.
Yeah, I mean, again: paying homage to the play, which is sort of one setting in the store. I was like, “Let’s move it to a mall.” The play was set in New York. I was like, “Lily, how do you feel about moving it to Dallas?”
I’m from Dallas, and the mall is based on a mall that will not be named, which is still cool and it’s beautiful. It was built in the sixties. It has natural light has everything from like Neiman Marcus to H&M, and you go at Christmas and there’s still cars lined up trying to get parking spots. To me, there is an ecosystem, and I think that this movie is very much about power dynamics and also women trying to build a garden in a literal capitalist structure.
Not to be like overtly political about it, but to be like honest about how these girls working at a store where they are all trying to make money informs their relationship. It also gives us a chance to, I love that you noticed the line, “I want her to spit my mouth.” We did that in ADR, and I believe that that is my manager and a producer on the movie, Trent Hubbard. I was like, “We need more chattering about them,” so he’s gonna be happy that you noticed that.
I was really impressed that this was your feature-length debut because the film has such a defined style to it. Can you speak to finding that confidence to really just have a style down for your debut?
Meredith Alloway: I think I surrounded myself with people that had done this before and people that were very inspiring to me because I’ve made a bunch of shorts. But a feature is a different ballgame, as you’ve said. Our DP [Karim Hussain] is spectacular. I was a huge fan of his, his films that he shot for Brandon Cronenberg, Possessor and Infinity Pool, and he goes for it. He is fearless and he can really help me hone in on the style he own.
He also owns like 5,000 Blu-rays. He’s such a cinephile. So I could be like, “We can’t split a whole body, can we split a head?” And he’d be like, “Oh, let’s watch this movie from the seventies, Shogun Assassin.” Then that, I was like, “Oh my God.” He’s an encyclopedia.
Our costume designer, Sarah Millman, and our production designer, Ciara Vernon, had done this before, had their own vision, and so I just was sort of shepherding it. Also, the cast, these ladies are experienced in what they do, and they really elevated and helped me do my job.
This movie has a really fun ending and a mid-credit scene that is a tease for a possible continuation. Do you actually have an idea for a sequel, or is it just a fun way to bring the story full circle?
A little bit of both. I tend to love, particularly in a genre film, like I think Sinners does it so well. Huge, huge, huge, huge fan of Ryan Coogler. But I think it’s so fun to have a genre film do that. I also have some ideas for the next movie. Lily and I have tinkered about. And I do think it would be fun to follow Sharon and Apple is all I will say.
Not to go into too many spoilers, but there are some deaths later on in this movie that are just balls-to-the-wall disgusting. You really went for it there. How was it making that decision that if people were gonna die, we’re going all out and gonna go crazy with it?
I mean, we gotta keep body horror alive. I watched Coppola’s Bram Stroker’s Dracula when I was five. The Lost Boys is my Bible. I think that they do like gore and body horror in such a fun way that we can still laugh at it. It’s almost like the more you push it, the funnier it is. You know, like when we did a test screening, we did the… oh, I don’t wanna give it away. Oh, I almost gave it away. Let me just say some of the kills, people were laughing, and I was like, “Okay, I think that it’s working.” You know? So I really just wanted people to have a good time with them.
Thanks to Meredith Alloway for taking the time to talk about Forbidden Fruits.
The Housemaid is a psychological thriller movie directed by Paul Feig that was released in United States theaters this past December by Lionsgate. Based on the 2022 novel by Freida McFadden, the movie stars Sydney Sweeney as Millie Calloway, Amanda Seyfried as Nina Winchester, Brandon Sklenar as Andrew Winchester, and Michele Morrone as Enzo Accardi.
A sequel, titled The Housemaid’s Secret, also known as The Housemaid 2, is now in development. This will adapt the second book in McFadden’s series, which is also titled The Housemaid’s Secret.
When is the release date for The Housemaid’s Secret?
Per Deadline, The Housemaid’s Secret has been dated for December 17, 2027.
Currently, Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Secret Wars and Warner Bros. Pictures’ The Lord of the Rings: The Hunt for Gollum are also scheduled to arrive on December 17, 2027. Disney’s Frozen 3 is dated to arrive a few weeks before, on November 24, while Columbia Pictures’ Buds and Universal Pictures’ Murder, She Wrote both have December 22 release dates.
Sweeney will reprise her role as Millie in The Housemaid’s Secret, while Morrone also returns as Enzo. Nina and Andrew Winchester are not in The Housemaid’s Secret novel, and there’s been no announcement about Seyfried or Sklenar reprising their roles; however, it is known that Kirsten Dunst has joined the cast. Feig returns as director.
A description of the book reads, “It’s hard to find an employer who doesn’t ask too many questions about my past. So I thank my lucky stars that the Garricks miraculously give me a job, cleaning their stunning penthouse with views across the city and preparing fancy meals in their shiny kitchen. I can work here for a while, stay quiet until I get what I want. It’s almost perfect. But I still haven’t met Mrs. Garrick, or seen inside the guest bedroom. I’m sure I hear her crying. I notice spots of blood around the neck of her white nightgowns when I’m doing laundry. And one day I can’t help but knock on the door. When it gently swings open, what I see inside changes everything…”
The Housemaid is currently available to purchase or rent on platforms such as Prime Video, Apple TV, and more.
It looks like the real opponent for Mortal Kombat 2 will be the box office. The sequel to the 2021 action reboot made a heavy first strike with its incredible Red Band trailer, which garnered over 106 million hits on YouTube in just the first day of its release on July 21. It showed off Karl Urban, who famously plays Billy Butcher in The Boys, as the aging Hollywood martial arts icon Johnny Cage being convinced to enter a tournament to fight on behalf of the Earth (or specifically, Earthrealm). Since then, however, the movie was delayed from its original release date of October 24, 2025 to May 15, 2026, before it changed again to a week earlier on May 8. This is partly why early box office predictions for Mortal Kombat 2 are conservative, suggesting that it may have a tougher road to break even than originally anticipated.
What is Mortal Kombat 2 predicted to make at the box office?
Mortal Kombat 2 is projected to make somewhere between $40 million and $55 million in its opening weekend at the domestic box office (as of March 29).
This range comes from a March 27 report from analytics expert BoxOfficeTheory, which notes that the marketing for the film might have come out too strong too early. Several other movies releasing at around the same time as Mortal Kombat 2 are projected to make a bigger splash, with the domestic opener for the biopic Michael (April 24) coming in between $52 million and $75 million and The Devil Wears Prada 2 (May 1) posting similar numbers between $55 million and $80 million. The potential success for both of these films could pull casual viewers away from the martial arts flick.
At the very least, it looks like Mortal Kombat 2 will have better box office numbers than the first film, though that’s not a very high bar considering that it came out during the COVID-19 pandemic. The original 2021 movie earned $23 million in its domestic opener and went on to amass $84 million, split evenly between domestic and international sales. Its production budget of $55 million made its break-even point around $137 million, so the movie fell well short of its box office goals. However, it was still considered a breakout hit when it launched on HBO Max, becoming the streamer’s most successful film launch. So despite the struggle in theaters, it had enough pull for New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. to greenlight a sequel.
By comparison, Mortal Kombat 2 is following a more traditional route to box office success. According to The Numbers, the film has a slightly higher production budget of $68 million, which means that it will need to cross the $170 million barrier (about 2.5 times the budget) to be considered profitable. This could be tough if the film only earns the lower end of $40 million in its domestic opening weekend. On the other hand, commenters on the Box Office Reddit are more optimistic that the film will do well, with many believing that it will earn around $250 million to $300 million overall. One user is less confident, though, saying that the film will be comparable to Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, which only earned $174 million worldwide.
That said, fans of the Mortal Kombat game franchise are encouraged by the authenticity of the sequel and Karl Urban’s portrayal of Johnny Cage, alongside returning actors Jessica McNamee (Sonya Blade), Josh Lawson (Kano), Ludi Lin (Liu Kang), Lewis Tan (Cole Young), and more. The film’s story is also closer to the plot of the cult classic Mortal Kombat adaptation from 1995, with Earthrealm fighters being recruited to defeat Shao Kahn and his clan of bloodthirsty warriors, so it feels more like a reboot than the 2021 outing. The movie’s May 8 release date, despite all the maneuvering, is a good spot for a male-driven action film as it won’t have direct genre competitors against Michael, The Devil Wears Prada 2, and Hit Me Hard.

“The film follows Erin and Charlie as they work through a challenging new phase of their relationship on a trip to the desert. Both actors are in top form as they navigate major emotional highs and lows with humor and heart,” reads the official synopsis.

Magic Hour is directed by Aselton, who co-wrote the screenplay with Mark Duplass. The movie is executive-produced by Jay Duplass, Mark Duplass, and Mel Eslyn, with Emily A. Neumann serving as a producer. The creative team includes director of photography Sarah Whelden and production designer Arielle Ness-Cohn, along with editors Kate Boston and Stephanie Kaznocha.
Golden Globe nominee Alana Haim (Licorice Pizza) opened up about A24‘s highly anticipated black comedy thriller The Drama, led by Zendaya and Robert Pattinson. The movie is scheduled to debut in theaters on April 3, 2026.
What did Alana Haim say about the audience’s potential reaction to The Drama?
Haim will be playing Rachel, a friend of Zendaya and Pattinson’s characters who gets very disturbed by Emma’s secret in the upcoming movie. During a recent interview with THR, Haim warned that The Drama will definitely lead the audience to have some “very hard” or “very funny” discussions about Zendaya’s dark secret after watching the film.
“I saw it with some of my friends — we got an early screening, and it was really crazy the amount of discussion that happened after the movie,” Haim shared. “There are going to be very hard discussions, or very funny discussions, or very sad discussions. It kind of runs the gamut of emotion with this movie — and I think that without this movie, a lot of people wouldn’t be talking about those things, which is why you make art.”
She continued, “I am only coming from being in a band for my whole life, and I learned very quickly that you can’t look at anything, so I won’t be looking at anything. But I’m happy that there’s going to be discussions.”
The Drama is written and directed by Kristoffer Borgli. The Norwegian filmmaker is best known for his work on 2023’s Nicolas Cage-led acclaimed satirical dramedy Dream Scenario. The ensemble cast also includes Mamoudou Athie (Jurassic World: Dominion), Hailey Gates (Marty Supreme), Michael Abbott Jr. (Killers of the Flower Moon), Sydney Lemmon (Helstrom), YaYa Gosseli (We Can Be Heroes), Peyton Jackson (First Christmas), and more. The movie is produced by Square Peg’s Ari Aster and Lars Knudsen, along with Borgli and Tyler Campellone for Dilemma Films. It is also executive-produced by Chris Stinson.
“A couple faces a crisis in the days leading up to their wedding when unexpected revelations derail what one of them thought they knew about the other,” reads the synopsis.

It’s way too early for Oscars 2027 bets, but many have already put their money on who will earn a Best Picture nomination. The list of potential nominees is expansive given that the Academy anointed ten films (instead of the five it did before 2009), so these early predictions are on the safer side as far as bets go. However, the spread is missing a handful of movies that could make the final cut.
We’ve already covered some of the films that people think will dominate the 99th Academy Awards, and those two movies are unsurprisingly near the top of the pile. It won’t be until January 2027 that the Academy will officially announce the nominees, so we’ve got a long time for people to change their bets, especially as reviews and fan reactions for the movies on this list roll in. Still, that hasn’t stopped movie buffs from reading the tea leaves for next year’s Oscars.
Early odds on Oscars 2027 Best Picture nominees
Five movies have odds higher than 50% to be nominated for Best Picture at the 2027 Oscars, according to a bet on Kalshi (as of March 24). A good number of the other films in the spread have odds over 25%, so they’re hardly out of the picture. The full list of bets can be found below (but we expect these odds to change drastically before 2026 is through).
The Odyssey – 88%
Dune: Part Three – 76%
Digger – 67%
Wild Horse Nine – 65%
Project Hail Mary – 64%
Disclosure Day – 44%
Fjord – 39%
Josephine – 39%
The Adventures of Cliff Booth – 38%
Saturn Return – 38%
The Social Reckoning – 37%
Parallel Tales – 31%
All of a Sudden – 30%
Behemoth – 29%
Michael – 29%
Cry to Heaven – 30%
Narnia: The Magician’s Nephew – 27%
Werwulf – 27%
Artifical – 20%
Ink – 19%
Sense and Sensibility – 19%
I Love Boosters – 18%
The Entertainment System Is Down – 16%
The Death of Robin Hood – 11%
The Drama – 10%
Avengers: Doomsday – 6%
The top two contenders, The Odyssey and Dune Part 3, are no surprise. Set to arrive in the summer on July 17, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey already has a reported budget of $250 million and stars the likes of Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Charlize Theron, and Zendaya. This adaptation of the Homer classic has Oscar bait written all over it, harkening back to The Gladiator which won Best Picture in 2001. Meanwhile, Dune Part 3 is the much-anticipated end of Denis Villeneuve’s Dune trilogy, and while Part 2 didn’t receive as many Oscar nods as the first film did, this capper has the potential to rake in awards out of a sense of completion.
Meanwhile, Amazon MGM Studios’ Project Hail Mary has received widespread acclaim and could be given the nod for several technical Oscars. Digger is already on the short list as it is directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu and stars Tom Cruise in a non-action role that could finally give him the Best Actor Oscar win. Also in the conversation is Wild Horse Nine given that it’s headed by Martin McDonagh, another director that the Academy favors.
Close behind them in the middle of the pack is Stephen Spielberg’s Disclosure Day, a film that reunites the famed director with his favorite subject — aliens. The sci-fi flick features a soundtrack by John Williams and a star-studded cast with Emily Blunt, Josh O’Conner, Colin Firth, and Colman Domingo.
It is joined by two sequels, The Social Reckoning that is a companion piece to 2010’s The Social Network and The Adventures of Cliff Booth that interestingly has director David Fincher follow up on 2019’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood directed by Quentin Tarantino, who serves as a writer for the upcoming film.
Several Best Picture candidates are not on the list
While the betting spread has over 25 movies on the list, there are a few that it doesn’t mention. Among the snubs is Tony, directed by Matt Johnson, that is a biographical drama based on the life of famed food icon Anthony Bourdain. The biopic, which stars Dominic Sessa and Antonio Banderas, could tug on the heartstrings as a profile of a beloved figure who passed way too soon.
Being Heumann, which dramatizes the work of disability activist Judith Heumann, isn’t on the list either, though several critics are spotlighting the Apple Studios film early in the year. That said, the biopic genre will be saturated in 2026 with Michael that goes through the life of Michael Jackson, Artificial that covers OpenAI’s Sam Altman, and Ink that stars Guy Pearce as controversial newspaper magnate Rupert Murdoch.
Another contender that’s missing from the spread is the film, Clarissa, which reimagines the famous 1925 novel Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Woolf. Directed and produced by brothers Arie Esiri and Chuko Esiri, the film has been picked up by distributor Neon, which is known for picking movies that have award potential, such as 2026 Best Picture Oscar nominees The Secret Agent and Sentimental Value. That’s why some of Neon’s other picks, like Fjord, All of a Sudden, and Parallel Tales, are on the betting list; however, a few like Chloe Domont’s A Place in Hell and Werner Herzog’s Bucking Fastard are conspicuously not on the list either.
The Dog Stars, directed by Ridley Scott, could be a spoiler too, with the postapocalyptic film casting the likes of Jacob Elordi, Josh Brolin, and Margaret Qualley. Similarly, the upcoming crime drama Paper Tiger, starring Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, and Miles Teller, could make waves for its cast as well. The actors in both of these movies have the potential of getting a Best Actor or Actress nod, which would help in putting the films in the Best Picture circle.

Paapa Essiedu addressed reactions to his casting in the upcoming Harry Potter television series. He discussed his role as Severus Snape and the attention surrounding the project.
Paapa Essiedu on controversy surrounding his casting in Harry Potter TV show
Paapa Essiedu said he has received race-fuelled abuse and death threats following his casting as Professor Severus Snape in the upcoming Harry Potter television series. He told The Sunday Times, “I’ve been told, ‘Quit or I’ll murder you,’” and added, “If I look at Instagram I will see somebody saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you.’” He stated, “Nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job.”
Essiedu acknowledged the emotional impact of the abuse, saying, “I’d be lying if I said it doesn’t affect me emotionally.” He added that despite the threats, “while I hope I’ll be OK, nobody should have to encounter this.” The actor emphasised that the backlash followed his casting in a role previously portrayed by Alan Rickman.
Essiedu said the response has also motivated him in his approach to the role. He stated, “The abuse fuels me,” and explained it has made him “more passionate about making this character my own.” He added that representation was significant, saying he thought about “the idea that a kid like me can see themselves represented in that world.”
The actor also spoke about his connection to the Harry Potter books, stating, “I was an avid reader as a kid.” He said, “My mum couldn’t afford a babysitter in the holidays, so she would take me to the library,” and added, “I loved ‘Harry Potter.’” He confirmed he had not watched the original films but described the books as “escapism when other things were less easy for me.”
The studio will launch the series in 2027 with a new cast, including Dominic McLaughlin, Arabella Stanton, and Alastair Stout. Essiedu has signed a ten-year contract and said, “It was a big commitment,” adding, “I’ll be 45 by the time I finish.”

While Richard Linklater’s ambitious adaptation of Merrily We Roll Along is still two decades away, fans can at least enjoy a wonderfully filmed version of the 2023 Broadway revival. Featuring a star-studded cast of Daniel Radcliffe, Jonathan Groff, and Lindsay Mendez, the unique musical is charmingly performed. Now available to own at home, the Merrily We Roll Along Blu-ray allows fans to rewatch Maria Friedman’s revival any time they want.
“Spanning two decades, Merrily We Roll Along traces the complex, often heartbreaking unravelling of a once-unbreakable friendship between composer Franklin Shepard (Jonathan Groff) and his two closest friends playwright-lyricist Charley (Daniel Radcliffe) and writer Mary (Lindsay Mendez) . But this is no ordinary story. Told in reverse, the film winds backwards through time, beginning in fractured adulthood and journeying back to the bright-eyed optimism of youth when everything still seemed possible. Long considered a cult classic ahead of its time, Merrily We Roll Along features some of Stephen Sondheim’s most personal and piercing songs. Now, in a bold new cinematic interpretation of the Tony Award-winning musical, the film invites audiences into the heart of the story not just watching it unfold but inhabiting it. Shot with intimacy and immediacy, it places viewers on stage and inside the action, offering a deeply immersive experience that reveals the emotional truth of the piece in a way no theatre seat ever could,” says the official description.
The core conceit of Merrily We Roll Along is that it’s told in reverse. The film begins with a celebration of a hit film release that soon turns sour after a fractured friendship is brought up. The film is then a series of flashbacks, with a story of ambitious artists coming together and then falling apart due to the business side of the industry and personal shortcomings. However, due to its reverse nature, it winds up ending at a happy, inspiring note rather than the bummer it’d be if told chronologically.
I saw the filmed version in theaters last year, and thankfully, it holds up on rewatch. All three of the leads are stellar, with Radcliffe really shining when performing “Franklin Shepard, Inc.” Groff’s transformation over the course of the story is also great to see, as his wide-eyed optimism at the end is a far cry from what we see in the beginning. The Merrily We Roll Along Blu-ray does these performances justice as the proshot has great detail and sounds incredible with a DTS-HD 5.1 Master Audio track.
The only bummer about the Merrily We Roll Along Blu-ray is the sparse bonus features. All that is there is a theatrical trailer. A commentary track with the cast would’ve been great, especially with how charming they all are, but nothing additional is included.
Merrily We Roll Along Blu-ray Review: Final Verdict
The Merrily We Roll Along Blu-ray is a great way to enjoy the Broadway musical at home. Looking great and sounding even better, the filmed version of the stage production is charming and filled with catchy songs. The performances of Radcliffe and Groff really stand out, and it will be fun to compare them to the Linklater film in … well, 20 years or so.

Warner Archive Collection’s latest genre-themed compilation collects six classic movies based on Broadway musicals. Wonderful stars, such as Marlon Brando, Frank Sinatra, Natalie Wood, Gene Kelly, and Twiggy appear in this assortment of musicals. The six musicals are: Guys and Dolls, Gypsy, The Pajama Game, Damn Yankees, Briagadoon, and The Boy Friend.
“6 big stage musical favorites are brought together for this dazzling collection of musical favorites. Frank Loesser’s Guys and Dolls starring Marlon Brando and Frank Sinatra, Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood star in Gypsy, the dynamic choreography of Bob Fosse adds zing to Doris Day in The Pajama Game and Gwen Verdon in Damn Yankees, Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse shine in Lerner and Loewe’s Brigadoon, and Ken Russell’s wild imagination creates an homage to the genre as Twiggy stars in The Boy Friend,” says the official description.
The earliest film included is 1954’s Brigadoon, which stars Gene Kelly, and while it isn’t my favorite Kelly performance, him and Cyd Charisse are still charming throughout. 1955’s Guys and Dolls is the most famous of the films included, and for good reason, as it’s a classic with a stacked cast and “Luck Be a Lady” is still quite catchy. The biggest surprise for me was 1957’s The Pajama Game, which features most of the original Broadway cast (similar to the Rent film) but adds in Doris Day. Interestingly, it was planned to be remade by John Hughes in the 90s, but it sadly never happened, although the original holds up well and can still be enjoyed.
1958’s Damn Yankees is also iconic and is quite unique as a supernatural sports musical (can you think of a more niche genre?). It is still fun to revisit with “Whatever Lola Wants” being a great song and its cast largely being the Broadway cast besides Tab Hunter. I wasn’t very familiar with the Rosalind Russell and Natalie Wood-led Gypsy, but it has lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and is quite funny. Finally, 1971’s The Boy Friend, which stars Twiggy, is the most modern film of the bunch. One of director Ken Russell’s most underrated movies, it really showcases Twiggy as a star throughout and has aged quite well.
Each film is included on its own disc in the Broadway on the Big Screen collection, which means we get several bonus features included, just like the original stand-alone releases. Brigadoon features four deleted scenes and a trailer, while The Pajama Game has one unused song, a song selection, and a trailer. Guys and Dolls has pretty extensive bonus features as it has two length featurettes titling to 50 minutes on the film’s creation, plus several interviews, musical performances, and its trailer. Damn Yankees is the weakest of the bunch, with two trailers and a song selection. Finally, Gypsy has two thought-to-be-lost songs and a trailer, while The Boy Friend has a nine-minute featurette that has Twiggy and Russell discussing the film and its trailer.
Broadway on the Big Screen Collection Blu-ray Review: Final Verdict
A strong and varied collection of musical movies that were based on Broadway hits, the Broadway on the Big Screen Collection Blu-ray is an easy recommendation for any fans of the genre. Not only does it feature plenty of star power, but the transfers are strong with each of the six films looking sharp and sounding great.
