Zach Cregger has given his biggest horror opening of the year, as his Resident Evil reboot clawed its way to the top of the domestic box office. It shattered franchise records in the process, surpassing even the director’s own Weapons.

Resident Evil beats all franchise records, opens bigger than predicted

Resident Evil debuted to $60 million domestically, blowing past early box office projections of $40 million to $50 million. International markets added $48.3 million, pushing the global box office total to $108.3 million in a single weekend (via Box Office Mojo).

That domestic number more than doubles the franchise’s previous best. Resident Evil: Afterlife, the 2010 installment starring Milla Jovovich, opened to $26.6 million and held the record for over a decade. Cregger’s film also outperformed his last release: Weapons opened to $43.5 million domestically before finishing its run at $270 million worldwide.

Sony bet $75 million on the reboot, the eighth film in the series and the studio’s second attempt at reviving the property. The first, 2021’s Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City, fizzled with $42 million globally against a $25 million budget. Critics and audiences alike have embraced this version. Resident Evil sits at 96% on Rotten Tomatoes, while CinemaScore exit polls handed it a B+ grade.

The movie stars Austin Abrams as a medical courier who navigates a viral outbreak of monsters in Raccoon City. Abrams previously worked with Cregger on Weapons. Moreover, the box office win cements Zach Cregger’s standing as one of horror’s most bankable directors.

He broke out with 2022’s Barbarian before Weapons became a sleeper hit last August. Sony now looks to ride that momentum through the coming weeks, with strong word-of-mouth expected to keep the Resident Evil box office tally climbing. As the weekend’s only major wide release, the film faced no real competition for the top spot.

Amanda Seyfried addressed whether she will be part of Nathan Fielder‘s upcoming documentary, You Can See Everything. Seyfried portrayed Elizabeth Holmes in the biographical drama miniseries The Dropout, the main subject of Fielder’s project.

When asked by Entertainment Tonight whether she would star in the documentary, the 40-year-old’s response seemed to dodge the question. Even viewers in the comments agreed that she did not say a clear “no.”

Seyfried said, “Listen, everybody keeps asking me about it. Like so many people from ‘The Dropout’ keep texting me about it. I’m like, ‘It’s Nathan Fielder, and I know what he does.’ It’s wild, and everybody is saying that it is wild. So, I don’t know. I wanna know more.”

What was Amanda Seyfried’s The Dropout show about?

The Dropout is based on an ABC audio podcast of the same name. It was hosted by journalist Rebecca Jarvis and followed the story of Elizabeth Holmes. It also focused on the related criminal fraud trial, United States v. Elizabeth A. Holmes, et al. The miniseries delved deep into Holmes’ personal history, examining the possible motivations that led her to commit fraud through her now-defunct company, Theranos.

What happens in War Season 1 trailer?

The War trailer centers on tech entrepreneur Morgan Henderson and international film star Carla Duval. West and Miller play the estranged couple as their marriage breakdown becomes a major legal case.

The trailer frames the dispute as potentially “the biggest divorce trial in British legal history.” Morgan claims he was “honey-trapped,” while Carla’s legal team prepares to aggressively target his vast fortune.

Their attorneys make clear that winning takes precedence over maintaining the moral high ground. The proceedings rapidly turn into a public smear campaign, with both sides searching for leverage to dismantle their opponent.

The fallout also reaches the corporate world. One law firm discovers that confidential case information has been leaked to the opposing side.

That breach creates another threat for the lawyers handling the divorce. It also pulls ambitious young attorney Jonathan “Johnny” Warren deeper into the increasingly hostile case.

Archie Renaux plays Johnny, who is surrounded by veteran lawyers from both firms. Phoebe Fox and James McArdle star as Serena Byrne and Nicholas Taylor of Taylor & Byrne.

Nina Sosanya plays Beatrice “Queen Bea” Ubosi, while Pip Torrens portrays St John Smallwood for rival firm Cathcarts & Sons. The ensemble also includes Celia Imrie, Nick Mohammed, Emma Laird, and Archie Panjabi.

War premieres Thursday, October 1, on HBO and HBO Max. Episodes will arrive weekly, while the UK premiere follows October 2 on Sky and NOW.

Ben Taylor serves as lead director. Kay created, wrote, and executive produced the series, which is produced by New Pictures and Observatory Pictures with Sky and HBO.

The series has already received a second-season order. Marisa Tomei, Kelly Macdonald, and David Harewood are joining the next chapter, which will center on a new legal battle.

Hope 2 Gets Strong Tease & Story Details, Could Lead to Sci-Fi Monster Movie Trilogy

Hope 2 has received a massive update from its director, who teased plans for a sci-fi monster trilogy. Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin‘s Hope came out earlier this month in theaters and is led by Hwang Jung-min and former Squid Game star Jung Ho-yeon.

Na Hong-jin has teased what fans can expect from Hope 2, following the events of the first part where the main character Bum-seok, played by Jung-min, was seen limping at the end while being severely injured.

Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the director mentioned a darker setting for the sequel. “As I was developing the story, it got longer, and I realized I would need at least a sequel, or maybe three films, to tell the whole thing. The first film takes place entirely in the daylight, but the sun is setting as we get to the end, right? Well, this is a bit of a preview, but when night comes in part two, military backup is going to arrive.”

Teasing Bum-seok’s fate in Hope 2, he added, “he’s still alive and in the fight, right? Don’t be surprised if he crosses over to the North…”

Why Hope could be bigger than it first appears

Na Hong-jin hasn’t specifically mentioned this, yet it appears the Hope saga may expand its sci-fi monster story with a mind-boggling shift to North Korea, in some way or the other.

Released on September 9, 2026, the first part managed to get a solid reception from critics as well as the audience members. It currently holds an impressive Tomatometer and Popcornmeter score of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.

If it has to turn into a trilogy, however, Hope 2 will have to become a big hit compared to its predecessor. That’s because the original hasn’t really generated strong impact at the box office. It has managed to earn just over $41 million so far, on a reported budget of $46 million.

Hope’s ensemble cast also features Zo In-sung, Eum Moon-suk, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton.

Harry Potter fans who have already read the books and watched the movies must be well aware of Moaning Myrtle. She is a ghost and former Hogwarts student, haunting one of the girls’ bathrooms at the school.

Her real name is Myrtle Elizabeth Warren, and she was a Muggle-born witch. At Hogwarts, she belonged to the Ravenclaw house. She was killed in 1943 by the Serpent of Slytherin, released by Tom Riddle.

One Harry Potter star believes that the HBO reboot of the wizarding world franchise has a chance at being better than its movies. The reboot, by virtue of being a show, is likely to be able to adapt more material than the films can.

Gary Oldman, who essayed the role of Sirius Black in Warner Bros.’s adaptation of J.K. Rowling’s books, spoke about what he thinks the show could do better. Speaking with EW, he said, “We had to cut a lot, and still we could only get the films down to, like, three hours. I believe [the TV series is] gonna do it pretty much word for word, which I think as a viewer would be more satisfying.”

How HBO’s Harry Potter series could adapt more of Rowling’s books

As pointed out by Oldman, a lot of what the books had to offer had to be cut from the Harry Potter film series. The novel series grew larger with each entry, and the creators had to split the last book in two to do it justice. However, this still cut out a slew of key characters and storylines, including Regulus Black, Sirius’s younger brother, and side characters like Peeves the Poltergeist.

With the Harry Potter HBO series essentially having eight hours to adapt each book, many characters, concepts, and moments that were removed from the books will definitely find their way into the adaptation.

Oldman remembered his time with the franchise fondly, spotlighting director Chris Columbus for his contribution to the films as a whole. He stated, “When you think of that initial cast, someone in the story who doesn’t get a lot of credit anymore is Chris Columbus, who set the world up and cast it. We were extraordinarily lucky to have those people come back again, and again, and again, and literally grow into those roles.”

Mike Flanagan is bringing together several familiar names for his next horror project. Matthew Lillard is reuniting with the filmmaker, while Cooper Koch and Prey star Amber Midthunder have joined the cast. The psychological thriller-horror will also mark Alexandra Magistro’s feature directorial debut.

According to Deadline, Flanagan is producing Rot through his Red Room Pictures banner. Geo Bradley wrote the screenplay, which made the 2024 Black List. Production of the film is expected to begin in Vancouver in November 2026, while the makers have yet to announce the release date.

Rot follows an antisocial man who works as a trauma cleaner while dealing with obsessive compulsions and the death of his hoarder mother. His job forces him to confront his past, but the experience begins to take a disturbing toll on his mental state. The story combines psychological thriller elements with body horror.

Bradley’s screenplay earned a spot on the 2024 Black List, which recognizes notable unproduced screenplays. The project combines elements of “Repulsion” and David Cronenberg-style body horror.

Koch will star in the film after earning Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for his portrayal of Erik Menendez in Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story. He will also appear in Luca Guadagnino’s upcoming film, Artificial.

Midthunder gained popularity for playing Naru in Prey, the 2022 Predator prequel. The actor has recently appeared in Monarch: Legacy of Monsters and Novocaine.

Lillard, meanwhile, has recently appeared in Scream 7, Daredevil: Born Again, and Five Nights at Freddy’s 2. His casting marks another collaboration with Flanagan after the two worked together on The Life of Chuck in 2024. Lillard and Midthunder will also star in Flanagan’s upcoming television series Carrie.

Keanu Reeves leads the movie adaptation of Oliver Lowe’s Kill Current novel

Kill Current will be the first novel in Oliver Lowe’s thriller series. According to the story’s logline, it follows Jon Hendricks, “a burned-out CIA officer who is pulled back in to avenge the protégé he trained and lost.” The novel is scheduled to be published by Zando in May 2027.

Reeves will also serve as a producer on The Arena’s adaptation along with Alexandra Grant. Molly Stern and her publisher Zando will serve as executive producers. Kill Current will also mark the first project from Reeves and Grant’s new production banner, Two Dragonflies.

Speaking with Deadline about the upcoming project, Reeves said, “I’m excited and grateful for the opportunity to develop the character Jon Hendricks with these wonderful collaborators and that this is the project that launches Two Dragonflies, which I share with my partner, Alexandra Grant.”

GTA 6 Unlocks Early for Millions of Players Worldwide

Players eagerly awaiting Rockstar Games’ GTA 6 may get their hands on Vice City slightly earlier than expected thanks to a regional digital unlock schedule.

Rockstar Games’ highly anticipated open-world video game is set to launch globally in November. However, a new update has a loophole through which millions of gamers can get started early in Vice City.

Where GTA 6 unlocks first and how the global rollout works

GTA Vice has noted that the PlayStation Store listings for GTA 6 reveal a worldwide unlock schedule. This means it won’t unlock everywhere simultaneously. Certain players in some regions will get access up to 19 hours before others as the game rolls out across 63 regions. 

Since the game won’t launch on disk, all players will be subject to PlayStation and Xbox’s scheduling for the game’s online release.

The timestamps reveal it will unlock first in New Zealand, followed by Australia, Japan, South Korea, and others. If PlayStation sticks to its schedule, then players in the U.K. and the U.S. will be among the last to get access to the game. For those keeping track, the game will be released at midnight local time, hence the time differences across regions.

Grand Theft Auto 6 has been in the making for almost a decade. The game will be Rockstar’s first release on the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. The players will take on the roles of Jason and Lucia as they wreak havoc across Vice City and the state of Leonida.

Like previous Rockstar titles, GTA 6 will also feature a massive open world full of dynamic activities. Similar to GTA 5, players will be able to freely switch between Jason and Lucia during gameplay.

GTA 6 is currently available for digital pre-order on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S ahead of its November 19, 2026, launch.

“I was on these movies for a long time. I went off and made Chad Powers when Steve and the Russos came on, and then I came back into Avengers and was helping out Steve and Joe and Anthony, and then went and made Season 2 of Chad Powers,” he revealed.

Chris and Erik later joined the two movies as Waldron came back after completing Chad Powers. Since then, he’s been “helping some more, working with Chris and Erik and Steve and everybody.”

Avengers: Doomsday is set to hit theaters later this year on December 18, 2026. The movie will see the return of Robert Downey Jr., but not as Tony Stark/Iron Man. He will play the main supervillain, Victor von Doom.

The massive cast also includes Florence Pugh as Yelena Belova/Black Widow, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/Invisible Woman, Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/Human Torch, and Tom Hiddleston as Loki, among others.

As for Avengers: Secret Wars, it will be released next year on December 17, 2027. Marvel has yet to officially announce details on its full cast.

Lanterns Writer Reveals the Surprising Movie That Inspired John Stewart’s Family Story

Lanterns writer revealed the film that shaped one of the series’ most personal arcs. Vanessa Baden Kelly has recently shed light on the movie that inspired John Stewart‘s family story. Episode 3 of the HBO Max series delves into Stewart’s origin story and how he was trained to become Green Lantern.

The 40-year-old recently spoke with Collider, reflecting on Stewart’s relationship with his family as depicted throughout the third episode. Kelly said, “You will see how their relationship plays out throughout his adult years, but one of the things that I would keep harkening back to in the room is the film King Richard. It was really interesting because I have an almost 11-year-old, and when that film came out, I thought it was a really beautiful tribute by two daughters to their father.”

The Lanterns writer further added, “Regardless of how I felt about anything, those daughters hold their father up here, and they believe that they would not have been where they were had it not been for him, and they made a film to highlight that.”

Kelly further noted that the hardships Stewart’s parents put him through were inspired by how parents traditionally shape their children’s futures by pushing them through difficult situations.

How did John Stewart’s parents train him to become Green Lantern?

DC’s Lanterns third episode shows how John Sr. was first chosen over Hal Jordan to become a Green Lantern but failed the test for not being fearless, which ultimately left him traumatized. Later, Lianna, a member of the Guardians of the Universe, visits John’s mother, Bernadette, promising her that Stewart will have the chance to become a Green Lantern when he grows up. Since John turned five, his parents taught him to be fearless so he could eventually handle superhero responsibilities.

Young Stewart was made to shoot apples placed above his parents’ heads, was left alone at night in dangerous parts of the city, and was taught to handle firearms. His parents deliberately exposed him to challenging situations to make him fearless enough to qualify for the test of becoming a Green Lantern.

In 2016, John finally takes the test and qualifies. Lianna interviews him and selects him to become the new Green Lantern, after which he must undergo Hal Jordan‘s training.

Obsession Character’s Controversial Return Gets First Look, Comes With Secret Easter Egg

This year’s horror hit Obsession will be a highlight at Universal Studios’ Halloween Horror Nights. Fans will also get a chance to hunt for a very special Easter Egg at the event.

Last month, HHN Creative Director and executive producer John Murdy announced that Obsession’s popular character Nikki will be present at this year’s event. The character, originally played by Inde Navarrette in the movie, will roam around at HHN.

The performers who will play Nikki at HHN will be able to interact with the fans as well. They will also use dialogue scripted by Murdy and directly inspired by the movie.

However, Nikki’s appearance at Halloween Horror Nights as a typical “slasher villain” has fuelled controversy. Many fans have argued that the character was a victim in the movie. She was trapped under the deadly spell by Bear, who fans believe is the real villain.

Curry Barker adds a hidden surprise for ‘Obsession’ fans

Halloween Horror Nights has also arranged an Easter Egg hunt at the event for Obsession fans. Guests can check out Universal Studios Hollywood’s social media, including its Instagram Story, where a password will be provided. Fans can use the password to interact with the performer playing Nikki.

It will feature the One Wish Willow phone number that Bear called in the film in an attempt to modify the fated wish. “I love the scene where Bear tries to call the customer service department, and when I was reading about the making of the film, I realized that Curry did that voice,” Murdy said.

The HHN creative director also revealed that Obsession’s director Curry Barker has prepared a surprise for the fans.

“I’ve asked him to record a special message for our fans as if he were the customer service rep from One Wish Willow,” Murdy announced. “So it’ll have a phone number on it, and they can call the number and get an exclusive message from Curry,” he added (via The Hollywood Reporter).

Halloween Horror Nights at Universal Studios Hollywood begins on Thursday, September 3.

Live-Action Disney+ Series & All TV Shows Canceled in August 2026

Several television series and upcoming projects have been canceled during August 2026, affecting platforms including Disney+, Hulu, Prime Video, and HBO Max. The lineup includes shows that ended after multiple seasons as well as projects dropped before reaching the screen. Disney+’s planned live-action “Gargoyles” series is among the latest projects to be confirmed as no longer moving forward.

List of all TV shows canceled in August 2026

August 2026 brought a number of cancellations across streaming services and television networks, with several series ending after one or more seasons. Here is a look at the shows and projects that were canceled: 

• ReStyle: Prime Video reportedly ended the fashion series after one season on August 5. The announcement of its cancellation happened after the show’s first season.
• The Great American Baking Show: Roku reportedly canceled the baking competition after four seasons on August 11.
• After the Flood: ITV confirmed on August 12 that the drama would not receive a third series. The announcement ended speculation about the show’s future following its second series.
• Deli Boys: Hulu canceled the comedy after two seasons on August 14. The series follows two brothers whose lives change after they discover their father’s criminal activities.
• Only Child: BBC canceled the series after two series on August 19. The comedy will not return for another season following its second chapter.
• Upstart Crow: The BBC comedy will not return with new episodes or the previously considered Christmas special. David Mitchell confirmed that there are no further episodes planned.
• Not Suitable for Work: Hulu canceled the series after one season on August 24. The comedy, which was produced by Mindy Kaling, will not continue with a second season.

TV projects stopped during development

• The Bonfire of the Vanities: Apple TV+ passed on the planned adaptation on August 5. 
• David Fincher’s Squid Game spinoff: The reported project, which carried the working title Heckler, was said to have stopped moving forward at Netflix on August 6.
• American Blue: The crime drama American Blue will not proceed at HBO Max. The project featured Milo Ventimiglia as its lead. 
• Live-action Power Rangers: Disney+ halted development of the planned live-action series on August 13. The project was abandoned before production began.
• Live-action Gargoyles: Disney+ confirmed on August 31 that the planned live-action reboot would not move forward.

Some projects were delayed or deprioritized in August but were not canceled. Waller is no longer a priority at HBO but remains in development at DC Studios. Paradise Lost has also been put on hold at HBO, although it could still move forward. Neither series was officially canceled.

Tom Cruise’s Days of Thunder 2 Must Reinvent Nostalgia or Risk Ruining His Legacy

In Days of Thunder 2, Tom Cruise must figure out a way to reinvent nostalgia. Otherwise, he risks ruining his legacy.

Cruise is returning to the racetrack to star in Days of Thunder 2, Paramount‘s sequel to 1990’s Days of Thunder. Cruise will reprise his role as Cole Trickle, the hotshot Nascar driver who won the Daytona 500 in the first movie.

On Cruise’s social media, the actor revealed that Anne Hathaway will star in Days of Thunder 2. Hathaway is expected to play an engineer and team owner in the sequel. Days of Thunder 2 will be filmed for Imax and other premium large-screen formats, including Dolby and 4DX.

Days of Thunder 2 races into theaters on June 2, 2028. Jonathan Levine has been tapped to direct for Paramount.

Cruise has a history of resurrecting characters from his past for sequels. The 64-year-old has played Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise since 1996. However, the more relevant example of Cruise resurrecting an old character for a sequel is Top Gun: Maverick.

Cruise can make Days of Thunder 2 like Top Gun: Maverick, but it must learn from the lessons of a successful sequel or risk tarnishing the original’s legacy.

Days of Thunder 2 can follow Top Gun: Maverick blueprint without becoming a nostalgia trip

There is nothing wrong with nostalgia. Cruise has built a career around longing for characters of the past. Audiences love when Cruise plays Ethan Hunt and Pete “Maverick” Mitchell. Add Cole Trickle to the list. Cruise should absolutely leverage the past to build his future if that’s what audiences want.

However, legacy sequels do not have a strong track record of working. Top Gun: Maverick is one of the shining examples of how to properly make a legacy sequel. The key is to honor the past while advancing the future. Top Gun: Maverick included many nods to the original movie, including the beach scenes, infectious music, and the honoring of Iceman.

More importantly, the sequel added new storylines, developed strong characters, and capitalized on strong technical advancements. The result worked as Top Gun: Maverick became the highest-grossing movie of Cruise’s career.

Days of Thunder 2 must follow the Top Gun: Maverick blueprint. The sequel can capture Cole’s cockiness and the invigorating racing scenes. It may also include a moment to reflect on Robert Duvall, who played Harry Hogge, Cole’s crew chief in the first movie. Duvall died earlier this year.

However, Days of Thunder 2 must craft a fresh story inside this legacy IP. It’s the only way audiences will respond positively to it. Give audiences something they’ve never seen before while highlighting the original’s style and spirit. If that doesn’t happen, the original’s legacy and Cruise’s career will suffer.

Cruise figured out a legacy sequel once before. He should learn from its lessons before returning to the racetrack.
