The Cannes 2020 curated list of films will include movies that were initially selected for several sections of the Official Selection. Films that are considered for the label have a release in the works between June and next May. Other rumored filmmakers accepting the Cannes 2020 label include Francois Ozon’s Ete 85 and Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s Memoria.
It was announced in March that the Cannes 2020 had been postponed due to the global pandemic. The festival is known to launch a film’s theatrical run as well as its presence on the festival circuit and during awards seasons. Even with the lack of a physical festival this year, some of its selection of films are expected to turn up at awards ceremonies and other international festivals, except for the Venice Film Festival, which announced in April they were moving forward with their planned events in September with no Cannes collaboration. Venice has reportedly scooped high-profile projects including Nanni Moretti’s Tre Piani and Maiwenn’s DNA.

Cannes is also expected to spotlight on filmmakers who are on the rise globally this year, such as Pascual Sisto’s John And The Hole, Danielle Arbid’s Passion Simple, Gia Coppola’s Mainstream, and Charlène Favier’s Slalom.
Publicists, distributors, and sales agents will play a key part in screening the films for targeted press and buyers in the run-up to the festival circuit later this fall without a physical or virtual Cannes festival.
