Sony has not made an official comment about updating Bloodborne for the PlayStation 5, so some fans went and did the opposite. The fan-led Bloodborne PlayStation 1-era demake, dubbed Bloodborne PSX, has been in the works for quite some time now and has finally gotten a release date. It will be coming out for free on January 31, 2022 on PC.
The game’s coder, Lilith Walther, who goes by b0tster on Twitter, tweeted out the release date trailer, which is posted below. The trailer shows gameplay captured within the title’s introductory hours and will be recognizable to those who have played FromSoftware’s PS4 original. And the trailer only contains bits from the early sections because the full release will just have up to the first two bosses. However, don’t expect an exact recreation because Walther said she wanted to “change things to emulate PS1 design sensibilities due to hardware restrictions and cultural differences back then as well.”

The project originally started in 2017 and then was halted before being fully restarted in January 2021. Walther has been open about the project, sharing development secrets on her Twitter account, Curious Cat page, YouTube page, and the game’s Discord server. She’s talked about how she used Solid Snake’s model from Metal Gear Solid and Irvine’s character model from Final Fantasy VIII as references for the Hunter in Bloodborne PSX, how texture mapping works to make it look like a PS1 game, the addition of a double-barrel shotgun, how viral mockups of the game inspired her to make it, and more.
