It has been nearly a year since the simultaneous theatrical and HBO Max release of Mortal Kombat, and now Deadline brings word that New Line Cinema is in the process of developing the sequel to the action-fantasy film. Ahead of Disney+’s long-awaited Moon Knight series, head writer Jeremy Slater has officially signed on to pen the untitled project.

Mortal Kombat 2 will again be based on Midway Games’ best-selling video game franchise. Plot details about its story are still being kept under wraps. It is also still unclear if the first film’s cast will be reprising their roles or not. However, in a previous interview, Sub-Zero actor Joe Taslim confirmed that his contract includes options for him to return as the ice ninja for four additional films.
The 2021 film featured a diverse international cast that includes Joe Taslim as Sub Zero; Ludi Lin as Liu Kang; Jessica McNamee as Sonya Blade; Josh Lawson as Kano; Tadanobu Asano as Raiden; Mehcad Brooks as Jackson “Jax” Bridges; Chin Han as Shang Tsung; Hiroyuki Sanada as Scorpion; Max Huang as Kung Lao; Sisi Stringer as Mileena; and Lewis Tan as Cole Young.

Mortal Kombat was directed by Simon McQuoid from a screenplay written by Greg Russo and Dave Callaham. It was produced by McQuoid, Todd Garner, E. Bennett Walsh, and James Wan.
Despite receiving mixed reviews from critics and only earning a worldwide gross of over $80 million due to the pandemic, the film was able to become one of HBO Max’s most-successful film debut ever.
