You might be surprised to find that some of the best crime movies currently have a home on Netflix, as the catalog has looked a little slim in recent years. Fortunately, Netflix seems committed to staying competitive with HBO, especially with another industry merger on the horizon. If you’re looking for a crime movie to queue up, the site has plenty to offer from across the genre. Here are just a few of the best crime movies currently streaming on Netflix.
What are the best crime movies on Netflix?
These are just a few of our top picks. There are plenty of other great titles, plus a few more coming to Netflix towards the end of the month.
The Untouchables (1987)
Directed by Brian De Palma, The Untouchables is a classic 1980s gangster movie that chronicles law enforcement’s battle against organized crime during Prohibition. Kevin Costner stars as Eliot Ness, a Treasury agent determined to bring the notorious gangster, Al Capone (a fantastic Robert de Niro), to justice. Ness assembles a small but mighty team, including Sean Connery in an Oscar-winning supporting role as seasoned mentor Jim Malone, to take on the seemingly untouchable crime empire in Chicago.
American Psycho (2000)
We’re more than a little curious to see what Luca Guadagnino brings to the table with the upcoming version, especially considering how iconic the original American Psycho already is. Not to mention, it’s hard to imagine anyone stepping into the role quite like Christian Bale did. In this perfectly distilled snapshot of early-2000s excess, directed by Mary Harron and adapted from Bret Easton Ellis’s novel, Bale gives us a chilling performance as Patrick Bateman, a Wall Street executive whose polished exterior and ritualistic self-care routine (skin care, juice, abs) mask a narcissistic, psychopathic serial killer. Despite the amount of blood splatter, it’s ultimately a wildly entertaining, biting satire of consumerism and masculinity.
Heat (1995)
Now this is a crime film if ever there was one. It’s also one of the best action movies of all time, with one of the most legendary shootouts ever put to screen — stacked with some of the most legendary actors to match. Is this hyping it up enough? The film hinges on the face-off between a Los Angeles Police Robbery-Homicide detective, played by Al Pacino, and a career criminal, played by Robert De Niro. The two men on opposite sides of the law are, in many ways, more alike than either would care to admit. Backing them up is a stellar supporting cast, including Val Kilmer, Ashley Judd, and Diane Venora. Now is as good a time as any with the sequel on the horizon.
Prisoners (2013)
More of a thriller than your typical crime movie, Prisoners launched Denis Villeneuve into the Hollywood A-list of directors. The film’s story begins with the sudden disappearance of two young girls on Thanksgiving Day, sending shockwaves through their families and community. As a determined but methodical Detective Loki (Jake Gyllenhaal) works the case, one father (Hugh Jackman), driven by desperation and distrust in the system, takes matters into his own hands after the police release the primary suspect, the driver of the vehicle seen near where the girls disappeared.
BlackKklansman (2018)
Directed by Spike Lee and adapted from Ron Stallworth’s autobiography, BlacKkKlansman stars John David Washington as Ron Stallworth, a Black rookie cop in the Colorado Springs Police Department. Fed up with his assignment in the record room, Ron makes one heck of a move when he calls the president of the Colorado chapter of the Ku Klux Klan and expresses interest in joining. In a ridiculous, hilarious undercover operation to stop an attack, Stallworth’s fellow detective, Flip Zimmerman (Adam Driver), begins infiltrating the chapter in person while Stallworth makes calls over the phone. The comedy shifts as the undercover operation becomes increasingly dangerous. Equal parts hilarious and harrowing, the film won the Academy Award for Best Adapted Screenplay, making the film Spike Lee’s first competitive Oscar win.
The Irishman (2019)
Another Scorsese film on the list, The Irishman, separates itself from The Wolf of Wall Street as much as possible in both tone and style. The movie takes us to the 1950s, where truck driver Frank Sheeran (Robert De Niro) gets involved with the mob family, led by Russell Bufalino (Joe Pesci). He climbs the ranks and ends up working for the infamous Jimmy Hoffa (Al Pacino). The Irishman also brings together the legends of Scorsese’s mob films, including Robert De Niro, Al Pacino, Joe Pesci, and Harvey Keitel.
The Devil All The Time (2020)
The Devil All The Time has more crimes than we can count in this article. It just seems to be the way of things for this gritty, Appalachian gothic. Antonio Campos’ adaptation of Donald Ray Pollack’s novel is a sprawling film that follows multiple, interconnected characters and storylines, all troubled by cycles of violence. We’ve got corrupt cops, predatory preachers, serial killers, and abusive parents, just to name a few of the figures you’ll see. The film is disturbing on multiple levels, and the performances are outstanding. The cast includes Tom Holland, Robert Pattinson, Bill SkarsgĂ„rd, Riley Keough, Jason Clarke, and Sebastian Stan.
Watcher (2022)
First impulse said this was released only a few years ago, but with the start of 2026, that’s no longer true. Still, it’s been an overlooked film, but it should well be at the forefront of any crime enthusiast’s watchlist. This serial killer thriller is genuinely unsettling to watch.
A husband and wife move to Bucharest just as news breaks of a string of local murders. Soon, the wife begins to sense she’s being followed, though surveillance footage never quite confirms her fears. Things escalate when she becomes convinced a man in the apartment across from hers is watching her through the window. This one gives off strong Rear Window vibes while fully embracing its Eastern European atmosphere. Watcher premiered at Sundance in 2021, where it won the Grand Jury Prize.
The Good Nurse (2022)
Like Watcher, we’re not quite sure why this one stayed relatively quiet in terms of audience buzz. In this true-crime drama, Jessica Chastain plays an ICU nurse who befriends a fellow nurse (Eddie Redmayne) who also happens to be a serial killer responsible for the deaths of hundreds of patients. While it’s very different from what we typically think of when we imagine a serial killer movie, The Good Nurse has everything you’d want from a crime film. Chastain’s character risks everything to help put this man behind bars and expose the institutional failures that allowed it all to happen in the first place.
Knives Out: Wake Up the Dead Man (2025)
If you liked the first two Benoit Blanc movies, this should be right up your alley. And if you liked the first but couldn’t make it through the first ten minutes of the second, this one might still win you over. Josh O’Connor plays a priest sent to a parish under the leadership of a monsignor who is as divisive as he is powerful. When the monsignor turns up dead, suspicion quickly falls on the new priest, who has made no secret of his dislike for the man. Enter Benoit Blanc, who teams up with the young priest to unravel the mystery.
