Best Crime Movies on Prime Video (February 2026)

Best Prime Crime Movies

Crime is one of those genres that can be more than just heists, mob activity, or procedural investigations. While other streaming platforms might offer more overall, Prime Video can still hold its own thanks to the sheer variety within the genre. Here are some of the best crime movies currently streaming on Prime Video.

What are the best crime movies on Prime Video?

If you’re looking for a streaming platform with all of Scorsese or Cronenberg, Prime Video unfortunately isn’t it. Prime does, however, offer a solid selection of crime films if you’re willing to expand your understanding of what the genre can be. Here are some of the best, chosen for both personal taste and critical acclaim.

Memento (2000)

Christopher Nolan’s Memento (from a script by Jonathan Nolan) was one of those movies that genuinely broke our brains back in the day, well before Nolan would go on to make Inception. The film centers on Leonard (Guy Pearce), who is tracking down his wife’s killer. That quest is complicated by the fact that Leonard suffers from anterograde amnesia. He can’t remember details of his life before the accident, nor can he form new memories.

As you might expect from Nolan, this is a twisty maze of plot and structure. Aside from Harold Pinter’s 1983 film Betrayal — adapted from his play of the same name — telling a story backwards wasn’t a structure commonly seen in film. Hand that idea to the Nolan brothers and make it even more convoluted, and where you end up by the end of the movie is never where you expect to be. Memento is fantastic, and well worth a watch or a rewatch if it’s been a minute.

12 Angry Men (1957)

For a dose of procedural drama, 12 Angry Men isn’t really about the crime itself so much as it is about doubt, deliberation, and the possibility of vindication for the accused. Directed by Sidney Lumet, the film takes place almost entirely inside a jury room during the closing arguments of a murder trial where a teenager stands accused of killing his father. The twelve men are tasked with deciding the fate of the inner-city teen, whose life hangs in the balance of the verdict.  What initially appears to be an open-and-shut case unravels as one juror (Henry Fonda) insists on taking the time to talk things through, even against the pressure of the other jurors.

The Handmaiden (2016)

Park Chan-wook’s The Handmaiden is the intersection of probably four genres. It’s a revenge thriller, a love story, and a twisty crime thriller. It’s also violent, erotic, perverse, and beautiful. You’ll want to remember Chan-wook’s other films, particularly the Vengeance Trilogy, to know what you’re getting into. You’ll also know this film is in the hands of an artist at the peak of his career. This film is sometimes cited as his best, but we’ll let you be the judge. You can add his latest film, No Other Choice, to the list of contenders for that nomination.

The Handmaiden is set in the 1930s in Japanese-occupied Korea. A Korean con-man (Ha Jung-woo) takes on the identity of a wealthy count and plans to marry a Japanese heiress (Kim Min-hee) to a vast inheritance. Upon marriage, he plans to have her committed to an asylum so he can make off with the money. The conman enlists the help of an orphaned pickpocket (Kim Tae-ri) to play the part of a maid in his elaborate scheme.

Die Hard (1988)

While it’s technically categorized as an action thriller, we’re more than happy to include Die Hard on a best-of crime list. Terrorism is, after all, a crime any time of year — and especially at Christmas. Bruce Willis stars as John McClane, a New York City police officer visiting Los Angeles to reconnect with his estranged wife and daughters during the holidays. He meets his wife at her office Christmas party, held at the super cool headquarters of the company she works for.

The festive evening is abruptly derailed when a group of terrorists under the orders of Hans Gruber (Alan Rickman) takes over the building and holds everyone inside hostage. What they don’t realize is that one of the partygoers is an off-duty cop who knows the building better than they do. Yippie-ki-yay.

Le Samouraï (1967)

To offset the explosive action of the pick above, our next entry is in every way the epitome of the crime genre. This neo-noir crime thriller belongs on every classic cinema watchlist. If you haven’t seen it yet, we’d recommend bumping it straight to the top. It’s a monumental achievement in filmmaking, and a pristine showcase of director Jean-Pierre Melville’s strengths before a single word is spoken. Often cited as the most important French crime film ever made, Le Samouraï is essential viewing. If you consider yourself a cinephile and haven’t seen it, it’s time to fix that.

Alain Delon stars as Jeff Costello, the perfect hitman. He’s cool, meticulous, and composed. He’s got a trenchcoat, he’s got his tipped hat. His routines are precise, and he doesn’t make mistakes. That is, until a job goes wrong when a female piano player (Cathy Rosier) witnesses him commit a murder at a nightclub. Before he can tie up that loose end, Costello is arrested. Although he’s released when Cathy refuses to identify him, the damage is done. Now watched by the police and targeted by those who hired him, Costello finds himself hunted from all sides.

How we picked the best crime movies on Prime Video

We narrowed down our choices based on personal taste and critical accolades. The films we chose also showcase the variety of the crime movie genre.

Morena Baccarin on Why The Wrecking Crew’s Jonny & Valentina Don’t Get Back Together

Morena Baccarin recently opened up about her role in 2026’s action movie The Wrecking Crew, and why her and Jason Momoa’s characters’ relationship was flipped on its head.

What did Morena Baccarin say about her and Jason Momoa’s on-screen romance?

Speaking to ComingSoon in a recent interview, Baccarin (who plays Valentina in the movie) was asked about subverting the relationship trope between action stars. In the film, Valentina is the calm, cool, and collected one, while Momoa‘s Jonny is chasing after her constantly after the pair breaks up.

According to Baccarin, the pair of actors worked hard to cultivate that, and she believes that, at the end of the day, they still don’t end up together.

“We really worked, myself and Jason, on the relationship with these two, and like, it was very important to find moments to really make it specific, like what they’ve been through, where they’re going, what’s happening. I felt it was really important that she does not get back together with him now. Like it became a little bit like, you don’t know if it’s gonna happen,” said Baccarin.

“But like in my mind, I do not get back together with him, and I had to play that all the way through. And so in these moments, even when I kiss him, it’s like an anger kiss, you know? It’s like, ‘Oh, we’ve been through this crazy thing together.’ So, like all those moments and things came out of really deepening the relationship.”

The Wrecking Crew is directed by Ángel Manuel Soto (Blue Beetle), from a script written by Jonathan Tropper. Alongside Baccarin and Momoa, The Wrecking Crew also stars Dave Bautista, Claes Bang, Temuera Morrison, Jacob Batalon, Frankie Adams, Miyavi, Stephen Root, Hugo Borich, Sean Meehan, Joshua Hamill, Maia Kealoha, Mark R. Black, David Hekili Kenui Bell, Lydia Peckham, Roimata Fox, and Branscombe Richmond.

Bautista had a busy 2025, starring in In the Lost Lands, Afterburn, and Trap House. Up next for him is a role in The Legend of Aang: The Last Airbender, Alpha Gang, and Road House 2. As for Momoa, he’ll next star in Supergirl as Lobo, Street Fighter as Blanka, and will also reprise his role as Duncan Idaho in the upcoming Dune: Part Three.

The Wrecking Crew is now available to watch on Prime Video.

God of War Game Actor Reprises Role in Prime Video Show, More Cast Revealed

God of War main characters.

Amazon MGM Studios has officially enlisted three new cast members to join Prime Video’s upcoming live-action God of War series. It is based on PlayStation‘s popular action fantasy video game franchise, which first launched in 2005.

“It follows father and son Kratos and Atreus as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human,” reads the official logline.

Who is all joining the God of War TV show cast?

Alastair Duncan (Taggart), Jeff Gulka (The X-Files), and Danny Woodburn (The Witcher) have been tapped to star in the God of War series, which is now in pre-production in Vancouver. Duncan will actually be reprising his role as Mimir, a character he originally voiced in the God of War and God of War Ragnarök video games. As for Gulka and Woodburn, they are set to play the respective roles of Sindri and Brok.

Listed below are the three new characters’ official descriptions:

  • Mimir (Duncan) is a cheery fellow from Celtic lands with an expansive intellect, a quick wit, and a good head on his shoulders. Never at a loss for words, Mimir is the self-described “Smartest Man in the World”. He served as an advisor to Odin the All-Father, who ultimately banished Mimir to confinement in the trunk of a tree, forever cut off from the people he loves and anything that could nourish his mind. In the wake of his banishment, Mimir seeks atonement for the terrible deeds he committed in the All-Father’s name.
  • Sindri (Gulka) is a renowned dwarven blacksmith whose incredible weaponry is sought after across the realms. Neurotic, helpful, and extremely germaphobic, Sindri is the complete opposite of his cranky, foul-mouthed brother and business partner, Brok.
  • Brok (Woodburn) is a legendary dwarven blacksmith who was alienated from his community when he helped build a super-weapon. He is brash, irreverent, and gruff – the complete opposite of his uptight brother and fellow blacksmith, Sindri, with whom he has a contentious relationship. Gamers will know Brok as the beloved weapons dealer with an unrivaled artistry for creative, foul-mouthed curses.

The Norse mythology-themed series will be written and executive-produced by showrunner Ronald D. Moore. The new cast members will be joining previously announced stars Ryan Hurst (Sons of Anarchy) as Kratos, Max Parker (Boots) as Heimdall, Mandy Patinkin (The Princess Bride) as Odin, and Ólafur Darri Ólafsson (Severance) as Thor. Emmy winner Frederick E.O. Toye has signed on to direct the first two episodes.

Executive producers are Maril Davis, Cory Barlog, Naren Shankar, Matthew Graham, Asad Qizilbash, Jeff Ketcham, Hermen Hulst, Roy Lee, and Brad Van Arragon. Joe Menosky, Marc Bernardin, Tania Lotia, and Ben McGinnis. It is a production by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Tall Ship Productions. Ahead of its debut, it has also been confirmed that the adaptation is already set to return for a second season.

Peacock Loses $500+ Million Despite New Subscriber Milestone

Despite a rise in subscribers, Peacock lost more than $500 million last quarter.

What is the update on Peacock?

Comcast, which owns the Peacock streaming service, announced its financial results for the fourth quarter earlier today. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the company had a loss of $552 million, compared to a $372 million loss  in the “year-ago period.”

The article states that Comcast “put the higher Peacock loss down in part to the launch of the NBA and an exclusive NFL game.”

It continues, “Due to its sports and entertainment lineup, Peacock posted $1.6 billion in total revenue, up from $1.3 billion the year-ago quarter. The streamer recorded 44 million paying subscribers, compared with 41 million at the end of the third quarter and 36 million a year ago, the company said Thursday.”

Comcast CFO Jason Armstrong said that Peacock’s losses are expected to “meaningfully improve again” in 2026. CEO Brian Roberts also addressed why the company hasn’t made any significant move to buy Warner Bros. Discovery, a purchase that is being heavily pursued by Netflix and Paramount.

“In terms of Warner Bros., what can you say, it’s still underway, obviously. We saw an opportunity to see if we could build value for Comcast shareholders, looking at their international reach, and would have been additive,” Roberts said. But once it looked like all-cash, we were just not interested in these values stretching our balance sheet to do something like that.”

“…A lot of companies are (asking) what does this mean to me? And there’s a lot of conversations on whether there are opportunities to build value, and we’re always open to that. So we’re looking at ways to creatively compete, succeed and go into a part of the business that is perhaps not the same everybody else and I think we’re doing a great job of that.”

4 MCU Movies & Shows to Watch on Disney+ Before Wonder Man

4 MCU Movies & Shows to Watch on Disney+ Before Wonder Man

There may be a few MCU projects that fans of the franchise will want to rewatch before tuning into Wonder Man.

Marvel Television’s Wonder Man will be available to stream on Disney+ later today. Created by Destin Daniel Cretton and Andrew Guest, the show stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as Simon Williams/Wonder Man, while Ben Kingsley also reprises his Trevor Slattery MCU role.

The synopsis for the show reads, “Aspiring Hollywood actor Simon Williams is struggling to get his career off the ground. During a chance meeting with Trevor Slattery, an actor whose biggest roles may be well behind him, Simon learns legendary director Von Kovak is remaking the superhero film Wonder Man. These two actors at opposite ends of their careers doggedly pursue life-changing roles in this film as audiences get a peek behind the curtain of the entertainment industry.”

What MCU projects should you watch before Wonder Man?

Before starting Wonder Man, Marvel fans will want to go back to 2013’s Iron Man 3, directed by Shane Black, as that was the first official introduction of Trevor Slattery. Trevor is a key player in Wonder Man, and he’s been given quite a character arc over the past 13 years. Witnessing all of it and understanding who Trevor truly is starts at Iron Man 3.

Following that, there’s the All Hail the King short film that was released in 2014. Just a brief 14 minutes in length, it bridges the gap between Iron Man 3 and Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.

It should be no surprise, then, that the next recommended viewing title is Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings. Not only does it once again feature Trevor, but Shang-Chi is also directed by Cretton, who is doing Spider-Man: Brand New Day next — meaning, there might be some more synergy coming between all these projects.

Speaking of Spider-Man, the last Marvel Studios project to check out before Wonder Man is Spider-Man: No Way Home. While the Department of Damage Control (DODC) is first introduced in Spider-Man: Homecoming, No Way Home offers the first look at where this storyline may be headed. As in, the DODC becoming major MCU villains. No Way Home also introduces Arian Moayed’s P. Cleary, who returns in Wonder Man, to the MCU.

Of course, this is Wonder Man’s first appearance in the MCU, meaning there’s no catch-up required when it comes to the show’s actual main protagonist. Where Wonder Man will show up next in the MCU is unclear at this time, as no formal announcements have yet been made about Abdul-Mateen returning to this role.

Why The Odyssey’s Star-Studded Cast Could Actually Work Against the Movie

Why The Odyssey’s Star-Studded Cast Could Actually Work Against the Movie

Everyone is excited to see The Odyssey, but the forthcoming Christopher Nolan movie could be suffering from one big problem.

The Odyssey will be released in United States theaters this summer from Universal Pictures. Written and directed by Nolan, the movie is based on Homer’s ancient Greek epic.

The star-studded cast of The Odyssey includes Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Jon Leguizamo, Himseh Patel, Mia Goth, Elliot Page, Travis Scott, Bill Irwin, and many more.

What is the potential problem with The Odyssey?

While it’s intriguing to see so many people cast in Nolan’s movie, the film may be overstuffed to a point where it becomes a problem. The story largely focuses on Damon’s Odysseus character, meaning he’s likely going to be on the screen more than anyone. Not too much has been revealed about the plot as of yet, meaning it’s tough to say how much screen time everyone else is going to get; however, there are so many recognizable actors involved that it could prove to be distracting.

This isn’t exactly new for Nolan — he often assembles a huge cast whenever he’s working on something. Sometimes, that works out really well; Robert Downey Jr. was able to disappear into the role of Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer, which won him an Academy Award. Yet, in the same movie, you also have actors like Rami Malek and Dane DeHaan show up for just a quick scene, and their presence doesn’t add much except that it makes everyone stop and say, “Hey, I recognize that person.”

Oppenheimer isn’t necessarily hurt by this; it’s still a great movie. And The Odyssey could still very well be great. However, this also is set right after the events of the Trojan War, meaning this takes place way in the past. And if The Odyssey does the same thing as Oppenheimer, where a celebrity shows up and then leaves after three minutes, it could wind up feeling like a collection of cameos rather than a coherent story that audiences can get fully invested in.

The Odyssey arrives on July 17, 2026.

One of HBO‘s most controversial and Emmy-nominated shows is finally returning tonight with an all-new season. The first episode of Real Time with Bill Maher Season 24 officially premieres tonight at 10:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max.

What do we know about HBO Max’s Real Time with Bill Maher show?

Real Time with Bill Maher is executive-produced by Maher, Sheila Griffiths, Dean Johnsen, Billy Martin, Marc Gurvitz, and Chris Kelly. Last January 7, Warner Bros. Discovery announced that HBO had renewed the show for two additional seasons, extending its run through 2028. It is produced by Matt Wood, with Paul Casey serving as the director.

“Allowing Maher to offer his unique perspective on contemporary issues, the show continues with its opening monologue, one-on-one interviews with notable guests, roundtable discussions with panelists, and its signature ‘New Rules,'” reads the logline.

The weekly hour-long series has been airing on HBO since 2003. Throughout its more than two-decade run, the talk show has received 22 Primetime Emmy Award nominations, including Outstanding Variety Series. Before hosting the show, Maher previously hosted a similar show on ABC, titled Politically Incorrect.

Recently, Maher’s latest HBO comedy special, titled Is Anyone Else Seeing Things?, earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television. The said special made its debut over a year ago, and is still available for streaming on HBO Max. Before this, Maher had already starred in 12 solo specials for the network, with the first one airing in 1995.

DC’s Biggest Villain Gets Surprising DCU Casting Update

Darkseid’s casting in the DCU has received a surprising update.

Darkseid will appear in the forthcoming Mister Miracle animated series, which is part of James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DCU. The Warner Bros. Animation and DC Studios show is based on the Eisner Award-winning comic book series by Tom King and Mitch Gerads. King serves as the showrunner for Mister Miracle.

What did Tom King say about the DCU’s Darkseid casting?

Appearing on The Brave and the Boys, King discussed the casting for the Mister Miracle show. He didn’t reveal any specific names; however, according to his comments, Darkseid’s casting may end up surprising a lot of fans.

“There were some people who nailed it, and were exactly — like, oh my god, that is Scott, that is Barta,” King said. “And then there were some people where it was, that’s not what I expected, but that is Darkseid. It ran the gauntlet from — I mean, I love this book, I love it to death, and I wasn’t going to settle for anything less than perfect — but it ran the gauntlet from perfect to just beyond.”

How big a presence Darkseid, who is generally regarded as being one of the biggest villains in DC Comics, has in the DCU after the Mister Miracle show remains to be seen. Having said that, Gunn previously stated, per IGN, that using the character as “the big bad” in the DCU “right now is not necessarily the thing.”

He added, “For a lot of reasons, because Zack [Snyder] did it so cool in his way, and because of Thanos in Marvel.”

A premiere date for the Mister Miracle show has not yet been announced. A portion of the description reads, “No prison can hold him. No trap can contain him. He is Scott Free, the worldwide celebrity sensation known as Mister Miracle, and he is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. But can he pull off the ultimate trick – and escape death itself? Something has gone horribly wrong with the perfect life that Scott and his warrior wife Big Barda have built for themselves on Earth. With war raging between their home worlds of Apocalypse and New Genesis, Scott’s cruel adoptive father, Darkseid, seems to have finally captured the Anti-Life Equation – the ultimate weapon that will give Darkseid total dominance over the universe.”

2 Supernatural Stars Would Love to Reprise Batman Roles in DCU

Supernatural Season 12 Streaming: Watch & Stream Online via Netflix
Credits: The CW

Supernatural stars Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins recently reunited for The Road So Far… The Road Ahead convention in Las Vegas this past weekend, where both made it clear that they are ready for James Gunn to bring them back as their respective Batman characters.

What did Jensen Ackles and Misha Collins say about the DCU?

Ackles remains a popular pick for Bruce Wayne/Batman in Gunn’s DC Universe. The actor has experience in the role, having previously played the character in animation. He voiced the Dark Knight in the Tomorrowverse series of DC Animated Movies, appearing in Batman: The Long Halloween (2021), Legion of Super-Heroes, Justice League: Warworld (both 2023), and Justice League: Crisis on Infinite Earths (2024).

As for Collins, he was a series regular on the short-lived CW series Gotham Knights. He portrayed Gotham City District Attorney Harvey Dent, who in the series finale is burned with acid and becomes Two-Face.

Per ComicBookMovie, both actors discussed reprising their DC roles during the convention’s Supernatural panel, with Ackles stating, “There are probably a few [dream roles]. Yes, somebody up here yelled Batman. Yes, that is certainly a dream role. I mean, I’ve got a few go-tos: Batman, Wyatt Earp, Robin Hood, that kind of stuff.”

Collins dove a bit deeper with his response, noting first that Sebastian Stan had recently been cast to play Harvey Dent in Matt Reeves’ forthcoming The Batman Part II.

“Playing Two-Face was a dream role. Sebastian Stan just got cast as Two-Face in the next Batman movie, which I did not not feel jealous about,” the actor joked. “I was like, ‘Grrr,’ and if he were to meet with an accident and they needed to find . . . I’d certainly free up my schedule to make myself available.”

Check out Ackles and Collins’ entire Supernatural panel below:

Ackles and Collins still have a chance to play Batman and Two-Face again, as neither role has been cast yet in the DCU. Unfortunately for both actors, DC Studios seems to be taking its time with developing The Brave and the Bold, with Gunn recently stating that fans should not expect any major updates for the movie until The Batman Part II is finished.

In the meantime, audiences can stream Gotham Knights and select Tomorrowverse movies on HBO Max.

Christopher Judge, who voices the character of Kratos in the PlayStation game, has reacted to the live-action casting of Ryan Hurst as the God of War protagonist. The God of War live-action TV series has been in development at Prime Video, with showrunner Ronald D. Moore. Before him, Rafe Judkins was working on the show, but he exited as the studio decided to take a different creative direction.

Christopher Judge happily passes Kratos’ mantle for live-action God of War series

The Stargate SG-1 actor, who voices the legendary God of War character Kratos, has some words for Ryan Hurst. The latter was recently cast in the live-action show.

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Christopher Judge reacted to the casting update. He wrote, “Congrats Ryan!!!! You’re gonna be great… BOI !!!”

In the casting update, the developer of the God of War game, Santa Monica Studio, stated, “Congratulations to Ryan Hurst (@RamboDonkeyKong) who will be stepping into the role of Kratos for the upcoming God of War live action series! We’re excited to see his take on Kratos as he joins the legendary ranks of T.C. Carson and Christopher Judge, who have each shaped this character in unforgettable ways.”

Notably, while Hurst is playing the role of Kratos in live-action, he voiced the character of Thor in God of War Ragnarök and faced off against the former. Following the announcement of his playing Kratos, he took to Instagram and posted an image of God of War on the screen.

Hurst noted, “Used to play as him. Now I get to be him. Grateful to pick up the axe, and honored by the fans who made this story legendary.”

Recently, Teresa Palmer has also joined the series as Phoebe or Sif, Thor’s wife, according to a report by Deadline. However, Amazon has not commented on it as of writing.

Reboot of 48-Year-Old Sci-Fi Series in Works From The Last of Us Director

Reboot of 48-Year-Old Sci-Fi Series in Works From The Last of Us Director

The popular British television series, Blake’s 7, is all set to get a reboot from Peter Hoar, the director of HBO’s renowned post-apocalyptic series, The Last of Us. Created by Terry Nation, the series broke new ground in British TV history, pushing the bounds of science fiction. It follows Roj Blake and his group of rebels. They go against the authoritarian Terran Federation, which colonizes numerous planets and Earth. The sci-fi show originally aired on the BBC between 1978 and 1981.

Peter Hoar is developing Blake’s 7 reboot

According to a new report, the director of The Last of Us is working on the reboot of the legendary British TV programme Blake’s 7.

Per Deadline, Peter Hoar is joining hands with the executive producer of A Good Girl’s Guide To Murder, Matthew Bouch, and Jason Haigh-Ellery, the executive producer of More Than This.

Hoar gained immense praise and fame after he directed the episode “Long, Long Time” from The Last of Us Season 1. The outlet also states that while he is pumped to take the director’s chair for the reboot of this 1978 show, the trio is looking to release it on the BBC.

Talking about working on the reboot, Hoar said in a statement, “The Blake’s 7 story is legendary because they were given a ‘softly softly’ slot that was intended for police drama with a budget intended for one big set and a few location shoots. At the time, it felt like it meant something. Those shows got into my veins. I could tell they didn’t have money, but I was able to compartmentalize and enjoy the ride knowing that the sets wobbled.”

Bouch also commented, “We’re driven by our passions but also seeing that there is a gap in the market in the UK – particularly with the well-publicized dropping off of Doctor Who – for genre-based British IP. We are looking to the international market and seeing if there is a way of dovetailing that British low-budget sensibility with international markets. We know in the U.S. there’s a big contraction, and we all need to think about finding ways to make things more economical.”

Meanwhile, more details regarding the reboot’s cast, plot, and release window are expected to be released in the near future.

Top Documentaries on Netflix (January 2026)

Best documentaries on Netflix

While we often live through the world of fiction when it comes to storytelling, the truth is sometimes even more compelling than make-believe. Seeing these stories brought to light through documentary filmmaking can be some of the most incredible viewing experiences we have. These are just a few of the top documentaries on Netflix.

What are the best documentaries on Netflix?

From true crime stories to profiles of remarkable individuals, to unbelievable stories of resilience under the most unimaginable circumstances, and even heartwarming tales of blossoming love, it’s impossible not to find something here that leaves you in shock, awe, or wonder. Some of these documentaries are feature-length films, some are shorts, and others are docuseries, but all are unforgettable.

13th (2016)

Nominated for an Oscar for Best Documentary Feature, 13th is directed by filmmaker Ava DuVernay and examines the American prison-industrial complex. The film traces its roots back to the enactment of the 13th Amendment, which formally ended slavery while leaving a critical exception: forced labor as punishment for a crime. 13th argues that slavery has continued in the United States through this loophole, contending that the nation’s prison system disproportionately targets and incarcerates African Americans.

Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution (2020)

This truly beautiful documentary takes us to a summer camp in the Catskills, where a group of teens with disabilities form bonds that would last a lifetime. At Camp Jened, these teens are given freedom and independence, something many of them had never seen before, especially considering the time. But most importantly, they found a sense of belonging. What none of them could have known at the time was that these friendships would eventually help spark a disability rights movement that would change the world. Crip Camp: A Disability Revolution was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature and was executive produced by Barack and Michelle Obama.

To Kill a Tiger (2022)

There’s no way to sugarcoat this. To Kill a Tiger is a difficult watch, but essential. This critically acclaimed documentary feature follows a humble father in rural India who refuses to stay silent after his 13-year-old daughter is brutally assaulted in a gang rape. In a society that pressures victims and their families into silence, his decision to pursue justice is an act of resistance and defiance to the systems that be.

The Last Dance (2020)

There are sports icons, and then there’s Michael Jordan, who exists on a level entirely his own. This miniseries takes us through his early life, meteoric rise to fame, and the cultural phenomenon of his time with the Chicago Bulls’ dynasty of the 1990s. The series includes archival footage with candid interviews, making this every bit as entertaining as you think it would be. But The Last Dance isn’t just about basketball — it’s about obsession and the cost of greatness.

Love on the Spectrum (2022)

Love on the Spectrum is an unscripted romantic documentary series that fills us with every ounce of fuzzy warmth. The series follows people on the autism spectrum as they navigate dating and the search for connection. It’s quietly touching, occasionally awkward — dating always is, even for neurotypical folks — and is genuinely heartwarming without ever feeling exploitative. While Love on the Spectrum might technically walk the line of reality television, it’s so much deeper than that. Our favorite thing about this docu-series is that it treats its subjects with real care.

The White Helmets (2016)

This Academy Award–winning short documentary focuses on the volunteer rescue workers known as the White Helmets, who risk their lives daily to save civilians in war-torn Syria. Amid constant danger and devastation, the film highlights small moments of humanity and hope. It’s a brief but powerful watch.

A Perfect Neighbor (2025)

From documentary filmmaker Geeta Gandbhir, A Perfect Neighbor chronicles a long-running dispute between neighbors that ultimately ended in the fatal shooting of Ajike Owens by her neighbor, Susan Lorincz, in Ocala, Florida. Through bodycam footage and interviews, the film closely examines the events leading up to and following the shooting. Winner of the Best Director award at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival, A Perfect Neighbor places conversations around prejudice, fear, and Stand Your Ground laws squarely at the center.

Chef’s Table (2015)

This long-running documentary series is simply a joy to watch. Each episode profiles a different world-class chef, exploring not just their food but the journey behind the auteur. It’s beautifully shot and often surprisingly emotional — we’ve watched more than a few episodes that have left us in tears. Running a restaurant is hard, and don’t believe anyone who’s suggested otherwise. While each episode is an ode to culinary achievement, it’s also about creativity and the discipline required to make it to the top. Even if you’re not particularly interested in food, Chef’s Table has a way of pulling you in. If you’ve made it through the seven seasons on Netflix and are hungry for more, Season 8 drops in April.

Cover-Up (2025)

One of Netflix’s more recent additions, Cover-Up focuses on a Pulitzer Prize–winning journalist who brought some of the most shocking government cover-ups in U.S. history into the light. The film revisits investigations into events like the My Lai Massacre in Vietnam and the torture committed by U.S. soldiers at Abu Ghraib during the Iraq War. This feature is meticulous and unsettling, and a great look into the power (and importance) of investigative journalism.

American Factory (2019)

At first glance, American Factory feels like a straightforward story about jobs returning to a struggling town. It’s a lot more than what it seems, though, as this Oscar-winning documentary takes us into the dynamics between American workers and their high-tech employers in the 21st century. Following the opening of a Chinese-owned factory in post-industrial Ohio, the initial hope sparked by new jobs slowly erodes as tensions rise between labor and management. The feature-length documentary film resists the urge to vilify anyone, instead presenting a deeply humanist picture of globalization and the people caught in its middle.

Our Planet (2019)

Narrated by David Attenborough, Our Planet is as breathtaking as documentaries come. The documentary series takes us across jungles, oceans, deserts, and polar ice caps to show the beauty of this remarkable world we live in. Of course, in addition to showcasing the natural world’s incredible beauty, it confronts the devastating impact of climate change. It’s awe-inspiring and sobering in equal measure.

How we picked the top documentaries on Netflix

There are many great ones currently available for streaming, so we narrowed our choices to documentary features and series that have received critical acclaim and audience response. We also tried to offer a mix across genres. Still, this is just a shot list of the best.
