Golden Globe winner Aaron Taylor-Johnson (Nosferatu, Nocturnal Animals) has officially signed on to star in his first major TV show with Netflix. It will be based on AndrĂ© Aciman’s bestselling 2017 novel, Enigma Variations.
What do we know about Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s new Netflix show?
Taylor-Johnson is set to play a man named Paul as he embarks on a globe-trotting tour of passion and romance spanning from his childhood in Italy to his adulthood in New York. The series adaptation of Enigma Variations will be written and executive-produced by A.K. Shuman (The Wheel of Time), with Oliver Hermanus (The History of Sound, Living) serving as its director. Executive producers are Michael Ellenberg and Lindsey Springer for Media Res, alongside Aciman and Monica Levinson.
“It tells the story of a man remade by the lovers who ignite and undo him over the course of ten transformative years,” reads the synopsis. “It’s an intimate yet sweeping portrait of masculinity, sexuality, and modern love — and in a world of endless choices, it asks the question: will we know when we’ve found the one?”
This marks Taylor-Johnson’s first major TV project in nearly two decades, after starring in the drama miniseries Nearly Famous and in the TV film Sherlock Holmes and the Baker Street Irregulars. The Kraven the Hunter star is no stranger to the romance genre, having previously appearing in 2008’s Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snogging and 2012’s Anna Karenina. He recently starred in last year’s horror thriller sequel 28 Years Later and the heist movie Fuze. Taylor-Johnson will next be seen in Robert Eggers’ Werwulf movie and Cary Joji Fukunaga’s crime thriller Blood on Snow.
