Hope 2 has received a massive update from its director, who teased plans for a sci-fi monster trilogy. Korean filmmaker Na Hong-jin‘s Hope came out earlier this month in theaters and is led by Hwang Jung-min and former Squid Game star Jung Ho-yeon.
Na Hong-jin has teased what fans can expect from Hope 2, following the events of the first part where the main character Bum-seok, played by Jung-min, was seen limping at the end while being severely injured.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, the director mentioned a darker setting for the sequel. “As I was developing the story, it got longer, and I realized I would need at least a sequel, or maybe three films, to tell the whole thing. The first film takes place entirely in the daylight, but the sun is setting as we get to the end, right? Well, this is a bit of a preview, but when night comes in part two, military backup is going to arrive.”
Teasing Bum-seok’s fate in Hope 2, he added, “he’s still alive and in the fight, right? Don’t be surprised if he crosses over to the North…”
Why Hope could be bigger than it first appears
Na Hong-jin hasn’t specifically mentioned this, yet it appears the Hope saga may expand its sci-fi monster story with a mind-boggling shift to North Korea, in some way or the other.
Released on September 9, 2026, the first part managed to get a solid reception from critics as well as the audience members. It currently holds an impressive Tomatometer and Popcornmeter score of 79% on Rotten Tomatoes.
If it has to turn into a trilogy, however, Hope 2 will have to become a big hit compared to its predecessor. That’s because the original hasn’t really generated strong impact at the box office. It has managed to earn just over $41 million so far, on a reported budget of $46 million.
Hope’s ensemble cast also features Zo In-sung, Eum Moon-suk, Michael Fassbender, Alicia Vikander, Taylor Russell, and Cameron Britton.
