Melissa McCarthy opens up about why Netflix‘s JonBenét Ramsey is so unique. Explaining why it is unlike other true crime projects, McCarthy said the upcoming show avoids a major reveal and instead focuses on the competing theories, the chaos of the investigation, and the lasting impact of the case.
While talking to Variety, she was asked whether The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey had a point of view about what happened. McCarthy said, “This is not a whodunit. It’s not like, ‘Ooh, there’s a big reveal!’ This is a character study of everyone who was caught in the undertow, and a look at all of us — as a civilization, really. Seeing that happen to a child, I think, breaks everybody.”
She continued, saying that the series shows “all these different theories.” McCarthy explained, “We do show all these different theories. They were all real working theories. Showing the chaos of it is something that we’ve not seen. It’s a new telling of it, because you’re like, ‘My God, is this really what was happening?’”

Netflix’s eight-part scripted limited series The Murder of JonBenét Ramsey explores the chaos surrounding the unsolved 1996 killing of six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey. Essentially, it features the chaotic media circus, intense police scrutiny, and devastating personal and public reckoning that followed the case.
As reported by Deadline, showrunner Richard LaGravenese structured the show to explore the case from multiple perspectives, including the Ramsey family, investigators, and the media, per sources, detailing how the tragedy deeply divided the nation and sparked decades of public speculation.
Per Netflix Tudum, JonBenét Ramsey was murdered in the basement of the family’s home in Boulder, Colorado. After a national media frenzy, nearly 30 years — and more than 21,016 tips, letters, and emails later — the killer has not been found.
The cast of the show includes McCarthy as Patsy Ramsey, Clive Owen as John Bennett Ramsey, Emily Mitchell as JonBenét, and Garrett Hedlund as Det. Steve Thomas, Alison Pill as Det. Linda Arndt, and Clifton Collins Jr. as Det. Tom Trujillo, Shea Whigham as Alex Hunter, Owen Teague as Shane Edwards, Angus Caldwell as Burke Ramsey, and Jaime Ray Newman as Amelia Hunt.
