Mike Mitchell to helm We’re Not From Here for Columbia Pictures

Columbia Pictures has acquired the rights to Geoff Rodkey’s sci-fi middle-grade novel We’re Not From Here from Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge Entertainment and has landed Mike Mitchell (The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part) to helm a film adaptation of the project, according to Deadline.

RELATED: The School for Good and Evil: Paul Feig to Direct Netflix Movie Adaptation

First published in 2019 by Crown Books, the New York Times bestselling novel follows a family of humans who has been living on a station on Mars after the destruction of Earth who decide to immigrate to an alien planet named Choom, where they find themselves struggling to adjust to life amongst the native race known as the Zhuri, who aren’t a fan of humankind and don’t like singing, comedy or any kind of emotion.

The film version, which will be adapted by Rodkey, will be a family-focused adventure blending live-action and animation, a venture Mitchell previously underwent in the critically tarnished Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked and The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie: Sponge Out of Water, on which he helmed the film’s live-action sequences.

Pick up the original novel here!

Gluck, who will produce the adaptation alongside Olive Bridge’s Jodi Hildebrand, has had a long-standing working relationship with Sony Pictures and their TV branch, delivering hits including 2009’s Fired Up!, 2010’s Easy A, 2011’s Friends with Benefits and 2018’s Peter Rabbit for the former while producing and co-creating The Michael J. Fox Show and The McCarthys in association with Sony TV.

In addition to being a New York Times bestselling author, Rodkey is well-known as an Emmy-nominated screenwriter of films and TV including Daddy Day Care, Politically Incorrect, RV, The Shaggy Dog and Good Luck Charlie, It’s Christmas!. His next novel, the suburban-apocalypse focused Lights Out in Lincolnwood, is set to hit shelves in summer 2021.

After making his directorial debut on the 1999 Rob Schneider-led comedy Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigalo and following it up with the holiday failure Surviving Christmas and Disney superhero hit Sky High, Mitchell would go on to focus on more animated fare with behind-the-scenes work at DreamWorks Animation on the Kung Fu Panda trilogy, Shrek franchise and Monsters vs. Aliens. His most recent works include the Oscar-nominated Trolls and The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part.

Script Changes Led Paramount to Bail on Killers of the Flower Moon

Script Changes Led Paramount to Bail on Killers of the Flower Moon

Following the recent news that Apple has partnered with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio to finance their upcoming Killers of the Flower Moon adaptation, The Hollywood Reporter brings word that it was script changes that ultimately led Paramount Pictures to pull back their investment in the film.

RELATED: Leonardo DiCaprio Eyeing Possible Role in Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up

While Apple covers the large budget, Paramount will still distribute the film in theaters worldwide before the movie lands on Apple TV+. The studio will avoid financial risk but faces “very limited upside.”

Paramount reportedly pulled back their funding for the film when Scorsese and DiCaprio revised the script and altered the star’s role. DiCaprio was originally supposed to be playing the good guy working for the developing FBI, but in the revised version, he would portray Robert De Niro’s nephew, torn between love and evil machinations of his uncle.

The outlet reports that a source shared Paramount felt the changes in the script made the film a “moody and less commercial character study,” calling it a “smaller scale; same budget” project.

Paramount was likely hoping they could convince the director and actor to revert back to their original script when they suggested to DiCaprio’s manager Rick Yorn to shop the project, but not only is Apple now covering the entire budget, they will also be the “creative studio” on the film.

Paramount will apparently pay marketing costs, though Apple will get its money back either from its share of the box office or “by making up any shortfall;”  Apple will also cover costs associated with developing the project. In turn, Paramount will receive a distribution fee based on the film’s box office performance.

Killers of the Flower Moon, written by Eric Roth (A Star is Born), is produced by Imperative Entertainment, who acquired the rights for the novel for $5 million, as well as Scorcese, Appian Way Productions and Sikelia Productions. It will be starring Oscar winner Leonardo DiCaprio with fellow Scorsese alum Robert De Niro.

Killers of the Flower Moon will mark DiCaprio and Scorcese’s seventh collaboration together after working on multiple Oscar-nominated and winning films beginning with 2002’s Gangs of New York followed by 2004’s The Aviator, which was the actor’s first Oscar-nominated performance with the director, 2006’s The Departed, 2010’s Shutter Island, 2013’s The Wolf of Wall Street and the 2015 short film The Audition.

Apple TV acquires Gal Gadot-led Hedy Lamarr series

After initially being set up at Showtime, the upcoming limited series centered on actress and inventor Hedy Lamarr starring Gal Gadot (Wonder Woman 1984) has moved to Apple TV+ with a straight-to-series order of eight episodes, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

RELATED: Gal Gadot Teases More Mature Diana in Wonder Woman 1984

The limited series was originally set to run on Showtime and has been in the works for nearly two years now, but after the cable network failed to give it a proper series order, the tech giant’s new streaming service acquired the project. The concept for the series stemmed from Gadot and her husband and producing partner Jason Varsano, who will executive produce via their banner Pilot Wave, alongside showrunner Sarah Treem (The Affair), Warren Littlefield (The Handmaid’s Tale) and Katie Robbins (The Last Tycoon).

Austrian-born Hedy Lamarr was a popular actress in the 1940s, starring in such films as Algiers, Boom Town, I Take This Woman, Comrade X, Come Live with Me and Samson and Delilah. However, she is most famous for her work as an inventor. During World War II she helped create a radio guidance system for allied torpedoes that utilized spectrum and frequency. Today, this same technology is used to enable Bluetooth and WiFi. At the age of 85, Lamarr passed away due to a heart disease in 2000.

POLL: What is the Best Director’s Cut?

POLL: What is the Best Director's Cut?

POLL: What is the Best Director’s Cut?

This month saw some exciting news for fans as the long-rumored Zack Snyder cut of Justice League was announced to be in development and set for a 2021 release on HBO Max! Though Snyder getting a second shot to cut the superhero blockbuster is a rare circumstance in Hollywood, he is certainly not the first filmmaker to have a separate cut of his film that differs drastically from the theatrical release. ComingSoon.net has compiled a list of some of the most iconic and creatively unique director’s cuts in film history and is asking our readers to vote on their favorite in the poll below!

RELATED: POLL RESULTS: What if the Oscars Were Held Tomorrow?

RELATED: POLL RESULTS: Which Upcoming Film Would You Pay For on VOD?

Films suffering from different cuts between a director and a studio is nothing new, with most re-releases or Blu-ray editions simply featuring an additional handful of jokes or action sequences, but there are a number of times when reshoots and edits cause a film to change drastically and with later cuts receiving warmer responses from critics and audiences alike. Some of the most notable include the director’s cut of 2003’s Daredevil, as well as Ridley Scott’s numerous cuts of Blade Runner, the Assembly Cut of Alien 3 more in line with director David Fincher’s vision, Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut and Kingdom of Heaven: Extended Director’s Cut.

Other specially released versions of the film may not necessarily change the story of a film in any major fashion, but add a unique style that feels more befitting of the project its attached to, with two of the most notable including black-and-white versions of Mad Max: Fury Road and Logan, both of which were received positively by viewers and the filmmakers.

Zack Snyder’s Justice League will reportedly cost around $20-30 million in order to properly finish the editing and visual effects of the director’s original vision. The original post-production crew is also expected to return along with the cast members to record additional dialogue for the cut. No new footage will be shot, however.

RELATED: HBO Max Reveals New Details on Green Lantern & Snyder Cut!

Fueled by the hero’s restored faith in humanity and inspired by Superman’s selfless act, Justice League sees Bruce Wayne enlist the help of his newfound ally, Diana Prince, to face an even greater enemy. Together, Batman and Wonder Woman work quickly to find and recruit a team of metahumans to stand against this newly awakened threat. But despite the formation of this unprecedented league of heroes—Batman, Wonder Woman, Aquaman, Cyborg and The Flash—it may already be too late to save the planet from an assault of catastrophic proportions.

Justice League, which features a screenplay from Chris Terrio from a story by Snyder and Terrio, stars Affleck as Batman, Cavill as Superman, Gadot as Wonder Woman, Momoa as Aquaman, Miller as The Flash, Fisher as Cyborg, Willem Dafoe as Nuidis Vulko, Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor, Jeremy Irons as Alfred Pennyworth, Diane Lane as Martha Kent, Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, with J.K. Simmons as Commissioner Gordon, and Amy Adams as Lois Lane.

Released in November 2017, the film earned mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike, praising the action and performances from Gadot and Miller while criticizing every other aspect of the film, namely the inconsistent tone that many fault Joss Whedon (The Avengers) for after taking over directorial duties from Snyder. With a large budget of $300 million and a break-even point of $750 million, the film is considered a box office bomb having grossed only $658 million.

HBO Max Acquires Exclusive Streaming Rights to Young Sheldon

HBO Max has acquired the exclusive U.S. subscription-video-on-demand rights to the hit comedy series Young Sheldon in a deal with Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution. HBO Max is also the streaming home of the entire library of The Big Bang Theory, the longest-running multicamera comedy in television history.

“We now feel like our Big Bang offering is complete,” said Kevin Reilly, chief content officer, HBO Max, president TNT, TBS, and TruTV. “We are so proud to be the home of this beloved franchise and the place where new and existing fans can learn about young Sheldon Cooper’s roots.”

RELATED: HBO Max Unveils Doom Patrol Season 2 Key Art

“In order for Sheldon Cooper to visit his younger self, he would need to manipulate spacetime. All you actually need is HBO Max,” said Young Sheldon creators/executive producers Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro. “We are so pleased that Young Sheldon will once again be reunited with his future self on HBO Max, and we are excited for fans, new and old, to be able to binge both The Big Bang Theory and Young Sheldon for the first time.”

Young Sheldon is currently the number-one comedy on network television with total viewers, Teens, and all key 25-54 demos. The series has averaged more than 11.4 million viewers per week during the 2019–20 season to date, according to Most Current ratings information from Nielsen, +34% more viewers than the next-largest comedy with total viewers.

For 12 years on The Big Bang Theory, audiences came to know the iconic, eccentric, and extraordinary Sheldon Cooper. The single-camera, half-hour comedy Young Sheldon gives viewers the chance to meet him in childhood, as he embarks on his innocent, awkward and hopeful journey toward the man he will become.

The series stars Iain Armitage as Young Sheldon, Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, with Annie Potts, and Jim Parsons as the voice of Sheldon.

For young Sheldon Cooper, it isn’t easy growing up in East Texas. Being a once-in-a-generation mind capable of advanced mathematics and science isn’t always helpful in a land where church and football are king. And while the vulnerable, gifted and somewhat naïve Sheldon deals with the world, his very normal family must find a way to deal with him. His father, George, is struggling to find his way as a high school football coach and as father to a boy he doesn’t understand. Sheldon’s mother, Mary, fiercely protects and nurtures her son in a town where he just doesn’t fit in. Sheldon’s older brother, Georgie, does the best he can in high school, but it’s tough to be cool when you’re in the same classes with your odd 9-year-old brother. Finally, there’s Sheldon’s twin sister, Missy, who sometimes resents all the attention Sheldon gets, but also remains the one person who can reliably tell Sheldon the truth.

CS Interview: Randall Wallace Talks Braveheart 25th Anniversary

CS Interview: Randall Wallace Talks Braveheart

CS Interview: Randall Wallace talks Braveheart 25th anniversary

Braveheart turned 25-years old this week, and to honor the occasion ComingSoon.net reached out to the film’s screenwriter, Randall Wallace, who was kind enough to talk about the Oscar-winning epic and share a few behind-the-scenes details you may not have known about. You can pre-order the new Braveheart 4K steelbook out on June 16 by clicking here!

Directed by Mel Gibson, who won an Academy Award for his efforts, Braveheart tells the sprawling legend of Scotland hero William Wallace, who takes up arms against the ruthless King Edward I of England; and inspires his fellow Scots to fight for their country’s freedom.

Released on May 24, 1995, Braveheart went on to amass over $200 million at the worldwide box office, and 10 Academy Award nominations, eventually winning five, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Sound Effects Editing, and Best Makeup.

Braveheart stars Mel Gibson, Sophie Marceau, Patrick McGoohan, Catherine McCormack, Angus Macfayden, and Brendan Gleeson.

ComingSoon.net: Ok, so just so you know, I’m a huge Braveheart fan. I saw it with my dad and remember just being blown away by the scope of it.

Wallace: Oh man, that’s music to my ears. That you saw it with your dad is the best part of all.

CS: What originally drew you to tell the story of William Wallace?

Wallace: When I first came across the story, I was in Scotland with my wife. She has a Mormon grandmother and I knew her ancestry, but I didn’t know any of mine. So, we had gone to Scotland because I had heard there were Wallace’s in Scotland and came across the statue of William Wallace. I heard a bit of the story — I asked some questions about him — and I heard he was Scotland’s greatest hero and that he had been betrayed possibly by Robert the Bruce. And that story struck me as fundamental to human life. What if something so noble about the life and death of William Wallace transformed Robert the Bruce. All of us are challenged, all of are afraid, and all of us have the capacity to do terrible things, but what happens when it turns us around with our lives and towards something that’s heroic and meaningful? There was that story, but I couldn’t even sit down to write for another ten years. And when I did it was at a really low and difficult part in my life when it appeared, I would have one more chance to write a screenplay before I would have to give up my aspirations to be a writer. And I thought I’m going to write what I want to see; not what Hollywood wants to sell. I’m going to write what I want. So, that’s the greatest of ironies to me is writing with a complete disregard to the marketplace turned out to be the movie that everyone in Hollywood seemed to love and embrace and try to emulate.

CS: There are a number of legends and historical accounts of William Wallace, specifically Blind Harry’s 15th century poem, how did you choose which elements to utilize for your screenplay? Were there other elements you wanted to put in there?

Wallace: Jeff, that is a question I’ve never been asked in all these years and it’s an extremely perceptive one. So, thank you! [Laughs]

CS: Yes!

Wallace: People have said to me, you must have done a ton of research. And the answer is, no I didn’t. First of all, there wasn’t much research to be done. There weren’t many sources as you point out. There was a general kind of legendary knowledge about William Wallace and I used that as a starting point to write the story I thought was relevant — what mattered to me, and what struck me as the most powerful. And then, I discovered the Blind Harry and read it and was astonished to find elements I thought I had invented in my telling of the story to be in the Blind Harry. One of them was William Wallace encounters Robert the Bruce on the battlefield. This is, of course, one of the most shocking and unexpected and powerful moments in the movie and that was in the Blind Harry as well. So, most of the research I did was from within me.

Other people have asked, well, what did you mostly read? And I said, mainly the New Testament. When you look at the William Wallace story it owes a great deal to the New Testament. Mel recognized that right away, and almost no one else did.

CS: That’s interesting. So, Mel Gibson comes aboard – did the script go through additional changes? Were there sequences or moments you had to give up?

Wallace: There’s a paradox in that I feel the final version of Braveheart is as close to my original vision of what it ought to be and my original script that I’ve ever done. The only other movie I’ve ever written as an original and handed to another director was Pearl Harbor. Braveheart is light years closer to my original vision than Pearl Harbor was — it had the story I wrote, but the execution of the story in Braveheart is so much the same. The irony of course, in that, is that any director on any movie has to take the script and take the story apart inside himself and reassemble himself as they see it. That happens with any story. That’s why novels are such an intimate art form, because the reader creates the story again inside themselves. And that happens with a screenplay, but Mel certainly brought himself to it. His recognition of the power of life and death and the power of fear and courage and the power of pain. He certainly saw it through his own lens. In the end the final version of the movie is the best version. There are scenes that I love that we didn’t film and scenes that I love that we did film that didn’t end up in the movie, and I love all of those and I would love the opportunity to show all of those to people who love the movie. But the final picture as a whole was the best choice to release.

CS: So, GibsonCut confirmed to release in the next few months. Got it.

Wallace: [Laughs] I don’t know if it would be that quick, but I would love to do it. There’s a lot of footage that the public has never seen. And it would be interesting to show. But, The Good, The Bad and The Ugly is one of my favorite movies ever, I’ve looked at all the DVDs with the cut scenes. In a certain way, they were unessential. I think everything that’s essential for the appreciation of the movie is available in the movie as it is today.

CS: One of the best lines in the movie is when his Uncle tells him to use his head before the sword — and there are a number of instances of this theme running through the film — what made you decide to write Wallace as a passionate, intelligent leader as opposed to an invincible force like, say, Rambo?

Wallace: Again, what a great question. That is one of my most dear moments, when they’re standing their watching the funeral and the Uncle says, “It was this way for me and your father when we were boys and saw our father killed,” and what that means to the boy. And what the movie means to fathers and sons and passing along the notion of this is who men can be, and this is who we ought to be. Writing this story was an unfolding miracle to me. The story started to tell itself and surprised me with moments like the flower at the grave. I didn’t imagine that would happen. I was writing that scene and I thought, somebody has to go comfort this boy standing at his father’s grave — his mother, father and brother are gone — and the neighbors don’t want to do it because they know if they touch they know they’re going to have to take him home and raise him. And then it was a child — a girl — who would speak to him. And what would she do, she would give him a flower. And then he gives the flower back to her when he returns after all those years. I never imagined that. I didn’t outline it that way and I didn’t base it on any historical source. Just, when I got to that moment, it suddenly told me that that is what should happen. So, the entire movie for me is an experience of a story that told itself to me and still does.

CS: That’s amazing! And clearly audiences felt the same way. Ok, now putting my fanboy hat on, Is there a unique, super-secretive tidbit about Braveheart you can share with us? Was it true Gibson asked Terry Gilliam to direct? Did Gibson really want Brad Pitt in the lead role?

Wallace: I’m absolutely certain there’s nothing to Mel asking Terry Gilliam to direct because I was the one who chose Mel. I did in alliance with one particular ally in the studio who was Rebecca Pollack, Sydney Pollack’s daughter. She was the mother of Braveheart. She was the one I first told the story to and said, “Go write that!” She and I talked about Mel. He was the choice I wanted and the one she wanted. We were thinking about other directors because Mel had mentioned directors, and Terry Gilliam might have been part of that, but there were no discussions with any other directors. Nor with actors. Mel wanted to direct, but he didn’t reveal that to us until after I’d gone to Scotland and came back and sat down in a meeting with him and showed him pictures of battle reenactors and things in the highlands I had found and settings. He said, “I want to direct this,” and he said it like he was letting me in on a secret and asked how I would feel about that. And I said, “I would love that.” He was thinking he wanted to direct and did not want to star. He wanted to direct and pick somebody younger to star. The biggest name he kept mentioning to me was Jason Patric. Of course, I love Brad Pitt. I think he’s wonderful, but I think Mel had the same vision and same issue every director has. In order to get the funding to make the movie the way you want to make the movie, the studio wants a star. The studio wanted Mel. I wanted Mel because he was creatively right. I thought he was the only actor who had the combination of strength and sensitivity to do it. Eventually, he came to that conclusion too. And I think he’s glad he did.

CS: Ok, so, our time is winding down. Last question: it was reported a while back that you were working with Gibson again on a Passion of the Christ sequel. Do you have any updates you can share about that project?

Wallace: I don’t have any updates that I can share. But I can tell you that we talk about it a lot. It’s something I feel like has to happen. That is the Mount Everest of stories and we will be ready to talk about it in some point in the future, but we just can’t discuss it right now.

The Vast of Night Review

Rating:

9/10

Directed by Andrew Patterson

The Vast of Night Review:

Exploring the vast cosmos and the possibility of life in outer space has been a fascination of both up-and-coming filmmakers and longtime vets of the cinematic world but few have done so in their directorial debuts with such gusto and innovative grace as Andrew Patterson has in the thrilling and nostalgic low budget affair The Vast of Night.

In the twilight of the 1950s, on one fateful night in New Mexico, a young, winsome switchboard operator Fay (Sierra McCormick) and charismatic radio DJ Everett (Jake Horowitz) discover a strange audio frequency that could change their small town and the future forever. Dropped phone calls, AM radio signals, secret reels of tape forgotten in a library, switchboards, crossed patchlines and an anonymous phone call lead Fay and Everett on a scavenger hunt toward the unknown.

The plot might not sound like the most unique or fascinating setup but the way the story plays out across its near-90-minute runtime feels very original and keeps the film grounded and draws in viewers in a brilliant manner. Setting the film up as an episode of a Twilight Zone-inspired episode nicely sets up its entire throwback vibe, with its opening crawling camera pan into a ’50s-era TV to its flashes back to the screen and old-school credits keeping the mood firmly in the past without letting it getting trapped there.

One of the most innovative elements of the film comes in Patterson’s direction itself, especially in the opening half of the film, which draws audiences in with what feels like a handful of one-shot vignettes tacked on to each other, but rather than appear disjointed or create a sense of going for a gimmick, it’s a really ambitious style choice. It helps entice audiences to want to stick with the plot and the characters and helps them grow and evolve into fascinating people that exist today just as much as they did in its past era, almost creating a tone reminiscent of a family friendly Quentin Tarantino.

Given the film’s small budget, it’s rather impressive the nature of these directorial choices, as the sweeping shots of the town’s first basketball game of the season through the crowd and down streets as Fay and Everett run down their local streets are indicative more of a film with tens of millions of dollars to spend. Especially as many of these sequences aren’t handheld, but on a dolly or crane or track, it’s a truly incredible feeling watching the direction in these scenes and is the utmost proof Patterson will be one to keep an eye on in the future.

In addition to Patterson’s stylish direction, the performances from leads Sierra McCormick and Jake Horowitz prove to be exhilarating and compelling, helping audiences tap in to the spunky switchboard operator who will probably never escape her hometown and an energetic and fast-talking aspiring radio host with big plans for his future. McCormick keeps from allowing Fay to drift into stereotypical or cardboard territory and keeps her grounded in captivating fashion, proving to be one of the better heroines from the modern attempts at connecting to the past. Though Horowitz’ portrayal of Everett is a little more by-the-book for his quick-witted role, he still delivers every quip, every interrogative question and every revelation with grace that makes him just as much fun to watch as his female co-lead.

The film’s real problems lie in its uneventful ending and occasionally mismatched score, the latter of which isn’t necessarily a glaring flaw of the film but one that occasionally drags it down. The score is wonderful from start to finish, reminiscent of some of the best films and series in the sci-fi genre, but some of its tracks don’t quite set the right tone for the scenes they’re attached to, either creating an air of mystery when it’s not needed or sadness when everything is pretty even-heeled for the time being.

Overall, The Vast of the Night is a thrilling, captivating and brilliant effort from debut filmmaker Andrew Patterson and features strong performances from its leads, all of which thoroughly help it overcome its minor flaws to be a joyride for genre buffs and general audiences alike.
