Synopsis:

In the six-episode season, Scooter rushes to make his delivery deadlines and upload the brand-new Muppet series for streaming. They are due now, and he’ll need to navigate whatever obstacles, distractions, and complications the rest of the Muppet gang throws at him.

Muppets Now Review:

The Muppets are one of the longest-running franchises in Hollywood with 27 television specials, 11 television series, eight feature films and five made-for-TV movies. The late Jim Henson created a mini empire filled with colorful characters and nifty puppetry and producers have tried to find ways to milk the franchise for all its worth.

Personally, I think the Muppets crew peaked with 1992’s terrific The Muppet Christmas Carol starring Michael Caine — a film in which everything about these oddballs, including the wacky humor, songs and characterizations, perfectly meshed together. And while four other films have since been produced, including the entertaining Muppet Treasure Island and the Jason Segal-starring reboot The Muppets, at this point in time the franchise feels antiquated.

Muppets Now, the new show that begins airing today on Disney+, is yet another attempt to bring Kermit, Miss Piggy, Gonzo and the lot into the modern era. And while the results are about as entertaining as any Muppet-centric 20-minute episode could be, there’s something a little offsetting about seeing the gang make hashtag and YouTube jokes and chat with one another via Skype. We’re a long way from the simple charms of 1979’s The Muppet Movie.

Taking a cue from Netflix’s equally eccentric StoryBots, Muppets Now splits its truncated runtime into a variety of humorous, rapid-fire vignettes. The best of the bunch is Okey Dokey Cooking in which the famed Swedish Chef attempts to outcook a special guest while a turkey delivers wry commentary. Naturally, the Swedish Chef botches the proceedings all the while mumbling incoherent jargon and making veiled threats towards the likes of Danny Trejo and Chef Roy.

Other bits include Mup Close and Personal, a talk-show themed sequence featuring Kermit and Miss Piggy speaking with celebrities like RuPaul and Aubrey Plaza; Pepe’s Unbelievable Game Show, where the King Prawn forces guests to compete in ridiculous games like a sock throwing contest; Lifestyles with Miss Piggy, which itself breaks off into different segments involving actress Linda Cardellini and actor/singer Taye Diggs; and Muppet Labs Field Test, where Scooter and Beaker conduct scientific tests that mostly entail thinly veiled educational exercises like throwing pizza at a wall to demonstrate velocity.

There’s plenty of energy to be had and the production is sound. But there’s also a whiff of desperation hanging in the air as every sequence is jam packed with non-stope shenanigans that overshadow whatever learning opportunities exist. This isn’t Sesame Street where colorful characters used humor to relay important, necessary information to kids. Instead, Muppets Now is a straight-up comedic farce that feels, for lack of a better word, kitschy.

“I thought there was a method to this madness, but it appears to be just madness,” a character correctly says at one point.

That said, fans of the Muppets will likely enjoy the wild shenanigans in Muppets Now. At this point, you either love these guys and yearn for more opportunities to hear Fozzie’s terrible standup bits, or you deem these furry critters as relics of a bygone era where their humorous antics felt fresh.

Invited by Dr. Cecilia Reyes (Alice Braga) to share their stories about when their powers first manifested, the five “patients” come to understand that they are in a class of people called mutants, who have historically been marginalized and feared. As they relive their origin stories, their memories seem to turn into terrifying realities. Soon, they question what is real and what isn’t, and it becomes clear that the institution isn’t what it seems. Now the question is — why are they being held captive? Alan Parker, two-time Oscar-nominated director, dies at 76

ComingSoon.net is saddened to bring you the news (via The Hollywood Reporter) that Alan Parker, two-time Oscar-nominated director of such classics as Mississippi Burning and Evita, has died at the age of 76 after a lengthy battle with an illness not revealed.

Parker had a highly-celebrated career that lasted over 30 years that began to take off in the mid ’70s with his feature directorial debut in 1976’s gangster musical comedy Bugsy Malone, which he wrote and directed and featured child actors portraying the adult characters. Though not a commercial success outside of the Parker’s home United Kingdom, it was a critical smash and garnered eight BAFTA nominations and three wins and three Golden Globe nominations.

Parker immediately followed it up with another critical and commercial smash in 1978’s prison drama Midnight Express which, though receiving some criticism from the source material’s author and for its portrayal of Turkish prisoners, would go on to receive six Oscar nominations including for Best Picture and Best Director and won two for Best Screenplay Based on Material From Another Medium for Oliver Stone (Snowden) and Best Original Score for Giorgio Moroder. His streak would continue with the six Oscar-nominated and two-winning teen musical drama Fame, the Golden Globe-nominated drama Shoot the Moon, the infamous film adaptation of Pink Floyd — The Wall, the Matthew Modine and Nicolas Cage-starring adaptation of Birdy and the Mickey Rourke and Robert De Niro-starring psychological horror pic Angel Heart, all of which received generally positive-to-rave reviews though the latter two were box office disappointments.

The director would then soar to new heights with the 1988 biographical crime thriller Mississippi Burning starring Willem Dafoe and Gene Hackman, which, though receiving criticism for its depiction of real events, still received rave reviews from critics and was a solid box office success, netting seven Oscar nominations including Best Picture and Best Director and four Golden Globe nominations. Burning would almost act as Parker’s peak as his follow-up films, Come See the Paradise and The Road to Wellville received generally mixed reviews and were box office failures while The Commitments was underwhelming at the box office despite rave reviews and his 1976 adaptation of Evita saw mixed reviews but was a box office smash.

Parker would close out his career with the 1999 adaptation of Angela’s Ashes and the 2003 drama The Life of David Gale, both of which received generally mixed-to-negative reviews from critics and were financial disappointments.

The Last of Us Producer says HBO series will expand the game’s story

In a new interview with BBC Radio 5 Live, Chernobyl creator Craig Mazin has opened up about HBO‘s live-action series adaptation of The Last of Us, revealing the meticulous process of developing a series based on a beloved franchise like the popular horror game.

Mazin, who will be serving as a writer and producer on the upcoming series, has assured fans that they have nothing to worry about because the long-awaited project is definitely in good hands as he and game creator Neil Druckmann are only planning to expand or enhance the original game’s story, rather than make changes that will undo it.

“I think fans of something worry that, when the property gets licenced to someone else, those people don’t really understand it, or are going to change it,” Mazin explained (via IGN). “In this case, I’m doing it with the guy who did it, and so the changes that we’re making are designed to fill things out and expand, not to undo, but rather to enhance.”

He also added his excitement for project, “We’re creating anew and we’re also reimagining what is already there to present a different format. It’s kind of a dream come true for me. I’m a little bit scared because a lot of emotions connected to this game are rather intense. I think I’m probably going to go hide in a bunker for a while because you can’t make everyone happy!”

CS Interview: Daniel Mays on Unique Role in Fisherman’s Friends

CS Interview: Daniel Mays on Unique Role in Fisherman's Friends

CS Interview: Daniel Mays on unique role in Fisherman’s Friends

ComingSoon.net got the opportunity to chat with Good Omens alum Daniel Mays to discuss his role in the well-received British biographical music drama Fisherman’s Friends, seeing him in a unique role in comparison to the “hard-hitting” characters he’s used to taking on. Click here to rent or purchase the well-received film centered on the Cornish singing group!

RELATED: CS Interview: Tuppence Middleton on Heartwarming Fisherman’s Friends

Mays, who has been around the industry for 25 years, found it to be an interesting opportunity to make a “departure” from portraying the more “intense characters” that have come his way throughout his career and to instead play the love interest in a semi-rom-com story, calling it a “really interesting experiment to take on.”

“They showed me the script and it was based on a true story, I had no knowledge of The Fisherman’s Friends as a singing group,” Mays noted. “I didn’t know who they were. So they sent me their album and the music along with the script. I just thought, ‘You know what? If this is done well and right and it’s cast intelligently, then I think we should be onto our winner.’ It kind of ticks the box with all of those sort of crowd pleasing, heart-warming movies that the UK did so well. One thinks of The Full Monty and you know, all those type of movies that are all about the underdog, you know, and surpassing all expectation. Well, I think Fisherman’s Friends, it really does that. You can’t help but have a smile on your face when you finish the movie, also it moves you to tears as well. They say, I think we’ve really drained loads of different elements and levels to the film. And I think that’s a testament to the ensemble cast and all their performances and the superb direction of Chris Foggin, also.”

In bringing his fish out of water character to life, the 42-year-old star expressed his biggest creative challenge was to “always make him likable,” noting how when audiences are first introduced to music exec Danny he is “kind of described as a tosser.”

“He’s got his eyes on the prize and all the gadgets and gold discs on his wall, and you know, he’s living a very narcissistic, shallow existence and he’s just looking for the dollar,” Mays described. “But I think the key to him was that underneath all of that, he does kind of have a heart of gold. And I think when he’s pranked by his boss played by Noel Clarke, I think he instinctively finds something in the story of “The Fisherman’s Friends” and that sense of community. And he of course, he falls in love with the girl in the village. I think all of those factors contribute to him kind of coming to a crossroads in his life. And you know, he reevaluates what’s meaningful and important to him. And it’s about companionship and love and all of those, you know, universal things that we all kind of need to exist. So I think it’s sort of a very—I mean, it’s a deceptive film in many respects. You know what I mean? I think it surpasses all your expectations of what you think the film would be.”

Though from the UK, Mays originally grew up in lived in the southeast area of the country in comparison to the story’s southwest setting of Cornwall and when it came to shooting on location he recalled it to be “such an idyllic place” and even recognizing it from the iconic British medical dramedy Doc Martin.

“There were a lot of American tourists walking about the place, because that show is so popular in the States,” Mays pointed out. “But I mean, the thing that you have to get your head around when you arrive is just how small a community it is. You know, and that was the beautiful thing about it, is that the community as a whole who live down there really welcomed us with open arms. And you know, we were actually shooting in the Golden Lion pub itself, and just to be able to sort of shoot in the actual location where this story took place lends itself to the story and gives it an air of authenticity and realness, which I think really comes through as well.”

When it came to building the rapport with the rest of the ensemble cast, Mays described the process as a really “natural thing,” even with his having to quickly familiarize himself with the cast and material after just having wrapped work on another project.

“I remember finishing that job and being whisked away in the car and having two days to acclimatize down there,” Mays recalled. “Then, literally, there’s a sequence when I’m on the end of a seawall on the mobile phone, which is the only place you can get a signal to make a call back to London. So that was literally my first scene that I shot for Fisherman’s Friends and they chained me up to this sea wall, and it was very windy. All of a sudden, they get blown off into the sea. But it was just literally hilarious. And I didn’t really have time to think about it, but I was sort of thrown in the deep end with it. But when you’re surrounded by actors as good as that, the camaraderie and all of those things felt incredibly natural.”

After receiving strong reviews from UK audiences for over a year, the film has finally made its way to American audiences through digital platforms and VOD and May finds it “really exciting” and is “quite confident that the audiences in America are going to really love this film.”

“I think you’d have to have a heart of stone to not fall in love with the locations, the cinematography, the story of the Fisherman’s Friends themselves,” Mays expressed. “Like I mentioned earlier, what another huge bonus of this movie is the musical element. The sea shanties are utterly infectious. I mean, I didn’t have to learn any of the lines for the sea shanties, but we would invariably finish a day filming and then we’d be in the pub singing the sea shanties along with all of the community. And I knew all of the words to all of the songs afterwards. I even sang on the seaside with the real Fishermen’s Friends at the wrap party. And every month, they sing down there and they get over 1,000 people in the audience. And it’s a really idyllic, beautiful setting. And they called us up onto the stage and we sang about three or four sea shanties with them. So it was one of the most memorable wrap parties, and just we had the best time on it.”

RELATED: CS Interview: James Purefoy on Fisherman’s Friends & Possible Sequel!

A fast-living, cynical London music executive (Daniel Mays) heads to a remote Cornish village on a stag weekend where he’s pranked by his boss (Noel Clarke) into trying to sign a group of shanty singing fishermen (led by James Purefoy). He becomes the ultimate “fish out of water” as he struggles to gain the respect or enthusiasm of the unlikely boy band and their families (including Tuppence Middleton) who value friendship and community over fame and fortune. As he’s drawn deeper into the traditional way of life he’s forced to reevaluate his own integrity and ultimately question what success really means.

The movie stars Daniel Mays (1917), Purefoy, David Hayman (Blinded by the Light), Dave Johns (Blithe Spirit), Sam Swainsbury (Fearless), Tuppence Middleton (Sense8), Maggie Steed (Paddington 2), Vahid Gold, Christian Brassington (Poldark) and Noel Clarke (Bulletproof).

Fisherman’s Friends was directed by Chris Foggin (Kids in Love) from a script by Meg Leonard (Finding Your FeetBlithe Spirit) and Nick Moorcroft (Blithe Spirit).

Once On This Island: Disney+ adapting Broadway musical into film

Following the immense success of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Hamilton, BlackFilmAndTV brings word Disney+ has acquired the rights to another popular Broadway musical, Once On This Island. However, unlike Hamilton‘s debut, the streamer is planning to go with a more traditional live-action film adaptation, instead of a live recording stage performance of Lynn Ahren’s one-act musical.

Based on the 1985 novel by author Rosa Guy titled “My Love, My Love: or The Peasant Girl”, Once On This Island is a one-act musical featuring the book and lyrics by Tony winner Lynn Ahrens and the music by Grammy winner Stephen Flaherty. Set in the French Antilles in the Caribbean Sea, the musical follows the story of a peasant girl named Ti Moune as she falls in love with Daniel Beauxhomme, a young grande homme who lives on the wealthy other side of the island. Against this backdrop, social class differences play out while the island gods including Asaka, Agwe, Erzulie, and Papa Ge wager a bet on Ti Moune’s life as they try to find out what is stronger: love or death.

The film adaptation will be directed by Kenya filmmaker Wanuri Kahiu (Rafiki) from a screenplay that will be written by playwright Jocelyn Bioh. It will be produced by Marc Platt (Legally Blonde, La La Land).

The original Broadway production of Once On This Island had only ran for a year from 1990-1991 which had earned eight Tony nominations for Best Musical and Best Original Score. A London production was also produced in 1995 where it was awarded a Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. In 2017, 26 years later since the original had concluded its production, the Broadway musical was revived by Michael Arden and Camille A. Brown which featured Hailey Kilgore, Alex Newell, Merle Dandridge, Quentin Earl Darrington and Lea Salonga.

The Last Mercenary: Jean-Claude Van Damme leads Netflix’s new action-comedy film

Universal Soldier star Jean-Claude Van Damme has officially signed on for the leading role in Netflix‘s upcoming action-comedy titled The Last Mercenary, which has already begun its filming in France. This marks the Belgian action star’s first ever project with a streaming service.

“’The Last Mercenary’ is an incredibly exciting project and allows me to take on a new genre,” Van Damme said in a statement (via Deadline). “I’ve always been a fan of Jean-Paul Belmondo and I hope to take up the torch of action comedy in my own way. David Charhon’s script brings all these elements together in a very successful way – a beautiful story with emotion, a lot of action and a lot of humor. I’m also very happy to work alongside a new generation of talent such as Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla and Samir Decazza, but also to be reunited on screen with the creme de la creme of French actors such as Patrick Timsit, Eric Judor, Miou-Miou and Valérie Kaprisky.”

RELATED: Denzel Washington & Julia Roberts Reunite for Leave The World Behind

The Last Mercenary centers around a mysterious former secret service agent (Van Damme) as he must urgently return to France when his estranged son is falsely accused of arms and drug trafficking by the government, following a blunder by an overzealous bureaucrat and a mafia operation. Joining Van Damme are French actors Alban Ivanov, Assa Sylla, Samir Decazza, Patrick Timsit, Eric Judor and Miou-Miou.

This project will also be Van Damme’s first action comedy as he is mostly-known for his action-martial arts films such as Bloodsport, Cyborg and Kickboxer. He gained international success and had become one of the iconic action stars during the late 80s up to the 90s for appearing in a number of action films including: Death Warrant, Universal Soldier, Nowhere to Run, Hard Target, Street Fighter, Sudden Death, Timecop and more.

Charhon added, “I want to return to the great tradition of action films of the ’80s and ’90s – those cult films we all love where the heroes were out of the ordinary, the stunts were all more impressive and truer than life, and all punctuated with humor. Only Jean-Claude could embody this unparalleled golden age of cinema.”

The Last Mercenary is directed by David Charhon, who co-wrote the film with Ismaël Sy Savané. It is being produced by: Forecast Pictures’ Jean-Charles Levy and Nicolas Manuel; Other Angle Pictures’ Olivier Albou and Laurence Schonberg; Mony Films’ David Charhon, Jakéma Charhon, and Eponine Maillet; and Apple Tree’s Olias Barco and Vlad Riashyn.

RELATED: The Other Typist: Keira Knightley to Star in Hulu’s New Limited Series

Misbehaviour boasts an all-star cast including Academy Award nominee Keira Knightley (The Imitation Game, Pride & Prejudice), BAFTA Film Award nominee Gugu Mbatha-Raw (The Morning Show, Black Mirror), BAFTA Film Award nominee Jessie Buckley (Wild Rose, Judy), BAFTA TV Award nominee Keeley Hawes (Bodyguard, The Durrells), BAFTA Film Award winner Phyllis Logan (Downton Abbey, Secrets & Lies), Academy Award nominee Lesley Manville (Ordinary Love, Phantom Thread) BAFTA TV Award winner Rhys Ifans (The King’s Man, Notting Hill), and Academy Award nominee Greg Kinnear (Frankie, As Good as It Gets). A witty yet heartfelt film, Misbehaviour was directed by multiple BAFTA Award-winning director Philippa Lowthorpe and written by Rebecca Frayn and BAFTA Scotland Award nominee Gaby Chiappe.

In 1970, the Miss World competition took place in London, hosted by US comedy legend, Bob Hope. At the time, Miss World was the most-watched TV show on the planet with over 100 million viewers. Claiming that beauty competitions demeaned women, the newly formed Women’s Liberation Movement achieved overnight fame by invading the stage and disrupting the live broadcast of the competition. Not only that, when the show resumed, the result caused uproar: the winner was not the Swedish favorite but Miss Grenada, the first black woman to be crowned Miss World. In a matter of hours, a global audience had witnessed the patriarchy driven from the stage and the Western ideal of beauty turned on its head.
