Lanterns: James Gunn Debunks Absurd DCU Ryan Reynolds Rumor

James Gunn has debunked an early rumor about Green Lantern in the DCU. The DC Studios co-CEO is also overseeing a Lanterns TV series, which will premiere later this year.

What Lanterns rumor did James Gunn debunk?

Before Superman was released, a strange rumor had fans wondering if James Gunn wanted Ryan Reynolds to reprise his Hal Jordan role in the DCU. The question arose when Gunn shared an anecdote about the first people who congratulated him on taking the reins of DC Studios. At the time, Gunn shared that he asked Reynolds if he wanted to reprise his role as Green Lantern again in the DCU. According to Gunn, Reynolds replied with a simple, “F— off!”

View on Threads

Gunn has now officially clarified that Reynolds was never actually seriously offered a part in Lanterns, and Reynolds’ reply was a tongue-in-cheek joke between friends. When asked by a fan whether Reynolds was ever actually offered the part, Gunn replied on Threads, “Not really. Ryan wrote to congratulate me the day I got the job and I jokingly asked him if he was ready to don the suit again and he jokingly responded.”

Ryan Reynolds played Hal Jordan in 2011’s Green Lantern feature film. Unfortunately, the film bombed at the box office, along with receiving scathing reviews. Since then, Reynolds has often poked fun at the film’s failure. Following that, Reynolds played Deadpool in the X-Men spin-offs, continuing the role until the character arrived in the MCU. Reynolds often provides updates on Deadpool 4, and fans are predicting that he will reprise the role in this year’s Avengers: Doomsday.

The DCU has since cast Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan, who will portray a more experienced version of the character in the upcoming show. Lanterns will also introduce Aaron Pierre’s John Stewart to audiences, who will then reprise the role in next year’s Man of Tomorrow.

Lanterns will premiere on August 16, 2026, on HBO and HBO Max.

Why Supergirl Bombed Hard at the Box Office

Why Supergirl Box Office Bomb Flop Failure
[Image Credit: DC / Warner Bros.]

The dust from the weekend has finally settled, and Supergirl is unfortunately in dire straits after its debut at the box office. While the Milly Alcock-led superhero flick still has many months to go in theaters, Warner Bros. and DC Studios are already bracing for a huge loss given the movie’s large budget and marketing campaign. This successor to DCU’s 2025 Superman, in which Milly Alcock’s Supergirl appeared in a short scene, faced several warning signs as the movie had its box office projections lowered a few times as it flew toward a July 26 release. Before its debut, one prediction had it earning only $38 million in its domestic opener, and that has sadly come to pass, in what is already expected to be a gigantic box office bomb.

Supergirl was a difficult sell for audiences from the start

A July 29 report from Variety has Supergirl potentially costing Warner Bros. and DC Studios somewhere between $80 million and $120 million, depending on how much the film will be able to bring in at the box office through its full theatrical run. At the time of writing, the movie has earned $68 million worldwide in its opening weekend, per Box Office Mojo, against a $290 million total budget that combines a $170 million production and a $120 million marketing spend.

As for what went wrong with Supergirl, its main obstacle has been poor audience appeal. Broadly speaking, the superheroine is not one of the most popular characters in the DCU, so it was going to be a tough sell for audiences from the start. A list on Ranker that asks fans to vote on their favorite DC Comics heroes has Supergirl / Kara Zor-El in 25th place, below other female characters in the franchise, such as Wonder Woman (3rd), Raven (12th), Zatanna (16th), and Barbara Gordon’s Batgirl (17th).

Superman, which ranks second on the list, was barely able to eke out a box office success with the 2025 David Corenswet-led film, which brought in $618 million worldwide on a rough $560 million break-even point (that’s 2.5 times its $225 million budget). So for Supergirl, a less popular character, to become a hit as well was going to be uphill climb from the beginning, especially given that its budget was a whopping $170 million.

More than that, Supergirl received a ‘B-‘ CinemaScore, which measures a movie’s appeal by polling audiences on opening night. To put this grade in perspective, this is lower than the CinemaScores for other blockbusters, like Masters of the Universe (B), Star Wars: Mandalorian & Grogu (A-), Disclosure Day (B), Mortal Kombat II (B), and Toy Story 5 (A). Among all of the films that were still in theaters when Supergirl debuted, only the Scary Movie revival and Hugh Jackman’s The Death of Robin Hood received a lower CinemaScore of a ‘C+.’

So while Supergirl ranked ninth in an April Fandango poll on the most-anticipated summer films, it has not been able to sustain that momentum over a stacked summer schedule. With comic fans being more selective on what superhero films they want to see in theaters, many have decided to choose Spider-Man: Brand New Day (July 31) instead.

Beyond that, it was brave for Supergirl to be slated a week after Toy Story 5 (June 19), which had a gigantic $159 million domestic opener (and an ‘A’ Cinemascore to boot). In its sophomore outing, it managed to rake in $70 million domestically, taking away much of what Supergirl could have earned as a fellow family-friendly option. Early July will be a minefield for the movie’s continued run in theaters too, with Minions & Monsters (July 1), Young Washington (July 3), Evil Dead Burn (July 10), the live-action Moana (July 10), and The Odyssey (July 17).

With its placement on the theatrical calendar and lack of audience appeal, Supergirl was primed to flop at the box office regardless of what critics thought. Of course, it doesn’t help that the movie has received a low rating of 55% on Rotten Tomatoes, but its fate was largely sealed months in advance.

Toy Story 5 Continues Box Office Dominance as Other Summer Tentpoles Crash

Photo Credit: Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures

Toy Story 5 is inching toward a jaw-dropping global milestone and nothing can stop it. A breakdown of the winners and losers from a wild weekend at the movies.

Toy Story 5 box office almost goes past $600 million

Toy Story 5 collected $585 million worldwide by its second weekend, according to Deadline. The Disney/Pixar sequel earned $159.1 million globally in its sophomore frame. Domestically, the film posted $70 million and sits at $297.2 million stateside.

The Andrew Stanton-directed sequel held with a 56% second-weekend drop. Notably, that decline mirrors Incredibles 2, which holds the record for the best animated opening ever. Additionally, Toy Story 5 ranked first in nearly every international market during its second frame.

Updated overseas totals include $48 million in Mexico and $37.8 million in the UK. China contributed $29.8 million, while France and Brazil each added $15.7 million and $12.6 million respectively. Meanwhile, Australia also reached $12.6 million through the film’s second weekend.

On the other hand, Warner Bros.’ Supergirl opened to just $68 million worldwide against a $170-$186 million net production budget (via Deadline). The DC title earned only $38 million domestically and $30 million from 77 international markets. As a result, its global launch fell below even Joker: Folie a Deux’s $114.8 million worldwide opening.

Furthermore, Supergirl joins a growing list of underperforming tentpoles this year. Amazon MGM’s Masters of the Universe managed only $29.4 million in its domestic opening. Similarly, Disney’s Mandalorian and Grogu sits at $175.2 million domestic after six weekends in theaters. Warner Bros.’ Mortal Kombat 2 also struggled earlier this year at the box office.

Despite these individual misfires, the overall 2026 box office remains strong. The year-to-date domestic total stands at $4.7 billion, up 15% over 2025.

In fact, summer grosses have officially crossed $2.1 billion, running 17% ahead of last summer. Super Mario Galaxy currently leads all 2026 releases with $1 billion worldwide. The Michael Jackson biopic Michael follows closely at $977.4 million globally. Finally, Universal’s Minions and Monsters began its offshore rollout with $10.3 million from ten early territories.

Supergirl: Why DCU Director ‘Very Deliberately’ Didn’t Look at Woman of Tomorrow Comic

Supergirl is based on Tom King’s Woman of Tomorrow, but the film’s director avoided reading it after getting the job. The film and the comic follow Kara Zor-El and Krypto on an intergalactic adventure.

What did Craig Gillespie say about not looking at the Supergirl comic?

In a recent interview, Supergirl director Craig Gillespie explained why he “very deliberately” didn’t look at the Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic at first.

“I very deliberately didn’t look at Tom King’s book when I first got the script,” Gillespie told Everyman Cinema. “I went off of Ana [Nogueira]’s script and there was a grit to that and I really wanted to come from character. [Kara’s] going to all of these different worlds that are on the fringe of society. I wanted to feel the poverty, I wanted to feel the crime and the dust and the texture.”

Gillespie went on to say that he wanted to create a “space we hadn’t felt before” after reading the script. The filmmaker started pulling visual references for what he wanted the film to look like, creating “about 120 images” to present to DC Studios co-CEOs James Gunn and Peter Safran. It was during this process that Gillespie went back to read the Woman of Tomorrow comic book.

Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow is an eight-issue miniseries released between 2021 and 2022. The series was written by Tom King and illustrated by Bilquis Evely. The comic was originally pitched as a team-up adventure between Supergirl and Lobo, but the final version did not include the intergalactic bounty hunter. The film adaptation features Jason Momoa’s DCU debut as Lobo, marking a major departure from the comic.

Supergirl stars Milly Alcock in the lead role, which she will reprise in next year’s Man of Tomorrow. The film has received mixed reviews, though SuperherHype’s Matt Morrison enjoyed the film, calling it an improvement over the comic in his review.

Supergirl releases in theaters on June 26, 2026.

Supergirl Reviews Reveal a Major DCU Issue James Gunn Will Need To Address

(Credit: DC Studios)

The reviews are in for DC Studios‘ second DC Universe movie, Supergirl, and they’re not looking good. In fact, a glaring issue has been spotted that James Gunn will need to address immediately if he wants this shared universe to last.

James Gunn’s voice is all over Supergirl… and that’s not good

At the time of writing, with 90 reviews counted, Supergirl is “rotten” on the review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes with a critics’ score of 59%. While a lot of criticism seems to be going to the screenplay, there are also quite a few reviews that note that Supergirl feels like an inferior James Gunn movie.

Independent‘s Clarisse Loughrey wrote that Supergirl felt like it was forced to “keep things as distinctly Gunn-esque as possible,” which robbed the superhero “the chance to speak with her own voice.”

Shakyl Lambert voiced a similar complaint, writing for CGMagazine that the movie’s “biggest problem is that [director] Craig Gillespie does not have a particularly distinctive voice. His persistent reliance on needle drops, which seem to arrive every few minutes, often makes the film feel like a lesser Guardians of the Galaxy.”

When Gunn was first hyping up the DCU back in 2023, he made it clear that the tone would shift from project to project to “reflect the unique sensibilities of the filmmakers involved.” However, four projects in, the only tone fans have seen so far is from the studio head himself. Creature Commandos, Peacemaker, and Superman were all written by Gunn, and in the latter two cases, also directed by him.

There was already concern from some fans, myself included, that the DCU was feeling too Gunn-heavy, which is why Supergirl felt like a nice breather ahead of Man of Tomorrow. It’s clear now, based on the reviews, that Gunn likely played a bigger role in the minutiae of Supergirl’s whole production process than a studio head would normally have, likely due to the character’s close relationship with Superman.

But that’s not necessarily the problem. Kevin Feige certainly steers a tight ship over at Marvel, so why shouldn’t Gunn with DC? The real issue is that Gunn seems to be forcing his voice and tone onto almost every project, a unique creative style that works best when used sparingly.

What made the Guardians of the Galaxy so special is that they were unlike any other character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe at the time of their debut. The humor felt fresh and the needle drops served a purpose to the story. The Guardians were the perfect side dish to the Avengers’ main course.

However, “a little goes a long way,” as the saying goes. When every project begins to feel the same, that’s when you start losing what made it special in the first place. Hopefully, Gunn won’t ignore these reviews and actually take the criticism to heart, step back, and let the other filmmakers’ voices shine through. The last thing the DCU needs is for every project to feel like a rip-off of Guardians of the Galaxy.

It does look like the next two DCU projects, Clayface and Lanterns, will be offering fans something not Gunn-like at all, with an R-rated body horror movie and a True Detective-inspired murder mystery. So long as those projects stay true to those descriptions and don’t feature any of Gunn’s trademark humor and needle drops, then it might not be over for the DCU just yet.

I still have trust in Gunn, but hopefully Supergirl ends up being the wakeup call he needs to realize the DCU needs more distinct creator-driven projects like Clayface and Lanterns and less Guardians of the Galaxy reduxes.

Avengers: Doomsday’s Cast Snubs Are Squandering Its Big X-Men Reunion

Avengers: Doomsday’s Cast Snubs Are Squandering Its Big X-Men Reunion

Avengers: Doomsday‘s cast will feature a ton of cameos and returns. However, one of the biggest casting snubs may end up squandering the reunion we’re all looking forward to.

So far, little is known about Avengers: Doomsday. However, the film is set to feature a huge cast, which includes Chris Hemsworth’s Thor, Pedro Pascal’s Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby’s Invisible Woman/Sue Storm, Anthony Mackie’s Captain America, Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes/Winter Soldier, Letitia Wright’s Shuri/Black Panther, and Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man, among others. Avengers: Doomsday is set to release on December 18, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars is set to release a year later on December 17, 2027.

It’s no secret that the next installment in the Avengers franchise will feature the return of many of the former X-Men cast from the Fox era of movies. One star who seemingly won’t be back, though, is Famke Janssen’s Jean Grey. She’s maintained she won’t appear in the film, and in a recent interview with Nerdtropolis, suggested that Marvel Studios “made a mistake” by not bringing her back.

Jean Grey’s absence from Avengers: Doomsday would ruin what looks to be an awesome reunion

Grey’s exclusion would be a surprise for what seemed to be a highly anticipated reunion of the original X-Men crew. For all intents and purposes, Doomsday will likely be the last time we’ll see many of the original X-Men in their roles, especially when it comes to stars like Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. Many were hoping that the reunion would include the likes of Grey, and keeping her out of the movie for one reason or another just puts a sour note on the whole thing.

On top of Grey’s absence, it also seems like Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine will not be reuniting with his former team either. While rumors suggest that Wolverine will be involved in the movie in some way, all reports point to him being involved in other aspects of the movie and not teaming up with the X-Men. Like Grey, this would be an absolutely wild choice, especially considering the history Jackman has in the world of Marvel movies.

He’s been one of the longest-running actors to appear in any of these movies, and not getting at least one more scene between him and James Marsden’s Cyclops, for example, would feel like a huge missed opportunity. While much of what Doomsday has in store remains unknown, fans continue to hope for some big moments. Unfortunately, it seems like when it comes to the planned X-Men reunion, we’ll be a few members short of getting what we really want.

Beloved Ice Cube Movie Finally Getting a Sequel After 20 Years

Ice Cube‘s popular comedy movie is finally getting a sequel after 20 years. He is reuniting with his on-screen co-star for the franchise’s third installment.

What Ice Cube movie is finally getting a sequel?

It’s been confirmed that Ice Cube’s Are We There Yet? franchise is getting another movie after two decades. Cube and actress Nia Long will come together for a sequel to their last film in the series, 2007’s Are We Done Yet?, reports Deadline.

The next movie in the comedy road franchise is titled Are They Gone Yet? It will see Cube and Long reprising their roles as Nick Persons and Suzanne Kingston-Persons, respectively. The next installment will see Nick facing the biggest challenge of his life: his grandkids. Currently in the early development stage, Are They Gone Yet? is being written by Chris Hazzard and Mike Fontana.

“We built something special with this franchise. Audiences grew up with Nick Persons, and now Nick’s got grandkids. Time flies,” said Cube about the next installment. “Partnering with Skydance to bring this story to a new generation is exactly the kind of move CubeVision was built for, and I am excited for the new partnership.”

Speaking more about the Are We There Yet? franchise, it kicked off in the year 2005 with the first part. However, it failed to win over critics and audiences back then. The film earned a poor Tomatometer score of just 12% and a Popcornmeter score of 45% on Rotten Tomatoes. The same was the case with the second movie, Are We Done Yet?, which fared even worse. It currently holds an abysmal Tomatometer score of 7% and a Popcornmeter score of 33% on Rotten Tomatoes.

Despite the poor critical response, both movies managed to earn more than $156 million at the worldwide box office. Interestingly, the Are We Done Yet? franchise was previously adapted into a sitcom as well. It ran for three seasons between 2010 and 2013, and starred Terry Crews and Essence Atkins in lead roles.

As for the third film, Are They Gone Yet?, it has Ice Cube, Todd Garner, and Jeff Kwatinetz as the producers. Ben Hurwitz and Lauren Gennawey are serving as the executive producers.

Are They Gone Yet? has yet to receive an official release date window.

Fans wondering about The Way Home Season 5 have finally got the answers. Hallmark has now officially decided on the show’s future. Unfortunately, there won’t be a fifth season coming. The network confirmed Season 4 will be the last.

Has Hallmark canceled The Way Home Season 5 or renewed it for Season 5?

The Way Home Season 5 is not happening. Hallmark has decided to end the series instead. The upcoming fourth season will be the finale. It will premiere sometime during Spring 2026. Hallmark executive Samantha DiPippo also thanked the cast, crew, and fans for supporting the series.

Via PEOPLE, she said, “Fans of The Way Home have enthusiastically watched and rewatched every episode since the first pond jump of season 1 as they’ve tried to piece together the brilliant puzzle.”

According to Samantha DiPippo, fans won’t be left hanging in the final season. “Season 4 will feature the thrilling twists and turns fans expect, and, as the Landry family’s journey comes to a satisfying close, viewers will get the answers they’ve waited for.”

Filming for Season 4 is expected to wrap later this month. Even though the series is ending, fans still have plenty ahead. Season 4 will continue several unfinished storylines. Alice’s friends from the 1970s are expected back. The final season will also address major questions.

Season 3 ended with several huge cliffhangers remaining. Del traveled through the pond for the first time and witnessed her wedding to Colton. Kat and Elliot also strengthened their relationship further. Meanwhile, Jacob disappeared again, creating another mystery.

The finale introduced a mysterious couple from nowhere. They were seen entering the pond in the 1970s. With several exciting storylines still left to unfold, co-creator Alexandra Clarke previously teased more surprises ahead. “The best part about this show is that nothing is straightforward. Everything is an answer that begets a question.”

While many fans hoped for a Season 5 renewal, Hallmark has chosen to end the story with Season 4. For now, fans can stream The Way Home Seasons 1-3 on Hallmark+, while Seasons 1 and 2 are also available on Netflix.

Why Armie Hammer Cried Making New Uwe Boll Movie After Public Cancellation & Doxing

Armie Hammer got emotional while making his comeback in movies after five years. The Call Me by Your Name and Death on the Nile star will feature in Uwe Boll‘s upcoming project.

Why did Armie Hammer cry when making Uwe Boll’s new movie?

Back in 2021, Armie Hammer was canceled online and by Hollywood for sharing weird cannibalism texts and sexual assault allegations. For the past few years, he has expressed a desire to return to acting, which he considers his first love. He spoke candidly about those feelings during a recent interview.

Hammer will be seen in Citizen Vigilante, the upcoming new movie from Uwe Boll. Speaking with The Hollywood Reporter while promoting the film, the actor revealed that he literally cried when he got this offer, especially at a time when he desperately needed one.

“I’m pretty sure I cried,” said Hammer. “It was just this moment where I was like: I’m going to get to do the thing that I love more than anything — other than my children.” He added, “I would have done a f*****g cat food commercial. I just wanted to work again.”

Speaking of his comeback movie, its trailer and poster were revealed last month by Quiver Distribution. In addition to the Golden Globe nominee, the film also includes Costas Mandylor, Lennart Betzgen, Neb Chupin, and Dora Dimić Rakar, among others.

As for the story, it will see Hammer playing Sanders, a rich businessman from Zagreb, who’s got a massive, inherited real estate empire. Later, the character transforms into a fearless vigilante and goes after violent criminals, rapists, and corrupt judges who initially escaped punishment for their crimes.

Interestingly, the original title of this movie was The Dark Knight. However, it was later changed after Warner Bros. issued a cease and desist order over the name.

Citizen Vigilante will be released on digital platforms and streaming services on June 19, 2026.

Robin Hood Movies Ranked, Including Hugh Jackman’s The Death of Robin Hood

Robin Hood Movies Ranked, Including Hugh Jackman's The Death of Robin Hood

Ahead of the release of A24’s The Death of Robin Hood movie this Friday, June 19, we’ve ranked every Robin Hood movie. The list is based on each film’s current Tomatometer ratings on Rotten Tomatoes.

Robin Hood movies ranked by RT score

7) Robin Hood (2018) — 15%

At the bottom of the list is Lionsgate’s star-studded 2018 adaptation of Robin Hood, which received a 15% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Director Otto Bathurst’s live-action movie starred Taron Egerton, Jamie Foxx, Ben Mendelsohn, Jamie Dornan, and Eve Hewson. It was heavily criticized by critics and audiences, who weren’t impressed with how it reimagined the classic tale into a stylized modern medieval story. Many felt that its attempt to blend the industrial revolution aesthetic with its medieval setting wasn’t executed very well. Besides its visuals, most critics were also disappointed with the film’s CGI action sequences and dull script.

6) Robin Hood: Men in Tights (1993) — 42%

Taking the sixth spot is 1993’s Robin Hood: Men in Tights movie starring Cary Elwes. Described as a spoof adaptation of the classic tale, the film was brought to life by acclaimed filmmaker Mel Brooks. Following its debut, it divided critics and moviegoers. It currently holds a 42% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while its Popcornmeter score is significantly higher at 81%. Even though many critics weren’t too fond of its lowbrow humor and pop-culture references, the general audience loved its silliness, Elwes’ leading performance, and its memorable musical numbers. Because of this, it ultimately became a cult classic.

5) Robin Hood (2010) — 43%

Next up on the list is 2010’s Robin Hood movie starring Russell Crowe as the titular outlaw. It currently has a 43% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The live-action adaptation served as Crowe’s fifth collaboration with Gladiator director Ridley Scott. The film also featured an all-star cast that included Cate Blanchett, William Hurt, Oscar Isaac, Matthew Macfadyen, Léa Seydoux, and Mark Strong. Even though the critics praised its visuals, epic action sequences, and the main cast’s strong performances, the film was criticized for its emotionally flat political story.

4) Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991) — 53%

Ranking fourth is 1991’s Kevin Costner movie Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, which currently holds a 53% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It is one of the most divisive Robin Hood adaptations to date, as critics and moviegoers gave opposite opinions on the film. While critics were calling out the film’s inconsistent narrative and Costner’s performance, the general audience was highly entertained by its massive scale and action. The late Alan Rickman’s scene-stealing portrayal of the Sheriff of Nottingham has also received universal praise.

3) Robin Hood (1973) — 58%

Taking the third spot is Disney’s 1973 animated movie Robin Hood, which reimagined the characters into anthropomorphic animals. It currently has a 58% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while its Popcornmeter score is higher at 81%. Despite criticisms about its repetitive animation style, this adaptation is considered a cherished classic to fans who grew up watching it.

2) The Death of Robin Hood (2026) — 72%

Coming in second is the upcoming A24 movie The Death of Robin Hood. It features Hugh Jackman as an aged version of the titular outlaw. Ahead of its release, the film is now the second-highest-rated film adaptation of the beloved folk tale with a 73% RT score, based on 30 reviews. Early reviews are praising Jackman for his intense and gritty performance, with some even claiming that it’s reminiscent of his acclaimed work in Logan. Besides Jackman, critics are also acknowledging Jodie Comer and Bill Skarsgård’s performances.

1)The Adventures of Robin Hood (1938) — 100%

1938’s epic movie The Adventures of Robin Hood has stood the test of time by taking the number one spot on this list, with a perfect Tomatometer score on Rotten Tomatoes. It is a universally acclaimed swashbuckler classic starring Errol Flynn, Olivia de Havilland, and Basil Rathbone. The movie was praised for its incredible cast, fast-paced action, and masterful action sequences.
