Dune: The Sisterhood Finds New Director Recasts 2 Roles

According to Deadline, filmmaker Anna Foerster has been tapped as the new director for Max’s upcoming prequel series Dune: The Sisterhood. This follows Chernobyl’s Johan Renck’s exit last March. Foerster — who has directed episodes of Outlander and Westworld — expected to helm multiple episodes.

In addition, Max has also welcomed the addition of The Crown‘s Olivia Williams and The Witcher star Jodhi May to the ensemble cast of Dune: The Sisterhood. Williams will replace Shirley Henderson for the leading role of Tula Harkonnen, while May is taking over the role of Natalya, who was initially set to be played by Game of Thrones’ Indira Varma.

The outlet’s sources note that Varma left the high-profile project due to scheduling conflicts.

Who’s Involved in Dune: The Sisterhood?

Set 10,000 years before the ascension of Paul Atreides, Dune: The Sisterhood will follow the Harkonnen Sisters as they combat forces that threaten the future of humankind and establish the fabled sect known as the Bene Gesserit. The series will also star Emily Watson, Sarah-Sofie Boussnina, Shalom Brune-Franklin, Faoileann Cunningham, Aoife Hinds, Chloe Lea, Travis Fimmel, Mark Strong, Jade Anouka, Chris Mason, Josh Heuston and Edward Davis.

The project hails from Legendary Television. Diane Ademu-John previously served as co-showrunner with Alison Schapker before stepping down from the role last month. Executive producers are Ademu-John, Schapker, Denis Villeneuve, Jon Spaihts, Scott Z. Burns, Matthew King, John Cameron, and Cait Collins, along with Brian Herbert, Byron Merritt, and Kim Herbert on behalf of the Frank Herbert estate.

Set in the universe of Frank Herbert’s epic Dune novel, the series is told through the eyes of a mysterious order of women known as the Bene Gesserit. Armed with extraordinary abilities, this group of women weaves through the feudal politics of Dune, pursuing their own plans that ultimately lead them to the enigmatic planet Arrakis.

Hayao Miyazaki Worried Over Final Movies Lack of Marketing

Earlier this month, Studio Ghibli announced they had decided not to release any promotional content for Hayao Miyazaki‘s final directorial feature How Do You Live. This includes trailers, posters, or still images of any kind. Studio Ghibli president Toshio Suzuki is confident with this new release strategy, and believes it will pique the audiences’ interest more.

In a recent interview with at the Ghibli Exhibit in Tokyo (via World of Reel), Miyazaki addressed his upcoming animated movie’s lack of marketing, admitting that he’s definitely nervous about its results. “I wonder if it’ll be okay without publicity,” the acclaimed filmmaker said. “I am beginning to worry […] I’m concerned, that’s all.”

What to Expect in How Do You Live?

Producer Suzuki Toshio also confirmed that Miyazaki’s How Do You Live won’t be based on the 1937 Japanese coming-of-age story by Genzaburō Yoshino, despite sharing the same title. Suzuki confirmed the film will instead feature an original story. In a previous interview, Studio Ghibli executive Toshio Suzuki described the project as a “big fantastical film” being worked on by 60 animators.

Miyazaki is best known for animated classics like including Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, and Spirited Away. Fans are now able to celebrate his films through Studio Ghibli’s recently-opened theme park, which features attractions and rides inspired by Miyazaki’s work.

How Do You Live is scheduled to arrive in Japanese theaters on July 14. Currently, GKIDS has not yet announced the release date for its North American theatrical release.

Bam Margera Leaves Rehab Early Lamar Odom Worried

Bam Margera was reported to be in rehab following his being placed on a psychiatric hold. According to Lamar Odom, however, that is no longer the case.

According to a report from TMZ, Odom — who owns one of the facilities that Margera was at — said that Margera left his stint in rehab early, a move that concerns the former basketball player. A previous report from TMZ confirms that Margera left the facility last week, and planned on making a trip to Las Vegas.

The TMZ report goes on to mention that Odom believes if Margera wants to continue having communication with his son, Phoenix, he should come back and continue to get help. This comes after Margera’s estranged wife, Nikki Margera, had been allowing Bam to speak to his son while in rehab.

What happened to Bam Margera?

The news comes following disputes between Margera and his wife, Nikki. Margera made headlines earlier this month by taking to Instagram and demanding he is allowed to see his son, threatening to take enough drugs until he dies if he doesn’t get the opportunity.

This came to a head earlier this month when Margera’s brother Jess took to social media asking if anyone in the Los Angeles area knew of Margera’s location, suggesting that he may be missing. According to Margera’s attorney Peter Thompson, however, Margera traveled to Los Angeles in an effort to reunite with his son.

According to a report from TMZ, law enforcement officers were able to locate Margera after he had gone missing by tracking his phone. TMZ also reported that Margera’s behavior and speech was deemed erratic.

Combined with recent suicidal threats the actor has made, the decision was made to place him in an involuntary psychiatric hold, something often called a “5150,” which refers to Article 1, Section 5150 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code.

The Witcher Season 3 Part 1 Doesnt Fix Netflix Series Issues

Netflix‘s The Witcher has had its fair share of criticism over the years for its drastic divergence from Andrzej Sapkowski‘s beloved series of novels. While the criticisms have ranged from warranted to unfair as Season 2 diverged even further than the first, fans hoped that Season 3 might correct the series’ course a bit. This is especially true since this is Witcher superfan Henry Cavill‘s final season as Geralt of Rivia.

Only the first five episodes of Season 3 have debuted, but they haven’t managed to capture my interest. Cavill still excels as Geralt and I have no real issues with any of the performances. Freya Allen, Joey Batey, and Anya Chalotra are all excellent performers who are doing what they can with the material here — it’s just unfortunate that the material isn’t as strong as it could be.

While The Witcher Season 3 is a step in the right direction from Season 2, it’s not quite enough. Season 2 rewrote the character of Yennefer while making major changes to the core story — like the death of Eskel — which led to the entire series’ narrative feeling off. Changes to source material aren’t inherently bad. In fact, I’d go so far as saying that divergences, when interesting enough, can serve as a complementary take on the source material.

Though Season 3 seems to try to right the ship, it may be too late. While promising ideas emerge here and there, a lot of the season thus far has been more bland than anything. The episode of Geralt and Yennefer at Aretuza’s ball was the most intriguing and offered up some fun moments, but most of the episodes blurred together for me. The Witcher books and games captivated from beginning to end, but the world of the Netflix series just doesn’t grab in the same way.

Credit: Susie Allnutt

In regards to Cavill leaving after Season 3, I can’t imagine it will be a positive change for the series. The lead star seemed to be the one universally beloved part of the Netflix show, with both fans of the show and fans of the novels and games feeling that he was the perfect choice for the role. Though Liam Hemsworth has stated that he’s reading the books to prepare for the role, I’m not certain that will be enough, as the series has already gone on for three seasons with a fairly altered world from the books.

So while I’m glad The Witcher Season 3 seems to be taking steps towards addressing the issues series fans had involving story liberties, it could already be too late. I truly hope that the show finds some form of footing and appeases everybody who’s kept up with it, but I think that even if they continue to address fan complaints, it may be too little, too late.

Reservation Dogs Season 3 to End Taika Waititi FX Series

Creator Sterlin Harjo took to Instagram to announce that Reservation Dogs Season 3 will conclude the comedy-drama’s run on FX.

Harjo admitted that ending the series was a tough call, but the “correct decision creatively for the show.” This definitely comes as a surprise to fans, especially when the first two installments have received widespread critical acclaim — including a Peabody award and a Golden Globe nomination.

“I always knew what the end of this story would be, I just didn’t know when it would arrive,” Harjo wrote. “As we continued to break stories and write scripts this season, it became clear to the producers, Taika and me that the season three finale is the perfect series finale.”

He continued, “When we came up with the idea for Reservation Dogs, I didn’t think the show would ever get made, but thankfully it did. The first and most basic idea for us as Native people, was to show the world that Native humor and Natives are funny […] it has been a dream to collaborate and make a show that it is entirely written by, directed by and stars Native people. These are our stories, and they represent our people. We know it’s an enormous responsibility and we never took that lightly.”

Check out his full statement in his Instagram post below:

Disney Live-Action Remake Songs Ranked After The Little Mermaid

When a musical is adapted to film, one thing’s for certain: a new song will be added whether it needs one or not (it usually doesn’t).

The main reason for this is increased awards potential. In order to be eligible for “Best Original Song” honors, a movie needs a new track as they can’t submit one that previously existed. This doesn’t mean the songs are generally awards-worthy, though — far from it. Most end up feeling little more than obligatory when all is said and done.

The infamous Disney live-action remakes are a whole other beast, however. A lot of their original songs come across as phoned-in and lazy. This makes it odd that many of them have more than one, often unnecessarily replacing beloved songs from their animated counterparts.

Here’s a ranking of the original songs from the Disney live-action remakes, from the painful to the pleasant.

15. When He Was Here With Me (Pinocchio)

This only makes the list because the Pinocchio soundtrack claims it’s a song. It’s really just Tom Hanks as Geppetto speaking about his dead son while the orchestral score plays in the background.

It’s only before the two-and-a-half minute mark of this three-and-a-half minute song that Hanks even attempts to sing. While it isn’t good per se, the emotion makes up for it the same way some performances in movies like 2012’s Les Miserables do. But like that movie, this song is better in context than played on the soundtrack.

I’m not generally one to advocate for the removal of the more “talkative” numbers from a musical’s soundtrack album, but there’s a decent case to be made for this one to have missed the cut.

14. Pinocchio, Pinocchio (Pinocchio)

Okay, maybe Tom Hanks holding off on actually singing wasn’t such a bad idea after all. On top of the fact that this number replaces the delightful “Little Wooden Head” from the 1940 movie. The music is nice, but Hanks isn’t a great vocalist, and his breathing sounds pretty labored at times.

That’s not even mentioning the lyrics, which contain such inspired lyrics as “Pinocchio, Pinocchio / I’ll feed you beets and gnocchi-o / And rice that comes from Tokyo / And you’ll think it is good.” I don’t think I need to say anything else here.

13. Scuttlebutt (The Little Mermaid)

The live-action Little Mermaid starts off as a pretty basic, uninteresting remake until Ariel gets to shore. Once she’s on land, things diverge from the animated movie and the remake becomes its own thing — and a pretty enjoyable one at that.

This all changes, however, as soon as “Scuttlebutt” begins. The song is meant to cut the rising third act tension, but it really wasn’t the moment for a break in the increasing stakes. It somehow grinds the film to a halt even though it’s technically moving the story forward.

But really, this song would be bad no matter where in the film it landed. Awkwafina may have been a rapper at one point, but there’s a reason she’s had more success as an actor. But a lot of the blame has to go to Lin-Manuel Miranda, who couldn’t resist throwing his signature style into a movie that didn’t really suit it. It usually works pretty well, but The Little Mermaid really didn’t need a squawking Scuttle rap song feat. Sebastian.

12. How Does A Moment Last Forever (Montmare) (Beauty and the Beast)

This reprise comes at a moment in which Belle has traveled to the past with the Beast. Her backstory was not present in the original, and while it isn’t really necessary in this one, it does make for an alright foundation for her to bond with the Beast.

Emma Watson received a fair amount of criticism for her singing in Beauty and the Beast. With that in ind, it’s nice to have a song that seems to have been written specifically for her voice. She does a great job with the track, even if it isn’t really necessary.

11. How Does A Moment Last Forever (Beauty and the Beast)

Yes, even Kevin Kline as Maurice gets a little song in this remake. It’s a pleasant enough moment looking back on his life with Belle and his dead wife; nothing to write home about, but not painful to listen to, either. Ultimately, more of a purpose to the story than the reprise, but not by much.

10. Aria (Beauty and the Beast)

Does this one have any connection to the story? No. But it does give us a number from Braodway legend Audra McDonald, and for that, it’s much better than some of these other songs.

9. Wild Uncharted Waters (The Little Mermaid)

One thing the live-action Little Mermaid improves upon is Prince Eric. In the original, he’s a generic love interest, but the remake works to rectify that by giving him a backstory, interests, and yes, his own “I Want” song. While Ariel is still the clear star of the movie, all of this makes the romance between the two more compelling and easier to get invested in.

Unfortunately, this song is about as generic as it gets when it comes to the “I Want” genre. It’s not bad, but it isn’t catchy or memorable, either. Honestly, it could have been cut for time without the movie losing anything important.

8. I Will Always Dance (Pinocchio)

This song is sung by Fabiana – a puppeteer for villain Stromboli – and her puppet, Sabina, as Fabiana controls her. It starts off as a slow ballad about Fabiana’s love of dance despite her foot injury preventing her from doing so. Later, Fabiana picks up Sabina to deliver the rest of the number and the music turns upbeat. She sings of various styles she loves and demonstrates them through the puppet. Even gets Pinocchio to join in.

This song doesn’t add too much to the movie and ends abruptly, but it’s not really that bad overall.

7. What a Shame (Lady and the Tramp)

This number serves as a replacement for the 1955 version’s “Siamese Cat Song,” which was, well, racist, and obviously wouldn’t be in the remake. Just like that song, this one is about the cats destroying the house to the shock and horror of Lady.

The jazz style they went with for this one is fun. While it’s not a particularly memorable number, it’s pleasant enough to listen to in the moment.

6. Days In the Sun (Beauty and the Beast)

This is a sweet-but-sad song that sees the servants-turned-objects lament their fate and remember better times before the curse was put on the castle. It’s pretty and all, but the much catchier and livelier “Human Again” — a number cut from the animated movie only to return in the stage musical and tenth-anniversary IMAX release of the film — is the superior song centered on this sentiment.

5. Evermore (Beauty and the Beast)

Like “Days In the Sun,” this is a perfectly nice song about the toll of the curse on the castle. This time, it’s sung from the perspective of the Beast as he sings about his feelings for Belle. But also like “Days In the Sun,” the Beauty and the Beast stage musical contains a much better song which serves the same narrative purpose in “If I Can’t Love Her.”

4. The Coachman To Pleasure Island (Pinocchio)

Luke Evans was one of the highlights of the live-action Beauty and the Beast remake as Gaston. It only makes sense that Disney decided to bring him in to play another villain, this time the coachman in Pinocchio.

The character is expanded from the animated movie, even receiving a song of his own — by far, the best new song in the remake. It’s a jazzy little number in which the coachman and young boys pressure Pinocchio to go with them to Pleasure Island. The song is very reminiscent of some classic villain songs of Disney’s past like The Princess and the Frog’s “Friends on the Other Side.” Evans is very convincing in the role, and his portrayal makes for a character that’s different from the animated counterpart but still quite menacing.

3. For The First Time (The Little Mermaid)

It’s strange to grant a song sung by Ariel while her voice is being held captive by Ursula such a high spot on the list. However, “For The First Time” works as a window into Ariel’s mind, and it’s nice to get that considering she spends so much time without her voice.

While the number itself is kind of a run-of-the-mill “Disney Princess” song, Halle Bailey has a lovely voice and it’s nice to have the added dimension of Ariel’s inner thoughts, something not present in the animated movie.

2. Spirit (The Lion King)

I mean, this is a Beyoncé song, so it was likely to be pretty great from the get-go. “Spirit” is fitting as a sister song to the likes of “Circle of Life” and the lesser known “He Lives in You” (from The Lion King II: Simba’s Pride as well as the Lion King stage musical). It’s a nondiegetic song, but still deserves a spot on this list (and a high one at that). Unlike so many other musical pieces from the various Disney live-action remakes, it’s clear there was a considerable amount of heart and passion put into “Spirit.”

1. Speechless (Aladdin)

Jasmine is one of the few Disney Princesses to never get a solo number (at least not in the original Aladdin) but the nearly 30-year wait was worth. This wonderful power ballad showcases the character’s inner strength and determination to be heard that — while present in the animated film — is too often overlooked by audiences. This is truly one of the few songs from a live-action Disney remake that could hold its own amongst the numbers held over from its animated counterpart.

National Lampoons Vacation Interview: Dana Barron Reflects on Comedy 40 Years Later

ComingSoon Editor-in-Chief Tyler Treese spoke with National Lampoon’s Vacation star Dana Barron about the movie’s 40th anniversary and working with Chevy Chase (watch and read more interviews). The film is now available on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and digitally.

“Everything is planned, packed – and about to go hilariously wrong,” reads the movie’s synopsis. “The Griswolds are going on vacation. In the driver’s seat is Clark Griswold (Chevy Chase), an Everyman eager to share the open road and the wonders of family togetherness. Myriad mishaps, crude kin (Randy Quaid), encounters with a temptress (Christie Brinkley), financial woes, Aunt Edna (Imogene Coca) on the roof, one security guard (John Candy) and 2,460 miles later, it’s a wonder the Griswolds are together. There’s never been a family vacation like it. Except maybe yours. And that helps explain why National Lampoon’s Vacation remains so popular… and so very funny.”

Tyler Treese: What’s wild is National Lampoon’s Vacation still holds up to this day. I just watched it again and it’s still so beloved. Why do you think it’s resonated beyond generations?

Dana Barron: Because we all have families and families have stories, and families have things that go wrong. And Vacation is like the quintessential American family that has gone wrong, but yet survived and eventually had a great time. So when we go on our family vacations — and now that it’s summer, people will have their stories. I do Comic-Cons, and fans come up to me and tell me their horrible stories.

I’ve written a book, 40 Years on Vacation, that will be coming out soon. I’ve collected their stories and there are some stories in the book [that are] such great stories — their family tragedy about their vacation, like Vacation. So that’s why I think it resonates, because it was the 80s and there was a nostalgia that people have and they looked back going, “Oh, I remember my dad who was bugging me so much when I was on that trip and we couldn’t do anything, but I loved my dad, and yet I loved that vacation, even though at the time it stunk.”

Chevy Chase was in top form in this movie. What stood out about working with him and getting to see that top-notch comic timing on display?

Well, mind you, I was a teenager and Anthony Michael Hall — we call him Michael — was very up on who was who back then. Like, “Oh, Eddie Bracken, John Candy, Imogene Coca — all these great stars. And he schooled me all the time. Mind you, I don’t know if you remember, Anthony Michael Hall was also on Saturday Night Live eventually. I never asked, [but] something that I can ask him — we’re still very close — [is] did he do Saturday Night Live because of Chevy being on the shoot or not? I don’t know. So he was on the top of his game.

It was fun because we’d be driving through a town, and he would roll down the window, goes, “Hey, I’m Chevy and you’re not.” I guess that was his signature thing that he would do all the time. But being a young kid, I’m like, “Ooh, oh, is that okay?” It was fine. It was fun.

You mentioned Anthony Michael Hall, and in this movie, you just have such a great rapport together. You’re playing off each other back and forth. How was it establishing that relationship? You really feel like siblings throughout.

We did. That’s very, very good to note that, because at that time, our audition scene was a sibling rivalry fight. Rusty’s eating peanut butter cups stuck all over his teeth, whatever. We would fight back and forth. And during the film, when he was 14, and I was a little older, I was supposed to be the older sister, and he became the older brother because he grew by the end and he was much taller by the end.

We did have that rapport, and we’re still very close. He lives seven minutes from where I am. Literally, just last week we hung out. So we’re still very, very close. But there’s that. It was just a natural rapport with everybody in the cast. It was magical. It was so much fun.

So much of this was filmed in the car. What stood out about filming in such an enclosed area?

I don’t have issues with claustrophobia or anything. When you asked me that, there’s a certain smell … we did a vacation on vacation, so we traveled a lot and there’s different cars that we had depending on the shot, but it all had this kind of interesting desert dusty smell and it squeaked a little bit. I don’t if you can hear in the original one, you’ve got to listen for that squeak that it has naturally. So the Truckster was its own character in itself. It was kind of like our Millennium Falcon in Star Wars. It was kind of our star vehicle.

Tom Cruise on How Mission: Impossible Movies are Constantly Evolving

Actor Tom Cruise has commented on the success of his Mission: Impossible movies.

Cruise has played the character of IMF Agent Ethan Hunt since the first Mission: Impossible film in 1996. With the seventh installment around the corner in the wildly successful franchise, Cruise has spoken about the process of making Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One, and how the series has grown.

“It’s constantly evolving,” Cruise told Empire. “You have to be pretty unrelenting, and honest with yourself about stories and structure and what’s working and what’s not. I don’t want to stop until it’s right.”

This rings true about a franchise with its first five installments all having different directors behind the camera. This led to each movie having its own unique feel until Christopher McQuarrie directed the fifth movie, Mission: Impossible — Rogue Nation, and stayed to direct the series up till the upcoming eighth movie.

McQuarrie once spoke about how during the production of Dead Reckoning Part One, he found out Berlin would no longer let them film a foot chase at an under-construction airport. “We were going to shoot this airport sequence and a foot chase there,” he says. “And then Berlin said, ’No, we’re too close to the opening of the airport.’” Suddenly, the foot chase was off. The airport sequence was out. Another punch to roll with on a production packed with them.

“Then Abu Dhabi said, ’Well, we have an airport,’” recalls McQuarrie. “And we said, ’Great — instead of a foot chase, let’s do something in the desert.’” This led the Dead Reckoning cast and crew to Abu Dhabi, where they made what McQuarrie calls “the hardest, hardest sequence I have ever had to work out. Now, it’s a sequence of which we are immensely, immensely proud. But it’s like everything else on Mission — if I’d known going in, I would never have done it.”

When is Mission: Impossible 7 coming out?

The Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part One release date is July 12, 2023, by Paramount Pictures.

The cast includes many familiar faces such as Tom Cruise, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Rebecca Ferguson, Vanessa Kirby, and Henry Czerny reprises his role from the original Mission: Impossible. New cast members include Hayley Atwell, Esai Morales, Shea Whigham, Pom Klementieff, and Cary Elwes.

“Ethan Hunt and the IMF team must track down a terrifying new weapon that threatens all of humanity if it falls into the wrong hands,” reads the official synopsis. “With control of the future and the fate of the world at stake, a deadly race around the globe begins. Confronted by a mysterious, all-powerful enemy, Ethan is forced to consider that nothing can matter more than the mission — not even the lives of those he cares about most.”

In a statement to TMZ, Lohan said that “we are very excited for our new family member to arrive and we are looking forward to this next chapter of our lives!”

Logan Director Wishes Marvel Didnt Bring Wolverine Back in Deadpool 3

Logan director James Mangold has said part of him wishes Marvel was not bringing Wolverine back in Deadpool 3.

Mangold has directed two Wolverine movies, starting with The Wolverine and then moving on to Logan. The ending of Logan appeared to promise that it would be the last time we would be seeing Hugh Jackman as the iconic character. However, it was announced that Jackman would reprise the character in the upcoming Marvel movie Deadpool 3 alongside Ryan Reynolds.

Mangold, who is directing the upcoming movie Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, commented on Wolverine’s return. “I can’t say that there’s a part of me that doesn’t wish that we’d let it be,” he tells Variety. “But there was always going to be another Wolverine. There could be a baby Wolverine and a cartoon Wolverine. As much liquid as they can squeeze out of that rag, they’re going to try to. I don’t measure my success on a movie like ‘Logan’ with whether we ended the conversation. I ended my conversation.”

When is the Deadpool 3 release date?

Deadpool 3 releases on May 3, 2024, by Marvel Studios. It will be rated R and part of Phase Five of the Marvel Cinematic Universe

The film will star Ryan Reynolds, Hugh Jackman, Morena Baccarin, Leslie Uggams, Karan Soni, Brianna Hildebrand, Shioli Kutsuna, Stefan Kapičić, Rob Delaney, Emma Corrin, and Matthew Macfadyen.

Benicio del Toro Will Be in Every Shot of Wes Anderson Espionage Movie

Wes Anderson may have just released Asteroid City into theaters, but the iconic director is already preparing for his next film, which will be an espionage film featuring a familiar face.

What do we know about Wes Anderson’s next movie?

Speaking to French outlet LeMonde (via World of Reel), Anderson briefly teased his next film, which he says “will be about espionage” and a father-daughter relationship and will also have a dark tone. Most importantly, however, Anderson said that the film will star Benicio del Toro, who the director said will be “in every shot” of the movie.

“My next feature film will be linear, with Benicio del Toro in every shot,” said Anderson. “I can’t tell you much more than that except that it will be about espionage, a father-daughter relationship, and, let’s say, with a rather dark tone.”

Anderson and del Toro have a brief history of working together, with the actor having starred in Anderson’s last film, The French Dispatch, in one of the anthology’s stories. In the film, del Toro played Moses Rosentahler, an artist that’s imprisoned and strikes up a romance with guard Simone (played by Léa Seydoux).

While not too much is known about Anderson’s next movie, it was reported earlier this year that Michael Cera had already been cast in the film. Up next for Anderson will be The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar, a short film based on the eponymous short story in Roald Dahl’s 1977 collection The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar and Six More. That project is set to be released on Netflix sometime this year.

Pixar Needs Less Sequels & More Diverse Stories

In a recent interview with Variety, Pixar’s Chief Creative Officer Pete Docter blamed Elemental’s box office failure on Pixar’s previous streaming releases on Disney+, as well as claims that right now audiences seem “to want the comfort of what they know, which is sequels, and movies based on things.” When asked point blank about sequels to established Pixar franchises like Finding Nemo and The Incredibles, he replied “It’s all fair game.”

While it’s no secret that Pixar’s classic properties have made the company a boatload of money, and that their recent fare of Elemental, Lightyear, and Luca have been underwhelming, this can make it seem like Pixar is indeed running out of magic and that going back to their properties is the best solution. But is that the best way to make more magic? Sooner or later, the creative well is going to run dry if it’s only drawing up the same things.

To those who say that’ll never happen, yeah, I’m sure they said the same about Freddy and Jason back in the 80s. Unfortunately, years of subpar and sometimes downright awful sequels devalued both of those brands, and when they tried to make a comeback in earnest — A Nightmare on Elm Street in 2010 and Friday the 13th in 2009 — they were both dead on arrival. While there were other factors at play here, the fact that neither franchise has been resurrected since is pretty damning evidence. The characters are iconic and will live on forever in pop culture, but sooner or later, audiences tire of seeing the same rehashed drivel slapped up on the screen, no matter the franchise or studio it’s from.

With the lukewarm reception to Toy Story 4 compared to previous entries, as well as the online backlash to the announcement of a forthcoming Toy Story 5, at least one of Pixar’s franchises seems to already be heading that way. Add in the atrocious reception for Cars 3 and you’re already looking down the slippery slope of decline. However, with many film and TV companies — Disney in particular — on the current trend of remaking movies and continually adding to their already established franchises, this still seems like the most viable way to keep making money.

But the way to reignite the Pixar spark and make more magic is going to lie on a much more difficult path — then again, what else would you expect in a kid’s story? The hero never gets to take the easy way out. Taking the “safe bet” isn’t going to be the thing to save the day. The only way that Pixar will be able to save itself as a company is to branch out.

What made Pixar such a valuable company and what made its movies so popular initially was that they were different than other fare being produced at the time. Disney Animation had cornered the market on princesses, heroes, and adventure stories of the fantastical, Don Bluth covered dark and creepy kids’ animation, and experimental animation from other companies like Fox covered the rest of it. Pixar instead decided to focus on the adventures of more mundane things — toys, bugs, fish — and inject them with their own stories and characters, weaving more mature themes into them. The fact that they were also the first company to make a full-length CGI animated movie also helped to give them a boost for a few years until Dreamworks caught up.

There are several legitimate complaints about Pixar’s early years, including a lack of women and minorities both on screen and behind it and a deadlocked fear of ever pushing the status quo and making something that could even possibly offend someone, but in an almost ironic way, these could provide the exact solution to Pixar’s current dilemma.

The best Pixar movies from the last decade — Soul, Coco, Inside Out, Turning Red — have all had women and/or people of color as protagonists. Exploring different cultures like Coco did gives a chance to break into a whole different realm of ideas, and working with more diverse people behind the scenes exposes whole new stories and ways of thinking that might not be the same as that of a white guy who could afford to go to CalArts for a degree. By broadening the scope of what’s offered, Pixar has a chance to do three amazing things at once. First, they can break cultural barriers by showing off different people and different points of view, showing a kid audience that people can be different without it being a bad thing. Second, they can also use this opportunity to further diversify the animation industry as a whole by hiring the people needed to bring these stories to life. Third, by offering something different than what else is on the market now, they can regenerate interest in their brand and pull themselves out of their slump.

Pixar is fully capable of changing their stories while keeping the essence of them the same. Heartfelt, down to earth stories that both kids and grown-ups can enjoy, their movies can still be the definition of wholesome, family fun. But unless they’re willing to follow their own heritage and take a few risks and ruffle a few feathers, they’ll be stuck in a trap of their own making. As Dean Hardscrabble says in Monsters University, the key is to “Keep surprising people.”

Box Office Results: Spider-Man Elemental & Jennifer Lawrence Duke It Out

Audiences had plenty of options this weekend and ended up splitting the domestic box office between four films, namely Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($19.4M), Elemental ($18.3M), the Jennifer Lawrence comedy No Hard Feelings ($15.1M), and The Flash ($15M).

Box Office Results

Spider-Man continues to soar above all other summer releases and has snagged an impressive $317M domestically and $560M worldwide, per Deadline and Box Office Mojo. Meanwhile, Disney/Pixar’s Elemental dipped just 38% in its sophomore frame and has accrued $65.3M stateside and $121M worldwide. That’s still pretty rough, but there’s enough open water for this one to sail to respectable numbers before Barbie and/or Ninja Turtles takes over.

Regarding disasters, WB’s The Flash fell off a cliff in Week 2, dropping a massive 73% to raise its total to a shockingly bad $87.4M. That’s considerably less than the box office dud, Black Adam ($110.9M), at the same time during its run. Yikes. Worldwide, the pic has earned just $210.9M.

Lawrence’s surprisingly tame raunchy comedy, No Hard Feelings, is the clear winner here. No, the $15.1M opening doesn’t blow the lid off the box office, but with a $45M budget, this one doesn’t have to achieve absurd numbers to find success. Barbie will cut off its legs in a few weeks, but for now, this is the only comedy for older audiences to enjoy. A respectable 88% audience approval rating suggests this one could have lasting appeal. We’ll see.

Finally, Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City did solid business with $9.9M, besting the wide(r) release of Grand Budapest Hotel ($8.5M) and may be able to overtake The French Dispatch’s $16.1M domestic total.

This week sees the release of Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, which box office experts predict to make somewhere near $68-$102M.

Interview: Asteroid City Stars Adrien Brody & Jeffrey Wright Talk Wes Anderson Movie

ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim recently had the opportunity to sit down with Oscar-winning actor Adrien Brody (The Pianist, Predator) and Golden Globe winner Jeffrey Wright (The Batman, No Time to Die) about their new movie Asteroid City, directed by Wes Anderson.

“In 1955, students and parents from across the country gather for scholarly competition, rest, recreation, comedy, drama, and romance at a Junior Stargazer convention held in a fictional American desert town,” reads the film’s synopsis.

Jonathan Sim: You guys are working with Wes Anderson again on this film. So I wanted to ask, what is it about Wes Anderson’s directorial style that separates him from other directors that you’ve worked with, and made you want to come back for Asteroid City?

Adrien Brody: Well, Wes is, as you can see from his work and from every frame of his films, he’s quite a unique filmmaker. He’s a real auteur and even though these films are vastly different, you really see the craftsmanship of him as an artist and his writing style and his use of language visually, and it’s really profoundly beautiful work, and very intricate, and that’s always a pleasure.

The writing is always fun and intricate and exciting, and he creates this wonderful sense of family, and that’s also very unique in the sense that everyone stays together. We work together. We come home and stay in the same hotel and dine at the same restaurant every night. And it’s just unusual in that sense. But if Wes calls, I think any of us just show up.

This is a very cosmic sort of film that kind of deals with aliens and stuff like that. So here’s a bit of a fun question. If an alien ever arrived on Earth and you could both show it at least one of your movies or shows, which one would be the one that you’re most proud of that you would show the alien to kind of paint yourself in that kind of light?

Jeffrey Wright: Most proud of? I’ve got a couple of that I kind of like, thankfully. I did a movie [Ride with the Devil] with Ang Lee many years ago, a Civil War film. That was one of the best experiences I had working on a film. And we were out in Kansas and Missouri riding horseback all day for six months. And it’s a film about the Civil War—did I say that?—told from an interesting perspective. So if I think an alien dropped down and wanted to get some understanding of the history of America and who we are, where we are, maybe that one. It’s also just a beautiful film, I think, and one that was kind of undermined by the studio at the time, so underappreciated. So for that reason, it has an even more special place in my cinematic heart.

Adrien Brody: I’d show him Predators, of course.

Oh, I love Predators.

Adrien Brody: Just to show ’em what it’s like here. You might want to get out of here soon.

Hey, that’s one of my favorite performances of yours.

Adrien Brody: Oh, thank you very much, it was fun.

Who Is Emilia Clarkes Giah in Secret Invasion?

Emilia Clarke’s G’iah is a major character in the Marvel Disney+ series Secret Invasion. Though we’ve technically seen her in the Marvel Cinematic Universe before, let’s explore who this character is and why she’s taking part in the titular event.

Who is G’iah?

G’iah is a young Skrull who is Talos and Soren’s daughter. She appeared as a young child in 2019’s Captain Marvel, played by Auden L. Ophuls and Harriet L. Ophuls. She was present while Captain Marvel and her allies battled Yon-Rogg and his forces in Mar-Vell’s lab, then befriended a young Monica Rambeau, who would go on to become Photon in WandaVision and The Marvels.

In Secret Invasion, G’iah is now an adult. She’s considered a radical Skrull agent. While speaking with Vanity Fair, Clarke said that the character gives off “kind of punk feeling” and that she’s frustrated that “not a lot has happened” since Fury promised to help the Skrulls years ago.

ComingSoon spoiler alert

In the first episode, G’iah was introduced as being part of antagonist Gravik’s Skrull group. Though she was dedicated to his cause, learning of her mother Soren’s death from Talos seems to have shaken her beliefs.

Who is Emilia Clarke?

Emilia Clarke is an English actress. In addition to her MCU part, some of Clarke’s most famous roles include that of Daenerys Targaryen on Game of Thrones, Qi’ra in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and Sarah Connor in Terminator Genisys. She recently played Nina Mikhailovna Zarechnaya in Harold Pinter Theatre’s production of The Seagull.

Taylor Sheridan on Kevin Costners Yellowstone Departure: Im Disappointed

In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Yellowstone creator Taylor Sheridan finally addressed Kevin Costner‘s exit from the hit family drama.

Sheridan admitted that he was definitely “disappointed” that Costner’s lead character John Dutton won’t have a proper closure to his story arc. However, he doesn’t blame the Oscar-winning actor for wanting to focus on his own passion project — a Western epic titled Horizon.

“My last conversation with Kevin was that he had this passion project he wanted to direct,” Sheridan shared. “He and the network were arguing about when he could be done with Yellowstone. I said, ‘We can certainly work a schedule toward [his preferred exit date],’ which we did.”

He added, “My opinion of Kevin as an actor hasn’t altered. His creation of John Dutton is symbolic and powerful … and I’ve never had an issue with Kevin that he and I couldn’t work out on the phone. But once lawyers get involved, then people don’t get to talk to each other and start saying things that aren’t true and attempt to shift blame based on how the press or public seem to be reacting. He took a lot of this on the chin and I don’t know that anyone deserves it. His movie seems to be a great priority to him and he wants to shift focus. I sure hope [the movie is] worth it — and that it’s a good one.”

Yellowstone Ending with Season 5

Following Costner’s shocking exit, Paramount Network announced Yellowstone will end its run after Season 5. The show is currently on mid-season break, and slated to release its remaining six episodes in November 2023. Despite this, it has been confirmed a Yellowstone sequel is in development.

“The series chronicles the Dutton family, led by John Dutton, who controls the largest contiguous cattle ranch in the United States,” reads the synopsis. “Amid shifting alliances, unsolved murders, open wounds, and hard-earned respect — the ranch is in constant conflict with those it borders – an expanding town, an Indian reservation, and America’s first national park.”

Yellowstone is created by Taylor Sheridan and John Linson. It stars Kevin Costner, Luke Grimes, Kelly Reilly, Wes Bentley, Cole Hauser, Kelsey Asbille, Brecken Merrill, Jefferson White, Forrie Smith, Denim Richards, Ian Bohen, Finn Little, Ryan Bingham, Gil Birmingham, Jen Landon, and Kathryn Kelly.
