Dune Tops Halloween Box Office, My Hero Academia Impresses in First Week

Deadline reports that Denis Villeneuve’s Dune took in $15.5 million in its second weekend at the domestic box office, down a whopping 62%, which was more or less expected given the film’s availability on HBO Max and the Halloween holiday negatively impacting the box office. The sci-fi epic, based on Frank Herbert’s classic novel, has earned $69.4 million domestically thus far and is nearing the $300 million mark worldwide, which was successful enough for Warners and Legendary to green lite a sequel.

Dune is 16% ahead of Legendary’s Godzilla vs. Kong, which eventually crossed $100 million after 13 weekends, with $17 million of its domestic gross stemming from Imax. Globally, Dune has earned $43.7 million from the big-screen format.

Newer pics Last Night in Soho and Antlers didn’t produce much excitement, earning $4.16 million apiece from 3,016 and 2,800 theaters, though neither was expected to bring in much business. Though, for Soho, it is disappointing to see a film with so much buzz, featuring the talents of Edgar Wright and Anna Taylor-Joy, perform so poorly. Especially after Wright’s Baby Driver became something of a sleeper hit when it grossed $107.8 million domestically in 2017.

Meanwhile, Funimation’s My Hero Academia: World Heroes’ Mission brought in a 3-day domestic haul of $6.4 million from just 1,600 locations.

Otherwise, Halloween Kills held firm at No. 2 with another $8.5 million to bring its total to an impressive $85.6 million after three weeks, while No Time to Die drew $7.8 million for a $133.3 million domestic total.
