Andy Muschietti Explains Surprise Cameo in The Flash

The Flash is set to be a multidimensional story, meaning various characters from different timelines in the DC Universe will appear in the film. One of those characters will be Nicolas Cage’s Superman, as director Andy Muschietti confirmed the actor’s surprise cameo in The Flash.

“Nic was absolutely wonderful. Although the role was a cameo, he dove into it,” Muschietti said to Esquire Middle East. “I dreamt all my life to work with him. I hope I can work with him again soon.” Muchietti also noted that Cage is a “comic book fanatic” and a “massive Superman fan.”

25 years ago, Cage was cast as Superman in Tim Burton’s Superman Lives. However, Warner Bros. canceled the project due to production issues and script problems.

What to Expect in The Flash?

“Worlds collide in The Flash when Barry uses his superpowers to travel back in time in order to change the events of the past,” the official synopsis reads. “But when his attempt to save his family inadvertently alters the future, Barry becomes trapped in a reality in which General Zod has returned, threatening annihilation, and there are no Super Heroes to turn to. That is, unless Barry can coax a very different Batman out of retirement and rescue an imprisoned Kryptonian… albeit not the one he’s looking for. Ultimately, to save the world that he is in and return to the future that he knows, Barry’s only hope is to race for his life. But will making the ultimate sacrifice be enough to reset the universe?”

Ezra Miller reprises his role as Barry Allen / The Flash, who last appeared in the DCEU for Zack Snyder’s Justice League. Starring alongside Miller will be Sasha Calle as Kara Zor-El/Supergirl, Ron Livingston as Henry Allen, Maribel VerdĂș as Nora Allen, Michael Shannon as General Zod, Antje Traue as Faora-Ul, and Kiersey Clemons as Iris West. Michael Keaton and Ben Affleck will reprise their versions of Bruce Wayne/Batman, respectively.

The Flash is directed by Muschietti from a screenplay by Christina Hodson. Muschietti’s sister, Barbara, will produce alongside Michael Disco. The Flash belongs to the DCEU but will serve as a continuity reset to shape the new DC Universe.

The Flash speeds into theaters on June 16.
