Rebel Moon Writer Explains Jimmy's New Look at the End of the Movie

Anthony Hopkins’ character in Rebel Moon, Jimmy, goes through a bit of a change by the end of the new Netflix sci-fi film, a decision that is explained a bit more in detail in the extended cut of the film. Speaking to Variety, Rebel Moon writer Kurt Johnstad was asked about the change in look for Jimmy.

In the film, Jimmy is the last member of a race of mechanical knights who is seen wearing a crown of antlers and a bunch of foliage by the end of the film. According to Johnstad, the character is given more time in the extended cuts and in 2024’s sequel film, but the team behind the movie wanted to show him becoming “a little more human,” and more importantly, “a little feral” in his journey.

“Jimmy has a much bigger story in those extended cuts and certainly in the second movie,” said Johnstad. “It’s a little bit like Jimmy goes from this sentient robot to really becoming a little more human, and he goes a little feral. When everybody is being collected and the team is getting built, he’s running around in the woods being like a feral creature and hunting and sitting by the brook and catching fish and doing Jimmy things out in the woods, so that’s where the crown of antlers comes from.”

What is Rebel Moon about?

“A peaceful colony on the edge of the galaxy is threatened by the armies of a tyrannical regent named Balisarius,” reads the film’s synopsis. “The desperate civilians dispatch Kora, a young woman who has a mysterious past, to seek out warriors from nearby planets to help them challenge the regent.”

Described as a fantasy epic, Rebel Moon is directed by Zack Snyder from a screenplay he is co-writing with Shay Hatten and Kurt Johnstad, based on a story by Snyder and Johnstad. It stars Sofia Boutella as Kora, Ed Skrein as Admiral Atticus Noble, Charlie Hunnam as Kai, Michiel Huisman as Gunnar, Djimon Hounsou as General, Staz Nair as Tarak, Doona Bae as Nemesis, Ray Fisher as Darrian Bloodaxe, and newcomer E. Duffy as Milius.
